Oh shit! We’ve finally released an episode!
Yeah, so there’s a good reason that most Shaft series don’t typically get worked on beyond what’s done while it airs on TV. They are a ton of work and finding the spare time to do a good job of it isn’t easy, but never fear! We have the courage to stall 10 more episodes!
But here’s a brief rundown of the current situation:
Episode 2 @ QC.
Episode 3 @ QC.
Episode 4 @ QC.
Episode 5 @ Typesetting.
We’ll get through the episodes as time permits, and release each episode as soon as it’s been signed off as good to go. All of us are pretty busy nowadays, and this is a side project we wanted to do, so basically weekly shows come first, then batches, and then stuff like this when we have some free time and actually feel like working on Chinese cartoons.

  1. Fantastic. Thanks for the release. But at the risk of sounding like a greedy ingrate, is there any chance you guys will do the NCOPs as well?

  2. @Anonymous
Daiz styled the dialogue, and we liked how it looked, it was easy enough to read since its mostly on black backgrounds, and it was something different. To each his own of course.

  3. Just finished watching the episode, and my god! You guys have really outdone you’re selves yet again… Who ever designed the op/ed subtitles. I love you. They’re absolutely amazing. I love the way the op sub colours change as Senjougahara passes through them, how much time did they take?

  4. @Alex
I think i spent about 10-12 hours doing the OP, because it’s in ASS format I basically had to create each unique mask for Hitagi’s shadows and then vector trace them. There was around 200-250 of them if i recall correctly. It Some required a lot of preparations work because of particles and stuff, but generally the ones without credits took around 2-3mins each.

  5. oh wow…really? Did 8thsin rise from the dead after his anime-burnout? Also, where did you guys find the time to do this? but… itsdonesothiscantbefakeamiright?
Thank y’all for this wonderful present—

  6. @Anonymous
Though after finally watching it myself, I may darken the borders a little for Episode 2 onwards, there was a few parts where the text began to blend into the background a little too much. That should give more contrast between foreground and background.

  7. @ar
Ah, then hopefully I’m not the only strange guy that collects them. Heh
And nice job on the opening subs. I think this is the only subgroup with translated lyrics that make sense all the way through. I don’t know what it is, but after that point at 6:40, every other group just has a string of words. Which I do find rather odd, considering up until that point, the translations are very similar. (Ex. Nervous when near, Staring out a window, What do you love about me)
Oh well, I have a version that makes sense now. Thanks again.

  8. I’ve seen the Commie release of this anime, I personally didn’t like the anime AT ALL. Besides some kinky dialogue, that’s all there is to it, no substance whatsoever, this anime sucks, no offense to the fans

  9. Haven’t seen Nisemonogatari yet. I’m definitely up for UTW’s subs! I will wait until the batch is released though and hope you guys finish it before the next TV season starts.

  10. Thanks so much for finding the time in your busy schedules. I look forward to the next release when you find the time once more. Thanks.

  11. Holy carp, I can’t even begin to imagine how much effort went into styling the OP!
    Thanks for that!

  12. hey guys, which group do you recommend to get bakemonogatari bd from? No over-localized subs please 😛
i gotta get ready to watch nisemonogatari.

  13. Thanks!! Like some people have said before, I’m also waiting for your release (some batch, to be precise), before watching the series =)

  14. @canzer
I suggest the ANE version. You can find it on BakaBt ( Bakemonogatari (10-bit, 1080p) [ANE] ). Lower resolutions not available, but you shouldnt want a lower quality for Bakemonogatari anyway.
You might want to check Yumi fansubs in 2013+ if they ever decide to release a better version.

  15. DUDES!
Please give an early warning next time; I nearly jizzed on my pants as soon as I opened the website! ¬¬

  16. ar, that opening was epic! Thanks for the focus on the details! You must be OCD to even attempt to produce something of that quality. 😉

  17. Oh wow. I can’t believe those are truly softsubs… Nice work! Feels good to be back to the world of epic randomness… Now if only koharubi revived to finish their bakemonogatari version…

  18. Getting a weird crashing error in the OP with mplayer2 on OSX – never seen this with any of your encodes before. Did you change something?

  19. Can we at least get some kind os news about Fate/Zero S2 BD’s? Are you guys working on them? I can wait, but I haven’t heard a word about it from you guys…

  20. Video quality and typesetting was great on this, not to mention DAT KARA FX!. I hope you keep em EPs coming quick guys, because I’m gonna archive your releases for Nisemono! Thanks for the awesomeness!

  21. @fifthrider What line does it crash on? I had an issue where Media player classic would freeze and required a force shutdown on the line “Am I still the same person you fell in love with or not” Turns out It was a problem with my version of xy-VSFilter, I updated it and the problem went away. Make sure you’re using xy-VSFilter and make sure it’s up to date.

  22. Thankyou. I’ve put off watching this when it originally aired, I’ve waited. Waited so long until I completely forgot about it.
    Today is a good day.

  23. Me too, I’m trying to hardsub it, and x264 crashes at about 23% (I’ve tried a few times, and updated my x264 too).

  24. First of all, belated thanks for posting about getting xy-VSFilter – that cleared up the problems I was having with media player classic.
I can’t decide who’s taking more drugs – Shinbou in creating the Nisemonogatari anime or you guys for translating and typesetting every single book title. It was glorious; I hope you can keep this level of quality up throughout the whole series without going crazy.

  25. @alex – that’s precisely the line! Trouble is, xy-VSFilter is an MPC-only (that is, Windows-only) concern. I probably am going to need a new compile of mplayer2 to fix this, which, given what a pain in the ass it is to compile software on OSX, (dependency hell much?) is probably going to take a while.
Bizarrely, though, the July cycle of XBMC12 *is* able to play the file, albeit with a framerate hit in the credits. I don’t even…

  26. Damn it UTW, those karaoke killed my AMD A8 3870K with CCCP on defaults!
But ther are pretty – well done!
Installing xy-VSFilter fixed the issue anyway.
Once again, that OP is really great.
    Thank you

  27. Yeah; that about confirms it: newer (standalone) builds of mplayer2 can play it just fine. Here’s praying that Stefano Pigozzi releases another MPlayer OSX Extended-compatible binary package sometime soon, I guess.

  28. The ED typesetting changing colors just like the animation looked pretty cool, thank you for the great release

  29. @foo
If you copy a recent xy-vsfilter vsfilter.dll to your Avisynth Plugins dir, it should hardsub no problems. The crashes are due to old vsfilter memory cache issues (not freeing memory) which were resolved in xy-vsfilter.

  30. Hope you guys finish this. I’ve been waiting for bd’s and it seems no 1 is even trying to sub this… You have my thanks ;*

  31. @piezo
Yeah. Basically, import the frame into Corel Photo Paint, create a mask from color range, touch it up to remove credits/particles if necessary, feather it, then save it and import it into Corel Draw. Vector trace it as a binary mask (black/white only) disposing of either the black or white and then smooth the resulting curves and convert. Not all that hard, just time consuming.

  32. @Zephiel
Come back in 2-3 weeks and ask >_>
Fate/Zero BDs come first, and we’ve hardly got any time to get to those.

  33. hey, sorry to bother you, but i have the xy-vsfilter installed and its been working quite fine for a while but during the OP of this episode everything starts to lag around the time when Senjougahara and the background turn yellow (about 6:35). im not sure why everything just lags but i cant seem to fix it, any advice?

  34. @cking543 I have the same problem o-o but uhh when I tried potplayer it works out fine but still laggy and it crashes midway QQ Must be our shitty computer and or laptop.

  35. @cking543 Did you make sure xy-vsfilter was updated? I had the same problem with an outdated version and the problem went away after updating. Also the 1080p copy would be very hardware intensive especially during the opening, so if you think your hardware may struggle with 1080p content at all, this could be the issue.

  36. @ar
I noticed at 6:17 the “u” in “you” on the bottom moves to the right. I’m not sure if that is on purpose but i thought i’d mention it in case it was a small mistake.

  37. Sorry then, I have no idea. All I can say is Reinstall all of it, while making sure everything is up to date and hope that that solves your problem. Are you using the full screen exclusive mode of MadVR?

  38. Yaayy…. i’ll see more of Hitagi now. 😀
Too bad she doesn’t have much of a screen time in this one.
Also i am hoping that there won’t be a v2 for this since my slow net connection doesn’t exactly give me the luxury of downloading the same episode twice.
    Making sure before downloading this.

  39. @aGuillt
Um. We are using the Crunchyroll scripts as a base for the dialogue, and tlc’ing/editing them. But everything else is our own yes.

  40. When Raze has free time to QC. Fate/Zero Season II BDs are higher priority than this, so once we’ve released those we’ll go back to releasing this, unless Raze finds time inbetween to get an episode QCd.

  41. Well as long as you guys are willing to finish this BD batch soon. I’m willing to wait as long as you don’t drop this anime project. Thanks in advance and good luck.

  42. I actually didn’t watch this when it aired when you guys said you’d just do the blu rays. Will be waiting eagerly :'(

  43. Stop trying to make UTW feel bad, ‘H’ and whomever else. The fact that it probably won’t work aside, they have no reason to feel bad. They are providing us all with a free service, and are entitled to do so at whatever pace is feasible/desirable. UTW clearly stated that the episodes will be released as time permits, so there is no time commitment.
If you don’t want to wait, the TV version is out there. If you do want to wait, like I do, do so in silence (unless you’re offering words of thanks, or asking about the time frame in a polite manner).

  44. You sir are a gentleman. :> We would like to see if we can release 2-5 or 6 during the xmas break, but no promises because Fate/Zero has to be finished first.

  45. I… didn’t complain? Was saying I’d rather watch their blu rays when they come out than watch it now because I believe I’ll enjoy UTWs release so much more that it’d warrant the wait and that I’ll continue to wait with anticipation. From the first page of comments, I can’t actually see anyone whining or saying anything other showing their thanks, showing their interest in the release or asking a question politely. In doesn’t bother me when they release the next episode or two anyway since I won’t be watching it until they’re all out which will be a long while anyway. However, I understand how you may have misinterpreted my comment and how this may have given you the impression that a larger number of the people posting here may be doing so negatively. Complaining would be retarded anyway, because beside being a free service it also takes up a stupid amount of time along with other projects and if anyone didn’t understand that, they weren’t worth wasting time to tell off anyway.

  46. Your karaoke is INSANE. Must have taken hours or days. Can’t wait for more episodes. Your encode is great too.
