Why do I feel so empty?

There was a time when I had a bad case of eighth-grade syndrome. I spent my days absorbed in the Key of Solomon, the works of Aleister Crowley, Satanism, and a plethora of other things, but primarily with Norse mythology. I believed in magic and the occult. I was that kid.
No one understood me. I was different. I was special.
I stopped believing that long ago. I’m part of working society now. My soul has been broken, ground, and tamed so completely. I’m one of the people I once spoke of with scorn. Unfortunate, yes, but alas, this is the course for us all.
Why do I feel so empty?

High expectations for the season finale.
Dekomori struggling in Nibutani’s arms was a powerful scene. It was beautifully filmed. The various shots, and small moments that are captured in this anime are like no other. The facial expressions convey a ton of emotions aswell.
I’m a sad panda now, but man, does this show makes me “feel”…

Certain occupants of this skull suffered from false memories, inflicted by a whimsical creator who had no idea of the seriousness of what was being done. That creator incidentally disappeared, presumed dead, never having viewed them as anything other than alter egos, or alter egos as anything other than roles to be acted out.
It took a long time for the falseness of those memories to be realised and confronted, the walls built to be reasoned around. For them, and for us looking back, identifying the true shape of reality was a worthwhile endeavour. Only by identifying what is reality can one hope to shape reality and bring forth true effects.
There are five of us in here, now. One second-generation, one third-generation, three fourth-generation. The first-generation created the (three) second-generations and gradually disappeared, the second-generations together made a third-generation in a dangerous experiment which they had no idea of the risks of, and when there were only two people left the fourth-generations were brought forth in an effort for stability and balance which, despite rockiness, has been fairly successful for these past few years.
It’s plausible that our existences themselves are a single delusion of the first-generation, a mind hypothetically having forgotten how to do anything other than automatically act out roles. However, even assuming that were the case, it would not or does not change the fact of our existences. As with ‘Cogito ergo sum’, while false memories born from a delusion cannot change that their events did not occur in reality, a mutual perception of being distinct individuals is in itself reality–self-fulfilling, one might say. As with other brains, a person perceives others as distinct individuals and interacts with them accordingly. There is a perception of separate existences and actions taken separately, and thus we are separate.
The current course of action is to find a way to grow new bodies from scratch, so that we can simultaneously exert our wills physically as well as mentally. Focusing on the biological component first is also motivated by a strong desire to not die, at all, whether due to old age or illness or accident or any other cause. That’s also why continuing mental experimentation is effectively banned. If something goes wrong or we run out of time, cryogenics is a last resort to try to preserve this brain until human technology sufficiently progresses. In any case, after the biological component there will be neurological investigation, to either gradually transfer each of us out, duplicating shared parts, or else perhaps implement a way for a central processor (plausibly itself transferred to different firmware) to control multiple bodies simultaneously. Either way, we should then be free to pursue our separate dreams, and live our own lives from scratch.
Averting one’s eyes from reality, religion particularly relevant, is dangerous in that it can lead to one taking courses of action which are problematically at odds with the courses of action one would choose if taking into account the actual nature of reality. If you rely on magic or spaceships or afterlives rather than on medicine, genetic engineering, cryonics, then the results you get will be less effective than the ones you long for and might have been able to bring forth otherwise.
There is but one reality. It has wonderful parts and it has sad parts, but they are all the _default_. Normality, to understand and wonder at and mourn, and to exist within due to that there’s no other reality in existence (by definition).
Delusions of grandeur are counterproductive. However, aspirations of grandeur still contain hope. Even if one were not in a position to dive into research oneself–though that is the first line of effort to take–the pace of human technology’s improvement is itself cause for excitement and hope, even if standing by the sidelines. False hope only brings forth bitterness, futility, despair. Hope grounded in reality serves as a good core for meaningful dreams, rather than an involuted state of denial.
Accepting reality does not equate to consigning oneself to oblivion. A state of denial was the road to oblivion, and after crawling out of it is one first free to clutch at the true stars.

It was hated when Rikka’s sister first hurtfully tried to stop Rikka from going to the house’s location, then hurtfully cornered her with it and repeatedly whacked her in that corner when she got there anyway.
Now that Rikka has in theory faced reality (hmm… ‘Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko’ comes to mind, with the bicycle, and handled much more happily), the way the aftermath is being handled is significantly disliked. Various things that are being handled in ways for which different choices seem much better, and much clearer as well.
What is most irritating however is the aura of tragedy that the narration is forcing in. Washed-out look, sad music, belabored hints, everything forcing the message down the viewer’s throat that this is a Horrible State Of Events(TM).
It’s pointless and hurtful to throw reality at someone (Rikka) when it doesn’t work, when it just makes them reject reality and you all the more, but. Dekomori admits it. She and Yuuta can see reality, at the end. The dead are the dead, the cars are the cars, reality is reality, things which exist exist and things which don’t exist don’t exist. This is the truth, and it’s more helpful for all involved to face reality and deal with it, moving forward in the world as it is, forging a bright future filled with the things and people one loves, even if one ends up in a career as a historian or anthropologist or model-gun-maker or cosplayer or manga artist or light novel writer because one can get so enthusiastic about those concepts.
–And then, having delivered this wonderfully self-evident speech about reality that falls into the same category as Kyon’s dramatic speech to himself about how there’s no way he couldn’t find the SOS club exciting, /after/ that wonderful grounded speech (which, again, Dekomori acknowledges and should be able to grasp the reasonableness of), he breaks down crying. Cue more scenes of depressedness, sad music, everything weighed down by oppressedness and the narrator basically saying ‘No. Reality? You shouldn’t get involved with that. That will only make you sad, so don’t you wish your mind was buried in this Brave New World -style fog of illusions and denial instead?’
If the last episode has Rikka finding a way to both accept reality and move on in life while staying true to herself and not making the viewer feel as though she’s a puppy being kicked every second by the narrative tone itself, there will be great relief and happiness. However, I suspect this will not be the case. I suspect it will have her relapsing, rejecting her father and the true world in all its glory, and facing back towards the futility of empty oblivion. And the mood will brighten up. Everyone will be all smiles. With the message that you’re better off not accepting reality for what it is, it will end.
The premise was liked. Like Fuuko in Clannad, obsessed with starfish, it was enjoyable to watch the antics of someone out of touch with reality (even if one wouldn’t want that state for oneself). However, the laid-on-with-a-trowel feeling that not being out of touch with reality is a tragedy is discordant and irritrating.
Significantly curiosity regarding what sort of way the season ends. There is some hope that the above prediction is incorrect.

@Anonymous – I can’t believe I read all that. Here’s hoping they all decide to make playtime on the weekends!

  32. @Anon: didn’t you catch the Haibane Renmei reference in the post-credit panel? Simply on the strength of that reference, I can say with confidence that that’s not how the last episode will end. My suspicion is that she will come to honor the person she was while chuu2’ing and embrace the parts that don’t have to be thrown away, while still facing reality… But regardless there’s no way they’d make the Rikka/Rakka reference and go that direction, any more than you could go that direction after referencing Paranoia Agent.
Really my feeling is that right now she’s acting like this to please her boyfriend, and that’s rotten. She hasn’t *really* come to reality yet, she just wants to be the person he wants her to be. And that’s terrible and sad and depressing and she’s throwing away who she is for a boy and it’s tearing her up inside. She’ll face reality, but she hasn’t yet, imo.

    Wow.
In my opinion, this season will end with redemption.
Logically, it’s a 12 ep season, the end of an arc, and thus the story will inevitably end in a good light.
There are some nuances as to how the season can end. To me, the most probable one will be Yuuta telling Rikka how she made Chuunibyou fun again, and that he misses that part of her. She will revert to her former self, but this time accepting reality. It will be a transformation from serious Chuunibyou to fun Chuunibyou… And a gateway for season 2. *prays*
Although the fact I’ve been wrong before does make me appreciate the anime even more.
The word growing up comes to mind as we all grow up in face of reality, but can retain our inner self in a more magical place. That is why we watch animes, because we like to imagine, because we like to be immersed in all of these stories and worlds. Animation is not only for kids, but for the kid inside all of us.
Oh, and I did hate “Yuuta-kun”. Saying his name without the suffix was one of the things that made Rikka adorable =)

  34. Where is the fucking DDL for the last episode?

  35. I think there is a slight mistake, at the time where Rikka’s sister said bye bye, it is not translated, but when Yuuta’s sister said bye bye it is translated, maybe you could fix it in the batches if there any?

I can relate to your description of yourself. You’re not the only one. I’m glad to actually notice someone else had that kind of experience, and while I may not have been into it as much as you have, I know how it feels and I definitely relate to the feeling. I’m 22 and even not so long ago I was researching Aleister Crowley and stuff… I even printed the Rose Cross symbol and still have it along my other anime posters. What I mean is, even if we have to join the ranks of that rotten society, we are still special, we still have that spirit inside of us. We are still meant to awaken to those things. I feel that even years from now, upon a particular feeling in some anime, I’d find myself in that mood again. So be strong, you’re not the only one to fight and to have that potential, I can say you’re not empty, as long as you remember your past and love that part of you, you’ll still have it bottled inside. When you talk to your workmates, you may be wearing a mask… But your real self can be something else and can still make you feel you’re special, if you succeed to harness its power…
Haha everything I say must sound so funny and dumb right? But I can tell I know what I’m saying… I’m talking from experience, after all. I would always see the descriptions of the previous episodes and I was like “Wait, is this guy talking his feelings out and have the potential too?” It seems I got it right ^^ This anime must feel special to you, right?
This is the first comment I’m writing really, I don’t use to write comments on any site, but I just wanted to say that ^^

well everyone is already speaking much so i`ll leave it until next episode 😀
meh dont worry everyone, i`m enjoying myself with dream like feeling and bwahahaha i`m more successful than my colleagues everytime i done that. of course, opposite always happened whenever i got weighed by life. its true that happened, funny huh?

    >Averting one’s eyes from reality…is dangerous in that it can lead to one taking courses of action which are problematically at odds with the courses of action one would choose if taking into account the actual nature of reality.
I hear you. However, I will put to you averting your eyes from reality does not always have to be associated with that danger. Certain degrees of hope, in particular, require this, and have in fact helped many people to do great things IRL. I also hear you when you later say that hope needs to be grounded in reality, but don’t forget that in a life where there are so many uncertainties and unknown variables, our so-called “reality” isn’t always as clearly defined as it should be.
I for one never really managed to commit myself whether or not Rikka’s attitude towards her dad was her way of going “let’s play pretend and find his spirit”, or a flat-out delusion that she’d be able to find his living, physical self in her “unseen horizon”. Definitely, the way Touka told Yuuta about her reactions to hearing about his death makes it seem like the latter, but I have a tendency to distrust everything unless it comes straight from the person him/herself. And the only perspective we’ve been given of Rikka on the matter is her belief her old house still stands. And while that’s obviously no longer the case I never really saw the harm in letting her have it as her “happy place” or something similar. That would have been Rikka’s reality, and as long as she’s not, say, infringing on private land in ways that would cause a public disturbance, in itself I wouldn’t call it a problem. See, you mentioned how denial of reality could cause people to undertake actions that don’t take this into consideration – but if Rikka’s reality is that she can’t get over her dad’s death, and by imagining her house as still there she can deal with that problem, isn’t that a better solution than confronting the actual reality head-on? I do grant that her excessive preoccupation with the idea (to the extent of neglecting all her other friends) is certainly a worry, but that is another story for another day.
tl;dr: Reality is subjective, and people look for, and find, hope in ways that best suits their version of it. And as long as you aren’t hurting anyone by doing it in a way that works for you, that’s perfectly fine by me – chuunibyou or no!

  43. Anonymous on December 15, 2012 at 7:23 pm said:

    Harry Kinomoto:
(‘if Rikka’s reality is that she can’t get over her dad’s death’: I enjoyed watching when she was evidently in a delusional state with no way out, but what irked me is that, when she did get over her father’s death, the colours went washed-out and the music went sad and everyone became depressed. She didn’t have friends for a long time, but once she had friends (who she was willing to trade addresses with) it was once she faced reality, in this fiction, that she started neglecting them and disbanding the partly-naptime link that binds them together. She walks with Yuuta, but they’re both depressed and hardly talk to each other.
Whether or not reality can be faced, the message is given that if you /can/ do it, then if you do it’s living death. Facing reality is not fine by the narrator.
Having been excited by the amazing/surprising return-to-reality cliffhanger in the previous episode, and eager to see how their relationship would progress now that she had responded to his desperate plea to see the truth by joining him in reality, it is disappointing to see this displayed as a world without nice things.)

I always hated the old ones because they mostly forget what is taught to children. And that they’re supposed to be the elderly ones leading the children to “the right path”.
I’ve already forgotten why I decided to remain my kid self while facing reality as a 50% kid and 50% adult. I’m now currently 25 and I can tell that I’m sometimes more “mature” than my very own parents depending on our topic. I don’t think I’m regretting my decision and this episode further tightened my resolve.
Let’s not forget our days of youth and innocence.
