And we’re back to having no OP again we have a “new” ED, like they promised.
Twelve years have passed since we last saw Saki, but her curves are just as nice as ever. Tensions run high in this episode, though it’s a relatively heavy one in terms of material to digest.
See you next week!

  11. Any one think the ED sounds like the Maoyuu Maou Yuusha, but without the singing? And the thing I’m talking about in Maoyuu is neither the OP or ED, it’s just a piano thing…

can you tell me what method UTW is using in making SD versions of their releases? I’m using this method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vozHyTCrLro — but unlucky, I can’t fix the “audio out of sync problem”
please, I just wan’t to know how they do it. if there is a link for a tutorial on how to do it, please give it to me by replying in my comment…

I’m glad to see the plot moving forward, however, I’m a little worried about the time skip, considering one of the key points about SSY was the whole kids fucking around , and fucking themselves.
We live in sad times indeed.

Wow, I wonder just how petty was the issue that precipitated that falling-out between Saki and Satoru, if the standard bonobo-style stress relief technique couldn’t staighten it out?
Too bad they didn’t take laughing baldy’s suggestion and wipe out those commie democrats. When it comes to either Robbers or Flies, I wouldn’t ever hesitate to elect the final solution, so swatting the Robber Fly should have been a no-brainer.
Thanks as always for the marvellous work!

Going by the preview, the trump card was in fact the runaways (rather than particular technology or a trap)… Interesting.
The events of the episode itself were pleasing, The humans however as a group seem to have been holding the Idiot Ball.
It was incidently eye-rolling-inducing at the surprise shown by others at information about the Robber Fly’s infrastructure, given that Saki especially has known that information since the last episode (many years ago) and apparently hasn’t made a significant effort to alert others to it.
(Ah, Saki’s behaviour in the start was extremely annoying, and it’s gladdening that that phase was over with fairly quickly.)
Smiled at the naked mole rats.
I didn’t consider the twist regarding the victim’s side, as the reverse-charade could plausibly have been pulled off even with true victims.
There’s the question of ‘What do they gain by this?’, the large battle… if what happened is that the Hornets and the Moths clashed after that, then maybe it’s a matter of weakening the army enough for the main group of the Flies to sweep in with the trump card (unannounced?) and wipe them out for certain.
I imagined a tactic of assassinating the Hornets’ queen during the battle, but apparently that wasn’t the case. Fairly refreshing in a sense that the large battle ended like that, rather than going the other way as I suspected.
    (Oh, the democracy-related hypocrisy.)
I wonder why Satoru was informing Saki in the last scene, when her department is the one overseeing those things (and his isn’t)?
    Well. Hmm.
…I wonder if Yakomaru was hiding those two already by the time the Flies/Moths letter conflict occurred in the last episode… plausible, indeed… oh, the doom.
Again, eye-rolling at the lack of expectation of the Flies being ready with a certain-kill trump card of some sort.
Given that either side could have deliberately sparked the conflict, the modernised scarily-cunning side is vastly more suspicious and in any case warrants extreme wariness/{healthy paranoia}.
Pleasant catching of Yakomaru’s familiarity with the Moths’ infrastructure (and, of course, suspicious that a healthy queen would yield power to a regent in a way mirroring that of the Flies).
Saki has no right to be surprised by this point at the minoshiro-modoki plausiblity.
Maria’s ‘sense of justice’… not being content to run away and save only two, leaving the civilisation behind them unchanged…
Hmm, I may be able to heighten my enjoyment of this series by cheering for the bakenezumi on the rise, rather than standing aghast at the incompetence of the humans (who have all the cards in their hands and are throwing them all away). Granted, this may backfire if Saki pulls out a last-minute triumph against the people who by all rights should have been successful, leaving me mourning the losing side after all. Hmmmm. Well, both sides are interesting to observe. *nods*
As always, thank you very much for your time and effort!

Lots of good thoughts there, Anonymous.
You know what makes my eyes roll? The painstaking deliberations and reluctance to judge the queerat testimony, in contast with the quick sentencing of human children based on the merest whiff of suspicion. I suppose this reflects the greater perceived threat from the kids, and the general ignorance of politics and warfare in this new society where historical knowledge is taboo for most (all?).

You know, I actually don’t mind not having an OP for this series. I rather have that minute or two spent on other things rather than something I normally skip if it’s bad or listen to if it’s actually decent.

    man00ver: Thank you!
It is indeed rather lopsided how slow the humans are to register (and disproportunately react to) the Flies as a threat.

Further time spent musing on this episode has yielded this specific (Idiot Ball -related) criticism of the humans’ actions: the moment they get word of the defection of the ‘victims’, that’s pretty much absolute proof that the whole thing was indeed a charade, and that it was carried out by the Flies. At that point, the humans know for a near-certainty that the Flies have defied the humans, and that this is the point to /immediately/ move against the Flies’ group in the dozens, while the batle-tired Hornets’ group falls back, recuperates, and represents a stable force to maintain human-loyal dominion over the lands otherwise.
    |
Instead, the humans just tilt the heads puzzledly at the proof before them and wonder aloud “That’s so strange. I wonder why that could be?” and watch as their strongest alllies are wiped out, leaving nothing in the land other than them and a large hostile group. With the Hornets as support, delivering large-scale punishment should be easy, but it probably will be less so with the Flies having free reign of all locations not physically occupied by a human, and plausibly intending to launch a large-scale assault of their own on the humans’ villages with advanced technology.
    |
For both sides, ‘offense’ is more effective than ‘defense’, and the humans have welcomed outright assault with open arms by seeing proof of betrayal in front of them of them and not striking during that single opportunity available (‘yielding the initiative’).
    |
When I think of the humans’ blank looks at news of the defection, even when they’ve had the charade-pattern spelled out to them just earlier… gah. “You knew that one of the sides had defied your authority! You’ve just gotten tangible proof about which one it is! Why aren’t you moving IMMEDIATELY to take the side of the loyal group and crush the disloyal, gun-using scarily-cunning side, even if only out of disloyalty-crushing inertia!? Why can’t you put two and two–no, one and one together…!?” Grr.

  30. “It is indeed rather lopsided how slow the humans are to register (and disproportunately react to) the Flies as a threat.”
Well, when you consider how long Queerats have been completely subservient, zero threats – it’s not so surprising.
The human community has been built around fearing what children might become, it’s the foundation of their society. Likewise, it’s completely unthinkable that Queerats would be a threat – because for as long as Queerats have existed it seems to have been unthinkable, both by themselves and the humans, that they would disobey a command – let alone be a threat to their own “Gods”.

Thank you for subbing this series! 🙂 I love it!

  32. God it’s nice to see an anime that sparks this kind of discussion in the comments almost every week! This show will truly go down as AOTY for 2012 in my book. And with UTW sub quality, almost all the discussion revolves around actual plot points rather than ‘wtf was actually said confusion & BS.
Still wondering what happened with the raw/encoding/.TS in the last episode (screencap: http://puu.sh/1UKJR ), but no one watched the older threads…

  33. @natuskashii-ne
That happens every single ep. The CS-Asahi broadcasts are just plain shit, ie. that terribleness is exactly what the japanese people see when watching it on satellite and there’s nothing anybody can do about it besides waiting 4-5 days for a less terrible broadcast, and nobody wants to wait 4-5 days just to download something a little less terrible (and we’re busy mid-week so its not like we could actually sub it then anyway)

  34. Thanks _ar. I was sure it’s not a UTW fuckup, I was just curious if the source was really that terrible at times or if there was a hiccup in the capping process / etc. Crazy, it looked like a youtube webrip for a couple seconds.
Regardless, all the more reason to love UTW for doing Shinsekai BD release! Keep up the great work, gents.

  35. When will you release the other BD for Shinsekai?
