Thanks for waiting!  UTW, Underwater and I, your guest translator, are proud to present to you THE iDOLM@STER.  New and improved, now with no giant robots! Our glorious, unified tag, [Chibiki], is a simple amalgam of three of our favorite idols: Chihaya, Hibiki and Miki (ordered to make the name sound good – Miki rules all our hearts!).

If you’ve been following Kusion’s storm of iM@S vids for the past several months, you know what’s coming. Singing, dancing, and a greater variety of idols than you can shake a stick at. While we’ve all been apprehensive as to the quality of A-1 Productions’ work, I personally think it’s safe to say that this is one of the finer releases this season. Viewers of NicoNico rated it #1 out of everything that came out!

Big thanks go to Kusion, the other leader of this project and wrangler of the Whiteboard of Doom (you’ll see), Daiz for working all day with us while sick, Raze for guiding us along all the while, and __ar for words of wisdom and magic fixes along the way.  Next week we’ll be even faster, now that we have everything in line and the team worked out!

As an added bonus! Daiz has prepared a sub track 2 for viewers who prefer their subs with as little untranslated Japanese as possible. Track 1 will be UTW style with common terms and titles included.

Enjoy the music, enjoy the surprises, enjoy the ride.  We’re looking forward to experiencing The iDOLM@STER with you!

  1. I actually have no clue at all what this is but I’m going to give it a try. It might surprise me.

  2. But… but… but… “Chibiki” could also be interpreted as an amalgamation of just Chihaya and Hibiki!

  3. Wow. You guys really put so much effort on this release, especially by making 2 subtitles tracks. Thank you guys, really appreciate this.

  4. Yeah.. the “Diaz” mistake I used to make….
Guys, you all rock. This realease is superb. Thank you.

  5. Someone cares to give an comparison/example between sub track #1 and #2? Does track #1 lack any honorifics? Though the usual “UTW style” normally has them and is already pretty weabooish.

  6. Oh ok, my bad. I misunderstood the difference between those two sub tracks. Track #2 has no honorifics, though I have to wonder about the need, especially when it comes to an “otaku show” where mostly those who know about all that stuff, will watch.

  7. @Weskalia
No, there won’t be. There is a 480p mkv instead, which I guess doesn’t help if you want to play it on a device that doesn’t support mkv but that’s the encoders choice of SD format.
    @boingman
Track 1 is honorificified and has jap food names. Track 2 is un-honorificified and has english tl’d food names. lol I think thats the only diff.

  8. The so rumoured anime about idols. Giving this a try specifically because of the fact UTW picked it. (And so far, I’ve yet to be disappointed by anything they pick.)
I don’t understand the game at all, let’s hope this sheds some light into things.

  9. Thanks for the episode and the subs xD.
I dont know why i have high hopes for this series oh wait, i know, is because all you tube videos, doujins that i had seen xD.
Well let’s watch this and see how good it is and thanks again

  10. Decided to pick this up, although I’m a complete stranger to iDOLM@STER universe (tl;dr blogs helped a bit in that regard)
A small remark regarding the typesetting (or whatsitcalled): I can barely read the names of the girls @signs -.-.

  11. Player^Angel: You can blame the A-1 Pictures for that – the English names are part of the original video and not something added by us. We would’ve made them bigger if they hadn’t been typeset into the video already.

  12. I hoped that iM@S will be nice-brainless-moe-show, but actually this is serious crap. Seriously, I can’t imagine what Kusion sees in it. 🙁

  13. >Track 1 will be UTW style
I hope that’s the unlocalized track because the group UTW that I know and love dislike localizing/Americanization, as they should!

  14. Awesome guys! This is probably going to be the next K-ON! and I’m looking forward for more. I hope there isn’t too much giant robots stuff.

  15. Hmm. Interesting, but I hope the whole show isn’t done in POV mode. At this point in time I like Xenoglossia more, but I’m highly biased towards giant robots.

  16. Everyone loves giant robots, but this show will probably have better music.
Yeah, I really liked Xenoglossia too. Fuck the haters.

  17. Oh god – the horror. It’s rare that I’m not willing to give a show a second episode, but this is one of them.
I can only hope that these “characters” accidentally wander into Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni …

  18. «Chibiki» is a valid Russian diminutive form of the word «chibi», which in turn is a Japanese word for diminutive person (as the Wikipedia entry for «chibi» says).
    Sounds pretty cool.

  19. @ar & Daiz
Thanks for clarifying. Not really a big issue, I can hear and read their names in the actual subs after all. But it’s kinda lame how A-1 put “effort” in that.
(also, lol @ me trying to remember their names)

  20. thx.
i actually thought this was kinda boring, but i’ll watch it out of respect for all the effort that is being put into it

  21. we’ve already turned up a couple misses in kanji, romanization etc. these will be corrected in a v2/batch-type thing. thanks to everyone who pointed them out, we appreciate it!
    @mithgol
be assured that’s a complete coincidence ^^ (chi)haya hi(bi)ki mi(ki) was the only way i could get a name that sounded decent. ‘chibi’ popping up was just icing on the cake.

  22. Gotta say, I really enjoyed this one! The perspective was a bit awkward at first, but once you hit the end of the episode, I think I really enjoy how they did it (and I’m quite certain they’ll be using a more “normal” perspective for the remainder of the series). A very nice tip of the hat to the original games/novels, leading in to the show proper.
Looking forward to more releases; to “chibiki”, props for the workmanship, the subs are spot-on (I can’t speak for translation accuracy without knowing Japanese myself, but I appreciate the lack of errors in grammar and spelling that so often knock me out of the story). Keep up the standard! It’s most definitely noticed and appreciated.

  23. I didnt want to watch this at first but…. At least I know who to blame when I end up spending $$ on this: Kusion. And akiba.

  24. It’s an UTW release so the subs are good, though that’s all about this show. I managed to sit through it. Barely. Cute girls doing well euhm nothing really. Not even cute things. I hope the rest you’re doing this season is worth watching.

  25. I lost interest pretty quickly, so started working on one of my projects instead and simply look each time a new subtitle appeared by listening to the conversation. Who got the idea to mute one of the characters??? It annoyed the hell out of me to rewind the video a little every 5 minutes just because they of some reason decided not to voice the cameraman…
Considering the hype here on the blog this was pretty lame. Characters were ugly animated and nothing really happened since they spent the whole episode on character introductions. I’m going to be fair though and watch at least the next episode too before dropping it.

  26. Ty for doing idolmaster – been waiting for this (big fan of chihaya and takane 😀 )
But you also should have done usagi drop, that one seems very awesome, too. But of course it’s being done by horriblesubs.

  27. I really reallly really want the next episode, and I wish I knew Japanese had a japanese xbox and both of these games.

  28. @jake
the original idols from The iDOLM@STER are: haruka, chihaya, yukiho, makoto, yayoi, iori, ami/mami, azusa, ritsuko.
miki joined 765 in the x360 port of the arcade game.
in the psp port of the game, The iDOLM@STER SP, miki leaves 765 Pro to make a unit with hibiki and takane (project fairy) in 961 Pro.
in the ds game, The iDOLM@STER: Dearly Stars, ai, eri and ryo join 876 Pro.
in the x360 sequel, the original cast and miki, hibiki and takane are all members of 765 to begin with and ritsuko has recently quit being an idol in order to pursue her initial dream of being a producer.
THE iDOLM@STER anime follows the plot of the xbox360 sequel, so no, not every single idol is included (most notably 876 Pro’s idols), but every 765 idol and a couple of new recruits are. hope that answers your question!

  29. I’m going to watch it ONLY because iDOLM@STER made Berserk shit. There must be something captivating about these girls that caused Miura to ditch his godly creation.

  30. Excellent work :3 Though I had some trouble trying to get the subs to work correctly x-x; what program would you recommended viewing the file in? Tried DivX so far.

  31. @Lily
DivX is terrible at rendering subtitles (and doesn’t do justice to the video itself either). You should be using CCCP (aka Combined Community Codec Pack). You can find it here: http://www.cccp-project.net/ Download it, install it, and then play your videos with it. For the most part it should handle absolutely every video you would like to watch.

  32. Thanks for the release, but this show is just terrible. I had waited to watch because everybody was giving it such poor reviews and saying how bad it was. After watching the first ep, they’re right. The whole POV without the cameraman speaking is terrible and hopefully they ditch that crap before they submarine this series before it even has a chance.
