Here’s our first offering for the Fall 2012 season!
Thanks go to lygerzero0zero of Evetaku Fansubs for graciously assisting us with the translations of terminology in this series. fnord also deserves special mention for spending hours on end working on this episode and pulling the team together.
With any luck, we should be back to a speedsub schedule with this show next week (assuming Crunchyroll isn’t simulcasting with the CS-Asahi airing).
EDIT: It seems people are wondering about our translation for “Cantus”, so I figured I’d give a brief explanation of the term.
The original Japanese for Cantus is 呪力, literally “incantation/spell power”, and is the psychokinetic/magic power the people in this world use. Our translation for the term is derived from the incantation part of the word (interestingly, while 呪 can mean “curse”, it would be wrong here because the power isn’t a curse/bad thing, nor does it curse things. It’s one of those “a word can have multiple meanings but it means this in context” kinds of things). It’s not exactly a self-apparent translation, but it preserves the spirit of the original term and sounds fancy too.

    Thanks, but don’t drop this show, and why would Crunchyroll use the CS-Asahi airing, when TV-Asahi airs on the same day?

  9. Fuck, I already downloaded Commie’s version with fuckballed encoding.

  10. Thanks! 😀

  11. Normally, I would have watched it raw or watched it with the first subs that comes out with because it’s a series that I’m really looking forward! But since I know utw is going to sub it, I’m going to wait! 🙂

    Thanks, guys.
    Waiting warmly for 480.

  22. My, that sure is some aggressive banding. Yet the encode and subs are still better than the alternatives currently out there. Thanks.

    Yes! I wasn’t sure if I was gonna watch this series. But after seeing the first episode, I’m definitely following it for now. Hope you guys keep subbing, I know I am always willing to wait the extra hours for UTW quality subs.
    Keep up the good work.

  24. anonymous on September 30, 2012 at 4:22 pm said:

    That was good.

  25. I usually wait for fansubs if they are within the same day. But you guys have way ahead from most other speedsubs comparing the quality at least. Hopefully I will be watching UTW releases instead of CR rips. Thanks for the subs. 🙂

    All right! Thanks so much for the episode! Here’s hoping you guys have smooth sailing with this series! YOUR SUBS ROCK, AFTER ALL!

    WOW this anime is incredible thanks UTW!

  28. Commie’s subs sound more accurate and natural, but your encode is nicer.
    Hate having to choose

    >Thanks go to lygerzero0zero of Evetaku Fansubs for graciously assisting us with the translations of terminology in this series.
    It would have been nice to put the same amount of effort in AW, instead of fuck up terminology like Enhaced Armament (Reinforced Exterior) or Disaster Armor (Armor of Calamity).
    Well, I guess that’s why you aren’t working in AW’s BD, you just don’t give a fuck.

  32. I feel so lost on the first episode….oh well hopefully the next episode will be a bit better. Thanks again for your hard work you guys 🙂

  33. alex0714 on September 30, 2012 at 7:06 pm said:

    Fuck yeah thanks UTW 😀

  34. This show looks like it will be really interesting and I’m totally getting a ‘the Village’ vibe from this. I really want to try an English translation of the novel this was based off of.

  35. @david
    > I do not like this show. Too much shinto/buddhism. That ruined the show for me.
    Have fun avoiding watching Japanese culture in Japanese media. 😛

  36. I don’t know where else to ask this. Have you guys changed something about the site (I know the layout is slightly different), because I can’t access it on my home computer. Whenever I tried, it would immediately say “problem loading page” and my anti-virus would act. Malwarebytes PRO would IP block would pop-up saying it blocked a outgoing connection to a potentially unwanted site, under the process of avastsvc.exe. I use AVast too. It’s the same IP address every time too (213.186.33.17). I scanned my computer and everything seems okay so I was wondering what was going on?

  37. @ghli
    wait…why are you using two live anti-virus programs? That tends to cause problems on computers. Since Avast is free Uninstall it, reboot, and see if you still have problems. I’m not having any problems with the site at least.

    Funny how you and Commie always pick some of the same shows to sub. Assuming your typeface isn’t shit (like it was for Accel World), I’ll be rooting for you!

  41. Sarreq Teryx on October 1, 2012 at 2:34 am said:

    strictly speaking “cantus” is Latin for “to sing”, but it is also appropriate to use it when referring to magic as well, as many societies regarded song as witchery and spell casting.

  42. @ Sarreq Teryx
    Yeah, that was our (or rather, lyger’s) basis for the term (we like our foreign languages, haha).

    The intro made me think “WTF IS THIS” people dying here and there.
    When it was done I was thinking. “WTH did i just watch” didnt match the intro for a second.
    Made no sense at all.
    And those old men in the temple, I was gettng they are gonna rape her vibes.
    Dont know what to make of this show yet!

  47. over_seer on October 1, 2012 at 3:36 am said:

    Shouldn’t it be “Goin’ Home” and not “Going Home” at 1:34? i.e. the song adapted from the main part of Dvořák New World Symphony’s second movement (Largo), which is the music playing during that scene. omg they so clever with -two- references there. Actually, I’m sick of hearing that part. Talk about overused.
    For that matter, the common style is for song titles to get quotation marks even in subs, right?
    Anyway, looks kind of interesting. Thanks for the ep.

  48. Wow. that was awesome. Gave the creepy vibs, so I’m hoping this will be good. Love the opening!

    First impressions:
    1. First scenes remind me of Elfen Lied;
    2. The character’s eyes in this anime are so freaking kawaii;
    3. Totally lost in the story line, which means that I’m deadly curious what was that all about;
    4. AWESOME ending song.

  50. lygerzero0zero on October 1, 2012 at 5:46 am said:

    @over_seer: I’ve seen it written both ways. I thought the extra vernacular would just be distracting, so I opted for the standard English version.

    I don’t understand a thing about this show, but since UTW subbing it, must watch.

    Well, it looks like it has some potential for being interesting.
    Still, why the &#$@! must everything in Japan be forced into a high school setting? Apparently, you can go a thousand years into the future, have all modern technology and societies collapse, but we’re still going to be stuck with the same system and the same cliches that come with it.

  53. CR updated the page:
    http://www.crunchyroll.com/shin-sekai-yori-from-the-new-world
    >Simulcast on Tuesdays 9:40pm CEST
    So I assume you’ll keep subbing it?

  54. thank you
    im happy that utw will sub it…

  55. Charkelle on October 1, 2012 at 6:14 pm said:

    Well, I hadn’t really looked into fall anime yet, but I saw UTW subbing this so I decided to give it a try. I don’t have much of a clue about what’s going on in this anime yet, but it’s definitely got me interested. There are a lot of things that don’t make much sense in the first episode, but that’s mainly due to a lack of information, and they gave enough hints (I managed to piece together the basics of the setting with no prior information, at least) that we will likely be getting some explanations in the future.

  56. Guys, I saw your list of projects and read that if CR is simulcasting then you’ll drop this?
    http://www.crunchyroll.com/lineup
    So what’s you plan now?

  57. diegolg on October 2, 2012 at 2:32 am said:

    Does anyone know if this would be 12 or 24 episodes long? In MyAnimeList the number of episodes is set as unknown.

  58. It’s 25 episodes long. 9 blu-ray volumes with 1 episode on the first volume, and 3 per volume for the other 8.

  59. Dr. Pepper on October 2, 2012 at 8:04 am said:

    Why use “Going Home” when no one is singing it? That was my only gripe from the first episode. I think you should have just stuck with “From the New World” for the piece. Thanks for your awesome work, guys!

  60. diegolg on October 2, 2012 at 8:14 am said:

    @ar, thanks!

  61. So apparently TV asahi aired a totally different ED than the CS broadcast.
    http://0taku.livedoor.biz/archives/4305317.html
    V2?

  62. Nope. We aren’t going to sub the same episode twice because the first broadcaster aired it before the ED was finished and a later broadcast contained it. Such is life.

    Whoa, sick, Nisemonogatari EP01 tomorrow, 8thsin is back, is this reality?

  64. @ar, Are you guys gonna continue this series? Crunchy is simulcasting it? I want to know if you’re gonna continue subbing this coz I know what subbing group will I be downloading for this series.

  65. Danuchiha99 on October 3, 2012 at 12:44 am said:

    @ashes
    Crunchyroll is using the TV-Asahi release, which came out today (or the terrestial version, as UTW calls it), UTW is using the CS-Asahi version, ED may be different but no one cares.

    Does anyone know the classical song that’s playing in the very beginning? I’ve heard it before, but I can’t remember what it’s name is.

  68. Yeah…the classical music! I want to know as well. I think it is some Czech author but I can’t put my finger on it. Btw: Great work, guys! I hope you won’t drop this one.

  69. I’m so great, I knew I’ve heard it already. It’s Antonín Dvořák – symfonie č. 9, Z nového světa, 2. věta (try to google it or youtube it). In english the name of the song is From the new world 🙂

  70. Those characters (呪力) they used for the term may indicate that the abilities they have may be indeed a curse, whether in nature or perhaps its origins or something… I find a lot of them like to make use of word meanings etc a lot most of the time o_o.
    Looking forward to seeing what happens next, creepy/mysterious/awesome start by the looks of it.

  71. confused430 on October 3, 2012 at 8:21 pm said:

    O i meant right in the beginning when everything is just going to hell.

  72. Thanks! (^^)

  73. I just wanted to say that I think “Cantus” is an inspired choice for translating 「 呪力」. I was following both the UTW and Aidoru translations for a long time (I use anime partly as Japanese language study material), and although there were occasionally things I preferred in the Aidoru translations, by and large I preferred yours. Aidoru has now fallen behind several episodes, so I’m very grateful to you all for keeping up. (Posted after episode 19.)
