Here’s the rest of the BGata bluray releases! Since we kinda got lazy with volume 5 and see little point in releasing the volumes separately, we’ve bundled the last two volumes up.
And so we had to wait until the very last BD episode to see… what we had hoped the BGata BDs would give us from the get-go. I guess it makes sense since that’s also when Kosuda himself sees it for the first time.
It’s pretty much been just us (Raze and ar) for this whole BD project, but our buddy Akuji-sama over at Ryuumaru stepped in to QC episodes 9 and 10 for us. Thank you!
So that’s another BD project completed. I suppose we’ll batch this up and the Angel Beats! BDs sometime next week.

episode 12 720p seems to have a problem on the subs, the font is not muxed in the video.
Can anyone explain to me what CRF 16.5, 2-pass mixed mean? how can crf and 2-pass mix?

CRF = constant rate factor (lower = better quality)
2-pass mixed = video encoded in 2 passes (better quality)
speaking of CRF, i wonder why it is lower for the 720p version o.o

2-pass mixed just means using CRF for the stats pass (to determine bitrate) and encoding the second pass with the CRF determined bitrate.

Typically the lower the res the lower the crf needs to be to get similar quality.
A 480p DVD usually looks pretty crappy at CRF 18 for example and ends up needing like CRF 14-15 sometimes, where as you’ll rarely find a 1080p encode that needs more than CRF 16.5-17. Not sure why exactly it’s just how it works lol~
That’s interesting, I had read that CRF encoding was recommended now over 2 pass now. Is the idea to achieve reasonable filesize or dose 2-pass always lead to higher quality even if the bitrate is identical?

im pretty sure i read from somewhere where Dark Shikari (x264 dev) saying that CRF and 2-pass uses the exact encode method. so as long as the other settings and bitrate is the same, CRF and 2-pass will yield the same quality.
if this is true, wouldnt it make more sense to just use CRF (it only requires one pass)? or is there something else im missing?

I guess the major reason for doing it would be, being able to quickly determine a required CRF and adjust it if necessary without having to wait for an encode to finish. Also it means you can hide the CRF from other encoders lol~
The CRF value in the post isn’t the value the stats pass was calculated with, it’s an approximation of what the rate factor would be in a CRF encode. Unless you do a slow first pass with CRF (which makes the whole point of using it for 2-pass kinda dumb when you can just use CRF in the first place) you have to kinda work out how much extra bitrate you’ll need as overhead (for things like psy optimization, etc) and base the stats pass CRF value on that. The results I get from this or CRF are probably near identical, but it allows for quick adjustments where CRF doesn’t. Essentially if you approximate the stats pass CRF correctly the end result should be the same as a CRF encode.

It’ll be fixed in the batch and we’ll make a patch for that ep too.
2 pass encoding allows for slightly better prediction on direct MVs with –direct auto too. Not that anybody cares about that, though.
Hello! Will you re-encode audio/video for (some) files in 1080p batch or there will be only patches(if it’s needed)? (I want to reDL 1080p version instead 720p which I have already.)

strange i went to d.load the thing and there never seemed to be a batch. Is a batch in the works or not? I got the individual releases but its odd, the last 3 episodes have a nice font but the first 9 seem to have a kinda skinny hard to read one. Isn’t it going to be standarized?
