Donation Drive

Donations have closed!
I’ll announce Summer 2013 plans later today or tomorrow.
Through this donation drive, we’ve raised a total of US$3,778.13 from exactly 200 contributors in the space of 24 hours. Words cannot describe how alarmed I was in the first 12 hours (when you guys were throwing money at us at a rate of over $200 per hour) and in the later 12 hours (when you guys were still throwing money at us when we already had enough money to fund our main servers for years).
It won’t be until at least several weeks from now that all the funds will be withdrawn to the appropriate accounts and available for use, as you guys have given us way more than I could have imagined. I must admit I’m not sure what I’ll do with all this money assuming I successfully withdraw them, but you have my solemn word that not a single dime will be used that does not contribute to UTW (and ultimately you guys) in some way. Early ideas include a new encoding/distro server situated in East Asia (which tend to be more expensive).
In the event I am unsuccessful in withdrawing the funds, I will do my very, very best to get them refunded to all of you donators. But in the meantime, fingers crossed!
The following words do injustice to the unbelievable generosity of those of you who contributed, but they come from the bottom of my heart.
Thank you all so much.
Previous Post:
With July just around the corner, I’ve decided to change up how donations will go this time based on your input.
Donations will be opened 12PM Japan time (UTC+9) this coming Sunday, June 30, 2013 (that would be 11PM June 29 EDT, UTC-4), and closed 24 hours later. There will be no specific donation limit or target; we will use the funds raised to cover the costs for as long as they last. Depending on the turnout, we may not need to open donations again for a long time.
Please let me know if that time window is good for you guys. I was very impressed and touched by how quickly and generously you all responded to our call for help last month, and I look forward to the miracles you will create this time round!
P.S.: As a reference, the base minimum monthly cost on my end is about $100 a month, mainly to cover server costs.

It was on 1.8k when i donated and youre now a fair bit over 2k, ill be back later to see if theres a nice round number it can be topped off to, considering you have more than enough to run the server for a while feel free to throw mine back into the savings recovery fund (mentioning it because of what you said in your first post about donations)
keep up the good work guys 🙂

Guys, I’m paying for my fansubbing out of my own pocket. If we got ten, nay, five percent of that per month, we could easily run the group without worrying about costs. Teach me your trick? lol.

  64. It’s the consistent quality that makes people want to support UTW and that very fact is being reflected by the amount donated so far. That’s just so freaking awesome.

  119. Sikroth on July 1, 2013 at 3:36 am said:

I don’t think this is disgusting, or even inaproppiate. Nobody is being forced to pay, the same way UTW is not forced to sub anything.

  120. @anonanon
I don’t believe fansubbers should request money for operations from their audience as I don’t think there should be any financial incentive for people to fansub. Naturally, I apply this viewpoint to all groups. I’m just commenting here right now because $4,000 in a day is slightly more than a $40 donation drive every month.

This is not an internally consistent statement. “I don’t think there should be a financial incentive” is not the same thing as “I think money should be an ongoing cost to it”. Which do you mean? By definition, merely covering operations would result in a net of zero in capital costs (time investment cost would still be there of course). Do you just not want people to be making a business out of it (more than reasonable as long as its fansubbing, though some group trying for a license would be quite interesting) or do you think it should require private wealth? What if the audience disagrees with you on how desirable an effect that would have on the ecosystem?
I was going to write more here about the massive market failure that fansubbing represents and the moral effects I think that has, but I deleted it, this isn’t really the place for that. Suffice it to say there are fewer more pure examples of simple voting in action then this, and the people have spoken.

I’m just commenting here right now because $4,000 in a day is slightly more than a $40 donation drive every month.

While you have a superb grasp of English, you may wish to revisit your studies on mathematics. A $4k drive in a day, done once every 8.4 years, would not in fact be more then $40/month. Also, try more like $100-200 month (based on the min cost stated here and what other subbers like commie do). If you want to oppose any donations at all period then fine, but following that up with an assertion that there is a difference due to periods when the average is the same is retarded. D_S pls.

  124. @Dark_Sage
It’s not like UTW is doing this for the money in the first place. Moreover, I wouldn’t even consider this a “financial incentive” because this is merely upkeep for the costs mentioned. It’s not like they’re lavishly spending it on something else. It’s less about gaining money for them, and more about not spending more of their own money because they can’t afford to. If we get fansubs for free, they should fansub for free especially with their quality of subs.
At the end of the day, this is a donation and should be treated as such. If people are willing to donate, I don’t see anything “disgusting” about it. Maybe look at it from their perspective? Shelling out hundreds of dollars every month isn’t something everyone can afford.

If after a few months of operations a fansub group asked for help to keep running their servers, my opinion of the group would not be that great.
However, the situation is very different. Raze set this up as a last resort. Medical School itself isn’t cheap, and at least Raze is unable to financially support it for a worthy cause. The previous donation timeframe was very short, and the members felt robbed by the lack of ability for them to contribute. However, he’s obviously put a ton of money into this already, and as the quality of the subs is fantastic, it’s hard to say that it’s disgusting.
Unless you mean that it’s disgusting that a fansub group can be so loved that it can garner that much money in a day. Not gonna lie, it is a bit crazy.
While the money isn’t going to last a decade (like I thought it might), it will last for long enough for people to forget this and be willing to donate next time it comes up. I’m a tiny bit sad that I didn’t find the money to donate this time around, but I fully support the subs and hope that maybe once I graduate this December I can dedicate time to the subs themselves.

  127. Zanon, the capital should come from the fansubbers, not the fans, who are never given a complete picture of how the money they provide will factor in. The money could cover operations (lol private servers) for 37 months, sure. But how long do you think UTW’s gonna last? 3 more years? We already have betting pools on IRC for when the group goes into perma-hibernation. Face it, the money’s gonna be spent on a rig for whichever manchild holds the purse strings in this operation. That’s how it’s always been with fansubbing and it’s one of the worst things about the scene.
Also, you completely misread my $4,000 comment. Try again, this time with literacy.

  128. D_S, stop being so tsundere. I’ll donate to crymore to once you ask for it. <3

Don’t know about anyone else, but I donated because I have a mancrush on Raze. I hope this ~$3,700 success will result in more karaoke stylings from this group.

Ok, so you do think fansubbing should be left to the rich, or saints or something, independent of actual quality. That’s a self-consistent position, but one I also think is phenomenally stupid. Market economics has an impact just as it does everywhere else.

who are never given a complete picture of how the money they provide will factor in. The money could cover operations (lol private servers) for 37 months, sure. But how long do you think UTW’s gonna last?

All irrelevant. You seem a bit confused: this is not a kickstarter or stock investment, it’s a donation, the first and only one, and any decisions anyone made came in light of their previous years of activity. While I don’t expect them to close up shop tomorrow, if they did then so be it, I chose an amount I was comfortable given the entirety of UTW so far. You wrap your comfortable cynicism around you like a warm blanket, but in this case it’s inapplicable no matter what the mindset.

Face it, the money’s gonna be spent on a rig for whichever manchild holds the purse strings in this operation.

Always a possibility, but one I don’t personally find a probability here. Academic regardless though.

Also, you completely misread my $4,000 comment. Try again, this time with literacy.

Try growing a spine and admitting you had no point and fucked up there entirely. I mean seriously D_S? You’re going to go for the old “nuh uh I don’t have to defend my point, it’s up to you to keep rereading and guessing at it!” shtick? You wouldn’t happen to be a creationist, antivaxxer or climate denialist would you? Because that’s one straight from their favorite playbook.

  134. How much do you think fansubbing actually costs? What, do you think Aegisub has a license you’ve gotta pay for? The money groups blow on this shit only goes to minor increased efficiencies. And those efficiencies are nice to have, but so is whiskey. Wanna buy my next Maker’s? I make anime too, so I obviously deserve a reward for it.
“I’m just commenting here right now because $4,000 in a day is slightly more than a $40 donation drive every month.” was a comment about the exceptionality of the situation and why I was commenting here rather than on a random group’s $40 monthly donation drive.

Even though I understand why ppl dislike a fansub group asking for money, but you also have to consider fansub stuff is not real … uhm lets say its not completly legal. So subgroups can’t cover their cost on their own with advertisement for instance. Fansub-groups themselves don’t need to sub if they dont want to (or at least the translators dont need that). Furthermore UTW locked the donations button. Thats something not every group does. That 4k sum is something ppl willed to donate. That is not the money UTW asked you to pay.

  141. I-It’s not like I did it for you, Raze… <.<
Hopefully all of the money can be successfully withdrawn. You guys deserve all of it and I hope you'll continue to bring us such great subs for a few more years.

I’m thinking D_S doesn’t have a job… and maybe not a hobby either (at least one that requires any investment – jerking it to hentai doesn’t count as a hobby). There are probably tons of fansubbers that do actually carry 100% of the costs involved – they’re called “fluent Japanese speakers”. However, since they finance everything themselves – they don’t even bother to write the subs (and they certainly don’t host them on a server that gets hammered every month with 1000’s of hits). They just watch the shows by themselves, and no one else get’s the benefit of being able to watch something interesting that’s most likely never going to be released in their native language.
I remember when the same arguments went through the warez community a decade ago – as if it is somehow possible to have a “moral high-ground”, while doing something that is inherently illegal (yes, I mean just WATCHING a fansub). It’s hillarious(ly ironic) at best and hypocritical bullshit at worst.

Hope I’ll get to donate at the next donation drive, I really enjoy your work, one of the few groups that upload on schedule (or at least within a day from it).
Thanks for all the hard work, so that we less fortunate that don’t understand Japanese can enjoy these great shows!

  144. Robinde67 on July 1, 2013 at 1:19 pm said:

    @Digicidal
In my native language, I only know a number of shows that can be counted on both of my hands, at least that is dubbed, subbed from English is more common.
However, I enjoy the Japanese language, it sounds much more emotional and versatile than any other language I know (just changing the length of a vowel can change the meaning entirely), so I enjoy subbed much more than dubbed, even though I’m terrible at the language.

  145. Well, D_S. Problem here is that you have read the situation wrongly. They are not ‘requesting’ funds. They are simply providing an avenue in which funds can reach them. This is not an exchange of cost and benefit, which you seem to be suggesting, but instead it is the response of people to such positive externalities. People are not obligated to pay up, but have instead rationally decided that contributing funds so as promote the continued existence of UTW’s public good, namely their fansubs. In a way, it is an investment on their part to safeguard their supply of fansubs. Both consumer and supplier benefit. What is immoral or disgusting about that?

  146. litokid on July 1, 2013 at 3:54 pm said:

Oh, wow. Congrats on a successful donation drive, guys! It’s well deserved – I’ve come to choose UTW over any other group’s release if the show’s available.
For anyone who has issue with the $4k figure, compared to other groups who ask for only $40, $100 a month…I’ll just say this:
UTW did NOT ask for $4k.
Other groups have precise targets that they ask for. I’m not saying that’s bad – in fact, it shows that they don’t want to get more than necessary to fund operations, and that’s admirable. But it’s pointless to criticize a group who only opened donations and asked for anything people care to give. The $3778 figure came from the fans, not the group. It’s the value that the fans feel their service to the community has been worth, not the price they placed on it.

seriously don’t get the haters….maybe you should go look up the definition of “DONATION” before you start flaming….
    1. no one pointed a gun at anyone forcing them to give money, everyone that donated did it out of the kindness of their hearts and appreciation for this fansub group
    2. AFTER 3 YEARS of UTW funding everything by themselves it came to a point where Raze has finally even tho still hesitant is asking for donation unlike every other fansub group that has a permanent donate button on their websites
    3. you’re not paying for anything so I don’t see how you have any right to criticize or complain
and lastly the biggest thing that still puzzles me to this day…
if you don’t like it… don’t use it… if you think you can do better.. the by all means start your own fansub group, buy the blue-rays with your own money, pay for the servers yourselves, spend hours everyday making sure the translation is correct, the timing is dead on…

Raze and crew does a sexy job at what they do and being a student myself (working on my second bachelor’s degree, though, not med school) I know how rough it can be to pay for stuff that you love to do. Here’s to more years of UTW sexiness! *raises a glass of Dr Pepper*

  151. Wow, we serious in here.
If there’s a big faux pas in fansubbing, it’s got to be routinely dropping series out of laziness *cough cough*, not asking for donations every now and then. If you’ve got principles, fine; I personally wouldn’t presume to take donations if I were running a group. I can appreciate the argument and forget who the messenger is.
Server fees like that are relatively justified for a group that routinely speedsubs (and sometimes wakes up at weird hours to do so); much of the audience cares about the release speed, after all.
