Surprise double release for today! Here’s Carnival Phantasm episode 12 and the mini OVA included in the third volume, Fate/Prototype, for your enjoyment. This brings us to the end of the Carnival Phantasm project!
It’s been a long but very fulfilling ride through the three volumes of this series. Quite possibly the best gag parody series I’ve ever seen, I enjoyed watching every minute of it, and it has been so much pleasure to share this wonderful series with you all. It’s always sad to see a good series end, but that’s what makes the experience all the more valuable. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
I suppose it was pretty interesting to watch this small Fate/Prototype digest and see how the concepts in it eventually matured to those present in the Fate/Stay Night game. The middle section, put simply, was a TL nightmare, replete with contextless Nasu(TM) dialogue all overlapping one another (up to four voices talking simultaneously). After some analysis, thought, and mix-and-matching, I’m hopeful I did the translations justice.
And… the curtain call!
Raze (TypeMoon Fag/Translator/Editor/QC):
It’s always a challenge to translate comedy so that the jokes come through in English, but this series took it to the next level by parodying the massive TypeMoon universe (meaning I really needed to do my homework), as well as making references everywhere to all sorts of series and movies, which meant each line had to be approached with extreme care. I gave each episode everything I had because they deserved nothing less, and I’m very, very glad all of you seemed to enjoy the end result a great deal.
I really have to give it to my friend ar here for the insane quality of his typesetting. His signs made my jaw drop in awe many, many times in the course of working on this series, and it all came from hours and hours of hard work and an insistence on perfection. Thanks also go to the other staff who gladly chipped in their free time to make these subs possible. And of course, my deepest appreciation goes to Eri Takenashi and the geniuses at Lerche labs for coming up with these jokes. Rarely have I laughed so hard in my life!
ar (Typesetter/Encoder):
Where to begin… This project was a hell of a lot of fun and each episode made me laugh continuously, with some being particularly funnier than others, but all of them were great as a whole. Everytime a new volume (Season) came out I knew it would be hell to work on, but completing each episode felt great. I knew that after all the hours of typesetting, being able to sit down and enjoy the episode would be bliss, and that it definitely was. My knowledge of the Nasuverse is fair I suppose, there’s a lot I don’t know and a lot that I’d love to know, and it seems like watching each of episode of this and then hassling Raze with questions paid off, as well as looking things up myself where I could. All in all, I would estimate a good ~250-300 hours were spent on typesetting this gem, which was practically all my free time whenever we were working on another season, but I had a blast working with Raze and the others on this, so it was time well spent. And while I was definitely burnt out after each episode, I would probably still do it again. Lerche did a wonderful job animating Carnival Phantasm for a new Studio, and I hope they continue to produce more high quality work in the future with more of this great typography work they’ve so far displayed. My hat goes off to them and to my bros who I spent hours working with on this series.
Kusion (Timer):
Carnival Phantasm has been the most fun I’ve had timing a series in a very long time, and I’m glad that I was able to work on it. Every episode was filled with laughs, and it was also hilarious to watch Bob64 and __ar work for hours on the whiteboard of doom (now with much more “doom” than iDOLM@STER’s!) Hope you all enjoyed the ride!
Thanks also go to Bob64 and fnord for assisting with the typesetting, Moshi for his very valuable input, and fgghjjkll for filling in for the timing of ep9.
Please enjoy the final episode of this incredible series, and thank you for flying UTW! A batch will hopefully be released sometime soon.

2. Hell, too bad America’s started to become more like the Arabian Emirates with their strike towards Internet censorship. I liked fileserve and filesonic better.

23. @DmonHiro
That “special” isn’t a special, it’s just Akiha talking about episode 2 which we’ve already translated and released, it’s basically an ad of sorts. So we won’t be doing it, sorry.

24. “A batch will hopefully be released sometime soon.”
Will there be some changes in the Batch (Subtitles or anything else) ?
IΒ΄m asking because I want to copy the files to a DVD.
If there a changes in the Batch, I will wait untill itΒ΄s released, if there a no changes, I can burn the DVD now.

25. D’oh, you guys released Fate/Prototype!
Lol… my group’s been a bit slow lately, didn’t get to it yet. And yeah, looked like a TS/TL nightmare (the overlapping voices, and those screens-o-text twice…).
Thanks for the (always) awesome work.

26. Thanks for all your work, this series is amazing.

64. When I first saw Lancer I thought “Kamina? In the Grail War? Oh yeah!”

65. Awesome work as always; thank you so much : )
May I ask a question…in the final Tiger Dojo, the sign in the back has been translated as ‘Kerala Bhavan’…may I ask what that refers to, only I find it unlikely that it’s in homage of a local indian restaurant in my area XD

66. @Eru
The sign says: ケララバワン => http://www.keralabhavan.com/ . It could be some kind of Ciel reference, we have no idea though to be honest. It’s really random, but that’s all that we turned up for it.

@GM: In case you were also wondering “hmm, Type-Venus, doesn’t that sound awfully similar to Type-Moon?” that’s because the name of the company, Type-Moon, is another way used to refer to the father of all vampires, Brunestud of the Crimson Moon. The Types are beings originally created in one of Kinoko Nasu’s earliest stories, Notes.

and the commentary: http://www.mediafire.com/#zz3bofj3wbjh8

85. First off: THANK YOU. For subbing and releasing this series. This is something I suspect will never see an official English release, due mainly to cost vs. profit considerations. So I’m extremely happy to have had the opportunity to watch this.
Second: I’ll have to agree. This series really is the funniest gag series I’ve seen in… well, I honestly can’t remember. It usually took me a good half-hour to watch each new episode simply because I was laughing too hard to continue! And even after multiple re-watches, I still find myself laughing quite loudly.
I’m really going to miss this crazy carnival. Maybe someday they’ll feel inspired to revisit it. After all, they still have the 4th Grail War to cover… πŸ˜‰

104. Kinny Riddle on January 25, 2012 at 2:50 pm said:

Fate Prototype: Now that has to be the most epic concept animation I’ve ever seen. According to the Type-Moon wikia, the eventual genderswap was supposed to appeal to the perceived male-dominated otaku fanbase. But with the Fate series now being so popular, perhaps Type-Moon should seriously consider making a one-off “reverse harem” version of the 5th Holy Grail War someday. (Though Type-Moon might probably want to reconsider the stellar A-listed seiyuu cast used here, or they’ll go bankrupt very soon. lol )
I see where many of the original story elements in the final product came from, mainly Archer was supposed to be Gilgamesh all along, but then the genderswap enabled Nasu to envision a badass future version of Shiro as Archer, and so Gil got shafted as the 8th Servant instead.
The ending sequence with Ayaka’s yandere older sister Manaka laughing maniacally about being reunited with her knight Saber suggests Kiritsugu and Irisviel were borne from this character. Her yandere-ness must be where Urobuchi Gen got his inspiration for the “tainted Irisviel” at the climax of Fate Zero, while her status as Saber’s “previous Master” were given to Kiritsugu instead.
But I’d much prefer the present version of Kirei compared to Sancraid Phahn, his counterpart in this version. Both are creepy psychopaths but in different ways, Kirei is creepy but still badass, whereas Sancraid comes across as just plain “gay”. πŸ™‚
BTW, for the Carnival Phantasm last episode, love the cameo by Fate Zero, F/HA and Kara no Kyoukai characters as well. (Pity that Ryougi Shiki has been confined to the kitchen, though it probably suits her broody personality) Perhaps they ought to do a CP centred around FZ and KnK next time.

105. Kinny Riddle on January 25, 2012 at 3:07 pm said:

Oh as for the CP episode itself, I’m just glad they managed to submit to the will of the “Twitter electorate” and go for the harem route, man that just cracked me up.
Is it me or is Sakura actually quite creepily evil this episode? Despite Shiro’s precautions in trying to date all girls at once, she can be seen everywhere if you observe carefully.
This is especially true in the cinema scene, at first I thought Shiro was making a great risk watching the same movie with Rin and Sakura at different rows. But it turns out Shiro booked another movie to watch with her, meaning Sakura actually knew what Shiro was up to, but decided to continue with the facade instead for reasons only known to herself. πŸ™‚

Clearly Sakura is a massive troll. Not to mention her stalker behaviour was hilarious.

Seriously this series is fantastic, and as everyone has already said, thank you so much for translating it guys πŸ™‚
There’s only one little problem and I’m pretty sure it’s something on my end but for some reason the fate/prototype keeps showing up as just a blank green screen, I can hear the sounds but no picture. I’ve had the same problem with a couple other shows I downloaded from other sources have the same problem. (I’m using vlc media player) any help would be fantastic!

108. It’s over… I can’t believe it the carnalval is over……. just a few final words
Season Four! Season Four!
Thank you UTW for your excelent work on this series, you’re the best!

Fate/Prototype was actually getting me interested. I couldn’t keep up with the pace of it all, though. I think Saber could have talked more, but the girl just didn’t keep me interested enough.
R.I.P Carnival Phantasβ€” SEASON FOUUUUURRR!!!!!

Is it just me, or does Fate/Prototype have this Final Fantasy vibe in it?
Anyway, SEASON 4! SEASON 4!

113. it as all epic^^ however did anyone else notice how proto-saber is just like.. well.. the love child of saber and gil? xD

114. @Kit-Tsukasa
No we won’t. It’s a damn commercial about episode 2.

All the Carnival’s worked fine, but for some reason Prototype’s video is all messed up.
I don’t believe it is anything on my end, and it happened on both the 1080 and th 720.
Is anyone else having these issues?

116. @Ryu
You need to update your codecs to support 10-bit playback for Prototype.

117. Ryu Infiniti on January 29, 2012 at 10:54 pm said:

Definitely not my codecs I have the latest CCCP, but thanks for trying to help. I watch way to many shows for my own good, but something about Prototypes vid just wont work right.
I wonder if someone messed with my settings or installed something else that is interfering with certain codecs. Guess I got to go diving through my settings and files…. -_-
Anyways, Thanks again.

Thanks a bunch to all the staffs who worked [really hard] on the Carnival Phantasm series ’till the end!
@Ryu Infiniti
You’re not the only one having those problems. Other than having “noise” or glitches [i dunno what to call it], it only shows as a green screen in VLC. I hope anyone could help me with these ‘cuz I’m no expert in the fields of computer and programs T^T

120. @ffure21
If you are using VLC, you need to update to one of these builds to play back 10-bit.

I use ZoomPlayer
Managed to get it to work, my settings were really messed up. Dunno who messed with it, but I am going to kick their ass once i find out.

122. Not sure if this was asked but for the batch will there be any changes to prototype, ex season, or Ilya’s castle? If not I’m just going to grab those right away.

123. Shiki has it much tougher than Shirou. Shirou only has 3 girls to worry about while Shiki has a bagillion bitches after him, half of them are insane in their own way, the other half are just plain bat shit insane. The Nanaya-gland is both a blessing and a curse.
Anyways, V/V!!! I never thought I would ever get to actually see her on screen.
And of course: SEASON 4! SEASON 4!
