Seitokai no Ichizon DVD

Before you ask this isn’t a UTW project, it was a side project I did on my own with the help of a lot of others along the way. I can’t even count the amount of hours spent working on this, between the enormous amount of typesetting, to the enormous amount of dialogue that needed retiming/line splitting to the ridiculous lyrics of the endings, to the amount of time I had to spend with Yatta to fix up all the bad cuts/double hard tc’s/etc on the dvd to the amount of encoding time required to make these look good! But I gotta admit I had a blast doing it, and a huge huge thanks to everyone who helped along the way in some form or another.
The typesetting is a little heavy at times (all softsubbed) but hopefully it shouldn’t cause problems due to the low DVD resolution. It was watched through on multiple systems, and spare a few signs that lagged slightly on the typesetting raw (1024×576) on a dual-core it was fine. I won’t go ahead and make any hardsubbed xvid’s just yet but if there are lag problems I will happily make a 480p XviD release up.
I really enjoyed this series and I hope you do too! I hope everyone has a great New Years!

  1. Just when I think I can’t love you guys anymore…
Up until now I don’t think there’s been a decent DVD rip with properly done subs. Thank you!

  2. Thanks ar. Never deleted a TV rip quicker.
and you’re just lucky you’re not going to melt today in the heat. Lucky man..

  3. Wow this was A surprise. But a incredibly awesome surprise! πŸ˜€ I have no idea whose copy I have atm but theres no doubt in my mind I am definitely deleting the version I have archived and downloading your version to πŸ˜€

  4. Oh god I waited for this so much. Finally 12 episodes of Minatsu deliciousness on DVD quality… Thank you from the bottom of my heart / back of the knee / bellybutton / etc.
Also, _ar, you’re a true bro, a winrar in teh internets. Should I be a girl, you’d be mai hasbando~

  5. Well, this one was one my ‘Plan-to-watch’-list, but you releasing it might’ve just increased it priority.
Just one question to all the people here who say there wasn’t a good quality version of this show yet. Didn’t SS-Eclipse do this show? Or was their release thdisappointing?

  6. I’m not complaining or anything, actually, I’m already downloading it (obviously because of all the typesetting and editing), but can someone tell me something?
Is image quality for this 480p DVD release superior to 576p TV release from Eclipse?

  7. @Merushi
There was nothing wrong with the SS-Eclipse version, it’s just that theirs was only the TV version.
Carbon did a DVD version using SS-Eclipse subs but it was terrible. There was no karaoke for the OP and ED and (far more crucially) none of the signs/board writing translations were there, despite being in the original subs.
So this will hopefully be the best of everything. DVD quality (There are a few “censor bars” on the TV version, not that many though as the fanservice isn’t that extreme on this show) and decent subs.

  8. I watched this show only for the random humor. Personally I found it just as terrible as every other DEEN show. The art and animation killed me. But I did enjoy it nontheless for all the cameos and his harem shouts.

  9. @Luke. Considering it’s DEEN who did this show, I doubt the DVD quality is much better than the TV version, if at all.

  10. @hai
Thanks for the respond (not that I wouldn’t have downloaded UTW’s, but I would’ve been surprised if SS-Eclipse’s would’ve been bad πŸ™‚
I’ll be downloading this one soon.
I’ve got some anime to finish first and my harddisk is quite full at the moment ^^’

  11. Hahaha! _ar, you really cut this one close, didn’t you? When you said “it would be out before the New Year”, I didn’t think you’d release it like this.
I saw the batch being offered on Bakabt and decided to come here and confirm if it was you or not.
Congrats on completing this batch, and thank you for all of the time you poured into this. I’ve been looking forward to this since I first caught wind of this in the summer time.
I can safely say that this year ended on a good note. Happy Holidays to you too, man.

  12. @speck123
I second that. My router gets re-booted every 5 mins if I try to download by Torrents. :S
Anyhow, I was not expecting this from you guys. This just made it that much easier to say “hello” to 2011. πŸ˜€

  14. If only i held back on watching this a day more. Just finished the series with the tv ver. Oh well, i’m still getting this, thanks UTW!

  15. Ya wow. I see the post and expect the usual one or two episodes but completed series right off the bat…bravo and much appreciated.

  16. HELL YEAH but I doubt they’ll do a Blu-Ray release. If they did I’d do them in a flash though, especially since it would just require encodes + some typesetting fixing (a lot of the TS’ing would probably lag on 1080p lol~)

  17. hahaha intro before the OP started was classic.
cant wait to watch the rest of this.
enjoy your new years holiday, looking forward to more great subs in 2011

  18. Um, so this was just a DVD release with SS-Eclipse’s subs. I can deal with that, but saying that there was no translation of the signs and no karaoke on Eclipse’s original release couldn’t be farther from the truth because in fact there were. What video were you watching, may I ask?

  19. Good thing I waited until there’s a good quality Dvd version with good subs πŸ˜€
Now I can finally watch this.

  20. @Skeptical who said that Eclipses release had no sign/Karaoke translations? quoting from what hai said
“There was nothing wrong with the SS-Eclipse version, it’s just that theirs was only the TV version.”
“Carbon did a DVD version using SS-Eclipse subs but it was terrible. There was no karaoke for the OP and ED and (far more crucially) none of the signs/board writing translations were there, despite being in the original subs.”
Eclipses release was fully translated etc but they only did the TV version. Carbon did a dvd version and used SS-Eclipse subs but for some reason took out the sign/board writing translations. There was no dvd version released by SS-Eclipse.

  21. This was an amazing present. Seikon was one of my fave series and, while the SS-Eclipse was OK, your version is much better (i.e. signs and so forth). Currently re-watching, and having more laughs.
    Thanks ever so much!

  22. OMG guys, you’re not reading correctly. This IS basically the Static-Subs/Eclipse version, but re-mastered to the DVD rips. -_-
MPC (latest nightly) + Haali Media Splitter = works perfectly, chapters and all
    HAPPY NEW YEAR MOTHERFUCKERS

  23. @Sumatori
Pretty much that sums it up!
It uses SS-Eclipse dialogue which has been lightly edited with a few translation fixes and some line splitting (since there was a ton of 3 line dialogue that could be split perfectly), in other words just polished up a little since it was pretty good to start with.
The typesetting/op/ed/insert kara & translations are all my own work though.(quite a few translators helped along the way with the translations where I got stuck cause of ridiculous lyrics)

  24. @WetMoe
You can always grab SubDesu’s releases, it appears that they’ve caught up. They’re not usually the best but they are acceptable for watching in my humble opinion and are an alternative.

  25. @ar
Thanks again for this release. Unfortunately I’m having a couple of lag/skip issues with it and was wondering if you had any ideas as to the cause.
During the OP it will lag/skip frames when the title text comes up. I also skips a bit on some signs. Now the odd thing is, it does this in MPC, but if I play the file in Windows Media Player (of all things…), it plays fine and doesn’t skip.
Can’t really figure out why it works in one and not the other. Just to be on the safe side, I removed all codecs and my (slightly older) CCCP install and started from scratch with a fresh install, but the problem is still there.
Any ideas? I’m playing it back on a dual core laptop. It’s not amazing but it really should be able to handle this.

  26. Ya my only issue is when the title text comes up but it’s no biggie. Not like I don’t know what it says lol. Thanks again this series, it is pretty damn funny. Parodies all the way.

  27. @Hai
LOL that’s just weird man (the WMP playing it fine I mean!).
That was one of the signs that did slightly lag on a dual core. There wasn’t much I could do about it without killing the blur which it stupidly needs (dumb title!).
The other option might be to use MPC-HC internal sub-renderer but I believe that has some flickering subtitle issues when a ton of subs come on the screen at once. You can try setting that to 0 buffer and see if it works fine though. The only other thing I can do is release a hardsubbed XviD which will definitely fix it. A couple of signs had font related lag but again the typeface was correct so there wasn’t much I could do without making them look weird. I tried my best to make everything as lag free as possible though!

  28. @Luke Well, some of their old stuff is good. But in recent years they’ve gone bad and I mean the actual quality of the animation itself. The frame-rate, the art, how the quality dies drastically as the show drags on. But personally, I like Rurouni Kenshin and Higurashi myself, although I wasn’t happy with Furuba anime.

  29. @Hai

You can unrar these into the same dir and load them as external subs it SHOULD fix the OP sign lag and one sign I know definitely lags in ep04. This is the best I can do without knowing which signs lag for you and their timecodes/which episode. No signs lag for me (I am using a quad core though) so I can’t test them myself.
I’ll be happy to help you out, but you’ll need to pm me on irc and give me details so I can attempt to lag fix them for you since as I previously stated I get no lag anywhere~

  30. @ar
Thanks for all your help mate. Since then I had another look and I think WMP probably was lagging as well, it just seemed to deal with it better. It would lag a few frames and then “catch up” a few seconds later (so the frames after would play faster until it synced back with the audio). But for WMP the audio never skips.
I tried that fix and it did indeed work, no lag on the title at all. So I at least have that as a fix now, thanks πŸ˜€
Just wondering, what can cause lag issues here? I’m not too knowledgeable when it comes to the ins and outs of encoding and how these subs are rendered, is there a reason your computer gets more “strained” when it comes to rendering sign translations etc as opposed to normal subs?
I don’t really use IRC but I can probably fire it up if PMing is easier.

  31. @motaku96
I kinda had no choice with the SS-Eclipse subs since no translator dared to touch this show and plus their dialogue TL was pretty good anyhow. Kunio-kun did a good job with the show considering how annoying it must have been to translate! Some things here and there needed fixing but nothing show-stopping. I’m glad you enjoyed the show ^.^

  32. whahaha….i’ve re-watched it again….and still…hilarious…. XD
    btw…..with my dual-core notebook….it’s still lagy but that’s fine πŸ™‚
i plan to burn it anyways πŸ˜€

  33. Hey man! Sorry been afk on irc whenever you’ve msgd me. All i can recommend is to use MPC-HC internal sub-renderer if you get lag on a notebook. I tried to make it as light weight as I could but some signs just need more cpu power to play. If you need fonts + scripts (to encode to dvd or w/e) just let me know and I’ll throw them up. You can demux them too of course, but it’s probably easier for me to upload them.
Glad you enjoyed it! It’s a damn hilarious show!

  34. Thanks for subbing Seitokai no Ichizon! I had originally loved it when Eclipse released it, and now that you guys have done it, it’s plenty of reason to watch the whole series again πŸ˜€
You guys have easily become my new favorite fansub group (no flattery. for reals).

  35. @ar…nah that’s okay πŸ˜‰ back then i wanted to ask how to hardsubbed .mkv
maybe u can tell me when u online in irc πŸ˜‰
watch it in dvd player? why i never thought about that? XD that’s good idea since i always watch in notebook and after that just burn it for the sake of archiving….maybe sometimes πŸ˜€
of course it’s hilarious! i had watched its tv version and i still lol’ed hard when i watch the DVD ver….. XD
    still, thank you πŸ˜€

  36. Finished watching this series, was surprisingly good. Hadn’t heard of this anime before but very glad I got to watch it. Thanks for the work.

  37. @ar
Meh, I can only assume that there were no CC for SS-Eclipse when they translated the series as there were some minor inaccurate translations when I compare the dialogues with the ones in the novels. Of course, Kunio did a good job anyway, considering that the characters talk at the speed of light. Can’t imagine the horror of translating that show >__>
Just to ask, are there any special scenes that weren’t in the TV series? I happen to have the SS-Eclipses releases, and if there aren’t any major script changes, maybe I can just get the scripts from you and shift it a little with SS-E releases instead of downloading the whole series again. Perhaps I can pass you the differences of the dialogues with the ones in the novels, if you care to go through over the pain of script checking and patching πŸ˜›

  38. @anon
Um I don’t think there were an extra scenes as such, but you’ll have a blast retiming the signs, and the ivtc may differ quite a bit too since the DVD’s were soft-telecined very badly and not a clean hard telecine like done for TV.
Also eclipses is hardsubbed, so you won’t be able to use most of the typesetting/kara. I’m not sure if Mentar fixed the luma problem on the SS-Eclipse release either, I don’t have it anymore to check. But basically they screwed the luma range up on their source post-editing or something, so both the TV and the DVD’s were wrong. I fixed it up best I could since it’s impossible to get them 100% without knowing what the original colours “SHOULD” have been.
Here’s the scripts if you want them though. The fonts are like 120mb compressed, so I’ll have to upload them tomorrow or something for you.
    http://www.mediafire.com/?lgs2r492imb6o6n

  39. Thank god there’s still a release in 8-bit…
    Thank you so very much…!
    So… A side project eh…
No wonder its not listed on the project pages…
