Surprise double release for today! Here’s Carnival Phantasm episode 12 and the mini OVA included in the third volume, Fate/Prototype, for your enjoyment. This brings us to the end of the Carnival Phantasm project!
It’s been a long but very fulfilling ride through the three volumes of this series. Quite possibly the best gag parody series I’ve ever seen, I enjoyed watching every minute of it, and it has been so much pleasure to share this wonderful series with you all. It’s always sad to see a good series end, but that’s what makes the experience all the more valuable. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
I suppose it was pretty interesting to watch this small Fate/Prototype digest and see how the concepts in it eventually matured to those present in the Fate/Stay Night game. The middle section, put simply, was a TL nightmare, replete with contextless Nasu(TM) dialogue all overlapping one another (up to four voices talking simultaneously). After some analysis, thought, and mix-and-matching, I’m hopeful I did the translations justice.
And… the curtain call!
Raze (TypeMoon Fag/Translator/Editor/QC):
It’s always a challenge to translate comedy so that the jokes come through in English, but this series took it to the next level by parodying the massive TypeMoon universe (meaning I really needed to do my homework), as well as making references everywhere to all sorts of series and movies, which meant each line had to be approached with extreme care. I gave each episode everything I had because they deserved nothing less, and I’m very, very glad all of you seemed to enjoy the end result a great deal.
I really have to give it to my friend ar here for the insane quality of his typesetting. His signs made my jaw drop in awe many, many times in the course of working on this series, and it all came from hours and hours of hard work and an insistence on perfection. Thanks also go to the other staff who gladly chipped in their free time to make these subs possible. And of course, my deepest appreciation goes to Eri Takenashi and the geniuses at Lerche labs for coming up with these jokes. Rarely have I laughed so hard in my life!
ar (Typesetter/Encoder):
Where to begin… This project was a hell of a lot of fun and each episode made me laugh continuously, with some being particularly funnier than others, but all of them were great as a whole. Everytime a new volume (Season) came out I knew it would be hell to work on, but completing each episode felt great. I knew that after all the hours of typesetting, being able to sit down and enjoy the episode would be bliss, and that it definitely was. My knowledge of the Nasuverse is fair I suppose, there’s a lot I don’t know and a lot that I’d love to know, and it seems like watching each of episode of this and then hassling Raze with questions paid off, as well as looking things up myself where I could. All in all, I would estimate a good ~250-300 hours were spent on typesetting this gem, which was practically all my free time whenever we were working on another season, but I had a blast working with Raze and the others on this, so it was time well spent. And while I was definitely burnt out after each episode, I would probably still do it again. Lerche did a wonderful job animating Carnival Phantasm for a new Studio, and I hope they continue to produce more high quality work in the future with more of this great typography work they’ve so far displayed. My hat goes off to them and to my bros who I spent hours working with on this series.
Kusion (Timer):
Carnival Phantasm has been the most fun I’ve had timing a series in a very long time, and I’m glad that I was able to work on it. Every episode was filled with laughs, and it was also hilarious to watch Bob64 and __ar work for hours on the whiteboard of doom (now with much more “doom” than iDOLM@STER’s!) Hope you all enjoyed the ride!
Thanks also go to Bob64 and fnord for assisting with the typesetting, Moshi for his very valuable input, and fgghjjkll for filling in for the timing of ep9.
Please enjoy the final episode of this incredible series, and thank you for flying UTW! A batch will hopefully be released sometime soon.
