Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S continues into the Summer season.
We will do Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Ilya, assuming it doesn’t get simulcasted. The series is scheduled to first stream on Niconico and then air on TV a week later. We will do v0 releases of the Nico stream (with little to no typesetting because it’s a waste of time to typeset to Nico stream video with the low resolution and various other problems), then release a properly done release a week later when the episode airs on TV.
We also plan on doing either Dangan Ronpa or Renai Love Lab, depending on simulcasting (with priority on Dangan), but we need a typesetter for the project. To this end, UTW is recruiting one typesetter to officially join our ranks. Please refer to the bottom extra section of this post for more details.
We were also looking at Genei wo Kakeru Taiyou, Watamote, and KimiMachi, but these are all either confirmed simulcasts or very likely to be simulcast and thus all plans for them have been abandoned.
Typesetter Recruitment
A successful applicant would
- have fairly in-depth knowledge of ASS override tags and vsfilter or libass quirks
- be able to work independently
- be able to recognize common typefaces and preferably have some experience in dealing with the more technical side of fonts
- have some experience using planar/point-based tracking applications (Mocha/After Effects)
You should also know how to use IRC and FTP, and be dedicated and available during speedsub time periods (i.e. early afternoons in the US east coast, evenings in Europe/the UK, the dead hours of the night in East Asia/Australia, etc.).

FUNimation is simulcasting Dangan, but no date is announced. Hopefully you guys do it though :>
Yeah, the idea is to go ahead with it if Funi latecasts (i.e. a delay of 12h or more from the Japanese airtime).
How exactly does your simulcast rule work? Gargantia was simulcast but you still subbed that. Sorry, I’m relevantly new to your group of viewers.

It really just depends on whether the team is willing to compete against a simulcast or not, and if doing so is worth it. In the case of Gargantia, practically the entire team was willing to push ahead with it, and the venture turned out to be somewhat worth it, too.

Please, please, please do Monogatari. If it were on Crunchyroll (who did a great job with Nise) I wouldn’t be encouraging you to waste your time, but the only option will be Daisuki or really terrible fansubbers.
Nobody wants to watch Daisuki, and *most* shows are going to be simulcasted, so it would really suck if the one show exclusive to a crappy service, with no hope of good fansubs from other groups, were to be passed over by UTW. =/

I guess you guys are too busy for Monogatari Series: Second Season after all :/ ohh well, I understand that it’d require a lot of work.
Wow guys if they don’t have time to do it or have higher priorities like the shows mentioned in the post then there’s no point in trying to get them to do monogatari.
Hopefully Monogatari Series: Second Season is picked up without having to even say so.
At the very least, I doubt what will probably be the #1 anime of the Summer and Fall seasons will be ignored by all of the quality fansub groups. If anything, it’ll probably be oversubbed.

I’m somewhat disappointed with no Monogatari too, but give UTW a break. Daisuki might have good subs, there will be plenty of other groups that’ll rip those subs and put them on better encodes, and if nothing else, Commie’s doing their own subs.

To be honest I would have liked to do Monogatari but, we lack the time, and also subbing a SHAFT show for 2 seasons is way more work than we want to sign up for. We already have Ilya on Sundays, so Monogatari is an impossibility for our small group.

There is a need, Commie are a bunch of 12 year old trolls and some of us have standards and think how a show is subtitled is /kinda/ important. Doesn’t matter if their translators know what they’re doing or not if they give editing to idiots who think subtitles are supposed to be bad stand-up comedy. They’re not serious fansubbers, never have been, and don’t deserve to be considered as such. Very disappointed that UTW won’t be around to give this show the release it deserves.

Kind of surprised that you’re considering the one Nasuverse spinoff this season (Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Ilya) but not the other (Fate/Zero Café). Especially since a) you did do Carnival Phantasm, a fellow parody series like Café, and b) Café looks like it’ll actually be more relevant to most Nasuverse fans’ interests than Prisma Ilya which, just judging from the trailers, seems to have about as much to do with the Nasuverse as Madoka Magica did once you get past the superficialities of character identities (names + designs).

Go read the manga, it’s Nasuverse all the way, even though it’s set in a world parallel to the ones we saw before. There’s a lot of comedy, but it’s still way more relevant than any Carnival Phantasm-like parodies. Of course, those still rock in their own way. 🙂
To all those dismissing Commie outright: the translators working on Monogatari S2 also worked on Gargantia as UTW-Vivid last season. Even the typesetter is the same.The only significant difference is the editor.

You clearly have no idea how much difference a real editor makes.
The infamously shitty scripts that made nearly everyone hate gg often had excellent translations, but their quality was wiped off the face of the Earth due to terrible editors who seemingly thought they were good at cracking jokes. Here’s a hint: they weren’t. And they weren’t supposed to be doing it, either.
It’s all very fine to make a joke script full of purposefully bad editing, as long as there is always the option of switching to a real, “boring” script, with an actually proper editing job.

Why trash said subgroups on their on site instead of bringing that shit on UTW’s site. And I for one watch both commie and gg’s animes if I think they have the better releases for particular animes. I’ve only encountered a little that I had a noticeable problem with.
Besides that, I’m super excited for next season. I can’t say I’m not disappointed in monogatari not being subbed, but thats just how the cookie crumbles.

Secondly, gg’s subs are not entirely garbage. They are fine though there are loads of shit terms and bad choices of words in their subs.
You should really have a look at hadena’s, commie’s, and the new fff’s subs. They are the uttermost garbage that I have ever seen in any of fan subtitling works existed in this planet.

I’ve always wondered why everyone gives Commie so much shit, they sub so many shows at the vast majority of shows and episodes are done just fine. I actually preferred their subs for Yahari last season because the show was boring as hell at first but the typesetter did some interesting things, and their use of slang was hilarious (I’ve never seen slang in subtitles before Yahari, you kinda have to see it to know what I mean though). Also when the show picked up, they dropped the more ridiculous slang but kept the cool typesetting.
In my opinion, Commie is such a huge group that there’s a good chance a show might be bad due to someone on that team not pulling their weight, but overall they’re fine.
Will UTW be subbing Brothers conflict ? There’s ONE reason justifying this anime: Satou Rina, also known as Tanamachi Kaoru, Minami Haruka and Misaka Mikoto.

Everyone has different opinion.
Using slang in subbing works is not a bad practice. The only thing ruins most of their subs is bad choice of words.
gg is a fine group with relatively consists of good typesetters, QCers, translators, and encoders. Editor–this is the shit that has ruined most of the groups actually. Some of them only edit the grammatical errors and structure sentences but they have failed to preserve the REAL context of the scripts/dialogues/monologues. I’ll laughed hard whenever the scripts are too far away from the actual context that are to be present in the anime itself.
Example:
FFF’s HaMachi (Yahari Ore no blablabla. This is the acronym used by the Japs) and Commie’s Persona 4. These are two of the most failed subs that I have ever experienced before. Heh.

UTW having the same editors or even translators doesn’t mean anything when gg’s or Commie’s end products turn out so different. Whether it be because these same staff members don’t mess around in UTW, or that their hijinks get fixed by someone else in UTW, or that UTW’s small size means quality is easier to control, it’s still a fact that Commie and gg sometimes produce subs of poor taste and UTW doesn’t.
I personally don’t care too much that UTW isn’t doing Monogatari (sure it’s disappointing, but we still get subs), but it’s a bit rich that gg and Commie have to ride off some other group’s rep just to dismiss factual allegations made against them.

I’d like to make a suggestion, if I may. I see that you have a poll up asking viewers if they would like to see the Index movie camrip subbed. While I see that you have an overwhelming number of “No”s, would it be possible to at least work on it now, so that when the actual DVD/BD rip is out, there’ll be less to do?
Like, use the camrip for reference purposes only, figure out what they’re saying and when to set it. You don’t even have to release it, just work on a prototype sub and stow it away for later, and make a few minor adjustments.
Of course, this idea really only makes sense in my head, and I have no idea if fansubbing works that way, but I’m just throwing it out there.
Toss everything else, just work on Railgun and Monogatari Series Second Season, problem solved.
How does that solve our problem of wanting to work on Prisma Illya though?!

I used to stick up for gg until I watched their version of Valvrave. NEVER AGAIN. SO BAD. SO BAD.
Also, the fact that they are nearly the best at SnK doesn’t mean their SnK subs are good, it means that everyone else’s are even worse. Even with my level of Japanese I caught enough screwups that it was annoying the heck out of me. (The last straw was in the second episode, that line about how Eren couldn’t save his mom because he was weak–when Hannes was saying he couldn’t save his mom because he lacked the strength. The same in content, but COMPLETELY WRONG in tone. See what people were saying about editors?) Better than Commie, and they didn’t screw up that line that EveTaku copied from manga fan-translators that screwed up the line, but why bother when the official subs got all of these things right?
I really hope you’ll reconsider subbing Danganronpa and Gen’ei, since the simulcasts on both are very limited, region-wise, and I would love to see them. But, you know, looking forward to whatever projects you decide on.

Seriously? The hell you smoking? Translating Mori Summer’s name into “Forest Summer” was a TERRIBLE decision. Names should not be translated, unless there’s a reason for it. There was no reason for it. Overall they are usually not bad but they do make a lot of dumb decisions like that. My only experiences with Commie have overall but pretty good, with hte exception being their Shana 3 subs having bad terms for the denizen names and such. Then again, SS-Eclipse were my favorite sub group ever so I was obviously going to dislike anyone else’s version of that show.
