First of all, thanks for the release!
With that out of the way, my question is, I’m aware of the double meaning, but do you really mean “ufotable continually impressing”? I’m loving the show myself, but I continually find old time Fate fans whose criticism is relentless and continually rate the anime as sh*t.
So, in your eyes, is the adaptation lacking and I’m just easy to pleasure or it really is good?

Most old time Fate fans I know seem to quite like it, but whatever. ┐( ̄_ ̄)┌ That’s the impression I’m getting anyway.

As someone who read the VN a few years ago and went on to extended universe material, I can say that I really enjoy this adaptation. Sure, there are some hiccups here and there, but, overall, this anime holds content that both entertains new viewers to the series and panders to older fans that have already experienced the story. Most of the angry Fate fans feel more like a vocal minority that are can’t understand when certain aspects from the VN can’t be transferred over to a visual format due to time-constraints and particular elements of a novel being difficult to be transitioned into tv. There are some points I agree with such as having more monologues for Shirou to better understand his character; although, the more recent episodes seem to be making up for that, or adding discussions for how Shirou’s magic works like saying how Shirou would feel the swords forcing his body to move like a Servant does or how each time he projects he causes severe damage to his internals due to having not mastered its use yet which is why he constantly falters or passes out after using it in the beginning. Yet, there are certain topics that are ridiculous like “oh, this scene is far too short. It should be longer to not feel as half-assed.” <- in regards to Archer vs Lancer or the UBW scene. People that have truly read the original work know that those scenes are as short as they were in the anime. It's just that they felt longer because of the text describing everything that occurred in those short instances in detail. I've also heard complaining about the new content, but while they aren't perfect, I feel that they add a bit of spice for people that know what will happen and want to see something fresh that still corresponds with the verse. However, just saying that those scenes are only "wasting time that could have been used for monologues" is a ridiculous argument. If ufotable wanted more monologues, they would put them in the BDs as extras. Many of them aren't entirely necessary as well, and as I stated earlier, the studio seems to be including the more essential ones as of late.
Sorry for the wall of text.

I just wanted to post and say thank you Shrike for that very helpful analysis. It seems the Fate franchise is really polarizing and your insight was far more helpful to old and new fans alike. However, how do you feel about UBW being adapted and not redoing the Fate route first? To me it feels like them adapting the middle route made the characters a lot more hollow, since the majority of them aren’t really given any depth before they’re killed off, like they were of no consequence anyways. I haven’t played the VN, but in comparison with another work from the franchise, Fate/Zero was a much more complete experience for me so far.

  16. andy on May 21, 2015 at 5:41 am said:

@Tiger I’m pretty sure they didn’t do a Fate anime because there already is one, even if it is by another studio. I’m more psyched for a Heaven’s Feel anime honestly. UBW was cool and all, but there was already a movie. I want to see animated Saber Alter!
I like this anime in general, the only thing that kind of gets me down is that in the VN there was a lot of internal stuff with Shirou going on regarding developing his powers and him getting the hang of them. I understand that they can’t have all the details in the anime, but it just seems to me that in the anime he just gets his powers out of nowhere, and is somehow just as good as Archer.
Also, I was surprised at the glimpse of adult Shirou in this episode. So does that mean he didn’t even get his white hair and voice change until he became a Guardian? I thought he had white hair and stuff because he lived to be that old.

  17. ShrikeRisen on May 21, 2015 at 6:58 am said:

@Tiger The Fate route would have allowed the viewers to get a glimpse into Rider, Berserker, and Illya’s characters to better sympathize with their fates in UBW. However, Rider and Illya get the most characterization in HF; so, hopefully, the movies will not disappoint in that aspect. The major downfall of not doing the Fate route is that most of Saber’s characterization is cut as it is her route. For example, do you know about Saber’s sheathe, Avalon? Kiritsugu placed that NP inside of Shirou in order to save his life from the fire due to its natural regenerative properties. When Shirou is contracted with Saber, the sheathe reacts to Saber’s unique prana causing Shirou’s wounds to heal as fast as they did in season 1. Also, while the anime briefly touched on it in this episode, Saber’s wish is to make someone else draw Caliburn from the stone and be king of Britain due to failing at stopping the Saxon invasion. She earnestly believes that she failed her country and even made a deal with the Counter Force, much like Archer did, stating she would even serve as a Counter Guardian if it let her finally obtain the Grail. Due to her unique situation, she can leave the constant cycle of summonings for the HGW by willingly destroying the Grail with her own power and denying that wish herself. Archer talks about this in UBW by stating that “someday, someone will appear to save you. Yet, it seems that that will not happen in this world.” He also says something about not being to save her in his present state as such an act would be hypocritical. Later, during the Shirou fight, Archer briefly talks about Avalon and its abilities; also, he clearly knows Saber’s true identity along with the power of Excalibur. Shirou only learns about these plot devices in the Fate route which seems to indicate that Archer’s timeline had some similar aspects to it. (Note that I have my own fan theory because of some translated text from Extra CCC and certain scenes in the VN, but I don’t to divulge into some headcanon of mine that isn’t verified).
@andy Shirou gained his white hair, darker skin, and gray eyes through constant use of projection magic as repeated uses have side effects on the user’s body.
I’ll have to look for the citation, but I remember hearing that Shirou made the contract with Alaya when he was in his late 20s-early 30s while he died in his late 30s. It’s possible that after receiving power from Alaya Shirou began to abuse his magic over and over until it had permanent side effects resulting in Archer’s appearance.

  18. Tiger on May 21, 2015 at 7:46 am said:

@Shike Thanks for the incredibly detailed explanation, however what you said in regards to Saber doesn’t quite make sense. She wants the Grail so much that she’d be willing to become a Counter Guardian and yet she has the power to destroy it and deny herself that wish? Kinda contradictory no? I’ve never experienced the Fate route, but I’m assuming she learns that the Grail is actually corrupted and then opts to destroy it with Shirou’s help. Who saves Saber though if that happens? Unless Shirou helps her make peace with her past.
@andy From what I’ve gathered in another forum, some people are upset at the fact that Shirou should’ve had his “Archer look” at the scene where he was making a pact with the Counter Force. That appearance is an accumulation of his life’s efforts and having the anime make the implication that Alaya gave him his powers instead is a slap to the face, apparently. I also agree with your assessment of Shirou and the lack of explanation for his power-ups. It really makes a lot of it seem like asspulls. T_T Not to mention I find Shirou really dull.

  19. ShrikeRisen on May 21, 2015 at 3:08 pm said:

@Tiger I honestly don’t think this site is the best place to be discussing this topic. If you want to continue after I talk about this last question, we communicate by email or something.
Yes, Saber’s wish is quite contradictory. She does not know about the Grail’s corruption, yet before her death, she made a deal with the Counter Force to have the Grail in return for her service. She hasn’t served as a Guardian like Archer has yet due to not winning the Grail; however, she can destroy her own contract by denying the Holy Grail and her wish, herself.
Yes, Shirou helps Saber move past her issues, and she uses Excalibur on the Holy Grail of her own free will unlike in Zero. This lets her finally move on instead of suffer for all eternity. (Look up “Continuation of the Dream.” It’s the ending scene to the Fate route, and it shows Saber finally dying after she gives up on the Grail and has come to terms with the fact that she did everything she could as king of Britain).

As an old Fate fucker, I like this adaptation. Especially how they are showing us things that were only implied as to have happened in the VN. For example, Gilgamesh killing the maids, Caster killing her master, Archer’s life explained in detail.
One of the things I don’t like is how their faces look but its minor. I’d rather have the VN or Deen face over ufotables, especially for Tohsaka. I’m sure a lot of people would disagree with me on this.
That said, I really think their talent would be better used on Heaven’s Feel as it has a much darker vibe and fits ufotable’s style. Especially considering Fate and UBW already exist in anime form. I know a movie is planned for Heaven’s Feel but you can’t just cram everything in one movie unless it ends up being 3 hours long and/or you leave out some things. I just don’t want it to feel rushed like the UBW movie did.

  26. ^ I’m with you on that… Would rather prefer an actual series or even a 6+ Ep. OVA rather than one very long movie or a very rushed 90 min. one. Or… Or… They actually try the same thing they did with KnK, actually…

Hey guys! You’ll have to fix a lot of lines in CR’s script, check this out -> http://i.imgur.com/0a2bjjH.jpg

  28. ShrikeRisen on May 25, 2015 at 12:20 am said:

@kotelo There is also the deal with Shirou chanting his Japanese mantra.
CR translated it as “Steel is my body” instead of “My body is made out of swords” which conveys the meaning behind Shirou’s mindset while also indicating Shirou’s Origin which is Sword.
The whole “you may be correct, but that doesn’t mean you’re right” line feels a little vague. Although, that can be discussed as correct meaning factual true while the definition of “right” being used meaning morally just. Still, I’ve noticed that some people were a little confused by that.

  29. crysis on May 25, 2015 at 3:11 am said:

@ShrikeRisen Yeah, the line should have been more clear as you indicated: “You may be right, but that doesn’t mean you were justified.”

Let’s just say, I think most Fate fans enjoy the adaption. However VN purists are always going to hate since it’s not a VN and the anime can’t convey literally everything and still be interesting.

    @dakoslug
It has nothing to do with the VN, we’re talking about poor translation choices from Aniplex. They fucked up a lot of lines in ep20.
1.- They put “Steel is my body” instead of “I am the bone of my sword”.
2.- After Archer stabs Shirou in the leg, he starts talking in first person. It should have been like this -> http://imgur.com/a/K3022#0
3.- The weird translated line at the end about being right.
