Sup. We have a new movie release for you all: the “new” Fullmetal Alchemist movie, The Sacred Star of Milos!
A Fullmetal Alchemist release by us might seem somewhat random, but it actually isn’t. I was forced on pain of death persuaded into subbing the Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood TV series starting around episode 38 or so until the end under TMD-Raze, one of my first forays into the world of anime fansubbing; a few of us would later branch off to form this ‘ere group, UTW Fansubs. We decided to sub this movie for nostalgia’s sake, and here’s the finished result!
Just saying though, I still think FMA is terrible and I’m glad this ordeal is over. I guess shounen shit really isn’t my thing.
With that bit of trivia over, here are some words from the other staff who worked on this release:
ar (Typesetter/Encoder):
So this marks the end of a legacy, from the days of subbing FMAB with my bros Sindalf and Raze under the Tomodachi flag. With the release of this movie those days now come to an end. It’s still fun working with these guys, so I suppose the bigger picture would be that this is merely a milestone in our adventures or something like that. PS Movies are effort, don’t do them, lest you be subbing for days straight~
Sindalf (Timer):
So how long as it been? Almost three years since I started fansubbing starting with FMAB? I can very well remember waking up at 8am every day and calling into work in order to get off and fansub all morning. All things considered, the FMAB project has changed my life. I met so many different people out on the internet, some of whom I made ragequit, some of them I still talk to this day, and some of those people are the ones I worked with on this project. Furthermore, if I didn’t start that project I wouldn’t have joined the o9k fansub groups I am in today or any of that. If it weren’t for it I wouldn’t have even met all the people that I consider to be friends, not a single one of them. I have a lot to be thankful for because of this. It’s kinda weird really thinking back about how things could have been different but oh well here we are. I am a very lucky person indeed. Technically without the FMAB project UTW wouldn’t even have existed since some of the founding staff first did anime subbing on that show.
Oh, if you actually care about the movie then I will be the first to say that its quite bad and everyone hated working on it, except me of course. Flying Nazi werewolves. __ar stinx.
I assumed my usual role of Translator/Editor/QC. fnord translated the OP/ED, which I then edited.
I also have to give props to a kind individual who does not wish to be named for helping me translate part of the movie while I was at work. Thanks!
I CAN FINALLY GET BACK TO MY MAJIKOI S And there we have it! Please enjoy the movie!

This movie looks pretty bad, but I’ll watch it with the same sense of civic duty with which you so graciously subbed it for us.

I’m amazed that you actually managed to stop playing Majikoi S just to sub something else.

5. @ Spinarakk
It was hell, man. Having to pass over more Majikoi S for this shitty movie was like going from 100% enjoyment to 100% torture. A -200% enjoyment level change, bro.

8. Hm im a fan of FMA (B), but i dunno what to think of unrelated, random movies.. the story itself is finished, so its just kind of a totally unrelated thing, this here, right? doesnt sound too good… who was responsible for te backstory in this?

9. I couldn’t care less about FMA, but I’m nevertheless amused.
Anyway, if you don’t like shounen, I guess no Evangelion Q and Final from you? ๐Ÿ˜›

10. Holy shit. Been waiting for someone to sub this and you guys release it ๐Ÿ˜€ Thanks so damn much! Waiting for the 1080p release ๐Ÿ˜›

Just wanted to give you a heads up! Maybe my download corrupted, but I’m not able to play the 720p file on the latest version of VLC or with Windows Media Player with K-lite mega codec pack. Audio works in VLC but I get a green-screen for the video. Media player simply skips forward to 3:20ish and hangs with a black screen and no audio. I’ve never had problems playing MKV files before, but I’ll try updating K-lite and see if that helps.

28. Horizonz on February 12, 2012 at 4:27 pm said:

Video confirmed working with K-Lite Meg Codec Pack 8.3.2. Download here (button on right side):
http://www.codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_mega.htm
Things to note during installation:
1. When selecting components to install, UNCHECK the ‘players’ box. We don’t want Windows Media Player Classic!!
2. When selecting a player for media file associations, select Windows Media Player.
3. When associating media files with Windows Media Player, check the boxes next to both ‘video files’ and ‘audio files’. This will associate ALL video/audio filetypes with Media Player.
4. Make sure you UNCHECK all of the toolbar installs/etc.
Have fun!

Is the 720p release 10 bit?

30. @Horizonz
1. Vlc sucks
2. the reason VLC didn’t work is because the latest stable build doesn’t support 10bit files yet
3. Windows media player sucks
4. If you want a codec pack get Combined Community Codec Pack instead of K-lite
5. It’s called media player classic not windows media player classic and has no association with windows at all (Why do so many people add windows on to the name?)
6. Media player classic is probably the best media player available for windows

Shounen shit? I didn’t like the remake of FMA, I read the manga and it wasn’t as good as the first tv show in my opinion. The ending, the parallel worlds linked to ours were a terrific idea! And the movie ending it all was also very good. I’m writing this from the point of view from a 34 year old.
But I watched the whole remake, and I will watch this movie. I’m not expecting too much, but I’m sure it will be worth the time. Well I hope it will, because time is something very precious (it really is if you have a family, a job and friends).
Thank you very much for your hard work!

Thank you very much!
Question, though. Anyone else getting weird artifacts in the dark areas? I’m pretty sure all my codecs are up to date but I’m noticing some of the stuff I’ve downloaded the past week looks like this while all my old stuff looks normal. Because of that I’m not sure it’s my end or the downloads.

43. wraithe on February 13, 2012 at 2:11 am said:

Scratch that. I disabled the h264 transform filter option in MPC and that seems to have cleared the issue. It’s weird but I’m not going to question it.

44. @wraithe: Sounds like what 10bit material typically looks like when you try to play it with MPC stock codecs* (i.e. not using madVR, libav, et cetera).
*) Unless there’s a new version out with working 10bit compatibility out of the box.
As for the release, really looking forward to this. FMA is one of my favourite anime series ever so I need to watch it in 1080p. ๐Ÿ˜€

46. Hello, I just recently downloaded this and I am unable to see subtitles while watching the movie using media player classic. I checked to see if they were on, as well as downloading the newest version of it and still can’t see subtitles. I tried it in vlc which didn’t work as stated above so is there anyway to get the subtitles working in media player classic?

I like the FMA fiction in general, but this movie was a huge disappointment. Beyond the lameness of some of the eccentric elements such as the one Sindalf mentions in his comments, there were so many holes in the story that altogether I found it hard to stay engaged. Trying pretty hard to avoid spoilers so here goes…
What’s with the guy’s telepathy with the minions? That’s unexplained and doesn’t make sense to anything given in the setting of the FMA universe to my knowledge. Also, what’s with the minions’ transformations back and forth? If the boss is the one changing them, why even bother changing their form at all? They never really spend time doing anything in human form anyway so why bother?
I’m a bit fuzzy on healing alchemy in FMA, but I was sure Dr. Marco and others needed a philosopher’s stone to do it. In this movie, they do it several times without batting an eye and it just doesn’t seem right, but since it’s just for small cuts and whatnot, I can let it slide. Since it’s just for small cuts and whatnot, why bother with alchemy for it? It doesn’t really seem all that practical or pertinent to the story, so why did they put those scenes in? Oh well, that’s minor.
The one person is on the floor bleeding to death and rather then simply fire the automatic weapon strapped on their arm at the madman who just stabbed them, they pull out a knife, prop themselves up and stab the guy with a non-fatal injury. Are they really that incompetent? Even if the gun were out of ammunition, the guy shrugged the knife wound off like it never even happened which is another curious point because that kind of injury should’ve at the very least made it a lot harder for him to move if not severing his spinal cord and leading to massive internal bleeding. His gun obviously wasn’t out of ammunition so why wouldn’t they have reloaded as well?
If the valley goes all the way around as depicted in the various shots, wouldn’t the magma go the other way around as well, making a one-sided defense plan rather short-lived? Isn’t magma super hot wouldn’t Al have been melting and some of the clothing been bursting into flames?
If he could control the magma and launch it at her without touching it, why couldn’t she have also controlled the magma being thrown at her and diverted it or hardened it like she did with the magma on the ground?
They tell him the place was destroyed and he’s all like, “I didn’t even need the place. I already have everything I needed to know memorized to recreate it myself” – Why did he even bother staking out the place for five years to begin with? Why not just go ahead and make his own and get to work on his dastardly plan? He had forces with whom he had an inexplicable telepathic connection watching the target of his revenge so why didn’t he just put the revenge plan on a back-burner until a more opportune time while he got on with his actual goal? He had five years to improve his plan and he didn’t even consider a faster approach?
If he had a stone, couldn’t he have just healed his injuries himself? Why walk around with a mask? Could he not have executed his revenge a bit more effectively with a face? Maybe sneak in and kill the target while he was in prison? For that matter, if his minions were all transforming and stuff, why not just have a minion infiltrate the prison in human form or break in while in the other form, kill the target in prison and escape?
There are more, but these are the more glaring discontinuities and poor writing that I remember off the top of my head. Would it have killed someone to put some jokes in or something? This movie feels like it was more or less phoned in by the creators. I watched it, but I can’t imagine paying to do so.If anything, I’d say it detracts from the fiction, but any diehard FMA fans will surely watch it out of a sense of brand loyalty. At least it was pretty.

It’s anime. In movie form. About alchemy. Based on characters from a manga. Which is fiction. So they can do whatever they like with it.

I was really looking forward to this being a good movie, but after watching it I can’t blame raze for hating to have to work on it. the action was all good and all but character developement and pacing just seemed to be non existant ๐Ÿ™

66. Thanks a bunch for the release, after about 50 minutes though the timing of sound and subs just went to hell. Closing out of my media player and reopening it seemed to fix the problem temporarily but it would lose sync every 5 minutes or so to where the sound and subs made no sense. Idk if this is a codec issue on my part but if not a v2 would be appreciated. ๐Ÿ™‚

67. @Moi
VLC (still) doesn’t support 10bit, so you’ll get a green screen when trying to play 10bit content.
As for the audio in MPC: Is the audio set to “mute”? As far as I can see, the audio is AC3 which should play just fine. Make sure you enable the internal filter for AC3 (or if you’re using a different filter, make sure it’s configured correctly)
Also, what do you mean with “wrong speed at start”? Is the video too fast/slow, or is it the audio?
Anyways, I recommend you use the LAV filters and disable both of MPC’s internal filter for H264/AVC.

68. Fantastic movie. Fantastic Quality. Just wanted to say thanks for all your hard work. The quality and fansubs were just great and I loved the film. Had some great scenes and the pacing was fantastic. Cheers.

You all just made my day so much better! Thank you for this release!

83. Thank you for the release. it was a pleasant surprise to find it, and to top it off it was a hell of a lot better than Conqueror of Shamballa.

84. Can someone tell me why 10bit? Still no hardware can handle that. Instead of enjoing movie I can’t watch it because my GPU is not supporting it and 2 core CPU can’t handle that. Where’s the logic?

85. @Shade:
Because if your computer can’t do HD, don’t watch HD -.-
I’m pretty sure your dualcore can decode 10bit 720p just fine, since dualcores can decode 8bit 1080p as well (without GPU assistance).
And if everything else fail, just transcode the movie yourself. That’s what I did with every 8bit video I had on my PC: transcoded it into 10bit for my own pleasure. It took me only about 2 weeks to transcode 60GB worth of videos and now the videos only take about 35GB of space.

86. @Drano:
You mistook something. I have nvidia card in my computer and he can handle HD even Full HD(1080p). I’ve plenty of HD movies and watch them without a problem because GPU do the magic and CPU is not event loaded. But when it comes to 10bit magic goes off and CPU gets hard time. As most people I do not have huge tv, but 22″ monitor and I do not see any difference between 8bit and 10bit. I’m asking why people try to use newest codec which in 90% cases it will not work properly? In my case I have two choices. First watch FMA movie in shitty resolution in xvid or wait for 8bit, because 10bit freeze every second.

87. 10bit works in 100% of all cases. Saying it doesn’t because your hardware doesn’t support it, is like saying Crysis won’t work, because an 8086 CPU can’t handle it.
The reason why people try to use the newest codec, is the same as to why people want HD.
It’s new, it’s shiny and it’s better (HDTV wasn’t any better than SDTV before the first HD channels and Bluray/HD-DVD players got released either, you know?)
Time moves forward all the time. It never stops. What may sound obvious now, isn’t as obvious for most people, who wish for stability and constance.
Sometimes progress works, other times it doesn’t. How do we know, when it works and when not? How indeed, if we don’t try?
Did you know, that if people didn’t try to create higher resolution screens, “watch FMA movie in shitty resolution” would be your only choice today? Did you know, that if some insane people didn’t try to create new codecs, this 1080p release wouldn’t be 7GB big, but instead over 120GB?
You seem to be eager to get your movies in HD, yet you fail to realize, that high quality also requires high performance.
Also, you don’t have only 2 choices, you have 4.
1: Watch FMA in shitty resolution.
2: Wait for 8bit (which won’t happen).
3: Transcode the movie yourself.
4: Watch on Youtube or similar. If you’re lucky, it won’t be too shitty a resolution.

88. Drano:
I do not say new is bad. But forcing new code on people only because it will result file a 200mb lighter is unfair to people which does not have chance to see it in same resolution on hardware that is designed for it and do it without a problem. Tell me, do I need specially change my hardware because someone decided to encode in 10bit codec when GPU can really well handle 8bit and no one see a difference in quality? When drivers will support 10bit and GPU will take care of it I’m in, but right now it’s not the time.
You said ” high quality also requires high performance.” but Is this really that much of higher quality in 10bit instead in 8bit? IMO price is to high.
And yes I’ve 4 choices. And I will be blindly waiting for 8bit from other groups.

89. I understand your concern, but you need to see reality from other viewpoints too.
For the fansubbers, encoding in both 8bit and 10bit is very expensive (especially for a 90+ minutes movie).
Also, uploading files to the internet isn’t exactly a walk in the park, because uploading speeds are often much slower than downloading ones, so UTW (and other groups) try to reduce the size of their releases, thus the change to 10bit is a logical one (though maybe not the best one as of now).
Of course, groups could put some more effort into their work, assuming they get paid for it, which they don’t. Fansubbers aren’t exactly here for our enjoyment, they’re here because they want to. They don’t sub Anime so we can enjoy them, they sub Anime because they want to.
Since we don’t pay them for their work, we need to be a little bit more tolerant towards their choices. If they don’t want to release 8bit, we shouldn’t complain.
You’re free to complain though, but don’t expect your complaints to make any difference.

90. As you said, seeing from other viewpoints is important. I know, fansubbing is a hobby and one gets paid.(But do you get paid for your hobby) I’m really grateful that there are still people that sacrifice their time and effort so we can enjoy show. I think that fansubbers sometimes forgot that not every one can follow newest trends eg. codecs, and that newest does not necessary mean better, simply because it’s not ready for use yet. What about viewers? It’s simple. If you have problem with playing movie/series, you try somewhere else as I will do ๐Ÿ™‚
Drano: thanks for such log and constructive conversation. I wish, that your computer will last long without issues with playing your favorites shows, mine sadly is searching for other fansub groups where he can handle playing ๐Ÿ™‚

91. @Shade
arguing about 10bit now is useless and lame. u are just bitching for the sake of bitching.
my dual core E5300 can handle all of my 10bit 1080p video, like Hiryuu’s Dog Days and Whynot’s Steins;Gate

92. @martinez
To be honest, my 1.7GHz quadcore i7 doesn’t seem to work any more when playing a 1080p 10bit video, than when playing a 480p 8bit video.
But I’ve got a pretty interesting 4k clip (120MB for only 10 seconds of video) and all of my CPU’s core are busy trying to play that clip and they only manage to do ~23FPS out of 50, yet it seems like some people can play that clip at 50FPS on a Netbook with Intel Atom.
Long story short: Just because things work for you, it doesn’t necessarily work for others. The world is unfair like this…

93. Oops, I think I wrote something that could easily be misunderstood.
When I said “doesnโ€™t seem to work any more” I didn’t mean that my CPU failed. I meant “doesn’t get any more busy”

Just get a new CPU and stop bitching plz.
Also, u might as well see this shit movie on youtube, in fact, it may be the best choice

and this is what i got when i was playing [Whynot] Steins;Gate. Their OP scene was fucking bitrate whore…

and I believe that UTW won’t make video that so bitrate eater like this.
>Long story short: Just because things work for you, it doesnโ€™t necessarily work for others. The world is unfair like thisโ€ฆ
and i fully understand that it was my mistake for buying dual-core in the first place. But I really don’t wtf is wrong with ur i7. It should be powerful enough to play all kinds of 10bit videos, even 1080p ones. Kinds of funny that I’ve met many people that using i7, just like u, and they complaint that they couldn’t play 10-bit video.
so who’s the problem here?
The answer is simple. They don’t want to learn, and don’t want to listen to any kinds of tips. Faggots are faggots, after all.
I’m tired of this, but I’ll give some tips how to play it smoothly
1. There’s a nice guide
just make LAV Video Decoder as Prefer in MPC setting. go to View > Option > External Filter > Add Filter.
2. Go to . u can use mplayer2 as a standalone or add SMPlayer for GUI.
3. Use . It’s quite nice, but lack of ordered chapter feature and animation subtitle. But it works with 10-bit stuff.
For Linux, just download mplayer2 and smplayer. Guide is
.
and Mac, I don’t really care since I never use it :/
Still complain? Naahhh, I don’t give a fuck about that anymore.

Hey, UTW. I know this is the wrong page for that, but I need your help. How would you translate the anime title of the Hidan no Aria OVA? I’m sorry for disturbing you.

98. Typo at 00:58:01
“And Lucio was shot WENT he tried to climb the border cliffs.”
I hope you guys will patch this please?
Thanks for the work!! LOVE IT!!

99. @sharm
Um no we won’t be patching 1 typo, lol. It’s far too much effort for 1 minor typo. We’ll update it for the script in the repo though.

100. I LOVE YOU PEOPLE.

101. Still trying to milk money off this series huh? Well, like every other attempt at money milking that deviates from the original source, this movie is probably horrible anyways. And yet, people will still watch, buy, play them regardless.

102. crappy animation. Can’t believe this is from Bones. It looks like Flash animation at some parts.
Don’t waste your time.

103. I retracts my comment. It is a decent story, just bad animation. Still worth watching.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a blatant cash-in movie in my life; I mean, talk about QUALITY. For shame, Bones. I’ve come to expect so much more from you.
Still an enjoyable watch, though, and your subs are fantastic as always. Though it was kind of irritating that you subbed it as “Cleta” when the map at the beginning clearly labelled the country “Creta”…

“They want to you keep it.” -> They want you to keep it.
It sounds odd, QC moment failure?

106. Tryndake on May 1, 2012 at 10:23 am said:

Why did you translate Creta as Cleta? Apparently your hatred towards fma really screwed up the subs. Every minute or so they say something without any translation, pretty annoying. How hard is it to sub every sentence? When the song is playing a couple of minutes in you just want to smash your screen because the song subs aren’t displayed separately from what is being said. All in all a very mediocre subtitle job.

107. @TKDB
And the newspaper later on says Cleta, pick your poison.

108. @ Tryndake
Instead of using our subs on some second-party shit raw or something, try watching our release as-is. And if you’re already using our release as-is, try using a player that doesn’t suck. Maybe you won’t find our subtitle job to be as “mediocre” as you make it out to be.
And for the record, I simply followed what the video gave us when translating the names of people and towns. We may hate the movie, but we wouldn’t waste our time doing a shit job.
