I am very happy to present to all of you our offering for the Fall 2011 season: Fate/Zero! This series tells the story of the 4th Holy Grail War, precedent to the 5th as detailed by the original game of the franchise, Fate/Stay Night. You can jump straight into this series if you haven’t encountered anything Type-Moon before, but you might be confused at some parts, and you’ll also pretty much spoil the entire Fate/Stay Night plot for yourself.
Loli Rin almost gave me a heart attack from moe overdose, and Irisviel was so lovely that I had visual orgasms every time she appeared, but I decided to go with Loli Rin for the release pic since Irisviel will surely have a lot of screentime to come.
With just the first 1-hour episode, we’ve covered both the prologue and Act 1 of the original light novels, which would amount to about a third of the first book. How they’ll stretch out the rest of the material to accommodate 25 episodes should prove interesting.
We’re using Aniplex subs, but I’ve given them quite the editing makeover, hence the tag. The delay was due to some unfortunate problems we ran into with encoding; I did take the time to do an extra QC run, though. It also turned out the MBS cap wasn’t much better than the Tokyo MX initial airing, so we’ll be using the MX caps instead as it’s faster etc.
And that’s enough blogging from me. Please enjoy!
arEdit: The HD release is 10-bit. Please make sure your codecs/codec packs are up to date. If you see falling tiles or it looks like the video is on acid, you are probably using non-recent codecs and it would be a good idea to update them.

Please don’t drop from 10bit when the faggots in the Nyaatorrents comments inevitably start whining.

  15. Whether it’s 500MB or 1GB in size, 8-bit or 10, I don’t really care as long as it works. As long as the quality is nice and better than the RAW I watched earlier. Will be nice to actually understand what I’m watching too.

Valid complaints that 10-bit has with pretty much everything except the latest software on a modern PC is not whining. Not everyone can update, not everyone even uses a PC to watch the files. Backwards compatibility is important.

Then spend the thousands (if you’re lazy to buy the proper parts). Hi10P/10-bit IS a proper H.264 standard.
Seriously, you can build an i3/Llano-based platform for less than $500 and that would only take up to 65W during playback. That’s more than enough for a 10-bit, FullHD capable system.

Let’s assume your computer does not run tough video. If you’re spending thousands in a media center, you’re doing it wrong. You can spend $500 in a low-power laptop with a Win7 license and have it dedicated to media playing, including 10-bit 1080p. You can have it run updated Win7 + CCCP and you don’t need *anything* else. You can even keep it up to date by jacking it onto your LAN.
Feel dumb already for having spent $2k+?
Let’s assume your computer DOES run tough video. Move it near your HDTV, buy a 2 meter HDMI cable, problem solved.

There’s no need to build MPlayer. You can use the daily SVN PPA. Of course, it’s a daily build so they don’t keep stable versions around. If the code is trainwreck one day, you’ll have to come back and try again later. That said, I haven’t had any problems.
    https://launchpad.net/~motumedia/+archive/mplayer-daily
Won’t work with video acceleration, of course, so no more 5% CPU video playback. It’ll blow up if you even have it turned on. Set video output to xv.

A guide to 10Bit for the less tech savvy of you:
    1. Download both SMPlayer and mplayer2 (not 1, 2).
    2. Install SMPlayer like you normally would. Take note that this is just so mplayer2 has an interface.
    3. Put mplayer2 wherever you desire.
    4. Open SMPlayer and go to preferences.
    5. You should notice an option in general named ‘mplayer Executable’.
    6. Change the location of the executable (exe) to the mplayer2 exe.
Congratulations! You can now play 10bit using SMPlayer.
Trust me on this one. I unknowingly downloaded Coalgirls’ 10bit version of Yuru Yuri and had to learn how to play it.

  59. @Fsfrk true, but its h10p, meaning that its still preeetty big now..
@Dimorphic its always recommended playng fate/stay night, thpugh for properly understanding this, i think its enough to have read the fate route, so i guess its enough to watch the old anime or read the manga as well. though of course not gonna stop you from reading this, as its awesome!

You can’t be serious. The video track has a bitrate of like 1250 kbps. I’ve seen legion of SD encodes with higher bitrates. I almost fell off my chair when I looked at the filesize, already aware that the episode was twice as long.
Of course, seeing how many static scenes we have makes one somewhat aware of the reason for the small size, and the backgrounds seem to be blurred (what the fuck, ufotable? you go and make detailed backgrounds to then blur them? is that your disk-selling tactic now?), and I did spot what looked to me like combing and banding, but still, for its bitrate and the amount of detail in the show, the encode is nothing short of gorgeous.

Those with SMPlayer issues on Windows – and Linux – could always use UMPlayer (http://www.umplayer.com/) as their GUI. Especially since SMPlayer development stalled, like, two years ago and UMPlayer is the proper fork/continuation that picks up where it left off. UMPlayer also works fine with mplayer2, and is just an all-around better integrated and nicer-looking option, IMO (and I did use SMPlayer for years when I wanted a GUI; UMPlayer is far beyond being just a more up-to-date replacement, too, it’s very much the rightful successor). The only caveat is that you might have to mess around with the video and audio drivers being used or else it might crash on bad hardware, like VIA. No problems here with Nvidia and -vo gl2, though.
Ubuntu users can get UMPlayer through a PPA (https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/umplayer), and mplayer2 from another PPA (https://launchpad.net/~ripps818/+archive/coreavc), the latter of which I have not tested because I always build mplayer2 myself. The general methodology for installing them would be:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/umplayer
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ripps818/coreavc
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install umplayer
    sudo apt-get install mplayer2-build
I separated the install steps because I’m not sure which one gets installed first, and it might cause the wrong mplayer version to get used instead. UMPlayer should automatically see the mplayer2 executable and use it, since it installs as ‘mplayer’ (although you will have to answer a couple of dialogs concerning what version of mplayer it is and your language setting; it’s fine to tell it that you’re using 1.0rc4 even though you aren’t).

Are people really having this much trouble? I was already playing 10bit fine before I even knew it existed. And it runs smoother than 8bit. All it takes is updating codecs on a semi-regular basis (no fancy tricks or settings…), which is something you really should be doing anyway, for all sorts of reasons.
Also, my codecs are pretty dang stable (haven’t seen a bug nor crash anywhere), and I have no problem taking screenshots on MPC-HC, so…
P.S. There are still people who think they need VobSub? Seriously? That thing is, always has been, and always will be a pointless piece of crap. It’s commonly used by everyone who knows nothing about video and just uses whatever random shit someone spoon feeds them without questioning it.

Also, media boxes are a waste of money. There were better options out there before they were even invented.

  103. @Raze @DragoZERO
While the popular English translation for é”èĄ“ć”äŒš seems to be Mage’s Association, you can argue this one any number of ways given the original Japanese is a simple compound noun. The fact that it doesn’t even say é”èĄ“ćž« (“magus”) but instead é”èĄ“ (“magic,” as in the lesser magic or non-True Magic within the Type-Moon universe) means one could argue just as strongly for “Magic Association” or “Association of Magi” as they could the possessive form you’re arguing for. Hell, “Magic Association” would probably have the strongest legs to stand on given it’s the literal translation of an otherwise very simple compound noun.
In the end, meh, not a big deal. It’s not like ćźć…· suddenly became “Treasure Tools” or 英霊 suddenly became “English Spirits,” so it’s all good. 😉 It’s also completely understandable that UTW would want to settle on the translation most commonly found in the English-speaking fandom.
    If you -are- going to write it as Mage’s Association, though, on the basis that this is what the official Type-Moon English name for it is and/or on the basis that this is the term which the majority of English speaking fans use, then as much as I prefer the single-L spelling, I suppose that means you’re going to have to correct Ilyasviel at around 2m20s to Illyasviel. :p ^^;
Still going through it, but so far this is a solid translation with a lot of the smaller errors made by Commie (or Aniplex?) caught and corrected. Sometimes the erroneously-translated version sounds better than the real thing but I’m 100% for authenticity so go go UTW! 🙂

  111. 10 bit
Download the latest combined community codec pack and it will play the file just fine.
If you have an older version of CCCP, uninstall that first before installing. If you have a different codec pack and unsure if it supports 10bit or not, I would just uninstall it and download cccp unless you really need/like it.
As for the player issue, pretty sure it’s just people’s outdated codec. I mean I can run the file on Windows Media Player of all things, though you have to change a setting in haali media splitter for WMP to play 10 bit haha.

To those complaining and whining, I advise you to try this guide [http://imouto.my/configuring-potplayer-for-gpu-accelerated-video-playback-with-dxva-or-cuda-and-also-high-performance-software-decoding/] this is the best player i know so far, it makes the HD video much more HD, what i meant is more sharper and clearer. anyways if you’ll follow that guide, that’s still for 8-bit. But there’s a note for 10-bit there just Ctrl + F after installing and doing all the settings for 8-bit, and just do some minor tweaking to allow playing for 10-bit.

    rofl, Hi10.
You can’t compress a bit to less than a bit. That’s fucking retarded. You can’t have 0.5 of a byte. What the fuck is this shit?
These people claim to be giving a “higher” quality for less size. Say we have a 320MB 10 bit release and a 500MB 8 bit release.
There’s a 180MB difference between them; and 0.64% of the 10 bit release is composed of half bits.
Half bits DON’T EXIST! That’s 0.65 of the anime that DOESN’T EXIST!
Now only does it not exist, all those half bits have to be removed from the video while it’s playing.
Where do you think they go? On your hard drive, that’s where. And because they can’t exist, they can’t be moved or overwritten.
Noticed your HDD space decreasing recently?

  120. @Mr. Angry
    >Oh wow, I found this random post on 4chan! It must be true!

  121. I was waiting for your release specifically.
I’ve followed your work since you started subbing and definitely ranks in my top charts.
Thank you all very much for taking the time to sub this, and I look forward to your continued high-quality projects.

  122. >2011
    >still not using MadVR regardless of 8bit or 10bit releases
I seriously hope you guys aren’t doing this.

  123. Just finished watching your guys’ version. Overall, I found it very satisfying. Will probably stick with you guys barring any major hiccups in releasing future episodes. Two translation gripes which stood out to me were:
    (1) when Waver says 銏éčżă«ă—ă‚„ăŒăŁăŠïŒ, you translated it as “How dare he!?” This works contextually, but why did you opt out of the literal (and contextually still perfectly understandable in English) “Making a fool of me!”?
    (2) when Kirei says of Tokiomi’s “fax machine” (lol) that it is “unseemly” to him “to this day,” that particular word choice read so awkwardly. Why not “No matter how many times I see it”? Especially since that’s pretty much what he said in Japanese (䜕ćșŠèŠ‹ăŠă‚‚)?
These are small gripes, though, especially since this show is beyond my ability to fully comprehend without the training wheels that are fansubs. So thanks very much for picking this up and providing us with a visually-stunning file with high-quality subtitling. I appreciate it and will probably be selecting you guys for my Fate/Zero needs as well as recommending your version to my friends and colleagues.

    Wow… Just wow…
1 hour of downloading VLC, mplayer2, re-updating codecs, getting CCCP, etc; nothing.
3 minutes to get and setup CoreAVC3; everything. The hell? Whatever, I’m just happy it worked.
Also: “Loli Rin almost gave me a heart attack from moe overdose, and Irisviel was so lovely that I had visual orgasms every time she appeared” which were promptly lost the moment Sakura made her appearance. Just be glad this doesn’t capture her teenage years. Ugh.

  125. The easiest way to watch it is probably to use a nightly build of VLC media player (the 1.2 development version). On Windows, download a packed file from http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win32/last/ and unpack it, go to the folder and start the player. No need to install anything (codecs are included).
However, I’ve noticed that it is computationally more demanding. If you have a weak computer, you may be unlucky.

  126. It’s a shame there is no 8bit version. Guess I have to use another group for this. If I were to use 10bit I might as well get faster subs.

  127. If it doesn’t work on my latest CCCP then it’s not for me. (it’s working fine but I can still see faults here and there, which is completely pointless if you got a 500mb file just to watch a faulty video)
Going for Avi then, hopefully that one is okay, but judging by the size, ugh.

  128. Just update your fucking CCCP and done. If not, grab the .avi.

    1) Impossible to take screenshots, not to talk about fast shots.
You should use goddamn unrelated tools to take a shot, like “pause, then quit fullscreen, then shot, then go back”

    2) Vobsub doesn’t work with madvr, so u can not take screenshot with subtitles on it.

    3) Worst of all, subtitles dissapear right after video gets paused.

Regarding b,I don’t know what is the current default, if you ever experience subs looking horrible big or out of the place (specially if they are loaded externally, e.g.: ass with the same name of file) you are using the internal subtitle of mpc and you should disable and use vobsub. Because it’s not an official UBW release.

  169. On Mac OS X, MPlayerX plays back 10-bit files fine. One can find it on App Store.
Supposedly MPlayer OSX Extended also works on 10-bit files, but I have run into problems during playback with it in the past.

  170. From the filesize it looks like 7se7en transcoded using similar settings to what I provided.
Frankly I was quite surprised at the file size when I transcoded it – SSIM, PSNR and side-by-side comparison of a few sections indicated that the 10-bit and transcoded 8-bit were pretty much visually identical.

  171. BTW … us “douchebags” as a whole *do not watch anime (or other media) on our Windows computers*. I have a dedicated anime-watching room, with an XBMC-Live HTPC, good-sized TV, very comfortable lounge with side-table for popcorn, drink, etc …
I have zero problem playing back 10-bit on my “work” computer – an i7 860. Latest ffdshow-tryouts nightly, latest MPC-HC, latest Haali, latest madVR (though I don’t need to use it since ffdshow-tryouts does the job). But I don’t use it to watch TV!

@Anon what are you talkign about. 10-bit small difference? you get 720 p or 1080p quality with a filesize your normally only used to for realy old or 480/360p anime! if tahts not totally worth it, then what is?

@Aelie – You need Pigoz’ MPlayer2 binary update for MplayerOSX Extended for it to work.
@guibin – no it promised quality, this is a huge ass episode, lots of movement = larger file, other groups are using a lower bit rate.

I know this isn’t really the place to post it (this comment will probably be deleted if there are “comment rules” laid out), but does anyone here know how to turn on hardware accelerator with CCCP while playing Hi10P media? When using the latest CCCP with default settings, all Hi10P stuff runs fine, but I notice that my CPU is doing all the work, ie. the FFDShow Video Encoder (red icon) shows up on corner of my taskbar. When I play other non-Hi10P media, the red icon doesn’t show up, indicating my GPU is doing the video encoding, while the audio is left to the CPU.

  187. @jay
I think that’s because 10bit stuff is software only. At least with my CoreAVC 3.0.1, it is also software only and they mention on their website “Both DXVA and CUDA do not support 10-bit.” Does not really matter much for me at least, though – I still get only around 5% CPU load.
Anyway, thanks for this release. Looks like an awesome series 🙂 And while I can understand the complaints of those who use some streaming device (BD player, etc.) and are having problems now, I’d guess that 90% of the people complaing here could watch the 10bit version just fine if they just got off their arse and did a clean reinstall with fresh codecs. But that’s simply how many people are, “I can’t be arsed to update my computer, so if something new comes out and fails on my PC, it is YOUR fault!”. Eventually they would have had this problem anyway when other groups make the switch, it’s just that UTW are among the first to do it.
And to be honest, I can’t really understand how people can stand watching fansubbed stuff via a BD player/streaming box. Whenever I tried it on my LG BD player or via the internal player software of my TV, I could watch the video, but the subs were just fail (not shown correctly/not shown at all). The only really good way of watching anime on a TV is by just plugging your PC/a notebook in via a HDMI cable.

  188. Leon-Gun on October 3, 2011 at 1:18 am said:

One last time: Video Acceleration does not support Hi10P. That’s why you’ll run into problems if you keep DXVA on while running Hi10P files. There’s nothing anyone can do here since this is entirely the blame of the hardware makers dragging their asses and not supporting formats that have been developed for six whole years. I dare say six years should have been enough for them to catch on but alas it seems unless encoders don’t mass migrate to new technology companies just don’t give a shit.

I don’t follow it exactly in that I don’t use the LAV filters and don’t see the need to deselect all the internal filters, just the ones the DXVA related ones but if you are confused then just follow it exactly. If you still have issues after following that then you have a hardware problem, plain and freaking simple. Either that or you have a conflict being drawn on YOUR END.
Keep the pace priority status on this one UTW. Excellent work and the only choice for subs for this show imho. On a side note, this is why ufotable is king, the animation is as good as it gets and this is tv broadcast.

  212. @somebody, I’m sorry to say, but fansubbers never supported watching anime on plastic toys (or portable devices as a less derogatory term). It just so happens that 8bit h264 stuck around long enough with the rise of the tablet and smartphones, fansubbers always say that only and ONLY CCCP (or K-lite like Doki) with MPC is guaranteed to work with their releases, nothing else.

  213. All I can say is… Thank You Thank You Thank You Thank You Thank You Thank You Thank You Thank You Thank You Thank You ^^

What you have is an isolated incident. I’ll go another step for future readers that the video is fine too as well as the timing of the subs. The “new” computer comment is pretty irrelevant since I don’t have a “new” computer and I can play this seamless.

  216. @NakkiNyan: I installed that binary update, and I now have MPlayer OSX Extended handling 10-bit files just fine. I will probably go back to using MPlayer OSX Extended.

  222. @Mithgol the Webmaster: Good hint. I think an 8bit release makes a lot of sense, especially for the stand-alone player fraction. True, they could switch to XviD, but switching from HD to SD would be a huge step backwards for them. I think there is overall not much gain from 10bit at this time and that it should be reserved for 1080p enthusiast encodes. 720p should be kept compatible with consumer devices and bearable for slower machines, as even if people had to switch back to it from 10bit 1080p, that would not be as bad as from HD to SD.
Good arguments against 10 bit are given in comments #90 and #92 here: http://www.nyaa.si/?page=torrentinfo&tid=249758#c81496
As it stands, until recently, people made a non-issue of file size. Now, 10bit shrinks file size but introduces compatibility issues or makes slow machines choke, while quality-wise not really anything is gained.

  230. And btw, people complain because 10bit is not supported NATIVELY yet, we have to download cccp or coreavc 3.01 to play it.
If MpC-HQ will support 10bit natively with internal filter i’m sure that complainers stop to complain. But seems that MPC developers are reluctant to update the internal filter, i don’t know why. Maybe they will do later.

@afun: if you’re watching it somewhere else you should have expected your lame hardware to fall behind at some point. That’s the main problem with hardware-based compatibility. Don’t blame the groups for moving forward, blame the hardware makers for being so reluctant to move forward as well.
All H.264 Profiles have been developed for years, just so happened no one bothered to move ahead and only really bothered using the most basic of them.

  234. @Leon-Gun
    >Don’t blame the groups for moving forward
If i can see a difference between 8bit and 10bit i can agree with you, but here is no any noticible difference.
I think groups nowadays forgot that they are existing for users and not users existing for them.

  235. It’s called a batch file and some encoders, and there are free solutions and/or GUI interfaces for most if not all of them. Reencode and remux your own copy in whatever format you need. That way you can even set it up so that every single file plays on your tablet/smartphone/WDTV/Boxee/whatever. Yeah it takes some research and time but these guys are giving you quality files to work from, and the weight of support for playing solutions that are explicitly unsupported by the fansub group FALLS SQUARELY ON THE SHOULDERS OF THE ONE USING THAT SOLUTION. At the end of the day you are being given free of charge something that has taken significant amounts of man-hours to complete.
If a little extra work on your part is enough to make you jump ship, then you’re being lazy and the issue is with you. There is absolutely nothing stopping you from handling your comparatively esoteric hardware yourself, or putting up with Xvid. I watch UTW subs because in general the quality of the translation and the encode is excellent. That’s enough to make me deal with minor inconveniences like file conversions for my quirky hardware.
I reinstalled KLCP TODAY in 10 minutes on my home theatre box (cobbled together from spare parts most acquired for free) to watch this. It took less time to set up than it took to download the episode. And I plan to reencode it myself to 8 bit for my shitty laptop. Because I knew when I bought that laptop that if DXVA couldn’t handle a video I’d be pretty much screwed. And that’s my own issue and my own playing solution to support, not UTWs.
Obviously, if you’re making an honest attempt and running into install issues, this isn’t directed at you. But simply throwing profanity about when you run into issues blaming 10 bit and UTW for using it isn’t going to get you any tech support or sympathy.

  236. Even after installing CCCP and using CCCI to check if there were any conflicting codecs there’s still some artifacting and random color distortions at times, any suggestions?

  237. Personally, my first recommendation would be to give K-lite Codec Pack Mega a try. The latest one plays this fine, though yes UTW only supports CCCP. It’s also possible your system is slightly underpowered or something is hogging your processor time in the background. Pull up task manager and look at how much your processor is running when you’re sitting at the desktop. Also, XP, Vista, or 7? And what kind of graphics chip? It could be an issue with what output settings you’re using.

  238. Windows 7, Graphics chip is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M, processor is an Intel Core i7.

  239. Also it isn’t as if the artifacts are constant or all over the place, they’re always at very specific locations in the video, but for like 85-95% of the video it’s fine quality wise. It’s just that the 3-5 times it does artifact it’s incredibly noticeable.

  240. Is hi10 not playable in WMP? Before you ask, YES I have the latest CCCP and YES hi10 plays perfectly fine in my version of MPC.
But I’m wondering why it doesn’t play in WMP. All I get is a black screen. Any help?

just follow that exactly ( works faster than cccp ) and significantly better than the internal filters
comes with cuda acceleration ( for nvidia gpus )

  249. @proto: that should be tons and tons of processing power. If you can’t make K-lite or CCCP work take a shot at the link listed in phossil’s post as I’ve tested it and it works, it’s just a bit more involved. Also, take a check on Nvidia’s website for updated graphics card drivers.

  250. Updated my graphics card drivers and that didn’t fix it unfortunately. Tomorrow i’ll look into the Mad-VR method to see if it is my long sought solution. Just sort’ve frustrating for me, since by all indications my PC is capable of handling the 10bit media especially after going through the CCCP and CCCI (To check if there were any codec conflicts) method. But I guess I’ll just have to pin all my hope on this.

  251. You can also cobble together your own setup of the SMPlayer frontend from here: http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/downloads.php?tr_lang=en – the one *WITHOUT MPLAYER* and the latest mplayer2 backend from here: http://mplayer2.srsfckn.biz/ – one marked latest.
Extract the smplayer archive, and then place the files in the mplayer2 archive in the folder you get from extracting smplayer. Run SMPlayer from that folder, and then go to Options->Preferences->General where it says “mplayer executable” , click the box next to the file path, and browse to the location of the mplayer2 executable you placed in the smplayer folder. *Should be mplayer2-20110921 or something similar*
Keep in mind that this does not set file associations, make icons, or anything else, and that if you move the SMPlayer folder you’ll have to reset the mplayer executable location.
This does work, I just tested it out. Not my usual method and not ideal, but a possible option barring all else.

So I can run the Hi10p files just fine after updating to the latest version of CCCP. My issue is what are the benefits of regular 8-bit vs 10-bit, cause I can’t seem to see the difference visually. I noticed that the 720p 8-bit file was smaller and I didn’t notice any significant improvements in the 10-bit file, so if somebody would like to give me some good side by side screen shot examples of why 10-bit is better and worth the larger file size, that would be great, cause I’m not convinced until then.

  259. CCCP dithers everything down to 8-bit when playing 10-bit files due to the shitty ffdshow its using, madVR is really the best way to play 10-bit right now, but a good compromise is the LAV filters included in K-lite. 10-bit basically allows better compression (so that means instead of 350mb at crf22, we can get 350mb at crf20), and reduces banding. Other than that 10-bit has little visual difference. You don’t need to be convinced, but come the next year, alot more fansubbers will be.

Yah it will be dealt with for ep2. I was tired by that point.

  263. I am seeing acid on mine a few times ><…
I am used Kmplayer (updated) but it still shows acid.
I've used DivX players too, shows less acid but still has acids.
Which kind of players are recommended?
I've looked at LHN9's comment, though it looks far too complicated and not ideal as he or she says.

  264. …..
So what I did was I downloaded VLC player and installed this thing from
    http://www.cccp-project.net/download.php?type=cccp
    and
    http://codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_mega.htm
turns out there is no acid anymore…
I’m not sure it that was the reason why though…..

And don’t forget to set multi-threads properly in Preferences, Performance, Threads for decoding (MPEG-1/2 and H.264 only)

  267. @GGG: Ah yes. Noticed that after I packaged it back up into a zip file. Left it that way so it will at least work on whatever system people try it on.
I stuck it up on megaupload if people want it, but I’m not sure what UTW’s policy on those kinds of links are. Guess I’ll know if my post gets removed.
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=E5S69Z3T
Extract it somewhere sensible, and run the smplayer exectutable. Open a 10bit file from within smplayer. It should work. If you want, you can fix the multi-threading to read how many cores you have on your computer, but it isn’t strictly necessary.

  268. NVM it doesn’t save the file path between systems. You’ll still have to select the correct mplayer2 file from the options menu as per my previous instructions if you want to use it. Sorry about that.

Already over 270 comments and no one’s discussing about the series. Everyone’s busy (pick at least one):
    a) trolling Hi10P;
    b) teaching people to play Hi10P;
    c) trolling anti-Hi10P trolls;
    d) hating;
    e) trolling haters;
    f) secretly laughing at everyone else;
    g) doing something else related to the above (please specify).
This is like the one post with most comments and 10% of them are about the series itself. Wow.
Hi10P is evil, MKV is evil, H.264 is evil, softsubs are evil. Let’s go back to fully hardsubbed WMV3+MP3 on AVI releases, shall we? OHWAIT, but this internet thing is extra evil, so let’s go back to distributing our stuff on CDs… Oops, I meant VHS tapes.
I’m sick and tired of whiners who would rather stop the times than be arsed to follow a guide and update their software. UTW, go ahead with Hi10P, and don’t turn back; those who wish to stay behind can as well be left behind.

  271. Haxton Fale on October 4, 2011 at 4:26 pm said:

Question here. Why did you translate Byakuya’s magical energy as ‘mana’? He can’t have any mana as it is energy withing the atmosphere, so it meant either ‘prana’ or ‘od’. Or simply ‘magical energy’, which they all mean. I think most people who watch this show already know a bit about Nasuverse and I’m a little surprised that nobody pointed this out yet…

  272. If you look at http://utw.me/2011/09/29/fall-2011-plans/comment-page-1/#comment-25382 you’ll see that ar said «If it affects enough people I might consider doing a slightly later 8-bit release, but it definitely won’t be at release time due to encode time».
What I was going to do was to sit and wait patiently for that later 8-bit release. However, it’s already two days since the 10-bit release, and thus I’m ready to believe that ar has quit his original possibility of the above said intention. So I’m getting Kanjouteki’s 8-bit 720p hardsubbed repack of UTW script from http://www.nyaa.si/?page=torrentinfo&tid=249856 torrent. Technically it’s still UTW, but better fit for my single-core Celeron 2.4GHz and DXVA on PowerColor HD4670 1GB DDR3 AGP videocard.
I’m posting the link here in the hope that helps my 8-bit fellows.

  273. Please STOP encoding with 10bit! It breaks DXVA playback. It breaks network streamer playback (WDTV Live). It breaks phone playback. There’s all these downfalls and no real benefit. Slightly smaller files means nothing in today’s multi-terrabyte storage solutions. Yes, I can play 10bit video files on my PC but you literally broke playback on everything else and it’s just ludicrous to do it. Other groups jumped blindly on the 10bit bandwagon without putting forth any thought as to what this would do and here UTW, in some dimwitted desire to make sure their “e-penis” measures up, blindly followed suit.
Shame on you. Shame on you all.

  274. If you’ll reference my post a page or so back, UTW explicitly says that they ONLY support using CCCP on a PC. Every other playback solution you’ve listed is an issue they have no obligation to provide support for. And every issue you’ve listed can be remedied with a bit of research and time on your part. And XviD will work beautifully in all of those situations if you simply won’t spend the time fixing your own problems.

  275. Abi Normal on October 4, 2011 at 7:54 pm said:

His issue there, LHN9, is that it’s time he has to take out of his busy schedule to fix, where he could instead invest that time at whining to UTW to take time out of their even busier schedule and fix it for him. Gotta love this “fansub groups exist for me” attitude going around lately.

  276. Leon-Gun on October 4, 2011 at 8:26 pm said:

@Haxton: I totally missed it but yes, it shouldn’t be mana. The best compromise would be to call it magical energy in order to not alienate those who aren’t that well-versed in Nasuverse terminology (since prana is a term that will likely confuse many). Using the term mana will bring trouble down the line if there’s parts where the plot differentiates between Mana and Od (like in Heaven’s Feel climactic battles).

  277. 10-bit release you guys did is excellent. Don’t have any problems with it. Thanks for the hardwork.

  278. @Leon-Gun: And it likely will become an source of confusion if they adapt Heaven’s Feel like the show so far is heavily hinting towards. Which is fine by me!

Just follow this guide 100% and get Reclock
Your TV should be something like akin to
    Source -> mpc-hc ->
    —lavsplitter -> lav video (CUDA/Nvidia) -> madvr -> TV
———–lavsplitter -> ffdshow audio -> reclock -> TV
(set to 16-235 range ) for the TV
    you only need lavfilter / madvr / mpc-hc ( 3751 ) ffdshow 9-22-2011 /reclock

  286. I’m not even trying to troll here but can someone explain the benefits of hi10? Supposedly it increases quality, but I can’t see any difference at 720p at least. Was it really worth switching over so soon?

  287. @Hello
    It’s a 48min episode … 500mb
look at the other utw releases … 400+mb for 24min with a 8bit release
so you either get better quality with the same bitrate (in this case a 800+mb episode) or you get the same quality with 30-40% less filesize

  288. I mean filesize not bitrate oops
so better quality with the same filesize as a 8bit release or less filesize with same quality

  289. Playback is fine for me with the latest versions of MPC-HC with CoreAVC.

  290. Dear UTW group,
though being thankful for your previous releases,
I have decided not to upgrade my PC for the sole purpose of watching your 10bit-only Fate/Zero,
and thus I am willing to watch Hatsuyuki’s http://hatsuyuki-fansubs.com/releases/70-sora/763-c3-01.html instead (which is 8bit).

@Leon-Gun It’s not really a matter of VLC being any good, it’s just a good indicator of what’s “widely supported.” Because it’s open source, often when VLC picks up some codec, it’ll filter down into other projects like Boxee. I rarely use VLC, but it’s my backup when I really want to watch something and it’s not running quite right.

  296. Btw, in Nasuverse, there are two kinds of maryoku, Mana and Odo.
So I think it’s wrong to translate Maryoku as Mana.

  297. Haxton Fale on October 7, 2011 at 5:25 pm said:

  299. Leon-Gun on October 7, 2011 at 11:58 pm said:

@NHK: this is actually pretty important, especially when they talk about a Magus magical strength. Od is basically the magi’s equivalent of a power level (along with the amount and quality of their magic circuits).

  300. ahh, i wish kariya wouldve won..
anways, would you guys consider re-encoding UBW for 10-bit? sicne your initial release is quite, well, BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG…

  301. @Leon-gun: Agreed. If a character were to say “Your maryoku is not enough to defeat me”, translating maryoku as Mana would contradict everything. Because mana is the magical energy that exist in the air, while od/odo is the magical energy a magus produce.

  302. Leon-Gun on October 8, 2011 at 5:24 am said:

@NHK: Well, there’s more factors like how much prana a magus can process through his magic circuits without backlash (and how many circuits he has to begin with) but overall yes, Od determines how much strength he has as they use their own magical energy to initiate the spell (mana is used to mantain the spell in place).
Maybe the reason it bugs me so much is because Fate/Stay Night actually explains the subcategories of magical energy several times.

  303. I’m well aware of the distinction between the two types of maryoku, thank you very much. From my understanding, マナ (natural mana) and ă‚Șド (internal mana or “Od”) are the exact same thing except they differ only in where they exist (the former is mana produced by and existing in nature, and the latter is mana as existing in the Mage). Od is simply mana that a Mage’s magical circuits have filtered and collected from the external surroundings (ie. natural mana); a Mage’s magical circuits do not create mana per se. There is no characteristic difference at all between natural and internal mana (read: they are the exact same thing) other than where the Mage got the mana from once channeled to perform magic.
My decision to translate maryoku as “mana” was a conscious one. I think we can all agree that mana is linguistically equivalent to maryoku as used in the Nasuverse. “Magical energy” is long and pedantic, and given how often maryoku is mentioned in the Nasuverse it’s pointless and retarded to use the longer, less commonly-used term in English when there is no real need to. Should the distinction between the two types of mana even need to be made, distinguishing between the two is easy, like I already did in the above: simply translate マナ as “natural mana” and ă‚Șド as “internal mana”. Nothing of value is lost, given that マナ and ă‚Șド are simply types of maryoku.
And let’s not even talk about using “prana” (as suggested by that w/e TypeMoon wiki thing). I’m not using some random Indian substitute term just because it’s somehow wrong to use mana when maryoku == mana anyway.
I do believe I made it quite clear in my TypeMoon translations that my experience has been entirely rooted in the original Japanese and that I don’t care very much for how the terms have been previously translated. Just because it’s been done before, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s 100% correct and I have to agree with it. Neither am I going to waste my time reading up on how the terms have been translated before when differences exist between official and fan translations (and even between separate fan translations) of the terms anyway.
