UTW (Unlimited Translation Works) was formed in the Spring of 2010 by a small group of anime-loving internet buddies. Its founding members had several stints in various other groups, working on projects ranging from doujinshi to full-length movies. Inspired to start our own group, we gathered a few people we had gotten to know over our fan-translation career and released our first independent English-subbed anime episode, the first episode of B Gata H Kei, on April 2nd, 2010. Over time, we have welcomed additional skilled and dedicated members into our team, and we are hopeful for what the future has in store for our group.
We are a quality speedsub group and believe in the efficacy of a small, skilled, and dedicated group of staff members. We work to provide readable subtitles that add to the viewing experience while staying true to the source material. Our very high quality standards are based on what we ourselves would expect to see on our screen. We strive to find the perfect balance between speed and quality by reviewing our performance with each release and making improvements to how we work if necessary. And when a series ends, we review the scripts for the entire series for possible corrections and improvements before releasing a batch version, true to our belief that, in the end, speed is no substitute for quality.
In accordance to our motto of producing work we ourselves would like to see, our releases are completely softsubbed, down to the typesetting and karaoke (meaning you can watch the entire raw, untouched video in all its full glory by simply turning off the subtitles). We do not believe that the minimal aesthetic gain made possible with hardsubbing is worth permanently altering the video, no matter how non-intrusive. However, as with everything, there is a disadvantage in going 100% softsub: compatibility. We strongly recommend using MPC-HC with CCCP to play our releases, as that is the only setup we guarantee will work. If you are not on Windows, MPlayer is a good alternative.
