Hello everyone, I have recently joined this group as a translator, and my first project will be Kamisama no Memochou. This first episode turned out to be extremely enjoyable for me, since it’s like modern Gosick without deus ex machina solutions. Please enjoy!
This is my very first release post, so I thought I should take this opportunity to make a proper introduction.
I have been a fansubber since 2005, starting with Japanese live-action drama and moving on to movies. Anime has been my obsession for the past 2 years, and I have been translating 2D-video since last winter. I tend to have a mainstream taste, but I’m not afraid to speak out against the majority. You may have already read some of my film and anime reviews, and I know I come across very opinionated at times… I’m very passionate about anime and Japanese movies. I can be very outspoken about fansubbing too, but I will try my best not to stir up any drama with UTW πŸ™‚
Somewhat “serious” or “sentimental” series usually get my attention. It’s probably why I really loved KamiMemo’s first episode, because it’s very much about the people as the case itself. You can expect to see me picking more series like it in the future if I can continue to translate many more series here. I am usually extremely picky when it comes to selecting which series to translate, but I definitely will finish what I have started (unless it’s agreed in advance that I would only translate a few episodes). So far, I have a perfect track record for completion of series, and I intend to extend that streak here in this group.
As some of you may have already noticed, I was the translator who “dropped” this series with gg fansubs. While the statement on that gg post was entirely correct, there is a really long and messy story behind it, and I want to clarify a few things.
I had originally proposed working on KamiMemo with UTW before gg, prior to taking the TL test, but certain turn of events led to it being released with gg. However, CR licensing had taken every show I was interested in, so I had to ask koda at gg to let me translate KamiMemo with UTW instead. Props to koda for putting up with my selfish requests, and assigning me to another great series this season!
Long story short, there was a typical fansub coordination nightmare at the beginning of the season, and I somehow ended up with two shows I really love for groups that I originally wanted to work with… because I’m lucky like that.
I also want to make a statement that all the shortcomings in gg fansub’s first KamiMemo release were completely my fault and mine alone. I underestimated speedsubbing by working under far-less-than-optimal physical conditions, and made miscommunications that led to it being released without editing. Needless to say, it will never happen again, especially with a group with such high standards as UTW, and I will do my best to produce the quality of translations expected from me.
I have been around here only for a brief period, but the staff and posters here at UTW seem very friendly, and I hope this will be the beginning of a long-lasting relationship.
So as I pray, Unlimited Translation Works!

NB:

This episode is 48mins long thus the file size is equivalent to roughly 2 single episodes.

1. Hello hello. looking forward to seeing your work on this. Loved your stuff on some of the live action movies you subbed.

2. Oh, and just now a did read the text wall.
Welcome,8thSin. Nice Intro!
Just don’t troll the subs like gg, lol (I know, I know, you said you’re serious about it).
Yeah,I’m a seinen fan, not to that extent but I do like “serious” and “sentimal” series as well, rather I like intelligent series (Toaru) and I demand lolis, pantyshots and some gag to relieve the tension, well this anime has it all, so let’s go~~
Now let me dinner watch one of the few shounen I follow (NM) that is release today.
~Welcome~~

3. Welcome to UTW, 8thSin. Btw when you said you will translate KamiMemo with different group, I thought you meant with GotWoot (since you are member there)

4. well… nice to meet you, 8thSin… this is certainly something that does not happen too often! Thanks for the introduction and the great subs on this show! HOPE TO SEE MORE OF YOUR WORK NOW AND INTO THE FUTURE! WELCOME TO UTW!

5. woa, welcome.
And ur so formal. UTW is cool and friendly. The atmosphere they give off is always lovable.
gg rocks at some points, but their posts always give a hard moment in sweats.
PS: I was very curious about the translator who dropped gg and went out (but its nice ur now working with both groups). Gud luck.

6. Hm, looks like Gosick, can’t be a good thing. Wait…
“Gosick without deus ex machina solutions.”
Problem solved. Will give it a shot.

7. Wellcome to UTW 8thsin πŸ™‚
Know that your work is already appreciated and enjoyed πŸ˜›
I’m sure you’ll fit right in.
Ps. Loved the Fate/Stay Night reference! ~.^

8. @shandris & any others
Episode length is 48mins, it is twice as long as normal thus the file size is TWICE as big too!

9. Woah 800mb! I look forward to this! Thanks for this episode. And I agree w/ whoever said the new translator seems cool!

10. A human that call himself/herself “human” needs to be a person who don’t hold anything back, who is also outgoing/outspoken and who go against the mainstream [The Normals :P] people’s thinking or behavior. (Many times do i think that an “rebel” looks quite alot like each other?)
But whatever you are Approved.<3
\^o^/

11. Thanks for the warm welcome~
That release post came out a bit more formal (and long) than I had originally intended, but I didn’t want to sound too trollish because of where I was translating this with before. Also had to do some damage control for the trail of mess I left behind @_@;
@Nisen:
Sounds like a challenge.
We’ll see who gets the girl :p

12. Thanks for this one. I was really worried when I saw other groups subs and quality. Now I will decide if I’ll drop tis one based on your subs, but thats a rare possibility πŸ™‚

13. So… How does this relate to the pre-airs released on gg site? Is this the same episodes in 1 file?

14. w00t thanks for this! and welcome 8thsin and i lol’d at fate/stay night reference =D (which proves you’re awesome =D)

15. ^ πŸ™‚
@Laovniux, @nINJAkECIL
Yes, it’s same content as the two pre-airs combined, except this is encoded from another station that’s not AT-X (this is not “pre-air”), so supposedly its RAW video quality is far superior.

16. enjo kousai = prostitution ?
It doesnt sound right. It’s not exactly prostitution, is it ?
According to wiki, it’s “compensated dating”. Can u reconsider it?

17. @ choco
????(enjokousai) originally means “dating with compensation”, true.
However, nowadays in japan/japanese media the meaning is more like “schoolgirl prostitution” (older/middle-aged men schoolgirls basically)
so it’s perefectly fine to translate it as prostitution. In fact, considering the context “compensated dating” doesn’t work.
@8thSin
I personally liked your translation more than EveTaku’s version. I didn’t notice major TL errors worth mentioning in either version, but your lines better match the japanese tone imho.
The only thing that I can issue would be ????????????????????in the op.
?????? refers to an “emotional scar, that is not able to heal” here
??? without counterpart implies that the speaker wants something to happen. And ???is more like reaching/getting through. to me, reach out is more like ????or if you want to use ??, ??????
So, “If only our voices could reach through your unhealing scar” (it implies that the scar was unable to heal so far, but he wants their voices to be able to help/heal that scar, there may be a better phrasing for it, but you should understand what I mean from the explanation)
I know, I am sort of fussy when it comes to japanese…sorry about that…

18. @choco
What Chris said is true. I just want to add that Japanese is a very high context language, and we as J-E translators are supposed to convert them into low context language that is English (for example, “Do you want to eat?” would just be “Eat?” in Japanese). The Wikipedia page does mention the “common connotation” for enjo-kousai as teen prostitution, and in this case, it’s clearly pointing out to “prostitution” rather than just paying for their company.
Also, I have a strong resistance to using awkward dictionary translations like “I can’t be helped”, and “compensated dating” is literally “enjo-kousai” 2 words dictionary translated. I tend to avoid these at all costs :p
@Chris
I actually had “unhealable wounds” (yeah, it should’ve been unhealing) in gg release, and I thought, if it’s unhealing wounds, then it’s a “scar”. I didn’t like “unhealable scar” because that sounded like an oxymoron to me.
I further changed “scar” to “permanent scar”, which technically is somewhat redundant, but the term is often used to describe emotional or metaphoric wounds, but at the same time leaving enough ambiguity for your own interpretation.
Thanks for the feedback.

19. To my unterstanding “??” in itself already means “scar” but well, unhealing scar is sort of redundant as well, so it comes down to personal preference and I just didnt happen to like “permanent scar” πŸ˜‰

20. @Chris
Yeah, personal preference here too, didn’t like “unhealable scar”, so originally changed “scar” to “wound” lol, only that didn’t solve the problem either.

21. You are a boss translation guy. Thanks very much for this show, appreciate it very much. Also, question, what’s the eta between airing and subbed for you, Like what day or days a week could we expect it. Thanks in advance.

22. shit i totally didnt notice how long the episode was till i read the post i already watched it and everything i actually had to check that it was really that long. the episode totally didn’t feel that long.

23. It seems that no one seems to have picked up on something about this series (if they have, they’re being rather quite about it). What’s with the lack of acknowledgement about the Ender’s Game series references? At 19:06
Alice mentions that the role of “true” detectives is “speaking for the dead”, which is something that happened at the end of _Ender’s_Game_, with Ender’s writings of “Speaker for the Dead” and “The Hegemon.”
24. @Neinome
Looks at Japanese Wikipedia for KamiMemo… *facepalms*.
I actually noticed the name while translating, and I chuckled “what a coincidence”, because I thought prodigies were pretty common, and there’s no ansible, battle school, other geniuses etc etc.
But now it all clicks “God’s Memo Pad” was “Hive Queen” and “The Hegemon”, and Alice is Speaker for the Dead!
It’s kind of sad, because “Ender’s Game” is one of my favorite SF novels of all time, and I actually own 6 books in Ender and Shadow series.
25. @Neinome:
1) Ender’s Game sucked ass.
2) Speaker for the Dead was because he killed so many fucking zergs. Not because he’s a detective or any shit like that.
3) When a character says, “Oh my god!”, is he/she referencing the bible?
L2differentiate between allusions and coincidences.

26. “Somewhat β€œserious” or β€œsentimental” series usually get my attention.”
I like you already.

27. With the scar reference this is where you run into the true art of translation. If you want to be literal it is “unhealing scar” but artisticly you could just as easily use “unending pain” or “unfading scar” or even “wounded heart” if you want to really stretch it. Like any art with too much polish and perfection one can ruin a work so I think you’re doing a great job and would like to thank you for it.

28. @kyonyUU
protip: don’t protip while being clueless.
@8th
“Gosick without deus ex machina solutions”
If gosick was deus ex machina then this was deus ex machina too. But most probably you are just using it wrong πŸ˜‰

29. It was my experience with GoSick that all the solutions had a fairly straight forward logic to them. Of course they could not be deduced without Victorique’s explanations as some of the observations she made just can’t be conveyed through drawing (The opacity and body of the wine in the Queen Berry mystery, or the fact that the wine label had been lifted from an old bottle and placed on a new one). Limitations of the medium, and using a character to bridge those limitations doesn’t necessarily make it a deus ex machina thing for me. It also made me smile how many people exploited the gullibility of Sauville πŸ˜€ (The Marquis (Douche that he was), Victorique, Leviathan)
I expect great things from this series, thank you for working on it UTW/8thSin. My JP still needs a lot of polishing ^^;

30. Welcome aboard, I look forward to enjoying your work on KamiMemo. You’ve joined up with an excellent, high standard group; just make sure to keep enjoying yourself.

31. @WAWA
Maybe I wasn’t paying as much attention to Gosick… I thought there were few cases where Victorique brought up new pieces of evidence in solution. KamiMemo seemed to have its evidence spread out far more evenly and emphasized them. Then they were gathered and assembled in a much more convincing manner. Well, it’s just the first episode, so we’ll have to see what happens πŸ˜‰
@Niker
Regular ~25 min episodes after ep1.

32. Since this was first a gg release, does it mean that there won’t be any honorifics & japanese terms?

33. @8thSin
So it was a deliberate reference? I’m thinking the producer guy is some english lit fan. Speaker, Lolita, Alice? Seems quite a feat to have such western themes in a Japan-based show if it were coincidence.
@kyonyUU
1) Might have been yours if you’re saying that.
2) Feels guilt for deaths which were not her fault, check. Isolated genius, check. Paedobear material, check.
3) For god’s sake, yes.

34. @kyonyUU
1) taste are taste i guess.. i liked ender’s series πŸ™‚
2) you know jack shit than.. speaker of the dead isn’t just because he killed a ton of zergs… he considers himself the speaker for those whose voice can no longer be heard, etcetc..
given your misinterpretation i’d really re-read at least that book πŸ™‚

35. this show is the only one where i hate every single character and hate the incredibly forced plot 30 minutes in

36. you would think after 47 minutes they could string a coherent plot together, but they couldn’t, because they filled it with 30 minutes of nothing

37. I remember you! You translated and subbed Mizuki Nana’s Astrogation PV! ^^
Good luck with your time at UTW!
