Sword Art Online 2nd Trailer

We decided to sub one of the Sword Art Online trailers as a test run of sorts:

About why we romanized NervGear the way we did:
Yes, we know it was romanized as “Nerve Gear” in an illustration in the 3rd volume. However, the term was also romanized as “NERVGEAR” (all caps) in a chapter the author published on the web. We had a long discussion about it and decided to go with NervGear (a stylistic choice of capitalization taking the later NERDLES of AmuSphere and MediCuboid into account). Of course, if there’s any evidence in episode 1 that suggests something else, we’ll be flexible and change the term accordingly.
As for the name of our joint with GotWoot (if this project goes through), we’ll be going with UTWoots, which won by a rather handsome margin of 1,100 or so votes from its nearest contender, GUTS. Thanks for voting!

@Yanoflies
Actually, there’s a big possibility that Fairy Dance a.k.a. books 3 and 4 would be included. Why? Because “Lyfa” (note, they wrote Lyfa and not Suguha) is part of the cast. She even has a voice actress ready. And really, 24 episodes for 2 LN volumes? That might be too long. AW finished 2 books in 12 episodes too. Well, I’m just speculating here, really. That said, I might be wrong, so yeah.

10. For the NervGear issue:
Over at Baka-Tsuki, the term we previously used was mainly “NERvGear”, due to NERDLES being represented as “NERv Direct Linkage Environment System”; in the web edition along with that "NERVGEAR" as mentioned. (It's unclear whether it's NERve or NERv, though. There seems to be different copies of the original text.)
There's practically no English form of the term used after it was published, so we ended up with "Nerve Gear" after consideration over that official illustration, the one and only place it was shown.
11. @Soranium
I don’t know, they could include some fillers (I personally wouldn’t really mind) and just do 1 and 2 (since 2 is just side stories to 1). 1, 2, 3 and 4 would be way too much for 24 episodes imo.

I agree with you, actually. As in, it would be fine by me if they ended the adaptation with just the Aincrad arc. However, as I said, Lyfa’s already been cast, and the fact stands that while one season doesn’t seem enough for two Light Novels, they actually are (see AW and Haruhi [No, not S2, endless eight was endless]. Also, 25 episodes for 4 F/Z novels. Then there’s BakaTest). It all depends on how well it’s presented.
I don’t know, though. They could also use the other side stories, like the ones from the Online Publication. I really hope they do. Because even though I’m saying this and that about Fairy Dance being included, I can’t help but shake off that feeling that it would be F/Z episodes 23 and 24 all over again. Oh well. Let’s leave that up to A-1 and just enjoy the role of end consumers.

22. For anyone pointing out the similarities to .hack, SAO was actually written at practically the same time period.
The author mentions being influenced by his own experiences of Ultima Online and Ragnarok Online.

@ Yanoflies: There was some parts shown from First Day, which was in Volume 8, so it’s probably Volumes 1, 2, the SAO parts of 8, and perhaps Aria in the Starless Night and some of the ME side stories.

I read a chapter or two of the Manga, but there’s just something about the premise of this story that rubs me the wrong way, and I can’t place what exactly.
It might be that it feels like the author is trying too hard to convince the audience that the stakes are “for real”, which is the kind of attitude that almost invariably leads to characters being used as disposable resources. I’m burnt out on that kind of lazy writing after having subjected myself to all of Blood+, the first 6 episodes of Blood-C, and the first 3 episodes of Another in the past year. I don’t mind significant character deaths, but I hate when they are just used for cheap shocks or to show how evil a villain is.
I am still going to watch at least 2-3 episodes of the anime before deciding if I’ll finish it or not, though. The trailer makes it look pretty good aesthetically and the soundtrack sounds solid, which are definitely points in its favor.

If you guys look at the voice cast, they have Sinon/Shino in there.
So the whole 25eps will probably have up to GGO arc.
In my opinion though, ALO was more on Kirito’s epicness and progressed the story quickly
while in GGO it was all fast paced battles in a short amount of time so they may be able to fit all the arcs in while the probability of cutting off some minor details.
Of course, they are all based on the official volumes.
They might also only reach up to book 6 at most.
Among other things, what was obviously added apart from the other volumes was
the side story, Aria in the Starless Night which is always shown in the trailers.

@k2m2_01 Although I enjoyed the ALO/GGO arcs, I would rather have a well paced and complete SAO arc for this season, than a rushed SAO to ALO to GGO marathon.

@k2m2_01
I liked the GGO arc a lot but I don’t think it will be included in the anime. Right now we can’t even be sure that ALO will be included or not. I have a feeling that the seiyuu of Suguha is there only for flashbacks or real life event screen times rather than ALO. As for Sinon’s seiyuu, it was for the SAO drama CD not the anime. Since they used the anime seiyuu for the drama CD they had to choose someone to voice Sinon too (because she was in it too).
Anyway I don’t like assuming so I’ll just watch the show and find out. But honestly I really don’t want them to rush three arcs in 25~26 episodes. I would be sad if the anime turned out not as good because they tried to fit too much stuff in one go.

50. Envoy on July 7, 2012 at 8:20 am said:

There is Sinon (Shino) voice cast because it’s in the CD drama, may be the GGO arc won’t be include in this season because it’ll be to rush for 24~26-episodes series. As for Lyfa (Suguha) which her voice cast is appear in the list in the trailer then it’s might be the ALO arc is include (judge from using her ALO’s name in the voice cast list)

But there is no definite prediction for this so we’ll just wait and see………

52. Cyphren on July 7, 2012 at 1:49 pm said:

I didn’t really enjoy the GGO arc to be honest, I felt it was a bit too different a setting from the previous two arcs. With this anime actually I was hoping they would have expanded the initial SAO part… There was a lot of missed opportunity in it simply because the author wrote it as a standalone and not an Arc like the following stories.
jumping from floor1 straight to floor75ish kinda sucked
There is so much more I feel they could have done in it (tho the feel of the short stories is a little off as well).
Got big hopes for the new Arc tho…

53. k2m2_01 on July 7, 2012 at 7:28 pm said:

Well, either way anything is fine with me as long as they make it as interesting as it should be.
If they add scenes that weren’t in the novels, follow the arrangement of the novels or just flatly follow the timeline is ok, but I also agree that they shouldn’t force 3 arcs in one whole series.
Still…, I’d like to see the epicness of Kirito in ALO. 😀

If you’re gonna sub this then I suggest going to http://www.baka-tsuki.org/project/index.php?title=Sword_Art_Online and read the first two volumes as well as any chapter that is related to SAO. it will help alot in your translation as long as cannon episodes are concerned.
Episode 1 was taken from the fist 1 or 2 chapters of Vol 1 the next episode will probably either be first day chapter in vol 8 OR the Aria in the Starless Night Side Story.
Read all of them it will help a LOT in translation of eps.
