La fin~ and so that wraps up the 6 month run of the Gosick anime. I’d be lying if i said I didn’t enjoy working on this series, because I quite enjoyed working on it. It was neither about Japanese school kids, nor about Japan itself in general. The setting and the location were both breathes of fresh air to me, and there’s something about the whole “ye olde days” that sparks interest and keeps the flame burning strong. Now it’s pretty clear that they skipped a LOT and I do mean a LOT of details throughout the course of the series, and while that may be so, I felt they did a wonderful job of developing the characters and condensing ~4-5000pgs of material (13 novels @ ~3-400pg each) into the space of 24 ~21min episodes. I’m actually surprised they pulled it off as good as they did, and while it might have not been a perfect execution, I still felt it was exceptional and worthy of praise.
That’s enough finale blogging for me. I hope you guys enjoy the end of the final arc of the series (for those who haven’t already watched in anxiousness!)
The Victorique project consisted of myself, Raze and fnord basically, and the name will be put to rest with the last release of the Gosick Blu-rays (so it’ll be a while still lol~). And so with that, it’s time to roll the credits and close the curtains.
ar (Encoder/Timer/Titlesetter/OP Kara): I’ve already blogged all that I wanted to blog about, so tl;dr it was fun and I had plenty of time to slowpoke and re-encode stuff until I was happy with it. Also I probably spent more time editing/matching fonts/making templates/doing the logo than actual combined time typesetting the majority of the episodes (lol~).
Raze (TLC/Editor/QC): I got pulled into this side project when we figured that I might as well QC the CR scripts for this show since I was going to follow the series anyway. I guess this was a decent show. It did sometimes feel like Victorique was pulling solutions to the mysteries out of nowhere though, especially with the earlier arcs. Gosick was a huge chore to work on some weeks and a breeze on others, because the quality of the CR scripts varied greatly across episodes (random translation/grammar/diction errors here and there, and general awkward, unnatural phrasing). Still, it’s quite something to realize a project you’ve been working on for half a year has just ended. Hopefully you enjoyed our offering of Gosick!
fnord (OP & ED Translator/ED Kara): I was somewhat disappointed with Gosick’s mysteries when the show started, but it improved a great deal from there. All in all, it was a nice enough show, and I adore the first ED. I hope you liked Gosick as well.

    Yeah… I caved and watched another realease. I’ll be keeping this one though…. untill the BDs anyway. Thank you.

  2. Well you can enjoy our full Unity translation with this release~

  3. Indeed, the first ED was great. Not so much the second but oh well. This was a great show and I thank you, UTW, for TLing this show.

  4. derpes on July 4, 2011 at 7:30 pm said:

    i waited for you guys to watch this episode, thanks ;d

  5. We didn’t TL it, we stole CR’s subs but we did put a lot of work into them, translation checking/editing them because they were really inconsistent (3 or so different translators) and they had some silly tl errors and lots of wording/sentence structure issues. Oh right, we did translate episode 10 and people complained it wasn’t CR, lol go figure.

    BTW Have you guys ever considered subbing an old series? Or, to be more exact, an old series other group seems to have dropped? ЁЯШЙ

  14. thanks for the release! this series is going into the vault along with some other animu xD I think I missed something though;
why did her hair turn silver?
15. @Huh
Her hair turned silver because she dyed it silver to avoid being caught, because they were looking for a small girl with long blonde hair. It’s probably mentioned in the novels, but it’s only implied in the anime.
16. So guys, here’s the link of the review I wrote for Gosick.

    BRING BACK VICTORICA!

  18. @Anonymous
    Here’s Kazuki Sakuraba’s (the author) website, go complain about Victorica there. It was obviously her choice that it is spelt “Victorique” since she had a huge hand in the anime production.

    oh well i think either way is fine

    is it me or is victorique smaller @ the end of the episode when she’s wearing the cap?
20. Hey ar, is there going to be a batch? :3

  21. @Weskalia
    That’s a lovely review~ I felt the same about most of the things mentioned too.
    @Mirari
    Yes, in a few days at most. Just need to double check if there’s any more changes to make for the second half of the series before I make the torrent/patches up for the second-half batch.

  22. @ar
    ah. so there’s no magic voodoo thing or anything going on with that. thanks for clearing that up
    ah….veeery good series. I might rewatch all the eps later xD

  23. Thanks ar for clearing that up.

  25. Cider on July 4, 2011 at 10:16 pm said:

    I felt the same way about Victorique’s animation towards the end, derpes, mostly in the views from above.
I’m guessing the silver/gray hair has some significance with respect to the term “gray wolf”, though I’m too sleep deprived to try to think of whether there’s anything deeper to it or not, though.
Wuv wuv wuv you guys so much. You may have been a few days late every week, but hell you were consistent. And when you were early on the odd occasion it was always a treat. I had some skepticism about this show at the outset but it’s really picked up and the last eight episodes or so have just been incredible. Definitely the best thing to have been watching last season.
Oh, and did I mention that the conclusion was wonderful? Not a lot of action, mystery or exposition in this episode but it crammed in everything and ended beautifully without going cheesy like AnoHana did. I’m buying me some light novels.
Oh, and I wouldn’t be unhappy if there were future ‘unofficial’ releases from Victorique on UTW. Kamisama Dolls hint hint. Just sayin’.

  29. @ Huh / ar
I thought her hair turned gray because of the stress of being separated from Kujo. I doubt it was dyed because it’d be pretty ridiculous (no reason to etc.) that she’d continue to dye her hair when she’s in Japan waiting for Kujo.
Also, dat Avril.

  30. greatinferno on July 4, 2011 at 11:11 pm said:

    @derpes
The end of the anime takes place 4 years after Kujo and Victorica get separated so it’s not that Victorica is shorter, it’s that Kujo is alot taller. In the anime he was 15 in 1924 and they got separated in 1925 so when Kujo comes back from the war in 1929, he is almost 20 by the end of the series.
@Everyone that’s finished the series-
I’ve run across a surprising amount of people that didn’t notice that the dress that Victorica was wearing at the end was a wedding dress. I figured the bouquet in her hand would’ve given it away. For some reason, most peoples
    lack of observing skill’s annoy’s the hell out of me so I figured I’d say something about it here.
Well that’s the end of my rant.
    I loved everything about this show and UTW’s video quality made the watch even better.
    Thank’s for all of the work and if you make all of your future releases with video quality this good, then your sub group is going to be the first place I stop. ^^

    I feel kinda empty. I’m happy and sad that it’s over. It’ll take a long time before I find something I can enjoy to this extent. Thank you for letting me do that.

  44. @UTW: good work and thanks for the effort!! Is one of your next projects Natsume Yujin-Cho San (if it’s any good)?
    @Mrspiffy: ?? is the Kujo family name in kanji. Core meanings of the characters are ‘long-time’ and ‘fortress’. A war is on so presumably they’re all wearing name tags for official identification purposes if they happen to rendered a corpse.

    Thanks for all the hard work, great series! I’d like to second everything fnord said; got better as it went and the first ED is awesome. Great to see a happy ending to the series as well, instead of going the “well this is an artsy kind of show so we have to end with some kind of dramatic tragedy!!!” route that so many take.

    Want to add another thanks here. Thank you for your works these past six months.
    I don’t even understand myself why I like this series as much as I am. Bought the two translated novels before the anime. I was so happy that they decided to do anime because I want to see anime itself and for a chance that Tokyopop will see an increased interest and maybe decide to continue the translation. Too bad they went out of business ЁЯЩБ
    Nice conclusion as well. Cannot say what is, but I think it’s just right.
    Again thanks for your work!

    Just finished this. Really appreciate you guys fixing up the script and the video quality.
    I put this show on hold when Spring 2011 anime started because I felt it would work better if I watched it in arcs, since at that time it was pretty enjoyable but mediocre stuff I didn’t mind waiting.
    I just marathoned 13-24 and it was immediately far better than the first half by so far. One of the best anime I’ve seen in a long time, the second half is an easy 10/10 for me.
    Thanks again, love you guys.

  59. Thx for Gosick very exciting serie
    and one question
    what happened to Index II BD ?

    Thanks for subbing this series. I started this merely because you guys decided to do it but it turned out unexpectedly good. ЁЯЩВ
    I just have to say this somewhere though. With the change in timeline for WWII (if it really was WWII in the series), who bombed the base Kujo was at and who were the Japanese fighting?!?!?!

  68. Jin-Tan on July 7, 2011 at 6:59 am said:

    I got confused at the end. Isn’t Kujo the one with the yellow hair working on the bookstore? And isn’t Kujo’s legs got ripped off? WTF @_@

  69. necroASFD on July 7, 2011 at 11:29 am said:

    @guibin
    Looked like Russian bombers to me..

  70. Can you give us a time frame for when you guys will have the second half batch up by? Just want to know if I’m safe if I start watching the first half now.

  71. @Jin-Tan
I think your first question has the wrong name in it but that guy in the bookstore was the guy that left the kingdom of Seyrun during the investigation at the village of grey wolves iirc.
    for your second question, Kujo missing his legs was probably a dream or a vision. How I see it, he was hit by a bomb and was temporarily crippled (probably broke both his legs).
    Though I wouldn’t be surprised if Kujo had to have a risky surgery that would leave him paralyzed from the waist down and he made it through because of his want to be with Victorique or something like that.
72. @Me
    Hopefully this weekend. We’re just busy with new season stuff at the moment.

    I have strangely mixed feelings about that ending…

  74. Soukyuu on July 8, 2011 at 3:23 pm said:

    First things first, thanks for the work on Gosick!
    About the hair,
I have to agree with Raze, it’s known that hair turns gray from high stress and there are cases of it happening in very short time (a few hours) under extreme conditions. I think Victorique’s condition was extreme enough.
Something that bothered me a bit was
that the fortune telling session told them both that once they’re separated, they won’t be together until death. I guess one can see Kujo’s experience as near death enough to satisfy the condition of the prophecy, so in Victorique’s case it was Cordelia dying in her place, i guess.
I wasn’t completely satisfied with the execution of the ending, but i can’t put my finger on what exactly I didn’t like. The last part after ED just felt kinda rushed.
