Fall 2011 "Plans"

Here’s where we are so far regarding our plans for the Fall 2011 season.

  • We’ll be picking up Fate/Zero as our signature Fall 2011 project (no, we don’t care if Aniplex is translating it into 8 different languages if they’re going to stream in shitty 360p). We’ll be using the Aniplex subs as a base unless they turn out to be utter shit. We’ll be using MBS caps (which air 2.5 hours later than the first airing), meaning a “delay” of 2.5 hours but also a higher quality video and audio source.
  • iM@S continues into Fall 2011, being a 2-cour show. I can only hope the team’ll find it in them to stop delaying releases for days.

…and that’s all that we can say for sure. We really don’t know what else we’ll pick up at this point in time. The only other Fall 2011 show I really wanted to do (Haganai) is oversubbed, so much of this rests on what Moshi and/or 8thsin decide to pick up, what shows end up being on-the-dot simulcasted, and whether the scheduling falls into place in terms of air times, supporting staff etc.
I guess this is also the place to mention that we’ll be switching to 10-bit x264 encodes for the Fall 2011 season (put simply, you’ll be getting better video for smaller filesizes at a small compatibility sacrifice). We’ll probably keep doing XviDs as our compatibility release, though.

…why does everyone like Haganai again? Glad to hear you’re on Fate/Zero, not that there was much doubt.

  2. Let’s start raging about 10-bit.

  3. Pick up Shakugan no Shana. It’s going to be the most popular show this season and we need a reliable source for it.

  4. nightskyland on September 29, 2011 at 4:45 am said:

pretty please pick up “guilty crown”…

  5. Shame that you wouldn’t be picking up Haganai… though you speak the truth, it will be oversubbed. How about picking up the Persona 4 adaptation instead?

  6. Rintarou on September 29, 2011 at 4:52 am said:

Look into Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon, it’s pretty hyped over in Japan and it’s looking good. The “simulcast” is also 3 days late and it’s not oversubbed.

  7. Haven’t used 10-bit before, I guess I’d better start before Fate/Zero airs.

    Fuck yeah 10bit

Any love for Persona 4 The Animation?
I’m very excited and would love to see UTW sub this.
Second preference would be Shakugan no Shana III.
    Just some suggestions 🙂

  10. haganai’s char designs looked like shit anyways IMO (love the actual artwork, but it didn’t make the move anime well at all – it worked for denpa/SHAFT but not this…) and is most def oversubbed.
As for anything else, I’d be happy with a weekly seizon picture :p (though guilty crown does look kinda neat)

  11. 10bit 😀 you have witnessed the light!

  12. can VLC player use 10-bit, and how about vuze’s HD player?

  13. Doesn’t CCCP support 10bit now? And glad to hear you guys are picking up Fate/zero! (Was kinda obvious though) If you guys are picking up anything else, would love to see Persona 4 as the one!

  14. Shana III will obviously be picked up by Static-Subs. There’s no need to waste a rare and valuable resource, top tier fansub quality, on having UTW and SS doing the same show ~again~.
As for Hi10P (more commonly known as “10 bit” or similar names), just update CCCP to the latest version. Don’t use CoreAVC, it’s shitty and by now also pretty useless, though it was quite useful in the past. DXVA is not compatible with Hi10P, so sucks to be you if you need it.
If you use MPlayer, update. CCCP is still better on Windows, though. Mac OS X users may want MPlayer OSX Extended or whatever it’s called. If you can do better than CCCP, then you don’t need me to tell you what to do.
Oh, and if you use VLC, die in a fire.

  15. The Guy, yes, as of the latest version. The issue for most people is that Hi10P is not supported by DXVA. Not that DXVA is that useful anyway; tons of x264 settings can break it.
And yeah, F/Z was pretty obvious.

  16. DaftMink on September 29, 2011 at 6:07 am said:

@Anon: You need a nightly build of VLC to support 10bit.
    @The Guy: CCCP / K-Lite / CoreAVC 3.0 all support 10bit now.

  17. That said, as for the reason I came here, which I had forgotten and just remembered…
Thanks for F/Z! You’ve been doing a great job since the beginning and I’ve come to have a high level of respect for UTW. The expectations are high! 😀 I hope you keep at it for the years to come. 🙂 But for a worry that is more earthly than the years to come, and please bear in mind that my information on simulcasts is not up to date, will you still do it if Aniplex simulcasts it in non-shitty 720p with decent scripts?

  18. Oh wow, everyone talking at the same time… Amazing.

  19. I’ve posted this in several places, thaty are going hi10p, and no one’s really repled to help, so hopefully someone here will be able to:
I’m fine with this being 10bit, but I still can’t get the compatibility right across all players for everyone using this, and it’s starting to really annoy me now.
Coalgirls separates the op’s and ed’s a lot, which is fine, but as a result, VLC media player won’t play the files, once it get’s the the op/ed it goes wrong, can this be fixed? Anything else, it seems to be fine on. I haven’t tested fully yet as only Coalgirls has been releasing on a regular basis.
MPC’s subtitles are HUGE. They also don’t use the aspect ratio of the video (16:9), and use the aspect of my screen (4:3), meaning that they apppar in the wrong places, when appearing in sreen, and in the black bar at the bottom when normal speak. Can this be fixed?
WMP, doesn’t play the files, full stop.
GOM Player, plays, you get no subs, and the picture is crap.
Can someone please tell me how I can fix at least one of these players?

  20. WOW THANK GOD UR DOING Fate/Zero yes thank you

  21. all hail 10bit

  22. Well, Fate/Zero was an obvious and definitely what I’m looking forward to. im@s… I’m more of a gamer. Even if Haganai is oversubbed, still think your version would better than most if not all. But whatever, either way, it’ll be an interesting fall.

  23. No subs like UTW. Too bad Haganai is oversubbed, would’ve been quite awesome if you subbed it.
But meh, I’m getting F/Z. That alone makes it alright.

    WHAT HAPPENED TO INDEX BDS ;___________________;

  27. EcchiSkecchi on September 29, 2011 at 7:46 am said:

    @Larnu
    I’ll walk you through.
    Uninstall everything.
    1) Try to install K-lite mega codec pack (it’s a great set of good set of codecs and will come with mpc). Some people have less issues with K-lite than CCCP.
    http://www.codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_full.htm
when installing there will be some select boxes(actually you can do it after installation in MPC option but let’s do it while we do a clean install ) .
    a) Choose EVR custom press as de default renderer (if you use in Windows 7) or VMR-7 windowed (if you are in xp). ( If you’re using the ‘wrong’ renderer this can cause you some trouble)
b)De-select the box that says to use MPC internal subtitle renderer (this is a source of big trouble if you’re using it. Most likely this shit makes you subtitles big you in some random position).
    c) D-select the box that says to use DXVA Support or something like that (that is a source of bugs and now with 10-bit will be even more buggy)
d)Optionally check that box (I think it will already be checked) that says to use static subtitles (this will make you subtitles statics and so you won’t see the karaoke being filled, etc. This is good if you are not using a core 2-duo pc or higher)
Try to play your videos in MPC. You should be perfectly fine.
If you still see things messed up, do tell me.

Thanks for picking up Fate/Zero. 🙂
Hopefully the person responsible for the Aniplex subs knows the relevant F/S terms. Not that it matters that much, since you’ll fix it in case they screw up.
Didn’t expect you to make the switch to 10bit in the fall season already. Tough luck for those of us who use XBMC to play their files. Guess it’s back to using the computer with a “normal” player software like VLC until XBMC supports it.

  32. @boingman
If it affects enough people I might consider doing a slightly later 8-bit release, but it definitely won’t be at release time due to encode time.

  33. Jellyblob on September 29, 2011 at 9:15 am said:

    FOR VLC USERS:
As DaftMink says, you need a nightly build (i.e. experimental).
Use the following link and pick whatever floats your boat out of the bottom 3.
    http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win32/last/
Just install and play as usual, pretty simple.
I’ve used it and it plays chapters, has sharper subs and can even play 10-bit (despite being an alpha), hasn’t crashed on me at all.

  34. thanks for Fate Zero!
consider to do Majikoi will you ?

  35. Thank you for anything you sub!
and please consider Last Exile 2
(the best fansub group i know subbing the continuation of the best anime i know, would be a dream come true)

  36. Oh my god Hi10p, so memochou is my last UTW, i will rest following u guys because of my shitty Notebook can’t keep up with the requirement. Maybe later if i buy another notebook, i’ll follow your release again.

  37. The anime you are considering subbing are ones I’m not going to follow. Damn. =/

  40. yo, why not try doing Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon. It’s seems pretty promising and interesting. i heard it’s a 2-cour show. Moreover i haven’t found any groups that picked up that series (well, none of i know of that is). Except for sentai filmworks since they’ve license it and they said they’ll do the subs, but still it’s much more better if it’s you moreover i think they’ll not be doing the OP/ED subs. Please sub it. Thanks

It never occurred to me that UTW might not pick up Fate/Zero, however I’m thrilled all the same.
Now, if you picked up Last Exile: Ginyoku no Fam and Hunter X Hunter, Christmas would be early this year. Still, as long as you sub Fate/Zero, and the series itself is as awesome as the novels, I’ll be a happy, happy man.

  44. Count me as one more grumble over 10 bit. I understand the quality benefits, but my two main anime watching systems both rely on DXVA to not thrash the system. Especially my laptop. AMD C-50. DXVAs beautifully. Chokes and dies on 720p without it. Maybe I’ll need to learn how to re-encode 10 to 8 myself for storage.

My entire FSN experience has been rooted in the original Japanese, and my rendering of certain terms may be different from accepted lingo; I have tried to use these “official” terms whenever possible, however.” (from Raze)

  58. boingman on September 29, 2011 at 7:12 pm said:

@ar: Maybe someone else will reencode your 10bit release, so that you don’t have to do the extra work. Of course if that does not happen and/or you’re not satisfied with it, then it would be really great if your group could release it yourself. I didn’t expect 10bit “going mainstream” until 2012, to be honest.

  59. To all complainers about 10-bit: C1e, EIST, SpeedStep and all AMD/other frequency scaling technologies are your ENEMY. Sure, you save on the electrical bill with it, but trust me, decoding 10-bit at 20% CPU usage with all of these off… it can’t get any better.

  60. SS may be doing Shakugan no Shana III but they’re the slowest group in existence right now. Nobody will follow them.

  66. @EcchiSkecchi Thanks for the info, and I’ll certainly have a look into doing this at the weekend. As I’m GMT and just got back from a 12 hour shift, I’m hardly in the mood right now though >_<
If I have any problems, I'll post again.

  67. @EcchiSkecchi Nevermind, I gave it a go, as the cats decided that they were going to keep me up. The files don’t play in WMP still, but they look and play great in MPC-HC!
Thanks for the great info and help, I really appreciate it.

  68. I hear A1 Pictures drained all their budget, effort, resources, and souls into Ep13 of iM@S’ performance..THIS SHIT CAN’T BE DELAYED GUYS OMG.

  69. Hmm 10bit? Guys, blu-ray have 10bit source? Never think of it. Or tv only?

  70. And, hmm. Video Card is in 24bit (8per channel) mode. Windows in 8bpc mode. Monitor is in 8bpc mode. What will happend to 10bit source? It will be dithered to 8bit. Possibly, I can buy nvidia quadro and true 10bit monitor (costs like hell), but, still, windows uses 8bpc mode. What will happen with 10bit content? Or maybe I’m just dumb and wheres walkaround?

You don’t understand what Hi10P does. Read this: http://x264.nl/x264/10bit_02-ateme-why_does_10bit_save_bandwidth.pdf

  75. does anyone know a media player that supports 10bit?

  76. So, does anyone know how to convert 10bit to something universally compatible?? Not kidding, I really want to know.

  77. How about Shana 3 and P4 animation? PLEASE….

  78. Sigh. WHY. Why 10 bit? Nobody should care about filesizes, and the change in quality is nowhere near percetible, if the 8bit encode is good. Yet all options to decode 10bit are heavier on the system (and a LOT heavier) than when decoding 8bit, and lots of decoders can’t even handle it…
Well, I guess I won’t be downloading your subs much longer. Maybe I could just download the script though…

  79. Leon-Gun on September 30, 2011 at 3:14 am said:

I’m fairly sure DXVA doesn’t support Hi10P right now. Anyway, unless your computer is so piss poor that it can’t run any 1080p video without relying on DXVA then you should be fine. Just download any recent codec pack that has a recent fddshow-tryouts build (only the recent ones are compatible with Hi10P) and you’ll be fine. CCCP or Klite work and they bring MPC-HC packaged with them. If not you could try running it with VLC as a last rest, or mplayer2 I think.
If none of those works then just download an SD version while you wait for them to accomodate you.

Awesome news! I was kinda getting worried that you’ll not pick it up because of Aniplex’s announcement about simulcasting Fate/Zero in NicoNico. I just hope that you don’t change your mind later like you did with Kamisama Dolls.

  87. Probably a stupid question but I feel like I must ask anyways, the new 10bit player can still play 8bit right?

  88. XBMC theoretically should be able to handle 10-bit. Just not with the default installation.
I’ve been looking into building a HTPC and with the recent transition to 10-bit, I decided to do a bit of research. Thankfully, you can configure XBMC to use an external player.
I haven’t actually built the HTPC yet, so I can’t provide support for this, but the how-to details are all in the XBMC wiki.

  89. Please sub Guilty Crown…;~;

  90. You can also get 10bit working well on XBMC by using the latest unnofficial DSPlayer build and using LAV filters until MPC’s videodec has better Hi10p support, and using an external if you have issues. Works really well most of the time.

  91. XBMC on Windows can launch MPC-HC as an external player. XBMC on Linux can launch mplayer2. XBMC-Live (OpenELEC, XBMCFreak) cannot, as it is a minimal installation to be used as an appliance.
I’ve been down the route of trying to use Windows as the basis for an HTPC with a 10-foot interface (i.e. remote control only). Nothing works without regular fiddling e.g. applications lose focus and won’t respond to the remote.
I’ve had XBMC launch MPC-HC (back when XBMC had far inferior subtitle support). It’s painfully obvious that you’ve stepped out of an appliance. The controls behave quite differently (e.g. the fast forward behaviour is very different).
I just hope that the XBMC devs realise what a big deal this is now that virtually every fansub group is only releasing 10-bit.

As a bonus, this should also include multi-threaded decoding, which might mitigate the increased load from 10-bit somewhat.

Regarding 10-bit releases, I hope UTW will also release in 8-bit, as I’m having playback issues on my WDTV, even though my laptop and desktop support 10-bit playback with no issues whatsoever.

not that it counts for anything, but Guilty Crown would be amazing

    @akinari-kun
The problem is that the current line of WDTVs are simply unable to decode 10-bit encoded files. Unfortunately, it seems to be a hardware thing, so it’s not even something that they can fix with a software update, or anything along those lines. I also have a WDTV and that’s going to be an annoyance for me as well. At this point, I’ve decided that I’m just going to have to plug my laptop into the TV or buy another tower (one specifically for playing anime) and plug that in instead if I want to watch 10-bit files on a bigger screen. I suggest you start thinking about that as an alternative as well.

First ep was solid. Fairly much faithful to the LN, lots of nice scenery, established the characters, exposition wasn’t shoved down the viewer’s throat, CG wasn’t too conspicuous, and the subs were surprisingly legit.

Not that I distrust you doing a good job or anything, but it would just, you know, feel nice to have the subs as they aired. Could be great to have both, I think.

just watched the “simul-stream” of Fate/Zero on aniplex, and they have comments on the entire episode, some times so heavy you can’t see the screen at all. Thank God for groups like UTW who will do a good job of bringing this to the english speaking populations of the internet. It’s also fairly obvious that the english translators they are employing have no familiarity with the series, as certain things were translated correctly (but not using the appropriate meaning given it’s significance in the series). I.e. “mushi” translated as insects when talking about Zouken’s worms (perhaps the biggest grate on my nerves).
But I digress from the giant wall of text. Thank you UTW in advance for the continued excellent work you will provide on these series.

sounds like butthurt. stop living in the past.

  134. Taco,
10bit is not videophile territory. It had its test run, the bugs were worked out, and compatibility is pretty widespread already (and has been for awhile now honestly). I cannot see someones machine that could play 8bit, not be able to play 10bit. That would mean that your processor was at like 85% load with 8bit h264. If that’s the case, don’t you think it’s time to upgrade? Did the high processor load not raise a red flag? Even if you’re right (which you’re not), that would NOT be middle class. I would not call someone that is 15% away from using xvid’s “middle class”; I would call you poor, rather than VERY poor. A $400 dollar desktop bought today could easily play 10bit video. If you can’t find it in you to spend that much money every 6 years, I don’t know what to say. I mean, is there nothing else you use your computer for? You can’t find a reason to upgrade the computer? I find it ironic that someone that knows how to torrent, about anime and fansubbing through the internet, and the difference between xvid and h264, doesn’t want to have an at least SEMI modern computer. It’s obvious you spend a decent amount of time on the internet, why not spend a bit of mulah to make the experience better? Oh, and to watch anime?
And don’t use the “why should I have to buy a new computer to watch anime” argument. First, I already said you could probably find other reasons to get one, anime couldn’t be the only thing you do on it. Even if it’s just for entertainment and internet use. Secondly, just USING that argument is like saying “everything should be free in life!”. The anime you watch is already free, so being able to watch free anime should also be free? Where does it end?
Now, if you’re incapable of purchasing a new computer literally, like too young, still in school, or just don’t have a job etc., that’s just tough shit. Life isn’t fair. Given this situation, it’s in YOUR hands to figure out a way to get smooth playback. Use Google. Learn about file conversion.
But I’ll be damned if you’re going to come wave that shit around fansubbers trying to hold back technology that is perfectly usable by 80% of their downloaders just because YOU don’t want to upgrade your “windows 98” machine.
    Grow up.

  135. How about doing the HunterXHunter remake? Doesn’t seem like any group apart from horriblesubs are doing it…

Funny thing is that many people have some problems with 10-bit other than “my computer sucks”. Just get your facts straight.

  146. @Leon-Gun
ar said «If it affects enough people I might consider doing a slightly later 8-bit release, but it definitely won’t be at release time due to encode time».
The question is whether ar would really might, and whether he actually thinks there’s enough people. So any new HD fan, if not Hi10P-ready, is adding oneself to the necessary quantity.
Personally I have no objections if the HD release is delayed a few days in favour of Hi10P, as long as HD release still happens nevertheless.

  147. @sdf
Unless you buy a new computer for the sole purpose of watching anime from it, the cost of upgrading is no longer about money, but rather is about a lot of free time you would loose in order to install all the necessary software: the operating system, the antivirus, the archive packers and unpackers, several web browsers, a dozen of favourite fonts, a few image browsers, a few image editors, a few dedicated reader programs for different book formats (such as PDF an DjVu), a tray clock and calendar, a web server, a set of video drivers, a set of audio drivers, a sound editor, a few icon editors, a pair of custom keyboard layouts, a set of codecs, a CD/DVD/BluRay burner program, a few dictionaties, a few file format coverters, a pair of additional system libraries (such as DirectX and .NET upgrades for Windows), a few emulators, a download manager, an editor for plain texts, an office suite, a few video and flash players, a mobile phone sync software, a DVCS of your choice (such as Git) and a few VCS (such as SVN and CVS) and GUI controls for them (such as TortoiseGit, TortoiseSVN and TortoiseCVS), a few vector graphics editors (free, such as inkscape, or commercial, such as CorelDRAW), a few IRC clients (such as mIRC or Chatzilla), an e-mail client (such as free Thunderbird or commercial TheBat), a few clipboard daemons, a few interpreters (such as PHP or Python), a few SSH clients (such as PuTTY and WinSCP), a few videophones (such as Skype, Google Talk, or a SIP client), a two-panel file manager, a system tray manager, a file exchange client or even several clients (one for torrents, one for ed2k/Kad, one for DC++, etc.), a virtual CD control panel, an audio player, a diff visualizer, a font editor, and so on.
That is what makes an upgrade decision so tough, especially if you’re knee-deep in urgent freelance work with deadlines.

Beyond the initial updates, Security-software installation, browser, codec pack, and Office (or similar), I’d say everything else is up to the user and likely to be installed as the need arises.

@Ecentric : “mushi” however does actually translated into bugs/insects.
And truth is that Zouken has a lot more than simply worms, he also happens to have crickets, flies, and all kinds of other stuff.
It might be true that worms were what generally did its work on Sakura, but when generally discussing Zouken’s insects it isn’t exactly wrong to do so.

  155. Another vote for KILL 10-BIT WITH FIRE! I have a brand-new win-7 x64 machine, and NOTHING will play 10-bit files on it. Nothing. Yes, I even tried all your suggestions (before you even made them). THe fact is, this stuff is NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME. And, from what I can tell from reading the banter of the various codec devs, it may never be. The general attitude of the developers is, “Well, I don’t like Hi-10, but people keep asking for it, so I’ll throw something together.” Hell, I don;t even think they’re debugging it.
Anyway, so, yeah – maybe YOU managed to get something to work on your machine with some bizarre incantation and a bunch of cobbled-together nonlinear unsupported bleeding edge codecs. But, more than half of us have no way to play 10-bit, no matter what we do.
It would be appreciated if you release *something* that’s 720p and 8-bit. Otherwise, I pretty much can’t watch your stuff. And, I’m not the only one.

  156. The Moondoggie on October 3, 2011 at 3:12 am said:

As I was saying in Commie and here, we all got our reasons why we can’t follow the 10bit thing encoders want.
For me, all I really need is a converter: to convert 10bit MKV to s40 MP4 format. The first time I tried with Commie’s subs, the converter got an error. This means that 8-bit and 10-bit are very different(obviously).
I would be wasting my time if I dL CCCP: I don’t watch anime on the computer. Unless of course, CCCP has plugins and components I can use to update my converter.
It’s not we have half the IQ needed to update. It’s the circumstances involved.
So to all people who hate 10bit haters: Please be patient. When a viable answer is made for people who casually watch anime, all the complains for 10bit stops too.

first if you have any other codecs installed then delete it, then try installing klite mega codec pack
Try using klite mega codec pack, it uses MPC and it support 10bit. It takes less than 5min to download and 1min to install (just standard install, no need to change the configuration or anything) and viola you have a computer capable of 10 bit video.

  159. @ghostalker: All “install my favorite codec pack” suggestions have already failed – including klite. Also, klite takes a narrow second to CCCP for the “Will force you to wipe your drive and reinstall Windows to get anything else to work again” award.

People with difficulty playing 10bit videos and doesn’t have any other means to download 8bit videos but have a powerful machines have another option thought, re-encode it themselves and revert it back to 8bit, back when klite doesn’t support 10bit yet I tried to experiment re-encoding 10bit videos to 8bit in case worst comes worst klite failed to release a codec pack that can play 10bit, I successfully converted a 10bit video to 8bit using the software called mediacoder. Of course their is no need to do that now for me.

  162. Please STOP encoding with 10bit! It breaks DXVA playback. It breaks network streamer playback (WDTV Live). It breaks phone playback. There’s all these downfalls and no real benefit. Slightly smaller files means nothing in today’s multi-terrabyte storage solutions. Yes, I can play 10bit video files on my PC but you literally broke playback on everything else and it’s just ludicrous to do it. Other groups jumped blindly on the 10bit bandwagon without putting forth any thought as to what this would do and here UTW, in some dimwitted desire to make sure their “e-penis” measures up, blindly followed suit.
Shame on you. Shame on you all.

What else will force adaptation if no one else wants to adapt it in the first place, Xvid videos only become popular in cellphones because a lot of people wants it and companies wants to exploit it. The same thing with 10bits, companies will not support it unless they found a reason that will benefit them most, and this groups who are adapting it now will make it sure that 10bits will be widely supported in the near future.
