Now the wait begins for the BD of this ;_; To me most of the episode felt like a trailer for the real thing…not to say they didn’t correctly capture some of the intensity/emotion of the scenes, but there was enough missing and enough questions that would be left unanswered to those who hadn’t read the light novels beforehand that I feel they almost have to have more planned for future releases. At least a scene explaining the whole Lancelot deal and backstory and better cuts into the beginning and out of the end of the kotomine fight.

22. A good episode but good lord was it rushed. Wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if this one clocks in at over 30 minutes once we get the BDs. This is especially true for …
the bits with Angra Mainyu talking to Kiritsugu about what Kiritsugu’s definition of justice would mean for his wish should Mainyu grant it
. That entire scene, as epic as it was, felt like it was ripped straight out of the Studio DEEN handbook for the production of the UBW movie. “You can’t go so fast as to lose even the people who read the book! But just drop the bare minimum of information necessary to clue them in to what part of the book we’re at and fuck all the rest of the TV viewers who haven’t read the books yet!” I feel like ufotable has never been quite so guilty of this sin as to deserve being compared with Studio DEEN, but today they definitely did. Holy cow was this episode rushed.
.
Bitching about the pacing aside, it was quite nice. Enjoyed the direction and “cinematography” of the Kirei vs. Kiritsugu fight, even if the animation budget seemed wonkier here than elsewhere. The one scene that’s got everyone making Father’s Day jokes was nuts. And the final bits with Saber were wonderfully done.
.
Bring on the BDs! Bring forth the bounteous footage that was left on the cutting room floor!

Amazing episode despite having about half the content.
I felt there should have been a bit more violence in the Kotomine/Kiritsugu fight…
The way the Grail showed its understanding of his wish was an interesting choice… but after the first two ship examples, when it starts rattling off numbers (120-80, 80-60, 40-20, 13-7, 4-3, 2-1) and killing, was completely omitted. I wanted to see groups of people actually being weighed against each other on a scale. That and his reaction to it was one of the bits I was looking forward to.
His final choice was missing a bit of emotion (I loved his scream in the sound drama after he made the decision, and Iri’s scream after he acted on said decision).
I liked the Rain from the Black Grail on the beach.

And how Ufotable timed the airing dates to match how Kiritsugu celebrated Children’s, Mother’s and Father’s day makes me believe THAT was why we had the 6-month delay between seasons 1 and 2… it was all intentional.

Obviously, today’s episode is rushing too fast. Is it because the show needs to be aired in 12 episodes or what ?

I can’t stand that anymore.
Why ufotable screwing so much with the stoty, characters, their relationships, battles and all so much?
I stopped reading LN at saber&lancerVScaster place, but i’m well aware about future events.
God, I was waiting for this and previous episode for, like, 9 months.
After gorgeous battles Gil vs Bers, I was expecting truly epic battle versus Iskander.
What did i get? Poor graphics, cheap animation, almost all key talking was cut off. They didn’t even bother to draw weapons inside GoB, so Gil was firing air arrows, Ea looks like spinning shit. Even in deen f/sn it looked more powerful.

Okay, to hell Iskander, there should be one more magnificent scene – fight with Lancelot, who was the most enigmatic and very powerful character all along, and what?
-Hello, I’m Lancelot.
-OMFG that can’t be! Well, I don’t care much, though.
*clash clash for, like, 10 seconds in summary, Lans totally owns*
*next frame – Lans is penetreated. SABER KILLS PAINLANCELOT WITH ONE BLOW.
No talking, no emotons, no background history, key battles go to hell, better we make episode about loli-Rin, couple about young Kerry, and relatively high-quality fight between kirei and emiya, including slo-mo and all.
Ah, and comes goes Gilgamesh with his new bubble weapons. At least the drew something inside circles, this is a bit of a progress.
Looks like all money ufotable had, they spend on 5 episode, and the rest – on 14
Well, it all could be overlooked, if they would fix and redraw all in BD, but that wouldn’t, because they did nothing in first BD.
I’m really disapointed and sad now.

Seriously, could someone explain what the heck is wrong with this episode? The first half is a cluster fuck of things that happen with abrupt scene changes, Saber being pushed back (physically and emotionally) during the fight with Berserker and then suddenly winning. Only the second half with the Grail explaining how it would grant Kiritsugu’s wish made some sense (even though I thought the grail would only manifest and grant wishes once all the Servants were defeated). Some of the posts are indicating that this episode isn’t a complete one (ie. there’s a full version when the Blue Ray version is released). Is this the case or did the studio just kinda pull off an Evangelion?

33. adsf on June 17, 2012 at 8:02 am said:

@ David – Saber won because the Crest Worms inside Kariya mostly died and thus could no longer supply anymore mana to Berserker. So Berserker more or less stopped moving and then Saber just went it for the kill.
Everyone is more or less missing the point that it’s hard to add in the descriptions explanations in the “narration” in the LN to an anime, where there is no narrator to start with. And there was a shitload of those. Once you cut out the explanations, naturally to outsiders, the whole thing makes no sense.

34. Cyrill on June 17, 2012 at 8:19 am said:

@adsf
It was very easy to show. For exapmle, Kariya could wisper smth like “I can’t hold on, my mana run over… i cant’t supply bers anymore.. sorry sacura”. Or anything, there was plenty of ways.
Then Berserker would get slower and stoped, and Saber killed him.
But there was NOTHING.
First frame – Lans was fucking Saber in all wholes, and next frame – he is killed. WHY?
Why even bother to include him in series or to reveal his personality?

meh, sry for mistakes

36. Cyou on June 17, 2012 at 8:34 am said:

@Cyrill: Not true. Kariya wasn’t exactly in a good condition to say pretty much anything (for reference, see any time Berserker draws mana from him), and Berserker was described simply as coming to a complete stop. Not slowing down, nothing.
Berserker actually stopping could have been shown, though, as a simple way of doing it. Kariya falls over (already there), Berserker freezes, Saber impales him. Maximum of 10 seconds that would add a little more understanding to it would have been nice.
Unfortunately, Lancelot’s backstory section would probably have been a little long for it.

and as fo the bitching, well it wouldve been nice if they maybe showed an “inside view” of kariya’s body with the worms and them dying from mana loss and kariya beeign in pain during that ro somethign liek that, but i guess there just wasnt enough time.

38. Cyrill on June 17, 2012 at 8:42 am said:

@Cyou: even that would be better than what did we get.
To show that Saber lost her will to fight, was overwhelmed, Lancelot was about to make fatal strike, Kariya fainted, Lanc became frozen, Saber took advantage.
I really can’t see, why the most moving and toasty part was totally destroyed, not even ‘cut’

39. Cyou on June 17, 2012 at 9:30 am said:

@Cyrill: I’ll admit that.
How it’s currently portrayed implies that Kariya’s collapse was a result of Berserker being stabbed and not the other way around.

51. przemoc on June 17, 2012 at 1:56 pm said:

First, thank you UTW for constantly bringing FZ with decent script to the masses. Much appreciated!
@Marelt: “the song called that plays during that fight scene?”
I guess you’re talking about “the battle is to the strong”, 6th track from “Fate-Zero Original Soundtrack I” (“I”, because it was used a few times during first season too, like in eps 7+8 during Kiritsugu-Kayneth thread).
@Tal: “A good episode but good lord was it rushed.”
Fully agree about the abnormal speed of plot development (as it was shown, it’s hard to really call it ‘development’). Even though I haven’t read F/Z novels, some time switches and hops are blatantly disturbing, reminding me too of disastrous UBW movie pace.
@Tal: “Enjoyed the direction and “cinematography” of the Kirei vs. Kiritsugu fight”, Cyrill’s “relatively high-quality fight between kirei and emiya”
As for K-vs-K fight, if directing was not bad, its animation was actually mostly awful and jerky. Even drawing was inferior compared to other parts. For example look at the all “different” frames of Kiritsugu holding the gun in 0:54 (before still shot is showed up) – they are all terrible, yet not exceptional in this episode.
@Cyrill: “Poor graphics, cheap animation”
Animation quality issues are unfortunately a recurring problem of F/Z, happening in two scales: at episodes level and at the scenes level. BDs for 1st season fixed many problems, by redrawing faces, adding highlights, some CG or just improving overall picture quality (that one mostly by the features of used medium alone, but it wouldn’t be possible if input video quality wasn’t higher than in previous productions [check KnK and it’s supposititious 720p internal storage quality]), but AFAIR it didn’t go any further, beside introducing unseen before new footage. It’s interesting whether poor GoB shots will be improved for BluRay release, but I wouldn’t have too high hopes for that. Despite that, practically all GoB and weapon firing shots are still better than in UBW movie.
@Cyrill: “And about graphics…”, “Were there the same drawers?”
Well, they could be not and it’s nothing wrong (unless it means worse visual quality, of course). It’s pretty old practice to have different people responsible for same thing in different eps. Like in the times of classic anime production: Sailor Moon, there were many animation directors – from poor ones like Masahiro Ando and Akira Nakamura to great ones like Kazuko Tadano and Ikuko Ito. For this simple reason some episodes looked atrocious, but others were simply stunning.
Looking at the given samples particularly. It’s not always whole bad or whole good thing. GoB from ep 5 vs ep 24 is a good example, because ripples of space look better in ep 5 (in ep 24 they are way too blurry), yet blades in ep 24 look more detailed and intriguing than in ep 5 in your sample (but also less crisper, I have to admit it). Though it’s not the overall truth for whole time – e.g. check ugly 19:50 or fucked up ripples in 21:03. Quality is going up and down, like a sine wave, for the whole latest ep.
@ranting-myself
Quality complaining aside (I guess we just all like to watch beautiful graphics and animation, shown in a faithful adaptation; also we expect more from better studios than some others), F/Z is still a nice show, above your average anime, that I am fully enjoying while watching despite its inevitable flaws here and there. It’s also thanks to ufotable, that’s why I’ll possibly check any of their future projects, like Girls’ Work or FSN: Heaven’s Feel (that would be nice, right? :>).

>F/Z is still a nice show, above your average anim
Truly it is, but my ass is being blown to pieces, when i think, how much cooler i could be, if ufotable cared less about minor shit and just gave some extra min to the main plot and relationship between characters, especially KxK and Saber-Berserker, battles and animation aside.
Because in the end, F/Z really became like UBW – quite hard to follow a plot, which is not developed at all.
Also
> for 1st season fixed many problems, by redrawing faces, adding highlights, some CG or just improving overall picture quality
I specially downloaded 11 ep to see, if they redraw unwatchable “flat”, pallid and longnecked Gilgamesh. Nope. And this was the most eyecatching QUALITY episode.

55. @przemoc: Make no mistake, friend, that I chose the words “direction and ‘cinematography'” quite deliberately. 🙂 I agree with you 100% that the facial animation in the Kirei vs. Kiritsugu fight was horrendous compared with what we’re used to getting out of ufotable. Just like fans are noting, I too agree that this “horrendous” animation is still light years ahead of the animation you’ll find in most other 2011-2012 series, but the fall is so much harder when you know that the studio is capable of 10/10 greatness and then, for what amounts to the climactic series finale (since next week is pretty much wrap up), they deliver to you 8/10 or 7/10 quality. That 7/10 suddenly looks and feels like a 4/10 or a 5/10, just like how when you enter a theater room off the bright summer streets your vision is pitch black at first even though after your eyes adjust you can clearly appreciate that the room is dimly lit. What is objectively at least a 7/10 is suddenly thrust into the realms of a perceived 4/10 owing to the excellence of the animation in earlier episodes.
.
When I said I appreciated the direction and the “camera angles” (the “cinematography,” for lack of a better term in animation), what I meant was that I liked how the director and the lead animator decided to interpret this fight from the novel and bring it to life on screen. Some fans are already poking fun at the part where …
Kirei fights Kiritsugu one-armed with his Executor-level martial arts prowess while Kirei tries desperately to slash him with a knife
… but I really loved that bit. Thought it was awesome. Shows just what a mothertruckin’ badass Kotomine Kirei is. FSN really wanted, really needed Fate/Zero to come along and develop this backstory for Kirei, to show us why he was such a fearsome adversary in FSN and why he took his competition in the Fifth Grail War so non-seriously. This is why. The direction in this fight was good, I feel, but the animation really dragged it down. It was hard to appreciate the faces (which blueprint-wise were amazing) when they felt so rough and poorly animated compared with the fare we got in the accursed Loli Rin episode that fucked over the Banquet of the Kings or the equally questionable full-length Alimango Island episode that occupied fewer than ten pages in the original novel. Those episodes were gorgeous, especially the Philippines one which looked honest-to-god like Kara no Kyoukai OAV material in places, and it’s such a shame that they fucked over the de facto finale so badly by draining the studio of their project budget.
.
And yeah, using the periods as poor man’s paragraph breaks for lack of a functional {br} or {p}. No idea why these tags aren’t supported while other less useful tags are but whatever.

56. Bradley on June 17, 2012 at 3:40 pm said:

Holy FUCK let me tell you something.
I’ve seen a lot of gruesome shit. Titles where lovable characters die in a horrible accidents, murders in cold blood, kids getting killed for no apparent reason…
But the scene where Kerry shoots Ilya, her petite body hits the floor, and Iri WAILS and thrashes… Fucking hell, that scene chilled me to the bone. I think her voice actress deserves some kind of award for her play – it was nightmarish, full of despair and sorrow, and from that point even got better.
Whenever I’ll hear her in other works, I would remember that one moment that shook me.

65. Whoops, before I forget: TL suggestion for staff to implement for the BDs come September. When Saber says 「貴様は…そんな戯言に…私の聖杯を奪うのか!?」 at 20m12s, you guys translated what should have been “my Holy Grail” instead as “the Holy Grail.” It’s a small and subtle difference, I’ll totally grant you that, but I feel it’s nonetheless an important one. Part of what electrified this scene for me and I’m sure for a lot of other viewers was just how possessive Saber’s language indicated she was of the Grail, that it was the one thing she was not willing to give up to anybody. She’d lay down her sword, even her very life if it meant getting that grail and getting a chance to save Britain. Acknowledging the Grail was Archer’s possession was the one thing she was not willing to budge on, something foreshadowed at the Banquet of the Kings when she criticized Iskandar for pursuing the Grail in spite of the fact that he acknowledged Archer’s claim of ownership.

@ jusef: You nailed it….if there was one thing I was incredibly impressed by it was that moment. I absolutely cringed when I heard her grief for “Ilya” despite the fact I knew neither Iri nor Ilya were “real” – they were just some form the grail took.
I still standby my earlier comments that this episode was handled pretty badly; It felt as if they cut pasted segments of scenes together. I agree with Cyou that it seemed that Lancelot dying triggered Kariya’s death and not the other way around.

So, either UTW banned me or my country (or both), or my country banned UTW. I can’t access this site anymore if it isn’t through a proxy.
So anyways, it this show gonna have 25 or 26 (25 + special/ova) episodes?

Dude… Epic episode of F/Z… Lol, Kerry… Nice way to celebrate Father’s day, for sure! To kill your entire family to save six (Seven, maybe) billion people…. This series is the first anime series to be divided by ZERO ever! Way to epic….

How awesome is this if this was Shirou vs Kirei in Heaven’s Feel.
@NateRiver
Yep. The handbook from the BD of season 1 mentioned that they used the Dark Knight theme unto Fate/Zero. I guess this is their way of tribute to the movie.
