Here’s the Fate/Zero season 1 batch, earlier than promised!
Included in this batch is the uncut version of episode 11 that aired several hours ago on Tokyo MX, with about 4 minutes 20 seconds of extra footage excluding the OP. The entire Grail Dialogue should make quite a bit more sense this time round.
Episodes 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 13 have all been v2’d for reasons ranging from fixing a minor typo (episodes 7+13), to minor fixes such as the spelling of Kayneth’s Mystic Code, “Volumen Hydragyrum” (episodes 2+8+9), to doing an additional edit pass (episodes 1+6).
Commence 4-month wait until S2… ;_;
NB: The XviD Batch is identical to the regular releases, apart from the Uncut Episode 11 included.

    @subarufreak: Are you using Haali Media Splitter? Try turning off Thumbnails Extraction under Explorer Integration in the settings. It locks the files for a time after you open the folder that the file is in. Normally it releases it shortly but sometimes it locks up. By the way, if you’re using CCCP then you ARE using Haali. HTH

    Uhm, at which timecode does the new content start in ep11?

  31. Did you guys do something different with how you encoded the subtitles this time around? All of your previous releases have worked perfectly fine inside of VLC nightly 1.2.0-git-20110930-0002 Twoflower; however, the files in this batch release do not want to display the English subtitles. (The files load perfectly well and are otherwise fine in all video and audio aspects.) The subtitles do work in other players (e.g. MPlayer 2, SMPlayer), just not in VLC. I went ahead and got the newest nightly build, 1.3.0-git-20120102-0002 Rincewind, but expectedly this did not change the situation. The video loads perfectly fine but the subtitles do not.
    Could you please consider checking into this? It’s probably a bit much to ask you to re-encode the entire batch just so it works with one media player, but like I said: all of your previous encodes worked perfectly fine with VLC, suggesting that something different was done this time around during the encoding process. It would be great if that “something different” didn’t happen again with your upcoming releases for Carnival Phantasm or the Winter 2012 season.
    In before “VLC is for fags,” “ur doin it wrong,” “y u no codec?” and all the other “you fail for using VLC” derogatory replies posts like this typically get from the trolly masses.

    thanks, nettosama

  37. @Tal
    The encoding process doesn’t affect subtitles in any way, since the subtiltle is just a text (usually with .srt or .ass extension) bundled together with the video (.264) and audio (.aac / .ac3 / .flac) stream into a container (.mkv)
    Reencoding the video (.264) to fix the subtitle (.srt / .ass) would be a pure waste of processing power.
    Are you definitely sure, VLC didn’t update since then?
    If VLC nightlies work like Firefox nightlies, your player might get updates more frequently than you’d think.
    Also, if others “fail for using VLC”, how come you don’t “fail for using anything other than VLC”?
    You’re saying it yourself: other players work fine, only VLC doesn’t.
    So why not use the other players?

  38. Wuntvor on January 2, 2012 at 10:40 pm said:

    @Nettosama
    Thank you for the V2 patch. It worked just fine. I am downloading the “uncut” episode 11, and will seed the batch after it finishes.
    I look forward to future releases from UTW. Keep up the good work!

  39. @Drano:
    Because I happen to like VLC for the portable Swiss army knife that it is. I’m not interested in defending VLC or in extolling its merits here. All I want to know is whether UTW is aware of this problem and whether they intend to fix it or not. I hope that they do but will not be crippled if they do not. As stated previously, I personally am able to play the files fine using other platforms and media players. I would not be utterly marooned if UTW decided not to care about whether their files break VLC or not.
    I am not sure how Firefox nightlies work, but VLC nightlies are separate executables capable of co-existing on the same machine. In other words, you do not upgrade your existing software build so much as you render it obsolete by downloading an entirely new build into an entirely separate directory on the same drive. The fact that all of UTW’s older releases work in both a September ’11 build and a January ’12 build but that none of the files in this batch work in either one of the two builds would seem to suggest a compatibility mismatch between the newest UTW files and VLC period.

  40. The uncut version of episode 11 proves once again that it’s the best episode in Anime history. Even without perfect animation.

  41. Anyone care for an XviD AVI batch….?
    With the ” UNCUT ” ep. 11 and them v2s included…

    @Tal….. and also you seems to forget that VLC nightly builds are experimental versions of VLC that are daily generated from the VLC code that is currently in development. They are UNSTABLE. There’s no 100% guarantee that it will work with all video.

    And thanks Nettosama for the patch 🙂

  48. tech101 on January 3, 2012 at 1:14 am said:

    @martinez others
    Subtitles are separate text-based files called subtitles.ext
    With them are usually added the font(s) font.ext
    Video and Audio are separate files video.ext and audio.ext
    .mkv is a container file where everything is put into in the end. (muxed)
    A container may have more than one file of the same type and there is various content formats and certain other more technical things that a container file supports. etc. “just wikipedia it”
    So VLC has broken subtitle support again? Hahaha, cool.
    @Tai
    You should actually report the subtitle problem and ask questions directly from the VLC devs

  49. martinez on January 3, 2012 at 1:47 am said:

    @tech101…well, i don’t really know the reason. that’s why i said etc. maybe some component on VLC are conflicting with the container / component inside.
    >he subtitles do work in other players (e.g. MPlayer 2, SMPlayer), just not in VLC.
    looks. the problem is within VLC. he should ask VLC dev team.

  50. @tech101
    Seeing as the build works perfectly well with literally EVERY OTHER FILE I have tried on it, and seeing as there’s only one release by one group I can point to so far that is having this problem — UTW’s Fate/Zero batch right here — it is very likely that the VLC team would simply say, “The problem is on their end. Ask them to comply with proper video containment standards” or similar. If this problem were also demonstrably happening, say, with Underwater’s releases, with Commie’s releases, with Doki’s, with gg’s, even with UTW’s older releases, then there would be no doubt that the problem likely rests with the player rather than with the many fansub teams who encoded these files. (Sort of like what happened when we made the jump to 10-bit this past summer/fall.) But when the problem is specific not only to just one group but to just one -release- by just that one group, then the doubt rests more heavily with the release than with the player.
    If I have problems with other releases by other groups in the near future, I’ll be sure to post on the VLC forums and report this as a VLC bug, definitely. Until then, my #1 suspicion remains that UTW did something differently between last week’s episode 13 release and this week’s episode 11v2 release. Hence why I posted here first. Thought I would get this hunch confirmed or denied by the people best able to confirm or deny it — the team themselves.
    Thanks for your reply all the same.

    Thank you for your excellent translation work for Fate Zero. I would just like to ask are you purposely not hardsubbing the karaoke in the 720p releases since you release also a hardsubbed avi? Will hardsubbing the karaoke not reduce the filesize of your 720p mkv releases?
    Thanks a million once again 😀

  68. @asckj1
    AVI’s are hardsubbed because they have to be. MKV are not hardsubbed because they don’t have to be. Also we don’t care about filesize in the mkv’s (well at least I don’t), in fact we’d rather people download more (again, this is probably just me) >_>. Though all jokes aside, 10-15mb of fonts is nothing compared to ruining video with un-removable karaoke.

  69. @Tal
    You say VLC Nightly still works with older releases, but not with the uncut episode 11 from the batch.
    Did you try any other episode from the batch?
    As far as I could see, 11v2 was encoded using the exact same settings as 11v1, the only difference lies in the extra 4-5 minutes of video.
    Maybe VLC had troubles with that?
    @asckj1
    Well, AVI are audio/video only, so softsubbing AVI isn’t possible.
    MKV on the other hand is a so-called container, which is pretty much like a ZIP or RAR, which can contain multiple files of all kinds.
    Also, the increase in filesize when softsubbing is really just trivial compared to the total filesize. The only noticeable impact comes from the fonts, like ar says.
    The only real reason, why someone would want to hardsub only the Karaoke would be, because their PC isn’t fast enough to render the Karaoke-effects in real-time, but you could always try to disable the subtitle animation.

  70. What are the exact timelogs of the uncut scenes?

  75. Are you going to be doing the Fate/Zero Drama CD that comes with the Bluray box set?

  76. @Chris/theone320
    There is the Kirei/Tokiomi scene, but the rest are spliced all over the place. I have no idea what the times for each and every one are but here’s what I know:
    Episode 11 was identical besides the OP upto around ~7m10s, and identical after 19m50s.
    All the missing footage was inserted all over the place between this time range. The reason you can’t find it is because UFOTable did a very good job at cutting it out to begin with, besides the obvious Tokiomi scene.

  77. i thiiink most of the cut out stuff where archer’s lines, precisely his “ll you look like a deflowered virgin now and i like that”-line and his argument betweenrider’s “imma gonna get the grail to get a body” speech and sabers “thats not how a king should be!” so most of the new footage is gil’s part of the “stealing the grail sinc eits gil’s property” argument.

    I have a question, guys. Lately, I have not been able to load any files through torrents anymore.
    The problem is that my downloading rate skyrockets after a few seconds, up to 1.5 MB/s, but the files do not work in the end. When I tried the ping or traceroute command to the ones I got the most speed from, I found out that I can’t even connect to them.
    So basically, there are some peers that I simply cannot connect to in every single torrent there is, and this seems to trigger a bug or something that makes my internet think it is loading something when it is not, and the files end up not working. Does anyone know any solution to this shit?
