I think it a good idea if you encode 480p version with CRF 25 setting, because many people who download 480p want to save some space, or have slow internet. So, why not make 480p as small as possible while keeping the quality acceptable ? From what I seen CRF 25 doesn’t look bad at all, and better than most web streaming website. In fact many people will probably not see any difference between a small 480p and your massive 480p
As for audio, I think you could also drop the size with little sacrifice in quality. Use AAC nero with Q=0.25 setting. Most people won’t even notice the difference, but at same time you will make the audio file much much smaller
In other words, you can easily make 480p much smaller (less than 100MB) with very small sacrifice in quality. People always have the option to download the massive 720p file if they want the best possible quality.

I find it funny that you’re attempting to teach _ar how to encode. if you want a tiny file, there’s plenty of re encoding groups out there who’ll be destroying the quality in order to minimize the file size, so don’t expect UTW to do that for you.

You sound like clueless kid who think larger size mean much better quality. I’m pretty sure that 90% of people can’t hear any difference between 128kb/s mp3 and 320kb/s mp3. Even if you have good ears the difference is going to be very small, and hard to spot the difference. 320kb/s mp3 is overkill and waste of space if you ask me.
Just like the case with mp3, there is very small difference in quality between the small size 480p video (if it is encoded with CRF 25 or 24 with High Profile settings) and the original 480p, but the size is going to way smaller (less than half ). If you can keep the quality 95% as good as the original, but cut the size by less than half, then that would be better in my opinion. If you care that much about quality why not just download 720p version ?
As for re encoding groups you are talking about. Keep in mind that many of these re encoding groups are very slow and take several days. Many of them only re encode at 720p (not 480p). Many of them use only horriblesubs. And many of them don’t use CRF 25, instead they used bith-rate method (like 50MB or 60MB for 480p) which sometimes results in very awful quality.
I’m sorry but you’re the clueless kid… If you’re blind enough (And deaf enough when it comes to MP3’s) to not see the difference, then great for you, enjoy saving hard drive space. But you’re missing the biggest issue – the 480p file is not there for people like you who want 80mb bit starved episodes which heavily sacrifice quality and viewing experience for file size. If you want that, then the only option you have is to go for the reencoding groups, you wont get any help here.
@SSunberg, I get the stuttering problem (audio is fine however) around the same time when Miyu is writing on the board. Skipping this part or disabling the subs, everything plays fine.
I’d say it is the styled translated text on the board that are most likely causing this (or our codecs are having issues with it).
I am using MPC-HC 1.7.1+madVR and other filters to play the 720p file. Testing it on VLC, there is no problem.

It is easy to claim that someone is deaf or blind. But it is hard to prove it with facts.
But here in this website with two audio mp3 clip. One is encoded at 128kb/s and other other is 320Kb/s. And people have to answer which one sound better without knowing which one is 128Kb/s or 320kb/s

After you vote, it will tell how many people voted for 128Kb/s and 320kb/s. You will be surprised that more people voted for 128kb/s than 320kb/s. Sound like most people guessed the wrong answer which means that people were having hard time to tell the difference between the two audio clip.

Not all people are super human with super hearing ability. Or maybe you have very high quality speakers that most people don’t have. You are just one person after all. Having the same problem as Ssunberg and Classic as well. The subtitles on the blackboard just spiked my PC.
Also @Smaller Size – as much as we are all humans, there’s quite a number of us who can listen at different audio ranges. And yeah, we can tell the difference. Which also means that I would actually go for good encoding quality.
I mean, that’s why we are here in UTW in the first place, right?

You’d really have to be deaf to not notice the difference between those samples when you’re allowed to play them back to back. For a very noticeable example, listen to the maraca in your left ear especially at around 0:06 — when it hits at the same time with the cymbal, it sounds really bad in the 128kbps sample whereas it doesn’t sound as bad in the 320kbps sample.

The issue isn’t the listeners or their ears, it’s the awful quality of the cheap audio equipment OEMs usually create. If you listen to music with crap audio equipment, even people with the best ears will think 128k and FLAC sound the same. With a decent pair of studio headphones (I’m talking about $200+ headphones, not overpriced crap like Beats by Dr. Dre or cheap earbuds/headsets), you will hear there is a major difference between 128k and 320k.
You may not be able to hear the difference, but others will.
On an unrelated note, please do NOT use MP3 for anything.
It’s a terrible, deprecated format that just refuses to die. Use Vorbis, AAC or Opus for your lossy codec needs as they all have much better quality:size ratio than MP3.

I think you don;t know re-encoding at all, since I’m one of them (still learning tho) I will try to open up your mind a bit
re-encoding actually uses the weakness of human eye’s of not able to locate the difference of moving frames since it gets in sequence
you may not be able to locate it, but I am able to distinguish it pretty clearly even when it played since I’m kind of accustomed to seeing both in HQ and re-encoded anime, as for the sound, I can hear some kind of broken sound for your sample so…. :v

anyway I don’t think anyone here will hear to your plea since UTW as long as I have known their existence is a fansub which consider quality more than size and I really hope it won;t change and stay that way, rather than our own local fansub which release anything in re-encoded state

Considering howmuch you have ganged upon the guy,you guys do realize he never told them to NOT go for best quality on the 720 release right? He merely suggested to go for size-saving in the inferior release since people who go for those are not expecting top quality to begin with.
If they did go with his siggestion none of the people whoactually ganged up on himwould loseat all because they all probably have the HD release anyway.

I can vouch for dropped frames with the chalkboard scene. 36 frames dropped. Nothing too noticeable though.

It happened the same to me despite -not- having a toaster but you’ll get responses like “update your specs, use XySubFilter” and shit.
I don’t really think a 5,5 MB mask was necessary for that part but you guys are better typesetters than me so you must know better.

Shitty masks where normal text would just do fine are apparently trendy. Much to my surprise, libass, unlike XySubFilter, plays that part just fine without any lags.

Subtitle renderers just utilize just a single CPU core, and since you’ve probably more than one, it is no surprise that you don’t see 100% CPU usage.
I got the spike at the chalkboard scene too while using KCP between 25-35 frames dropped, it flucuates, not really a problem tho wasnt at a particularily important part of the scene. Just want Miyu and Ilya looking perfect. 😉 Keep up the good work as always tho.
