So, after Moshi fell asleep while translating Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon (or whatever happened to him), we dropped the project and picked this up when he came back a few hours later. It’s a pretty cute series, and we had fun working on it. This will be our second project at UTW. Look forward to some fun times (and an earlier release next week)!
Note: This release uses ordered chapters to have the OP as a separate file, which is then seamlessly linked into the episode. Why? The reason is twofold: For one, the OP is a huge bitrate hog. If it was included in the episode 1 file, it’d take a whopping 25% of the entire filesize. And remember that this is just the opening that we are talking about: 90 seconds of content. Time-wise it’s only 6,3% of the episode runtime. The second reason is that the OP looks terrible in the TV broadcast. Due to the excessive filtering required to make it look at least somewhat less terrible, it takes a damn long time to encode the thing. So in other words, future episode encodes would slow down considerably if the OP was included every single time. Thank you for your understanding, and have a nice day!
Clarification Edit: I would normally never use ordered chapters for TV releases, but the huge filesize of the OP and the excessive encoding requirements makes this a very special case.
Oh, and this release is obviously 10-bit, too. Just in case you didn’t get the message about every new show being encoded in 10-bit.

[spoiler]Oh man. OH MAN. DOES HORIZON SUCK. Like, man. This plot—no, no, wait, I’m getting a Null Pointer Exception. Oh that’s right, THERE IS NO COW LEVEL PLOT. I mean seriously, this show is devoid of any comprehensible storyline until the last minute, and even then it’s impossible to figure out how the past 23 minutes (which consisted of a teacher running away from her {(I.S. + Nanoha) / 2}-like spellcaster-mecha students, beating them up, beating some demon gangsta dude up, then beating the crap out of the main character (who also happens to be the main character of seitokai no ichizon) while some old man and a secretary watch) are remotely related to the explanation just given, save the random “Holy Calendar Year X” things that pop up. Oh right, and I still don’t really understand where they got their uber mecha-tech from or how it works. I mean the archer girl had some shrine maiden chibi mascot go fetch her buffs for her shots via teh intarwebz in exchange for working part-time shifts there and bribing the chibi with cake or something.
Now okay, you might be telling me to go look at a plot summary or something related so I get it. And yeah, there is some stuff on YouTube like this “let us explain some of the jargon you’ll be hearing” video. (in Japanese, text only. If you don’t get it, take a look.) It helped. Like, a lot. But you see, even if I now get it and make an epic TL of this thing and we all somehow get this to the point of release, now you, the audience, will go through the exact same procedure of total and utter cranial chaos. You won’t get who they’re talking about. You won’t understand if something is a meme, a name (or nickname), a landmark, an idea pertaining to the series, or something else entirely. Oh, and you’ll feel like you’re watching from around episode 5, when people who watch from the beginning are starting to get used to the world and people who’ve never watched it become quite confused. No sir, this is episode 1.
Now interestingly enough, there is an Introduction and Prologue section on the official site, the intro talking about the original writer etc. and the prologue equivalent to the last minute of ep1. Not useful. Oh look, there’s also a Story section, how convenie—

I would really like to enjoy it, but since you guys have never subbed a good anime(as proven by your decision to pick up yet another Shana clone instead) that would have been impossible if you stuck with it. I greatly appreciate your continued efforts in letting me know what shows I should never watch.

Please pick up Horizon, you’re blowing it off before even giving it a chance. The battles get really epic later on and there are politics and all kinds of social issues introduced. The first ep of Horizon didn’t even cover the entire prologue of volumes one. Please don’t drop it just because it’s a challenge to translate and you didn’t like the beginning (not even really the beginning, more like a preamble to the beginning). I think it would be better to meet the challenge, and it doesn’t seem like anyone else is going to sub it. Please, please pick it back up.
10bit I can live with, but order chapters are a pain in the ass. If you do any re-muxing, it’s very annoying.

My computer can handle 1080P blu-ray rips but it can’t handle 10bit 720p? I have all the up-to-date software and hardware that can play Blu-ray rips and Fallout:NV.
When I play C3 I get a distorted screen with blocks lettering the screen.
But this is not oversubbed, though it would be really nice if UTW would pick up Horizon because HorribleSubs isn’t reliable when it comes to ripping Sentai… (wishful thinking)

We don’t apply “shitty” filters around here – the filtering that was done for the OP was very elaborate, all in effort to make it look better while avoiding doing any further damage to it. The result, while not perfect, is still considerably better than what it looked like originally in the Transport Stream.
And the OP was filtered completely separately from the rest of the episode, which received much lighter filtering (since the actual episode looked for the most part very nice in the Transport Stream).

who else subs horizon? i would always give an anime at least three eps, but i can understand you must be ppicky sicne your having lots of work with it. though there are many examples of animes that are nice but have awful first episodes, like dance in the vampire bund (okay, given its still nto anywhere near as good as the manga and the end got fuvked up with original stuff to.. but the stuff taht was manga-faithful, episode and stuff, were quite nice.)

more 10 bit garbage in shitty encode
i downloaded the 720p episode and when it finished downloading, the folder it was in is slow everytime i try to access the folder. i had to end process and delete the video and the folder became normal again. it took a long time to delete the file because it made my entire computer slow. i download the episode again and the exact same thing happens…. my entire computer became sooooo slow for some reason

A) you are not subbing show X / subbing show Y
B) you should be subbing show X instead of show Y
C) some other group is already subbing that show
D) No other group is subbing that show – so by default you have to do it because I’m telling you and you have to listen to me.
E) You are not using the font etc… I like
F) Why can’t you be more like group X or less like group Y
G) Since my computer sucks/ is old I can’t watch the show in that format so no one else should either – sub it in an outdated format just for me because I am more important than maintaining the best quality available.
H) I have a good/ new computer but am too stupid/ lazy to learn how to use it or download the proper stuff to play the show; so see G)
I) I like to get free stuff (other people have graciously taken the time out of their busy lives to sub for me) then spend all my time pointlessly bitching about it.

Is it just me, or does anything I do with the file seem to freeze my windows explorer? It won’t let me move the file, nor will it let me rename it, hell it won’t even let me delete it and unlocker also crashes then I use that.

Moshi what the fuck are you talking about? Nothing in that episode should have been difficult to translate, at all, besides some German used by the fairies. Even the ending monolgue wasn’t difficult to translate, just translate the fucking words. There were no difficult terms like you were trying to make it seem. As for the story, this episode only covered a part of the prologue of vol 1, the story hasn’t even been touched on yet. If you’re going to drop something, give the real reason why you did it:
“The word count was high and I didn’t like the fact that I didn’t know everything about the story before going in, so I dropped it”.

I do have to say though, the internet as a whole has constantly baffled me with how stupid some individuals are. A quick Google search with the query “10bit codec playback” netted over 2 pages of results with relevant information. Hell, you could simply just go through the Fate/Zero comments and see people commenting on ways to get the playback fully functional. Even after 6 years, I still remember what my USMC drill sergeant told me: “if you don’t make an effort to help yourself, why should you expect others to help you?”

It’s not the case that some “people” cannot play 10bit (I certainly can), but some “people” would like to know how to convert this 10bit to a more universally compatible 8bit format (Hardware players, etc). No one thus far has been willing (or able) to provide a solution to this issue. Me personally, if I would get some decent direction on how to convert 10bit, no more bitching would be heard from this particular individual.
Just finished this ep and I am glad that you guys picked up this show. I don’t really know much about the show that you guys dropped other than it looks visually pleasing. But yeah, good job and keep up the good work 😀

I completely agree with you. The people who are up in arms about the whole 10bit thing evidently don’t know their assholes from their foreheads. Hell, before I even tried watching one of the shows that UTW released this season (fate/zero), I read their post about how they’re gonna be using 10bit encodes now and that an update to your codecs will probably be needed to avoid any bad visual happenings. It worked splendidly, and I’m really not running a high tech laptop (I’m using a dell studio 15 laptop. dual core 2 ghz processor, 3gb ram, 300gb hdd, crappy intel mobile series 4 express graphics chip).
10 bit bites alot of ppl want the original muxed with sub not 8bit rencodes to 10bit, lets get technical 10bit conversion allows for b frames which actualy deletes the original so these releases are not how they where intended to be seen from production to end user. admit it if you had a raw that was 10bit source your playback issues would not be a problem. Don’t believe what your being told from UTW,Commie and gg. they just got cheap on us there is no quality here any more….
Some 10-bit encodes (like this one) still play fine with 8-bit codecs, on a good enough system. There is some minor blocking, but that’s it.
I agree that going all-or-nothing 10-bit isn’t the way to go just yet, it’s just going to alienate fans who will download 8-bit releases from other groups instead. XviD as a compatibility release sounds good though, and take care of the entire non-Hi10p crowd and those with older systems. But H.264 720p with DXVA is still where it’s at.
Even with the proper codecs my computer still can’t run 10bit at any acceptable frame rate. That’s fine. I can accept the fact that my computer can’t handle the quality. I’ll just go watch it in SD then. Wait…

Basically, you will have to downloaded the op and/or ed just once, and put it together with the episodes you download, the episodes you download will come without ed and op, but when you play the file you will see the op and ed. This is made to economize bandwidth, since the ep come withou op so the file size is small

Had a bit of trouble with the ordered chapters at first. Apparently the LAV Splitter doesn’t support ordered chapters yet (which I did not know). Problem solved by switching back to Haali.
No problems with the Hi10p part. Keep up the good work.
I’m going to try a bunch of different decoders/codec packs/whatever I can find to see if one of them can actually play these 10bit shits without melting my CPU (AKA not lagging). If I fail, Daiz, you’ll be getting a letter-bomb delivered by a black dude cosplaying as mugi who will hug you untill you explode into tiny non-recyclable bits. Thanks for subbing this show, and sounds like a legit reason if the OP takes that much of every episode.
A question though, since the OP should go before part A in the episode, how can you redirect it to play the OP after playing trough the first part of the ordered chapters? Never got this to work so that’s why I usually prefer to have the OP/ED in the episodes, some shows in particular looks bad without the OP in the right place, like Darker Than Black for instance.
The IQ-level of some people around here is apparently not that high.
If they don’t like the show, they don’t sub it. That’s a privilege every translator has. I tl vn’s myself and it’s kind of obvious that I won’t work my ass off for a game I don’t like. They are the one’s who put their freetime into this, without gaining anything in return, not you.

I’ve had no problems running 10bit on my system (as long as I didn’t use WMP), but every time I went into the C3 folder my PC hung up while it tried to get the thumbnail and the CPU went to 100%. Not good. I went to folder options and turned off thumbnails and no problem. Which is good. It means I don’t have any thumbnails for mkv files, but at least it works.

Err, how do i get the ordered chapter thing to work? i can play the files separately (though im kinda guessing that ordered chapters means that the files play together i.e. the OP will play in between the episode itself[i presume]) I’m using mpc-hc with the latest CCCP pack(with Haali Media splitter turned off due to explorer issues) any ideas? or is Haali Media splitter required? or am i going wrong elsewhere? basically, i have no idea how to execute these ind of files in the first place 🙁

Just turned on Haali. the explorer issues were due to Haali trying to create thumbnail pics for the files, which used to crash explorer at times for certain files(for me, it was my Sekirei and The World God only knows archives).
either ways, just turned on Haali, the previous thumbnail error aint there no more, so im happy…though i tried playing the file after turning on Haali, its still the same, i played through it, the OP didnt play with it(they’re in the same folder), and the total time is still stating 23:40 rather than 25:10(assuming it acually calculates total time)
what do i do now?
.. I fixed the codec stuff. Now I donwloaded just the episode, without selecting the op (who cares about this op anyways?) and the subtittles are all off or not showing up..

Lol, I can play the file, but I’m getting the explorer issues. More specifically, I’m getting the massive CPU-drain, undeletable file error. The funny thing is; I can open the files, but not delete them. I’m going to safe mode, delete, and re-dl to see if it was just that instance.

It’s the windows explorer trying to extract thumbnails from the video. With 8bit and no “header-stripping” muxing setting, it’s fine. But with 10bit and/or header-stripping muxing setting, everytime you clicked on the file, your explorer will always behave like that. Mine’s too (because I installed divx codecs to show thumbnails for mkv), but then I realized I just downloaded 7.5GB of mkv with header stripping muxing setting, and I uninstalled divx codec, and now everything’s fine although I don’t have the thumbnails for mkv anymore.
Anyway, just open folder option, click on the “views” tab, and checked “Always show icon, never thumbnails” should do the trick for you. Or, Turn off the thumbnail extraction from Haali Media Splitter settings.

about horizon, yes is just ep 1 and it will probably turn in a good show, but also true i wasn’t able tu understand nothing whitout going to read the first LN summary….
About “Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon” you dropped it too fast… the first episode was slow paced, lots of talking and no plot but if you had watched it until the end you would have understand that it is an INTRODUCTORY episode… in order to drop a series one should at least watch 2 episodes (read the synopsis of 2 episodes).

I’m not as happy with external ordered chapters, not implemented in VLC and it makes it harder to watch while downloading even if it was implemented. Well, I’m not going to change to MPC because of that anyway so I guess I just have to live with it.
I like the how the animation is done in this show, I think it looks great. (Except for the compression artifacts…) If they keep it void of plot and action this might be an okay watch I guess, the preview didn’t look promising though…
Please STOP encoding with 10bit! It breaks DXVA playback. It breaks network streamer playback (WDTV Live). It breaks phone playback. There’s all these downfalls and no real benefit. Slightly smaller files means nothing in today’s multi-terrabyte storage solutions. Yes, I can play 10bit video files on my PC but you literally broke playback on everything else and it’s just ludicrous to do it. Other groups jumped blindly on the 10bit bandwagon without putting forth any thought as to what this would do and here UTW, in some dimwitted desire to make sure their “e-penis” measures up, blindly followed suit.

For everyone who said Horizon drop was bad:
If I were just watching the thing, all I would do is say “wtf” and wait till next week to figure out what the jargon of ep1 meant. Now, if I were just watching the thing, I also wouldn’t be making a blog post here. The main issue with this way of thinking is that it doesn’t apply correctly to a TL’s job. I need to KNOW what’s being said, understand what it means + what it’s implying, and try to turn that into useful English for you guys to read. When I just start watching the thing 5 minutes in because it’s too much effort to even guesslate(guesslating is bad enough already), I know I’m only going to bust out a terribad script and annoy a ton of people. Including you guys.
Conclusion: if you don’t care if our subs of horizon would have been utter fail-in-a-mkv, go watch a raw; it’s the same thing since the subs wouldn’t help anyway. If you do, then know that you would have raged. Hard. It’s better for both of us that I don’t TL Horizon.
And as far as I’ve heard, Raze and 8thsin both think the show sucks too. So no, we aren’t going to retry it.

You definitely need an upgrade if you can’t play 10bit (either that, or you’re doing it wrong).
hmm it doesn´t really work with VLC player <.< i´m glad i have 2 different players on my pc but vlc is definitly better… and there isn´t a update for VLC player either…

Every other solution I have tried results in blocky/crappy video or incompatibility with ordered chapters etc. Follow the Coalgirls guide to the letter – and you should be able to continue playing anime on your crappy laptop for another couple years.
@Chido: the VLC nightlies support 10-bit, just download and install untill you have a working one (a lot of them aren’t stable and don’t play), use that untill vlc 12 comes out

There’s nothing wrong with ordered chapters except for the fact that they break compatibility on plastic toys, but that isn’t much of a problem because 10bit already does that.
well time to build a new PC, my 8 shader core gpu in my crap top can’t handle this shit. lucky i have a back log of anime, ges ill just batch this hole season and watch it later. like every fansub group seems to be using 10-bit. but i do have a big as back log on my 1TB HHD so no biggy, and i am plaing on having a gtx 560 ti next week, but fuck if that wont play this….. ….. ill just re-encoded my self herp a derp im biulding and editing/gaming pc soooo ¯\(º o)/¯
On a Mac, the latest version of VLC won’t play the video at all, it just plays the sound with a green screen. VLC 1.1.9 will play, but gets the weird artifacts other people were talking about, doesn’t support ordered chapters, and loops back near the beginning of the video in 2 places. MPlayer is the same as VLC 1.1.9, minus the looping problem. I couldn’t even get MPlayer2 to launch, and I really don’t want to download the source and recompile it on the off chance it might work. I can live with watching the SD release or dealing with the artifacts, and I realize that if no one is using 10 bit video none of the players will bother with supporting it, but there really is no good way to watch this in HD on a Mac(I don’t consider unstable builds of VLC 1.2 “good”), and most people don’t have the money to just go out and buy a new computer whenever they find their current one isn’t perfect.
So much garbage shows this season;/ Fate zero+shana is all i hope for atm..

1. Download MPlayer OSX Extended.
2. Download mac mplayer2 binary from http://code.google.com/p/mplayerosx-builds/downloads/list
3. Unzip binary, double click unzipped file. MPlayer OSX+ should ask if you want to use this binary, tell it you do.

It mainly depends on GPU (I played a 9~10 Mbps bitrate movie @ 1080p 10-bit flawlessly on a cheapest GPU card nowadays, ATI HD 4650 128 bit 1GB DDR2 RAM using madVR), So if you have a ancient PC like P4 with a PCI-E slot then grab a similar model (or, which has at least have a 128 MB dedicated RAM and supports Shader Model 3.0, and install Direct X 9.0c) you are good to go! 😀
@jurgah: Currently there is no officially released version of VLC that supports 10 bit video. In my experience, the green screen only occurs in VLC 1.1.11 and 1.1.12. VLC 1.1.9 will play the video, but the colors will be slightly distorted throughout most of the video. There have been suggestions such as using mplayer2 or nightly builds of VLC 1.2 that you could try, maybe they’ll work better for you than they did for me. Failing there, I think VLC 1.2 is supposed to be officially released in a few weeks, and that’s supposed to support 10 bit video, so with any luck it will only be an issue for the next 2 or 3 episodes. In the meantime, the 10 bit is quite watchable in VLC 1.1.9 and regular MPlayer as long as you aren’t overly picky, and the SD release should also be fine for a few episodes.
