Bit of a late release again, you know how life is unpredictable. I really hope we will get the new ED next week. Seeing as how the single is out 1/25, it couldn’t be much later. I’m kind of afraid they will make Hanakana sing something outside her unspectacular range and the song will be meh, but we won’t know until we hear it.
Raze says: I must apologize for this late release. I’ve been suffering from a rather severe hangover all day and couldn’t concentrate at all this morning.

I don’t think the new ED will start until the new arc, which is slated to begin in ep17. So two more weeks?

I see from your status bar on the right that I can expect Fate/Zero BD’s soon. Makes me so damn happy! ^^ Also looking forward to your Nisemonogatari BD’s and Ano Hana BD’s whenever they will be out. I assume 8thSin’s fixes for Ano Hana will be in the BD batch as well? Btw, you say Ano Hana BD’s are at THORA, but the show is not listed as a project on their site anywhere. :-/

THE PLOT THICKENS!
Thanks so much for the episode! NIGHT!

16. Blegh. Queerat episodes are the worst. =\ I want to know more about Saki, Satoru’s grandmother, Maria, and the human village. I don’t really care about Squealer or (spoiler? you could kind of see this coming long before Episode 15 …)
the queerats’ desire to replace humanity as the new dominant civilized race of the planet.
17. I’m with Tal, I think that this show is at its best when exploring the horrifyingly rationalized behavior of their post-human society… Also, this episode felt kinda cheap, animation/art-wise. That said, the past couple episodes more than make up for this one being weaker…

Thanks, UTW!
I’ll agree the episode was not that exciting, but it IS terribly foreboding.
If the queerats can overthrow their own queen, then no authority figure is safe from rebellion, and Satoru is quite right to be uneasy. Saki’s question about whether they could do the same procedure on a human also feels like some kind of ominous foreshadowing. After all, they didn’t kill the queen, they subjugated and continue to use her. And Squealer seems adept at manipulating humans for his own purposes.
You gotta wonder which brilliant scientist thought it was a good idea to commission the queerats to kill the “gods” they’re supposed to revere. That’s almost as big a mistake as the total non-violence conditioning that leaves them defenseless against other humans.

In backwards order of length:

A very interesting episode! Thank you! *great happiness*
Significantly intrigued by the trend of the bakenezumi, and particularly pleased by the minoshiro-modoki suspicion.
(I also note the ‘receiving a new name along with a rise in station’ as taken more-or-less directly from the Japanese feudal era, along with certain clothing and armor.)

Some eye-rolling at Maria’s note’s words in the preview. “I actually wanted to go witth you[… but then I decided not to.]” “[You two could have gone back with a consistent story and just aiming to reintegrate safely, but I decided to send you back to put your lives on the line arguing for and fighting for us to secure our survival, then come back all the way through this inclement weather for learn it was all meaningless.]” Grr.

Regarding the Queen situation (regardless of the initial reaction to unfamiliarity), both Satoru and Saki are callous, and Saki is condescending. (I may be influenced by my theory that the bakenezumi are what became of the non-esper humans.) Let’s put this in modern-human terms.
You (officially at least) dearly love your mother, but she has gradually become more and more irrational and violent. Her importance to her has made you hesitate, but in that time she has gone so far as to kill, not just hurt, several of your older siblings. Yourself aside, what can you do to protect your younger siblings? Though painful, eventually you act: you call out to adults for help, and the lives of yourself and your younger siblings are secured, and your mother is confined to a mental institution.
Satoru is furious and horrified that you could do such a horrible thing. Saki tries to soothe him with the line “They’re just children, they don’t know any better.”.
So. What is her ‘knowing better’? Doing nothing, while your mother descends further into madness, kills your younger siblings after you, and eventually dies by herself? Cutting her throat in the night, then starving to death with your younger siblings with no hope or future? How dare they casually condemn the choice made, when the only other two choices are so much more monstrous!?
(How can she try to excuse a choice with the chooser not being human, when the choice is the best choice that a human could choose in the same circumstances and does not need to be excused in the first place..!)

@Anonymous – I distrust Squealer’s storytelling. Your “mad mother” analogy is a little weakened by the idea that, according to him, “all colonies were dealing with the same problem” of “insane” queens. They don’t seem particularly mobile after all, and probably weren’t rampaging through the colonies eating everyone in sight, so I wonder about the nature of the union’s “negotiations.” It’s also suspicious that the honorable Giant Hornet clan hasn’t joined the “coalition,” don’t you think?
I suspect that Squealer and pals have probably read the centuries-old story of the Emperor of Merciful Light’s overthrow, and the Queen(s) probably objected to a re-enactment, so had to be deposed. Saki’s comment makes me think they might also be trying to develop a lobotomized human nuclear weapon for the real war they’re planning.

@man00ver – A very good point! The narration is indeed significantly unreliable. That said, it’s not hard to imagine that there would be resistance to the implementation of democratic (or more drastic) ideals, which in themselves are arguably worth seeking while retaining reproductive capabilities (by means necessary…).

Here, I’m suddenly reminded of the human civilation’s position of hunting down (and neutralising) anyone who tries to leave as a threat. In the same way that the ability to maybe kill everyone by turning into an Akki (and coming back) is too big a threat for the humans to leave alone/uncontrolled, the ability to doom a colony to childless destruction is too big a threat for the bakenezumi to leave alone/uncontrolled. Where there is insuficient cooperation, there then follows force. Hmm.
The lobotomised human weapon envisioned by Saki would be very pleasant (in a certain sense) to observe. Very unpleasant in Planet of the Apes or the Cuckoo’s Nest fiction, but more interesting (and for that matter reasonable) when done to gain control over inherent power that the subject has. …Kurau Phantom Memory now also comes to mind. Disturbing, /but/ understandable…
|
Well, when communication and peaceful coexistence is actually possible (as with the Kurau case, and with humans?), such an act (even if out of fear) becomes a clear-cut act of hostility and places the doer firmly on the wrong side of the moral high ground. Then again, from the bakenezumi’s perspective, most the humans they deal with are not necessarily any more understanding or non-cruel than the Queen… Crest/Banner of the Stars also comes to mind, with the destruction of the mother station out of fear being an inherited shame/sin.
|
Seeking control (by humans) over humans who want to leave has the argument that they could turn into Akki, and so ‘communication’ has no bearing on the threat…
|
In any case, acting on fear alone against a non-hostile other side is fairly-absolutely unethical… the question being that of when the other side counts as suficiently hostile to justify violent measures… hmmm.
Pleasant/Entertaining/Interesting to contemplate/{think about}.

23. This anime is (still) amazing. Thanks for your continued work on the series, UTW!
