The End of an Era

Well guys, now that UBW is over, this is the moment that I’m stepping down and putting my fansubbing adventures on the shelf. I’ve been fansubbing since mid-late 2009, and it’s now about 6 years later. I guess all good things must come to an end. My first show was Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood with Tomodachi.
I haven’t really found fansubbing fun for a while now, but together with the guys who worked on UBW we managed to get through it. We’ll still be doing the Blu-rays in october’ish but this will be the last release I officially work on. I’ve been running UTW for over a year now, and besides some other guy, I’m the last original staffer left. Well that’s not true actually, UTW has pretty much always run itself, even when Raze was around, though he managed to get stuff done more often than not.
My reason for retiring is as mentioned above, as well as my spare time being put towards studying these days. I’m doing a Bachelor of Animation, for whatever that’s worth. It’s kinda fun, but the amount of homework is kinda killing me because I like my free time, and well I don’t have a huge amount of it these days. But that’s where my focus will be these days, and people can still find me on Rizon if they need me. I’ve been on IRC way too long to leave it now, it’s a part of me I guess you could say.
I’ve pretty much done most jobs in my fansubbing career, besides translating of course, but I mostly focused on encoding and typesetting, with a bit of timing/karaoke stuff when I had to. I’ve done other things too, but they’ll only be known to the people that know them. I’ve seen things change dramatically and well for the most part streaming companies do an OK job, not great, but OK. I’m glad to see this is the case at least, because when I first started, I had hoped that one day we’d see legal subs that are extremely accessible. We have that today, and so I feel I can sit back now and know that there is at least some alternative out there.
I can’t tell you what is happening with Cinderella Girls, but I do know that hopefully it’ll be done. That’s all I can say really.
And well to everyone who has supported me over the years, I guess a thanks is in order, so thanks guys. And to all my friends I’ve made fansubbing who’re no longer around, I had a great time guys, pop in and say hi someday.
What’s over is over though, and I’ll never forget the good times that I had, so thanks to all the guys I’ve worked with over the years, you’ve really made it fun.
Peace out.

    While it’s indeed a shame that you’re retiring, i wish you all that’s best in your life’s new phase. You are a good subber, and UTW is among the best fansubs out there. I sincerely thank you for your years of hard work. You will be missed.

    I know UTW since Angel Beats and it’s a long way here. So many good animes, some bad too, but whatever. So many things happened in the real world and in the anime world.
    You going stop fansubbing and live your life?
    Well, go for it men. Fansubbing ins’t your life, it’s a side thing you manage to do for fun and because you want/can. There are other things you want to do, for sure, other things you want to experiment, other places you want to go, objectives you want to reach . At some point you should give priority for what really matters. Live your life and do what you want of it, that’s the true way of things. Also, keep watching anime. Best of regards!

    Feels like Eclipse all over again. Back in the day ,2008ish or more, when one good fansubbing group closed up shop, another decent fansub group would spring up to take it’s place. It’s not like that anymore. So I guess we are seeing and “end to an era” in more ways than one.
    You’ll truly be missed UTW.

    Hi,
    I don’t really follow anime fansubbing that much , i am a vn player. I kinda wish some resources from anime subbing goes into vn subbing, but it just not possible. Thanks for all your work, ubw was my fav subber and i have downloaded and watched a few animes from you guys (few animes is like a lot of animes for me).
    And i totally understand being busy and stuff. I am really busy right now, doing my bachelors in biotech. In my younger days i used to be much more liberal with my time and i dreaded the days when i would have so less time. But now that i am in this phase, i think that despite the hectic lifestyle, its what i choose so i will face it with courage. Besides its kinda fun, learning. ANYWAY, CYA

    I guess this mean we won’t see a Heaven’s Feel movie release from you which is a shame. Still I am very grateful for all your awesome anime releases throughout the years. UTW proved that you were one of the best if not the best fansubbing groups. You even put professional subbers to shame. But alas, all good things must come to an end.
    I remember your humble beginnings when you translated Deen’s UBW movie and the quality and effort you put into it. From there I knew you guys were special. I guess it was fitting that you wrote UTW’s final chapter with finishing ufotable’s UBW series which was your namesake. Unlike many fansub groups that have come and gone UTW will be likely remembered most.
    Again, my sincere gratitude to you and your staff. It is sad to see you go but UTW will always be the benchmark of fansubs. Hats off to you.

    Boy, 2009 sure brings back memories. At that I graduated from highschool, and I didn’t even think on watching anime in English. I remember I began watching anime subbed in English in 2011, because of some girl I liked back then. As that girl’s internet service sucked dicks, I downloaded the anime for her. It was then when found you guys, when you were working on Fate/Zero.
    Shit happened and everything got screwed. But one little, precious thing remained. Your subs, ar. Since I came across you, I’ve always given priority to your releases, as they are as amazing as they get.

    Eh, I liked the anime you subbed. Thanks for your efforts, as the quality was great for a fan-based project stand.
    Guess from now on, we the fans, would have to leech from another group’s efforts in lieu of you leaving for good from the fansub scene! Peace out.

  74. I wish you will. UTW has been one of the best fansubbing groups.

  75. I remember coming to this site for a couple series. I wouldn’t consider myself a follower of UTW but I do come every couple of months just to check. Funny enough, I check and see that you’re now quitting lol. It was easy to just download an entire series off UTW rather than clicking on each episode individually like other sites. The only downside as a viewer was the limited number of series covered by your group. Of course there’s only so much you can do but I felt one reason UTW might not have been as big as it deserved to be was just the limited number of series covered. I always admired your work and would look to see if your group and done a particular show or not before resorting to other subgroups/torrent sites cause I really enjoyed your subs.
    I’ve generally downloaded whatever subs were available but for complete series, if available (Shin Sekai Yori, Accel World, etc) I used UTW. Seeing other people’s subs, yours was definitely of top quality. The work is really good and I think some people underestimate your contributions. I remember the days when streaming subs were not readily available and groups such as yours helped to translate works (Eva movies yes!). Now there’s more streaming subs immediately available and the turnaround time is less.
    My opinion is that in a way, your group helped play a big role in popularizing anime in the States. Companies probably wouldn’t have invested as much into subbing new episodes back then because there wasn’t as big a market. You guys at UTW helped to meet that need by volunteering for the rest of us. With your subs, you helped to grow a market that once not profitable, now is big enough to cater to, in part because of your free labor to make it available when others would’ve thought there’s no financial incentive to do so. You guys deserve a huge appreciation from those companies, who are doing what you guys basically do and charging for it because now there’s more fans. And you guys are still better than them!
    Thanks so much for all the hard work and time you put into the fansubs. You guys really helped to grow a community that companies are now making money from. Overall it’s good for anime as a whole, I just wish those media companies gave you a slice of the pie for your contributions. It would’ve been nice if you kept going but all things do have to end. Best of luck in all your endeavors and thanks so much again for the time you spent. Truly truly thankful for your work. I’ll always have some of your subs on my hard drive.

    As my da used to say – Nothing last ferevar, no matter what them Mongrels mite say, or how thay mite wish it to be so.
    That is why I am riting this. I ent never rote to comment before, and I do not reckon to rite one agenn, but sometimes a man must do what a man must do. And what I must do is to thank you fer all them subs you’ve done fer us common folks…!
    Growing up as a lad in { name withheld }, I seen all yer subbing works and stories. Sadly… All things must end some day. Told to me by me da, who was told by his da, who was told by his da, and so on. But see, fan-subbers and fan-subs ent the same thing… One comes and goes. While the other will always be there as long as there is discontent with official releases of our beloved animu… Now I don’t noe about you, but any fan-subber that fites fer us folks that like better quality subs is okay by me.
    And so I, Dunt Noe Who I Am do firmly say, with the utmost connvicshun, that someday, new grups will continue your fan-subbing works. And hopefully be better than the rest of them! { ~Manly Tears~ }

I’m not sure where UTW is going now, but I can at least say that thanks to you and many others endeavours I have enjoyed quite a many things at a great quality. I quickly felt that if UTW was subbing it, there was no point at looking at anyone else.
    Now, do as well in your future endeavours as you have shown me in the past through here.
    Good day,

    It’s going to be sad to see you guys go as UBW has provided the best in quality when it comes to releases. I have enjoyed them since ’09 and still do with Fate/stay Night. Thank you everyone at UBW for the hard work and the late night efforts you all have put in for release and wish you good luck in whatever endeavors you will come across. Seriously, you guys will be missed ; ;

    BTW, all you 20-30 year olds with college (or military, or three years in one job, doesn’t have to be aviation related), if you’re stymied looking for work, I’ll plug the US gov’t and recommend air traffic control. Just Google “how to become an air traffic controller”, and take it from there. It was a great career. You might even get an instructor who likes anime.
    I don’t mean to misuse the comments, but there’s plenty of 20-somethings that could use a leg up.; Plus, there won’t be any more action here, anyway.

    There are some disappointments when you guys called to quit on SYD, but nah, I still respect that decision., because compared to that, UTW staffs have unique quality subs almost none other fansubbers have 😀

    I know there will be a few small groups still around (at least that’s what I’ve been told because of stuff murica never gets like borderline loli hentai, precure and macross) but there may never be a large amount of fansubbers ever again thanks to simulcasts. The next high school anime fan won’t be inspired to learn to translate or the other bits of fansubbing because the easier option is to check crunchy , funi or neon alley.

    Over the years, i’ve seen groups come and go, but UTW has a special place in my heart. It was prob on 2009-2010 that I discovered english translated fansubs, (my mother tongue is spanish), and from that point onwards I was hooked, hooked witht he speed their releases were (most of the time) and the effort and quality each show had. In all those years with all honestly i can say that despite the problems or difficulties i had IRL, groups like UTW, MAZUI, RYUUMARU heck even GG bringed each new season something that I could and still can call HAPPINESS in the form of translated anime.
    It hurts to see on of my favorite groups go, but, I believe that you must like something in order to keep doing it! So to -AR- and all the former UTW staff, thank you for all these years of awesomeness!! =)

    ar: “We’ll still be doing the Blu-rays in october’ish”

  220. As a very oldfag, I saw your first releases back in 2010 (Angel Beats was one of them IIRC). There were still a lot of groups round then, though some were already on the way out. I remember your group being different, in that you started out making great releases right from the beginning. You continued right the way through as one of the very best groups (and I’m looking right back to the early 2000’s here for comparison).
    ar: you mentioned that “for the most part streaming companies do an OK job, not great, but OK.” – I agree with this, but with the passing of the last few ‘serious’ subbers I can’t help feeling a little depressed about the future. I mean, all you have to do is compare an episode done by yourselves with the streaming equivalent to see what we’re losing. But anime fandom as a whole isn’t what it was, and neither, I think, is the raw product coming out of Japan. I’ll still be watching whatever passes for anime in another ten years time, I’m sure, but something tells me that the last ten years or so has seen the best of it (hope I’m wrong of course).
    Many, many thanks for being so good for so long.

    Dear ar,
    I started following you guys when UTW first started, with the UBW movie, back when it was Raze, Moshiburner, 8th, Fnord, Kusino. I remember all the posts about Misaka that came with every Index episode. While none of you guys will know me, I believe I have come to know at least a little about you, and I regard all of you as friends.
    Over the years, I have enjoyed a great many of your subs, and I do not recall ever having been disappointed, though the batches will sometimes suffer mysterious and arduous delays. There was a time when utw.me was the first site I visited daily. My ISP did not support torrents, so UTW was a godsend in ever way. Over the past two years, I haven’t been visiting as often, for various reasons. Imagine my surprise when I saw your post. Well, not really. I guess I knew this was going to happen eventually, especially after Raze’s departure for medical school reminded us that paying bills and building careers would have to come before fansubbing. Nevertheless, UTW had become a constant landmark of fabsubbing for me, and I suppose a little bit of me expected you guys to always be around, even though the rest of me knew better. As you say, all good things must come to an end, but at least UTW as a group will keep going forward. I’m really proud of what all of you have achieved and appreciate all that you have given the community.
    It’s 7am and I haven’t slept a wink. I’m going to stop rambling now.
    In the end, I guess what I’m trying to say is just this: So long, and thanks for all the fish. I’ll miss you all very much. Very, very much.
    Best Regards,
    Tea Time

    Hey guys, quick technical question here!
    I would appreciate it if you can let me know if you encode your anime videos in 16-235 RGB (Dynamic Range Limited) or 0-255 RGB (Dynamic Range Full). This would help me out a lot in determining if I should set my HTPC setup to have a limited display or a full display, and calibrate accordingly. I have searched around the web for a long time to find out how to determine whether an MKV file is encoded in limited range or full range, but all sources lead to me having to ask the encoder!
    I appreciate the work you guys do and am thankful for the response! Cheers!

  265. Rokudaime on January 15, 2016 at 6:33 am said:

    @Mika
    Hahaha, ye, no. They’re not going to take any credit unless UTW never ends up releasing the rest period. Most people who care about Fate and who want a quality archive release of this series will still go to UTW, even if they have to wait a heck of a lot longer, because they know what they’re getting. They know there’s no real substitute. The only way SallySubs would take the credit is if UTW end up cancelling the S2 BD’s all together, and never release them.

  266. SkullSkill on January 15, 2016 at 9:11 am said:

    @Mika : I don’t know, in my opinion their releases have decent quality compared to no subs at all, and they are still learning to give the best they can do… Besides, they did mentioned that they are doing UBW’s BDs by their original subtitles, right?
    I mostly refer to UTW for any series possible like you too, but I think it’s harsh for you to mock other’s effort like that. Let’s just be a non-hater, OK?

  267. Fair enough – In hindsight I should not have used the term SallyShits. No offense meant, just a bad habit among my peers to refer to them as such.
    I am however very keen on the UTW release, and seeing Noobsubs & Sally taking up UBW as well, I just hope UTW gets the credit they deserve. Been following UTW for years and I feel this show belongs to them so much more than an upcoming fansubber looking to grab a big release to make a name for themselves. AFAIK know Sally said one time that he considers UTW dead and doesn’t expect them to release UBW at all!

  268. SkullSkill on January 15, 2016 at 9:50 am said:

    Hmm… I never think any fansubbers would like to take a popular series made often subbed by a popular group to create a fame to themselves. Supposedly that happens, perhaps they did it because they just wanted to.
    And yeah, I vaguely remembered Sally said that somewhere, but perhaps they prioritize on consistent speed rather than waiting for an example from a great quality subbers like UTW.
    That being said, all of us learn things everyday as long as we live. Perhaps some of us are slow learners 🙂

  269. SkullSkill on January 15, 2016 at 9:55 am said:

    My point is that it is just a case of different priorities. The group is still learning, after all.

  270. Lectea on January 15, 2016 at 8:59 pm said:

    I’m waiting for UTW out of a kind of group loyalty, but I’d have no problem checking out another group’s release if it happened. Either way, I’d be editing the final product myself. Couldn’t allow myself to archive it without changing “my body is built of blades” to “I am the bone of my sword” and changing Shirou’s incantation to match the visual novel’s.

  271. That would be so cool – I haven’t seen the show yet but why would you not match it to the visual novel from the get-go (assuming it matches the spoken dialogue)
    Maybe I should try to figure out how to do that myself.

  272. woohoo can’t wait for ubw s2 BDs 🙂

  273. Lectea on January 21, 2016 at 5:43 am said:

    They have their reasons, of course, and it’s their project. I’m just nitpicky.
    I would change the incantations in episodes 10 and 24 to match the accepted English versions, and any instance of “my body is built of blades” (notably 19) to “I am the bone of my sword”. Possibly the summoning ritual in episode 00 if I were on a roll. Apply ’em, keep ’em for myself, or pass it along any time I found out a friend wanted to watch the series. Not that I’d want to seem like I’m one-upping UTW; it wouldn’t be an issue if there were, say, a second subtitle track with these changes. But I know that won’t happen.

  274. Would you be willing to share those adjusted subtitle tracks on mega or dropbox for me when the time comes?

  275. Lectea on January 21, 2016 at 8:20 am said:

    Sure, assuming all goes well when the time comes.

  276. Xythar on January 25, 2016 at 4:45 am said:

    It’s done that way because there’s both an English and Japanese version of the UBW chant (used in both the game and the show) and the English version is not a literal translation of the Japanese. I would say it’s meant to be read alongside it rather than as a translation of it.
    You’re free to do whatever you like to the subs, of course, but if we did sub the Japanese chant using the alternate English one there would be a whole different group of people who would complain. Can’t win ’em all.

  277. Lectea on January 25, 2016 at 7:00 am said:

    Yeah, I understand the situation and the different readings of the chant. It’s not incorrect, it’s just different than the visual novel I read years ago and I wanted to make it match for my own satisfaction. Learning Aegisub and MKVToolNix was much more useful than if I just sat in comments and complained about personal preference like I’ve seen people do.
    I appreciate the work you guys put into the series.

    I’m honestly wondering right now if they’ll even release it. Like, even though ‘ar’ said that it would take a month, we’re already coming close to 2 months. I’m getting annoyed and hope they do it soon. And since it’s their last project, you’d expect them to do their best on it, and as quick as possible, but even then…

  294. On the contrary. Since ar and UTW are retired, you shouldn’t expect them to HAVE to do anything. The fact that they’re still working on it to push out a final release to finish off the series is admirable and we should all be grateful that there’s work being put in even after the group is done. They have no obligation to follow through with this and could give up and drop it at any time but haven’t.
    I haven’t managed to watch the show yet, but I’ll be patient and wait for UTW’s release since I have faith in the quality they’ve done for years of releases. I even hold a slim glimmer of hope that one day in a couple years we might even see a special release of the Heaven’s Feel movie from UTW too or something if they feel like dropping some free time into a treat. To me, the TYPE-MOON world premiere subbers will always be this group.

    Waiting in earnest for UBW season 2, but I was wondering about the creditless OP/ED.
    I ask since Fate/Zero had them (plus other special features) and UBW season 1 didn’t. I don’t think many people would want the season 2 release delayed for something like that, but could the OP/EDs be released even separately as a complete set for the whole series maybe? Either way’s fine and of course take whatever time you need for all of it.
    Thanks for everything.

    There is, it’s just that it’s an Animebytes (a private tracker) exclusive, so you need to be registered on that site to get it. It’s a BD encode with UTW’s subs. ‘course, there are a few (not many) new scenes in the BD’s, and for those I think edited official subs were used.

    Oh yeah right, I forgot about Animebytes but, their registration process quite bothered me. Asking so many questions and with details, and then complaining they are not specific enough. Dude, it’s not a job interview. I tried once but then I didn’t want to try it anymore.
    And yes, I only wait for the BD because the few new scenes, I could easily watch the TV version but, I’m here, let’s wait just a little more.

  310. Rokudaime on March 31, 2016 at 11:44 pm said:

    Ye, their registration process isn’t easy. I failed on my first attempt, but got accepted on my second, after following their suggestions for a revised application. Also, private trackers aren’t a walk in the park to use. You’ll get banned quickly if you’re not careful and don’t seed properly, so it requires a completely different approach/mindset compared to how most people would normally use torrents. But they have a lot of re-encodes and some cool exclusive stuff, so it’s nice to have the site on hand. They are also actually pretty nice and user friendly, giving you a starting upload ratio of 10GB, giving you bonus points as you seed, and having all 1080p releases be freelech. So in some ways they are actually better than BakaBT. I only use them when I can’t find what I’m looking for on BakaBT, Nyaa, or Tokyo Toshokan though.

  312. Humberto Hernandez on April 1, 2016 at 8:30 pm said:

    Yeah, but I’m not interested in being controlled by them. I seed all I download up to a month. I don’t have a hug HDD and my internet is just 1.5MB (170kb/sec down and 47 up) and I don´t like keeping stuff.
    Anyway, I asume they have good seed rate, that means surely my stuff is not gonna be uploaded, so I’d end up as a leecher. That had happened to me in another private tracker, and I ended up as a leecher. Hell, I wanted to seed, but the thing didn’t upload data, I can´t force it either.

    Yes, but on AB that’s only a problem on the non-1080p torrents. Downloading the 1080p ones doesn’t decrease your ratio, so as long as you seed for a while after downloading them in order to avoid getting a hit and run, you’ll be fine. But for other torrents, then yeah. It’s the same for me. That’s the same on BakaBT as well though.

    AniDB is all you really need: https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=main
    Look up the anime in question on the site (in this case, the Heaven’s Feel movies), and you’ll get a page with all the info you need, such as when the series is expected to start airing, what groups are working on subbing it, and in what quality, how good they are etc etc. Here’s the page for HF, if you want it:
    https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=10755
    If you want, you also have FansubDB (https://fansubdb.com/wiki) for news about what shows are airing each season, and who’s working on them, and Fansub.co (http://fansub.co/) which compares fansub groups with each other, but really…all you need is AniDB. 😛

  332. Lectea on April 18, 2016 at 6:22 pm said:

    I understand your concern, but this anime is absolutely a no-go for those who haven’t read the visual novel. It relies too heavily on material you would only learn in the Fate route, as well as elements that would make no sense without knowledge of Heaven’s Feel. As a reader of the VN yourself, you must have realized that as well.
    I suppose one could argue that Fate/Zero sheds light on some of those things, but I strongly discourage anyone from watching Zero as it is an incredibly poor series that reflects quite badly on the franchise. That aside, it and the UBW anime are also mutually spoiling each other – watching one will give away most of the plot twists in the other.

  333. Rokudaime on April 19, 2016 at 5:13 pm said:

    @Lectea
    The Fate/Zero anime is amazing, what are you smoking!? O_o There’s a reason it has such a high rating everywhere. And you can watch the UBW anime just fine if you’ve seen Fate/Zero first. It’s not that big of a deal if you haven’t either. You’ll still understand most of the UBW anime even if you haven’t played the VN, though obviously having played the VN helps, and of course you should play it anyway, since it’s amazing.

  334. Lectea on April 19, 2016 at 6:14 pm said:

    I can’t disagree more with praise for Fate/Zero, but I do know some people who enjoyed it, so that’s a thing – although interestingly enough, all of those I’ve encountered until now saw it before reading the VN, while those who read the VN first hated Zero. I can’t count ratings as being indicative of quality, but everyone’s got their own opinion, which is fine.
    About going into the UBW anime blind, the reason for my concern is that I know several people who did it that way and all of them had to ask many questions that were answered in Fate or Heaven’s Feel but not really addressed in the anime.

  335. Rokudaime on April 20, 2016 at 3:32 am said:

    @Lectea
    No, dude, if you don’t like Fate/Zero, then that’s that, I find it very very strange, but to each his own. However, you’re in denial or blind to the facts if you think most people who are into Fate don’t like FZ. It’s WITHOUT A SHRED OF DOUBT the other way around, most people DO like it (including most people who, like me, played the VN ages before watching the UBW anime). YOU’RE in the minority among TM and Fate fans by not liking it, NOT the other way around. And ratings usually do reflect quality. The people I know all liked it. Some read the VN first, some didn’t.

    That’s really all I can say when someone decides to play capslock-warrior and act like opinions are facts or something. I should have anticipated this from the “what are you smoking” comment. At any rate, I’m not going to participate in an internet argument in this post’s comments.

  337. Midlifecrisis on April 20, 2016 at 1:43 pm said:

    I cannot help but agree with Rokudaime. I for myself never played the Fate-VN and I don’t intend to because everything I saw from Fate/Stay Night is very poor compared to Fate/Zero in my opinion. I think you can notice that the source which the whole Stay Night-Series are based on ist just a freaking Eroge . Yes, I know that at first it wasn’t supposed to be an Eroge but it turned out as one and the Anime ist based on it. Compared to that Fate/Zero is just much more mature and well-written, I couldn’t find a single character that annoyed me (as far as I remember) while this fucking school/harem setting of Stay Night just really disappointed me after watching UBW. To remember where this conversation started: I really don’t think you have to play (or read, whatever you prefer) the VN to get what’s happening in Stay Night, especially if you watched Zero. At least I didn’t have to.
    And @Lectea don’t you think that’s kinda poor? He didn’t use caps to just scream at your name on his screen, he used caps to highlight what he was trying to say. Just backing out of the conversation when starting the whole argument really is poor.

  338. Lectea on April 20, 2016 at 7:56 pm said:

    I didn’t start an argument though. My original comment was to try and help anyone on the fence about the anime with some guidance that could be valuable. I followed up to the initial reply with my personal experience and all of the fans I’ve met, while acknowledging that differing opinions are out there. At no point did I say anything inflammatory. Given that, responses with “what are you smoking”, “you’re in denial or blind to facts”, and the overall tone of “I’m right, you’re wrong” is a pain in the neck. I’m just too old for that nonsense.

    Anyway, you guys can take Zero vs FSN/Secondaries vs Purists debate elsewhere. This comment section is mostly about UTW’s releases and there’s plenty of other places to continue on with your pointless ramblings.

  340. Rokudaime on April 21, 2016 at 5:52 am said:

    @Lectea
    You misunderstood me dude. You need to read posts more carefully. I never claimed my subjective opinion on whether FZ is good or not, or whether it’s worse or better than FSN, is fact. Same about your opinion. We all like different things like you said. I might disagree strongly with your opinions and find the hard to fathom, but I never said they were objectively wrong. What I pointed out to you, and which was what I was trying to get across by using caps to highlight those points, was that the majority of Fate fans like FZ, whether they played the FSN VN first or not, and THAT’S what I am proclaiming to be an objective fact. That fact has nothing to do with opinions, it’s just the way it is. And the whole reason I pointed this out in the first place, was because your comment made it sound to me like you were suggesting/insinuating that most Fate fans do NOT like FZ, which is the opposite of the truth, and thus just plain wrong. THAT’S what I meant by either being in denial or being blind to the facts.
    @Midlifecrisis
    I’m sorry for criticising you after you’ve just defended me, but the level of ignorance in your post is stunning. Unfortunately it’s the kind of ignorant nonsense I’ve heard from other FZ only people who haven’t played the VN either, and it’s the kind of thing us old long-time fans of Fate and TM are most annoyed at hearing from people who are newer to TM. Comments like “just a friggin’ eroge” (you have no idea what the VN is like and what you’re talking about. The eroge stuff is just an extra, the insanely lenghty, complex, and awesome plot of the game is what it’s about), and “the anime is based on it” (this should be common sense, but you can’t judge a work based on its adaptation dude. You always need to check the original source. You know how many manga series and visual novels have had bad anime adapatations? A LOT!) makes me facepalm pretty hard tbh. That FZ is more mature also shows that you don’t really know what you’re talking about. Heaven’s Feel, the last route of the VN, is just as dark, gritty, and mature as FZ, maybe even more so. This is assuming that’s what you’re refering to when you say “mature”. if you’re just refering to FZ being more complex content wise, and thus being for an older audience than FSN because of that, then you’re even more wrong. FSN overall has a lot more to it and deals with many more themes than FZ, some of which are very mature in that sense indeed.
    We are in agreement about not having to have read the VN first in order to understand the gist of the UBW anime though, especially if you’ve watched FZ first. Though of course, reading the VN first does make you understand the UBW anime better, and probably appreciate it more.

    Even though i fully understand that with all the IRL problems and the group considered technically dead, this is getting a lil bit crazy considering they already did the TV version of season 2 and released it a long time ago. There aren’t that many blu-ray changes for the second part (enough to not be able to just slap existing script onto a bd rip) besides the Sunny Day OVA. Previous main excuse was that they waited for the official english blu-ray release, which happened 3 months ago and then it was that TLC was being a butt. I still wish it’s gonna be done eventually, but oh boy is it painful. Hopefully they all are doing well and this project hasn’t become just a massive burden so they think that the fans gave up already.

    Ye, I gave up a while ago. I think eventually you’re all probably gonna have to give up and bite the sour apple and do like I did, and settle for the second best thing, which is grabbing a BD encode from someone else that uses UTW’s subs. Then you’ll have a BD encode, and you’ll have UTW’s subs. The only thing that could make it inferior to a proper UTW BD release is the fact that there are a few (not exactly a lot) new scenes in the BD’s that has to settle for the official subs, since UTW hasn’t done those.

    Like Altaire said, the HA translation project has been completed for a good while now. These days all they’re working on is importing the voices from the VITA version into the PC version. Visit the Beast’s Lair forums if you want the details.
    @Altaire
    No, I believe the USS release uses the official subs. The release that uses UTW’s subs that I have is called Salender-UTW. It’s a Bluray | MKV | h264 10-bit | 1080p | FLAC 2.0 | Softsubs release. The subs have been re-timed so they match up with the BD’s, and for the few new scenes that are exclusive to the BD’s (and as such have not been subbed by UTW yet), official subs are used, though they have been slightly edited. It’s an AnimeBytes remux. Note that this does not include the Sunny Day OVA. For that one you’d have to get Amatsuka’s release or something.
    @impatient x2
    Well, the release isn’t marked as an exclusive as far as I can tell, so it should be fine for me to upload it somewhere I think, but the whole thing is like 16.34GB, and my upload speed is around 70 to 80kb per sec…That would take a while…I don’t know, I will have to think about it, and see if I can even find the time to do it…

  364. Midlifecrisis on May 5, 2016 at 9:23 am said:

    The easiest way to extrakt subtitles is to just use MKVCleaver. Just drag and drop all files in there and select the subtitle file and the attachments on the right sidebar (batch mode). Remember to select attachments because it contains all necessary fonts for correctly displaying the subs.

    You might have to install mkvtoolnix though or at least get the mkvextract.exe I think. So if you’re familiar with working with cmd you can just use mkvextract.exe without a GUI

    Anyhow, concerning the subtitle extraction, as Midlifecrisis mentioned you could use MKVCleaver, but let me try to keep it as straightforward as possible and taking into account using GUI. So assuming you are on Windows:
    1. Download MKVToolnix (http://www.fosshub.com/MKVToolNix.html) and MKVExtractGUI (http://www.videohelp.com/software/gMKVExtractGUI). I would suggest the portable versions of both.
    2. Extract both and move the two files from MKVExtractGUI into the same folder as MKVToolnix.
    3. Run gMKVExtractGUI.exe, then maximize the window so it’s not all squished.
    4. For the input file, browse to the first episode and select that. For output, create a new folder somewhere to dump the extracted files and tick the box that says “Lock”. MKVToolnix Directory you can leave alone.
    5. Below you should see a list of files to be extracted: something like video, then audio, then subtitles. Tick the subtitles track, and then also the attached font files below it.
    6. Click “Extract”, after processing for a bit you should find that an .ass file along with a string of font files have been placed in that new folder your created. The subtitle file will bear the name of the mkv you extracted it from. So now change your input file to the next episode, select the subtitle and fonts, then extract again. (It’s possible that every episode uses the same set of fonts, but it’s also possible that there is a different one now and then which is why I recommend selecting them all each time.)
    When all is said and done, that folder should contain all the sub tracks, all the fonts, and still be under 10MB.

    Well everyone, thanks to Teiren’s explanation I was able to extract the subs (and fonts). 🙂 I’ve put them in a RAR archive (it’s only 2,6 MB), and uploaded them to both my public Dropbox folder and to my MEGA account. I’ll post the two links one by one in separate posts after this one so as to avoid the “Your comment is awaiting moderation.” issue. Now of course, I haven’t actually tested the subs together with the Salender-Raws torrent to see how well they work together with them, since I don’t have the Raws, so you’ll all have to do that yourselves. Presumably the timing on them should match up perfectly with those Raws though, and they should work just fine.

    @tryuik
    You’re welcome! For episodes 1-12 though, wouldn’t it be better to just download UTW’s own S1 BD release? 😛 That’s what I did. I don’t have Salender’s releases for those episodes, so I can’t extract their subs from those. I guess I could extract the subs from my UTW episodes and upload them if for whatever reason you still want me to, just bear in mind that they will be timed for UTW’s BD episodes, not Salender’s. I don’t think you’ll have much use for them really.
    @Altaire
    For the fonts do what Midlifecrisis said. For the .ass sub files, you can either put them in the same folder as where you have the anime episodes, and then give each of them the exact same name as the video file for each episode that they match up with, which for most decent media player programs should make them load the subs automatically when you fire up the episode. Alternatively you can put them wherever you want and don’t care about renaming them, and then manually load the corresponding sub file in your media player each time you fire up an episode, though that’s gonna be kind of a pain…The third and final option is to do what Midlifecrisis said and mux the subs into the episodes using mkvtoolnix.

    These should work, although again I don’t have Salender’s video files so I couldn’t check them for timing or aesthetic. I’ve never used Mega before but I think that’s how I’m supposed to link it. Changes listed.
    Episode 18: “I am the bone of my sword…/That’s the incantation you were given after you became a Heroic Spirit, right?”
    Episode 20: “I am…/…the bone of my sword.”
    Episode 24: “I am the bone of my sword!/Steel is my body and fire is my blood/I have created over a thousand blades/Unaware of Loss/nor aware of Gain/Withstood pain to create weapons,/waiting for one’s arrival/I have no regrets. This is the only path/My whole life was Unlimited Blade Works!”
    Muxing for Dummies (like me):
    -open MKVToolNix GUI
    -on the bottom, click +Add source files
    -load in the appropriate video file and the corresponding subtitle file
    -afterwards, click on the subtitle file in the lower of the two input windows
    -go to the Properties window
    -Mux: yes
    -Track name: whatever you want. [Lope] in the filename is a joke because that’s what most people know me as.
    -Language: English (eng)
    -“Default track”: yes (if you want to not have to change tracks every time)
    And that’s it. If I missed anything, let me know.

    @Lectea
    Ye, the fact that the UTW-Salender release is (annoyingly enough) only available on AnimeBytes is the reason I extracted and shared the subs in the first place, so that others can enjoy UTW’s subs on a BD encode, since I have the UTW-Salender release, and an account on AnimeBytes.
    Also, ye, exclusive torrents on AB are marked as such, and if you share those you will get in trouble with the AB admins for sure. I don’t think there are too many of those though. I haven’t come across any yet myself, unless I’ve somehow missed the marking. The Salender-UTW release doesn’t seem to be exclsuive either as far as I can tell. It’s just that it happens to only be on AB, with no one from the site having bothered to share it elsewhere apparently. I could try myself, but my upload speed is abysmal…
    @tryuik
    Ah, OK, I see your point. I’m afraid I can’t help you with getting any Salender-UTW subs for episodes 1-12 though, since I don’t have those episodes from them. I went with UTW’s own BD release for those. If you put each season in a separate folder, you won’t have to worry about the files/episodes being somewhat disorganized from having different filenames. I won’t be downloading Salender’s version of episodes 1-12 myself, since I prefer UTW’s version the most anyway.
    As for uploading the Salender-UTW release from AB (not talking about sharing the same exact torrent of course, as that’d get me banned, and I don’t want that!), well, as I said my upload speed is terrible, only like between 70 and 90kb per sec, so making a torrent for it and seeding it isn’t really gonna work, and same with uploading the whole thing in one go to a direct download site like MEGA, but I might consider uploading each episode one by one over a longer period of time to MEGA and Dropbox later. It’s gonna take a while though, obviously, not only because of my poor upload speed, but because I also need to find the time.
    @Teiren & FairlySeeU
    You’re welcome! 🙂
    @itssohot
    Go with Amatsuka’s BD release for that one. It’s good, and you can find it on Nyaa and pretty much everywhere.
    @igyman & Altaire
    If UTW releases S2 in BD, I will also be downloading that one and replacing what I currently have for sure. 🙂 I’ll probably still be checking this site every day for God knows how long so long as the site itself isn’t closed lol. I still wanna see if some of the people from the group suddenly make a limited comeback in 2017 or 18 in order to release their own subs of the 3 HF movies, after all. 😛

  398. Lectea on May 8, 2016 at 5:47 am said:

    To clarify, there is no “Salender-UTW” for 1-12. Salender video was used with another group’s subs for that release. Only 13-25 is “Salender-UTW”, so you’re best off going with UTW’s first half release. The font/style/etc looks exactly the same throughout, so you’re not missing anything.

Under “Description” where you have the torrent info and an example info of the stats and coding for the first episode, it says:
    “Reupload with UTW’s official BD batch scripts.

    Also, does anyone know if the BDs are going to be encoded so that it’ll be smaller in size or something? Or would that diminish the quality so it’s better off not to expect any?

    There isn’t any S2 BD 720p (yet) that using UTW subs.
    Quality wise, if you’re watching on laptop, there isn’t any big difference between 1080 and 720. The difference are slightly felt (minorly though, I’m comparing Kara no Kyoukai eps 7 at 720p and 1080p, not UBW) at 42″ HDTV. Personally, I don’t mind using 720 since it’s smaller-sized and you didn’t lose anything big compared to 1080p, easier to be archived

I’m talking about comparing 1080p BD release and 720p BD release (which didn’t available from UTW for this series, sadly)

And I first downloaded the 720p version cuz it was 5 times smaller than the 1080p version. Later I found out somewhere in here that only the 1080p version has extra scenes and stuff.

    @_Rustle_ UTW only put out a BD 1080p copy of the first 13 episodes. Any BD 720p copies, or any BD copies of the second 13 episodes for that matter, may have used UTW’s scripts but they are not from UTW itself. As far as your situation goes, your 720p copy must have been a mislabeled TV version by whoever made it. The additional footage is from the home video release, so whether it’s a 1080p or 720p encode online does not matter with regards to that.

  426. _Rustle_ on May 16, 2016 at 5:35 pm said:

    @Lectea ok then. But I have a few questions now.
    1. Is TV version the aired version with the brightness filters and not-so-sharp animation? If so, then the 720p version that I had (I got rid of it) is NOT the TV version then since it wasn’t filtered and the animation was better.
    2. About the additional footage: does that mean regardless if the BD is 1080p or 720p, the extra bits are only from home video release?
    3. What are home video releases?
    Thanks for taking your time to answer(if you’re going to). Hahaha.

  427. Lectea on May 16, 2016 at 5:50 pm said:

    @_Rustle_
    1. The TV version had the brightness turned down. I don’t know about the “not-so-sharp” animation, I don’t think that was changed.
    2. Yes. Regardless if it’s 1080p, 720p, 480p, or any resolution you can think of – if the source is the home video release, the extra content and correct brightness are in there.
    3. Home video is what people can buy, as opposed to watching it on television. Today this means BD or DVD, although the term started in the VHS era. Typically, though not always, a home video release of a television anime will clean up and improve some problems like sloppy artwork, etc. There are also laws in Japan regarding flashing colors and brightness, so scenes with such content would have to be darkened for television. These laws do not apply to home video release, so the scenes are left at their intended brightness. It is in the home video release which ufotable included several minutes of extra scenes in several episodes on UBW.
    Hope that clears everything up.

    You realize it’s pretty staggeringly obvious that “They” in this case is correct, and “I” isn’t, due to the “Both” in the “Both were right” and “Both of them were right” lines, right? Having “Both were right” after only “Once, I had a dream” doesn’t make sense. And you not only missed such an obvious thing, you’re also going ahead and strongly complaining about a very good and obviously necessary correction to those lines.

    >Having “Both were right” after only “Once, I had a dream” doesn’t make sense.
    Yes, it does make sense, and the reason why the tlc guy and you think otherwise is because you guys just read the lines and didn’t take the scene into account. Let me spell it out for you.
    Once, I had a dream -> Flashback scene showing young artoria & saber / Both were right. / Both of them were right”. She is saying she once had a dream (to become king), then thinks back about her life pre and post king. “I” in this case is correct. Do you honestly still think otherwise?

  449. _Rustle_ on June 15, 2016 at 9:21 am said:

    @superirate
    I see where you’re coming from. However, I think Saber’s dream, instead of pre and post king, was about deciding to become, or not to become, king. So on the left would be her continuing her life as a normal girl, and on the right is her becoming king. I think that makes more sense.

  450. igyman on June 15, 2016 at 5:21 pm said:

    @superirate:
    I’ll pretend you’re being serious and not trying to troll people, but I’m afraid you’re the one that’s misinterpreting the scene and the dialogue, if you think “I” is the correct translation.
    In that sequence Saber is not talking about herself – she is giving her interpretation of Shiro’s and Archer’s motivations in that fight and comparing them to her own dreams and the choice she made. That’s why there’s a visual depiction of two Arthurias there – to show what she chose and what could have been had she chosen otherwise. Rewatch that sequence from the start at 05:30 and you might understand why “they” is correct.
    You should also take into account what Miura, the director of the UBW anime stated about his storytelling decisions – I believe he stated he wanted to have other characters, like Saber, provide their impression of Shiro and try to develop his character that way, rather than using his own inner monologues. I remember this as I was lurking around MAL at the time of the anime’s airing and reading through the individual episode discussions there. People were generally pissed that Miura did away with most of Shiro’s inner monologues and somewhere in there that quote from an interview with Miura popped up, directly related to the scene we’re discussing here.
    Finally, “Ichido, yume wo mita” is what Saber says in Japanese. I’m hardly an expert in the language, but that sounds pretty neutral to me to be translated as “Once, I had a dream”. Perhaps someone who actually knows the language can enlighten us all.

  451. Lectea on June 15, 2016 at 10:48 pm said:

    This is correct. Also, directly translating “Ichido, yume wo mita” isn’t helpful in this case. The subject of the sentence isn’t provided here, which isn’t altogether uncommon in Japanese, as this is often assumed to be understood from the context. And “mita” actually means “watched/saw” rather than “had”. “Ichido” means “Once”. “yume” means “dream”. “wo” is a grammatical particle (http://www.freejapaneselessons.com/lesson04.cfm) that functions as a direct object marker. It’s not as helpful as “wa” or “ga” would have been, as they are grammatical particles that indicate the topic and the subject respectively. So in this case “Ichido, yume wo mita” by itself is just “Once, [I/we/they, whatever the unprovided subject of the sentence is] saw/watched a dream”. This is why we need someone who knows and understands Japanese well (like UTW’s TLC!) to make sense of the sentence based on the context it’s in, and correctly translate it into “Once, they had a dream”.

    Glad you brought that up because that’s what I’m vehemently stating is wrong. She’s referring to herself. The whole point of that scene is her reflecting back on her life/coming to terms with herself and no longer regretting her decision to become king. It would not be nearly as powerful a message if she were referring to shirou/archer instead of herself. “Even if nothing but regrets remained” sums up her life -> “if I was able to achieve many of my ideals in the process, then…” she gets her closure. Reread and compare the two again and tell me which sounds better if the goal of the scene was to give saber closure?
    Igy: “she is giving her interpretation of Shiro’s and Archer’s motivations in that fight and comparing them to her own dreams and the choice she made. That’s why there’s a visual depiction of two Arthurias there – to show what she chose and what could have been had she chosen otherwise.”
    Right you are, and as said above it makes all the more sense that she was referring to herself when saying “Both”. Both referring to her life before, and after king (or her decision to become or not become king as Rustle said). The fact that the scene of her two selves was playing as she said this further backs up the notion.
    We’ve said our pieces, our opinions are set in stone. Unless there is a source such as the director chiming in on this, it will just be back and forth.

It wasn’t a scene that was meant to give Saber closure. I’ve also played the VN (twice), and it’s like Lectea just said, “the focus was entirely on Shirou’s perspective of his fight against Archer, with the vast majority being his thoughts and not anything happening externally. Saber was just kind of “there” but had no development in that route, since her focus was in Fate.”. The scene was NEVER about Saber, it was about Shirou and Archer.

    But when I think about it, it’s kinda weird for Saber to somehow know what Shirou dreamed of, let alone Archer who came from the future. Plus at one point, Archer IS Shirou. So to me, at least, Saber talking about THEIR dreams sound a bit weird considering we’re presented with scenes playing in Saber’s mind.
    I think, imho, Saber DID say that she saw a dream, and midway, her speech referred to Shirou and Archer. Otherwise, what’s the point of those Saber scenes we’re seeing during her monologue? So in a sense, she’s using her dreams as an analogy for Shirou and Archer. I think it’s pretty much that.
    This part is entirely my opinion and not trying to make it as a fact or anything. But the line, “ichido, yume wo mita”, honestly, it doesn’t sound anything like referring to Archer and Shirou, because when I imagine it being said by different characters in different anime and settings, it sounds like “once, I had a dream”. Even if you try replacing “yume” or “mita” with a different noun or verb, it’ll sound like “once, I (pastverb) (noun)”. It wouldn’t sound like referring to more than one person. Of course this is just my 2 cents.
    @Castor212 well usually if watching anime is what a person normally does, they’re bound to pick up the language. Maybe they won’t obtain the language properly, but the should at least be able to understand sentence structure. I literally just got into anime a bit more than a year ago and after wasting my time watching a whole bunch of different kinds of anime(my studies took a big toll, but I’m back tho), with SoL being a big part of what I watch, I can basically watch a SoL anime without relying too much on subs, unless difficult new words are being introduced. But that’s me.

    N1 through N5 refers to the 5 levels of the JLPT, the official worldwide Japanese-Language Proficiency Test. N1 is the most difficult one, indicating near-native levels of Japanese comprehension in both writing, reading, and speaking. N5 is the easiest one. Someone with an N2 would be considered very proficient in most aspects of the Japanese language indeed (N1 is extremely difficult, and most settle for an N2 or 3), so what Castor is saying is that irate is acting like he’s an expert at Japanese. Note that I am neither agreeing or disagreeing with him about that in this post, or making any implications about irate or his opinions one way or the other, I’m only explaining what (I interpret to be what) Castor is trying to say.

  467. @_Rustle_: lol no they don’t
    @Wayne: they use a multitude of fonts that aren’t by default on your machines. The easiest way is to use a tool like mkvtoolnix to extract the attached fonts and also the subtitle file from one of their episodes. Examining the subtitle file should tell you when they use which font and for what.

  468. Wayne on June 25, 2016 at 10:54 pm said:

    @Ein That’s actually why I’m asking. I use mkvtoolnix and aegisub to make subs all the time, but files like these prevent me from just extracting as is and at minimum result in the fonts being switched out and I can’t change them back. If there’s a way to extract the subs as they are into a separate sub file, which will play the subs exactly the way they do in the videos here, then please let me know.

  469. @Wayne: Do you mean you want to use the subs on a different raw source externally? The easiest would be to use mkvtoolnix to mux the subs and attach the fonts to the new source. Otherwise, if the .ass files are external to the video file, you may have to install the fonts on the target system first (not too sure about this one. I never play video files with a separate external sub file, I always mux them to the vid).

  470. Wayne on June 26, 2016 at 2:45 pm said:

    @Ein I usually mux them too, but I do sometimes try to tweak them first and unfortunately, the better quality the subs are the trickier it gets to keep them that way while working on them so these are really tricky to deal with.
    And “may have to install the fonts on the target system first” is why I asked about the fonts. I can mess with subs just fine, but I’m OCD about this stuff and want the subs to match how they are in the original videos.

  471. @Wayne: Sorry, I’m not sure what’s so tricky about it. Without really knowing what you are doing and what you are having issues with, I can’t really say.T
    so I finally decided to watch this after all this time (was waiting for UTW, but that dream is basically dead) partly because I wanted to know what the deal was with the translation arguments above. It turned out to be pretty simple, but the tl;dr is the translation is correct.
    First is ep 18, the use of “watch over you” over “observe” is correct here. While watch over you could imply protect, it does not mean physical protection. It’s like watching over your kid as he grows up, it doesn’t mean you are going to fight his own battles for him, just that you are going to watch over him. The implications here is that you are on his side. Saber is rooting for Shirou, despite not getting involved in the fight,she watches over him and wish that he comes out victorious. This is different from merely observing a fight, which has a neutral connotation. This line is also said after she mentions being Shirou’s shield, so it’s actually a pretty brilliant line.
    ep 21: The use of they throughout the whole sequence is right, because Saber is talking about herself and Archer. Keep in mind that throughout the fight, Saber is reminded over and over again that what she wants to do is essentially the same as Archer, that her fate is similar to Archer’s. She’s essentially seeing herself in Archer and this is what ultimately saves her in UBW route as opposed to Fate route. The VN doesn’t really focus on this, but the fact is, this fight is as important to Saber as it is to Shirou and Archer. Watch the scene again, Saber starts by thinking about Archer, and then gets flashback scenes of herself, because she sees herself as similar to Archer. The entire lines being discussed is her talking about both herself and Archer and applies to both of them (both of them had dreams, both of them were right, but both did not reach their desired outcomes and came away with regret) hence the use of they. The last line is actually special, and is said on the scene where we see Avalon (props to the Last Episode Saber reference), because this is basically her taking Shirou’s side. Unlike Archer, she realizes at this point that even if everything was for naught and all they had was regret, they had stayed true to their ideals. That despite not having reached their utopia, they should not erase what already happened, because despite the outcome, they were right. After the entire flashback scene, we see briefly that Saber has found her resolve. This scene also marks the turning point of the fight.
    Although I felt there were issues with the direction of the story sometimes, I felt that the interpretation of the fight was actually pretty good despite the obvious differences from the canon.

    An easy way you could make sure you get all the fonts is to include the original video (UTW UTW/FZ), uncheck all the things in the Codec section associated with the original video in MKVToolNix, and then add what the video and subtitle files you wanted to mux in the first place. This will keep all the attachments (font files) from the original.
    Alternatively, you could extract the fonts by following the instructions here: http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/350111-Ripping-font-files-from-MKV-s-(ASS)
    That’ll extract the fonts and you can manually add them as attachments in MKVToolNix. (If anyone has an easier way to extract the .tpp/.otp files, please tell me, because I feel like there’s an easier way through mkvtoolnix).

    To all the people arguing about the “I/They had a dream” scene.
    I would like to point out that Japanese, being the language that has no indication of who you are talking about unless you clearly state who you are talking about, is very vague in this regard. Did it occur to any of you that she might actually mean… both?
    Yes, usually when you omit the pronoun, the sentence refers to the speaker. But in this case it sounds like she’s talking about herself, and sees Shirou as her mirror image. Or talks about Shirou and sees herself as his mirror image. AFAIK Japanese language likes to leave this kind of vagueness so that the double meaning of the sentence will have more depth in it.
    Also, it is not unheard of that someone refers to themselves in third person, especially in this kind of sentimental flashback in anime. “The girl once had a dream” – said the woman who actually was the girl, and was currently reminiscing about those times.
    And you can’t argue that “I had a dream, both were correct” sounds awfully stupid, considering the “both” that are being referenced in the second part are nowhere to be found in the earlier part of the sentence. And the image on the screen is not enough to justify this, since we assume Saber speaks a normal human language, and therefore would never use a completely unnatural grammar, because she assumes the audience will know what she’s talking about. Nobody talks like this IRL, even if they’re trying to be deep and edgy. Mostly because it makes no sense. It either has to be “they had a dream” or “I had dreams”, but in the latter, it would probably be stated: “yume wo futatsu mita”. So just leave it.

    Alright. So I had a UBW BD batch before which was subbed by Pantsubber, an Indonesian sub group, which did something really nice to their subs. It’s when the NPs are used, the font would change to a heavily stylized, cooler-looking font. I think it was a really nice touch.
    So what I had in mind was to take those NP fonts and implement them into an English batch like Dekinai’s or UTW’s (S2 batch when?!). But it sounds difficult/complicated. I already have mkvtoolnix and subtitle edit, but I only have a few hours worth of experience with them.
    Do any of you guys, by chance, have any idea on what to do? You know, to transfer the font style and stuff. Cuz I’d love to be able to do what I’m trying to do. Oh yeah, the Indo batch was in 720p. Maybe that has to be taken into account as well. Thanks in advance.

  490. _Rustle_ It’s not hard if you know how to read the subtitle file. I’m assuming you know how to extract the subs and fonts from the Pantsubber release. Editing the subs require nothing more than notepad, that’s what I always use. Near the beginning of the subtitle file just before the actual subs start, there should be a section that lists all the fonts the subtitle uses along with tags for those fonts. This is a random example, but for instance, a line might say:
    Style: Ep Title,ITC Cerigo Std Medium,45,&H00000000,&HFFCFCFCF,&H009C9183,&H96000000,0,0,0,0,100,100,0,0,1,0,0,5,5,5,5,1
    This means that the font is “ITC Cerigo Std Medium” and this particular style is used for any lines that are tagged as “Ep Title” (which is typically…the episode title). Everything else are modifiers such as size, color, etc. Actually, at the beginning of that section, you should see a header that shows what each modifiers are. They look like this:
    [V4+ Styles]
    Format: Name, Fontname, Fontsize, PrimaryColour, SecondaryColour, OutlineColour, BackColour, Bold, Italic, Underline, StrikeOut, ScaleX, ScaleY, Spacing, Angle, BorderStyle, Outline, Shadow, Alignment, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, Encoding
    All you need to do is to replace the Fontname parameter with the name of the font you want in the other subs that you are editing. So in your case, you can extract the subs from the episode that uses the font you want, look up the lines in the sub with the font you want, and get the tag name. Then look at the Styles section and you can see which font it is using. Copy the entire section after Fontname and replace it in the subs you are editing. You may have to adjust size and such if you are copying a 720p sub to a 1080p sub.
    Then, once you’ve finished editing and are ready to use mmg.exe to merge the subs back, go to the attachments tab and add the font files that you have added in to the sub. This is so that the fonts are included in the mkv file. That’s really all you have to do.

    @Ein Okay thanks for the guide. Just a few questions. What’s a font file? I mean, where do I get them? OH! I extract the attachments from Pantsu’s batch? Are the font files in there? Thanks again.

  492. @_Rustle_ yes, just use mkvextractgui2 or mkvcleaver to extract the font from the mkv. It should be no different than extracting the subtitle file.

    Hmm. I haven’t visited in a while. I see the site is still up, even after all this time of inactivity and no S2 BD’s. Keep up the hope I guess, folks. 🙂 I hope we’ll get UTW subs for the HF movies one day…After they’ve come out that is…I can’t say I feel confident about it, but…one can dream…

  494. So I assume s2 is dropped at this point right?

  495. shahroze12 on September 8, 2016 at 12:00 am said:

    Geez it’ll be about a year next month since you guys decided to fansub this series. No matter of excuse can be applicable to this! At least care about the people who are waiting. Imagine if these were the HF movies…… This is just disappointing! A YEAR… ONE WHOLE YEAR to translate 12 episodes? and non of these episodes are even an hour long…… Ive been waiting patiently for sooo long! Fuck you guys.. playing with our emotions like this T^T

  496. Rokudaime on September 8, 2016 at 12:43 am said:

    @shahroze12
    They already translated and released all the episodes ages ago. It’s just the BD’s that haven’t been released. Get your facts straight. And the group is, for all intents and purposes, pretty much dead, and has been for a while, which was publicly announced by them here on the site a long time ago. Also, I’ve waited for up to 4-5 years at the most for archiving releases of shows before from other groups, I waited 10 years for the Clannad visual novel to get an official English release, etc, so, you know…there are always worse cases…Just get a BD release that uses UTW’s subs like I did, if you can’t wait any longer. Also, “Fuck you guys”? Really? That’s what you have to say to them after everything they’ve released for us over the years? You’re being a dick. -_-

  497. Leave it to leechers to be self entitled dicks. UTW doesn’t owe us shit and they don’t ever have to release another thing if they don’t feel like it. Are you paying them for it?
    There’s a ton of good releases out there that either uses the UTW subs for the BD or official subs. Get one of them and just watch it. There’s literally no point waiting for UTW’s release at this point. If they ever release it, great! If not? O well, nothing to cry about.

    Someone should sing the Futurama “I will wait for you” song in here

  499. Seriously, are you going to finish the fucking thing or not? Don’t say that you will when you wont, if you aren’t going to do it just say you wont instead of saying that you will and wasting everyone’s time. Im the laziest fucker on earth and even I can finish something within a year

  500. How about this:
    At October 2015, they are planning to do it. And they are trying. But then it got stuck and stalled ever since.
    What did you’ve done to them that makes UTW entitled to tell you their plan when they are disbanding anyway. Last, copying from Ein 2 just 2 posts above you:

    Rokudaime and co even share some of their works (well, Salembum that using UTW script) here, scroll through comment if you want

  501. Does anyone have a good link to one of the release that uses the UTW subs? I’d like to grab those.

  502. Reposting for those who want it since it’s been a few pages of comments since the last time.

    I just want you to know that UTW is still my favorite fansub site ever. Thank you for the beautiful subs you’ve shared with us. I’ll treasure it forever. <3 you to the moon and back guys! I sure will you guys a lot. I specially love your dedication in making the subs and romanji on OP and ED songs. They are just plain beautiful. I doubt there will be another like that but I still am thankful that you guys have been a part of me, well my hard drive to be exact haha. Hope you could still come back. GODSPEED!

  515. Well fuck me. Haven’t really watched anime in a few years and now when I decide it’s time to catch up, I find out that the hands down best fansubbing group has quit 1½ years ago.
    I know this is late, but eternally thank you for all you’ve done, and godspeed in your future endeavors.
