Huh?  V0?  What’s the meaning of this, you say?
It’s our new state-of-the-art method of avoiding v2’s It turns out that the transport stream from our usual source (very generous people indeed) was corrupted: there are three segments, lasting 2-5 seconds each, that are missing.  We decided to go ahead and release anyway, despite being hours after schedule.  We will release a v1 once we get our hands on a non-corrupted transport stream.  For the full BGata10 experience, I strongly suggest you wait for the v1 version.
That being said, if any of you out there can offer us the transport stream, you will have our undying gratitude.  Otherwise, we’ll wait until it pops up on PD or something.
The episode, otherwise, was awesome.  I remember loving these same parts in the manga.  Kyouka is quite delicious, I must say.
EDIT:: V1 released.  Enjoy!

Thanks for releasing this! I’ll download it to feed my addiction but I’ll still be waiting for the fixed version to archive.

  2. thx for subs anyway
going to use leopard or zero raws with them 😉

    thank you for the warning

  4. damn didn’t work
at 8.08 subs went way out of sync :X

  5. Hex,
Of course because that’s where the first segment is missing.

  6. No. Not happening. Sorry. Get me a clean transport stream, and you’ll get a clean release. We’re not going to use any raw off of PD/share.

I dun really understand what is the difference between Transport Stream and RAW bbut u guys beat COALGUYS to the release. Hooray!!!

  8. Transport stream is the captured stream from when something airs on Digital TV, raw is the encode of that captured stream.

I love it when you guys beat CoalGuys to the punch because you translations end up on all the anime streaming sites which makes it easier to watch(damn my crap internet)and give UTW great PR with the anime community

  11. Um, yah same cap we encoded.
It’s the one with the missing 14 seconds. If there was one available that didn’t have the missing segments we’d have encoded that. But since Coalguys weren’t releasing, (and even if they were they’d also have the exact same problem too), we thought that YOU GUYS, the downloaders would be happy to have something subbed available, which clearly isn’t the case here.
So next time, we’ll go with the wait until a good TS is available route because half the people downloading have no manners or appreciation.

  12. ar, can you please explain the reasoning behind insisting on TS? Are encoded raws somehow inherently bad compared to your encodes? It’s not like UTW does any hardsubbing (or did I miss something?), so what’s the big deal here? (Note: haven’t seen the RAWs, and if those are also missing the segments that would make sense.)

  13. Well, sure I don’t mind explaining at all.
    1) We hardsub the xvid, which we also encode from the TS.
    2) Yes the PD/Share raws are horrible to work with, our timers/typesetters/hell even translators don’t like working with them. Timers won’t touch them period, I don’t know what the Japanese encoders do because honestly they are that shocking, out of sync, etc that I can’t even figure out what they are doing wrong, and I’ve seen some horrible encodes in my days.
    3) The quality of the encodes is a great deal different, we take pride in our work, and part of that means doing the work ourselves.
It’s like telling Eclipse don’t worry use an encode they didn’t do. I know they hardsub, but even if they didn’t they’d prefer to wait a week for a clean TS to show up for a show rather than put out a crappy half assed raw from an encoder who has no idea on how to encode.
There’s probably some other reasons too, but these are the most important ones.
As an encoder myself (I did B Gata this week, and honestly we didn’t even notice the missing scenes till after the final raw was uploaded, and the timer had finished timing. All i knew was there was definitely some bad frames at that point, since I didn’t have time to watch it through till later on when we got closer to releasing), I take a lot of my pride in the encodes I do, and honestly some of the garbage raws that get uploaded I wouldn’t touch with a 100m pole, they are truly shocking, uncropped, re-encoded audio, over trimmed (ie. missing frames start, end, between breaks), out-of-sync audio that progressively gets worse across the span of the episode, and even encoding settings that are so wrong that I don’t know how some of these guys are even allowed to use encoders.
Honestly if there was a good clean raw available that wasn’t rubbish we would have used it, but as it stood my encode WITH missing scenes was still leaps better than any alternative. And we did a check, there is only 3 lines missing all up.

Thanks for the subs UTW > Coalguys anyways. Coalguys are a bunch of HS faggot trolls. I am thankful though for your hard wark and for having an alternative to coalguys. Downloaded v0 and will wait paitently for v1. I dont see a TS for ep 10 on PD either.

  15. ranmachua on June 4, 2010 at 3:03 pm said:

Of course we’ll wait for v1. That will be much better.

  16. Cool Beans on June 4, 2010 at 6:37 pm said:

I’m not sure what’s the point of waiting forever for a .ts when the end result looks identical unless you compare two screenshots for like 3 minutes. How is a release with missing video segments not “crappy half assed”?

  17. dummyacct7 on June 4, 2010 at 7:32 pm said:

Don’t get discouraged by people who complain. Most people who appreciate the release won’t say anything, and I assure you that there are a lot more of those than there are commenters here.

  18. BLACK_JUDGEMENT on June 4, 2010 at 7:55 pm said:

What’s the rush? We could have waited.

  19. “It’s _out_ new state-of-the-art method of avoiding v2’s” lol.
You’re not the first group to release a v0, usually when a group gets a bad .ts, they’ll mux their script to a pd raw for the v0.

  20. Saladin on June 4, 2010 at 9:19 pm said:

hey the missing secs arent a real problem since its a point in the episode where you can guess what theyll say.

This may be off-topic. Since the 2 series that you are subbing are ending soon, any plans to work on Senkou no Night Raid? Perhaps when the Blu-rays come out? Would love to have a quality sub team working on Senkou.

I have decided to wait for the proper v1.
(Just wondering) any ideas on when that might be?

    Is Angel Beats ep10 affected?

  25. Nope Angel Beats is fine. We’re working on it at the moment.

@ar: How much GB is a clean TS? the share transport streams are usually 2.5 to 4.0 GB. How can I know that a stream is “clean”?

  27. If you find one on share or PD let me know, and I’ll grab it. TokyoMX is generally 2.2-2.5gb iirc. I checked PD yesterday but not many get upped there by the looks of it. Been busy today so haven’t even thought about checking yet!

  28. You can’t know if it’s “clean”, but just let me know if one turns up, and I’ll download it anyway. Chances are it’ll probably be clean.

  29. doki doki on June 5, 2010 at 5:32 am said:

But Mazui thanked UTW for providing them a god raw file to work with.

  30. doki, their usual encoder was AWOL that was all, so we sent our raw their way since they needed one to work with/release with. They’re friends so it’s nothing really. If we needed one (ie. encoder is missing), they’d do the same too. ^.^

  31. ar – big thanks for all the shows you sub. just a thought though. wouldnt it have been better to have a V0 as a lower quality, but complete, release from a raw ? i know i would rather download that just to quick view and then get the good copy later. one where bits are missing is not worth getting at all.
please do not take any of what i have said personally, its just a thought on the matter. and again thanks for all you do.

  32. Yep I’d like to have done that, but there’s too many problems with the ones available that’s all. They play fine (most of the time) but when you’ve got to start doing things like timing/typesetting them, they become a huge amount of painful work that has to be redone all over again once you encode another raw. As someone who also times/typesets imo there’s nothing worse than doing a job multiple times. At least when a group encodes something, you know how its done. Moving times/signs over from the current encode to a fixed encode is a lot less work, than doing it from one of the other available complete raws. Mostly because we have more control over how it’s encoded, and how its cut, etc.
That’s all really. I guess some people don’t really look at it from an encoders perspective, it’s my job in a way to minimize the amount of work the other guys need to do. If I can’t do my job, it becomes more strain on others working with something outside of our control.
If it was just a simple exercise we wouldn’t mind honestly, but it becomes a real pain to tell you the truth. That’s why we prefer not to work with PD/share raws. If nobody even wants to work with because it’s so difficult to work with, then what other choice is there. Until Japanese encoders learn to do things properly, I don’t think you’ll ever see us use a Share/PD raw.

Hey, I don’t normally comment here but I thought I would this week.
Me and my gf used to go to Doki Fansubs for B Gata but they haven’t had it up in a while (One of their team members had irl stuff to deal with which is obviously more important, exams I think it was) so I hunted around and found a link to here from my anime list.
I used to be in charge of a fan sub group a couple of years back, I was the encoder, timer and typesetter (with my gf being an editor, a translator from a japanese forum, I forget the name and someone doing QA along with contacting an old friend who did the karaoke for us) so I do understand a little about what goes into stuff like this along with understanding what you probably deal with when it comes to encoding. (the group died a while back, not a good subject so that is all I’ll say).
Anyway, B Gata is a great show and I’m enjoying it, the problems with this encode didn’t even bother me at all and I can’t wait til next one, keep up the good work UTW and I’ll certainly keep an eye on here for any other shows you guys do that I may be interested in
    – Stu

  34. ar – thanks for the explanation on your choice.

  39. LOL, no. Audio is re-encoded to mp3. It’s stupid shit like this, that is why I won’t touch PD raws.
Anyway v1 raw has been encoded and I’m upping it now. We’ll probably release it sometime in the next 12 or so hours if somebody fixes up timing by then.

  44. the xvid won’t be too long.

  45. @ar It’s a v0, nothing has to be perfect except it has to be watchable. Releasing a video with broken segments isn’t very watchable.

  46. Personally I find out of sync audio to be much much worse, the missing segments didn’t really add much or drop much from the episode so they didn’t bother me all that much. This is just my own personal opinion of course. I’m not speaking on behalf of the group.
