OMFG A LOLI RIN EPISODE MY NUTBLADDER OWWWWWW MY HEART HHNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
They sure did deviate from the novel a lot though; the content for this week’s episode is practically original. I guess the studio peeps couldn’t withstand the full force of the divine phenomenon called Loli Rin either.
Please enjoy!

29. @SupraGuy since we Germans and the japanese have actually more languagesimilarities than japanese and english 8at least regarding the pronounciation of a,e,i,(o an u though are mostly pronoucned like the german ƶ and Ć¼ in japanese, but at keast we d have those) so ive always been wodnerign just WHY they still seem to have more difficulty pronouncing german in anime than english…
(btw he little german used in the new last exile series is pretty decently ronounced, though tid usage is kinda weird, naming a bunch of skypirate-ships after german names for vegetables.. thats about as random as oyu can get.)

I feel so sad, looking at loli-Rin… with the knowledge that in ten years, she’s going to get banged by the biggest dipshit in the universe.

40. Wait, you think -Shirou-‘s the bad one? Have you played Tsukihime?

41. @Marelt: You made me spit my drink out through my nose that made me laugh so hard. “Biggest dipshit in the universe”! RICH!

42. But lemme tell you, bourbon out the nose is not the most pleasant experience, especially when you are essentially laughing and crying in pain at the same time.

43. Replying to Kailas:
The change is minor and of little impact, really… Rin DOES go out to save a friend of hers the way she did in this episode, yet we didn’t see her at school that much nor did she confront Caster’s master, if my memory is correct. The scene of the german-speaking book is also inexistent in the novel, I believe – at least I cannot remember it.
She did find one of Caster’s monsters, though, and she DID have her loli ass saved by Kariya. Kariya’s talk with Aoi also happened in the novel, so the important stuff was kept intact.
I firmly believe this episode was made to be a relief before the next episode, which WILL be extremely epic and will make countless pants explode from the sheer amount of jizz overflowing from within.

I’m not a loli… I don’t think (o.0)? Anyway, I thought this episode was off the charts badassery. Best of the season so far, Second best was eps 8. In my opinion, this episode is better than the corresponding scene in the book, since it’s not only much less depressing but also gives Rin a chance to be actually do something interesting instead of being 100% ineffectual as she was in the book.
My one complaint is that they could have used one of her friends from FSN if they weren’t going to kill the friend off. This story means that the friend is AWOL instead of dead by the time that FSN rolls around (although, to be fair, it isn’t unrealistic for gradeschool friends not to keep in touch).

55. Actually, the German in this episode was pronounced pretty decently. Too bad the grammar, choice of words and overall composition of the phrases are shit.
I wish Typemoon (or whoever makes those Fate-Animes) could at least employ someone who’s studied German, not just some random High-school chap…

56. @Drano funny thign is, the one type-moon story taht doesnt have german in soem main magic phrases or anything, “CANAAN”, actually had ONE scene where there was german (during a scene where news of different countries where shown) and it was decently pronounced with decent grammar (was only one short sentence though)…

57. I’m glad they deviated from the LN. But I’m a sucker for happier endings and this is one of the few things they can change without affecting the plot in any way what-so-ever.

58. Marelt on December 4, 2011 at 8:05 pm said:

@Tern
Yes, I have played all five paths of Tsukihime (the visual novel, I haven’t read the manga) and I always thought Shiki was a pretty decent guy (protagonist Shiki, that is, not asshole brother Shiki), aside from the few occasions where he goes berserk (and you can argue that he’s not really in control during those).
I’ve also got through a fair bit of the Fate/Stay Night Visual novel and then I gave up in disgust because I resented being forced to roleplay as Shirou. He’s far from the most evil character, but at least the villains, you are supposed to despise. Shirou, you are expected to sympathize with, but I just can’t. It’s not even a case like Shinji Ikari (Evangelion), where they deliberately make the protagonist unsympathetic for dramatic purposes. They actually expect me to like this guy and then present me with someone who I would be legally entitled to give wedgies if I met him in real life.

59. Nick J on December 4, 2011 at 8:25 pm said:

@Marelt
No doubt that FSN can be a bit polarizing (in terms of how you like Shirou or not). Hey, I’m just in it for Saber.

60. @Marelt and @Nick J well personally i see the fate-route as a kidn of graduation test–get over it withotu turnign away because of whimpy shirou, and go to the next routes where he gets better after all^^ (well of course the fate route itself has some good points (saber is there, and shinji dies, and ilya survives),but well… )

61. They really made the pace slower, the last few eps of this first half will probably be off-the-charts awesome.

62. @Break
That reminds me. I still haven’t finished Heaven’s Feel. :facebrick:

63. Was C3 really dropped by UTW

64. @Nick J, this show is pretty much spoilers for the entire route then, go finish it quickly! xD

65. Read the full post, guys, C3 was NOT dropped XD they were kidding, nothing more.
@Nick J – Heaven’s Feel is epic, finish it šŸ˜€ it is perhaps the best route of the three haha

Although it deviates from the original, it is still a nice Rin’s Adventure!
(though still can’t compare to SUPER M*RIO ADVENTURE)
next week, THE KINGS’ CONFERENCE!!
67. The only filler episode so far. Leave it to the lolikon army to praise this as one of the series’ best. (Oh puh-LEASE. Maybe you guys should look ELSEWHERE if the only reason you’re in this is for the little girls instead of the real women, of which Fate/Zero has plenty.)
Didn’t like how they implied that a 6-year old child could completely kick a veteran serial killer’s ass like that. Destroying his magical bangle, fine, that I buy. Uryuu’s a total newb when it comes to magic and so it’s easy to imagine that the fight boiled down to Rin vs. the prana that Caster had put inside of the bangle. But am I really supposed to buy that this young adult serial killer can’t even manage to grab a hold of ONE fleeing child? Out of the DOZENS running up that stairwell? C’mon. I had to suspend more than a little disbelief when watching this scene. Was totally expecting all episode long that Caster and/or Uryuu were going to grab a hold of Rin but that Rin was then going to be rescued by either Kariya or else by Archer. (Yeah, I give Gil too much credit. lol) You could say “Well that’s how it happened in the end!”, but not before Rin successfully evacuates every child -AND- manages to not get picked off herself.
Criticisms aside, I enjoyed how the episode explored Rin’s relationship with her father. She spoke lovingly and/or highly of him in FSN, so it was good to see how Rin, through the eyes of both a child and a daughter, could have possibly come to see Tokiomi this way given what Tokiomi has been like in front of OUR eyes all show thus far. I also really loved what little screentime Uncle Kariya got. After Team Rider, Team Berserker’s probably the one I’m most fascinated in and inclined to root for.
If the sneak peek for next week’s episode isn’t as misleading as the previous sneak peek had been, it looks like we’re going to get a healthy heaping of both Team Rider and Team Archer. I look forward to it.

@743
Nice on identifying those Reijus. To this date I can only recognize Berserker’s Reiju.

70. It’s not that hard, Nick. O_o This is something you should have passively picked up by like Episode 3 or 4. The people talk when their command spell is in front. So like, in this week’s sneak peak, even if you couldn’t recognize the three reiju, you should have picked up that they were Waver’s, Kiritsugu’s, and Tokiomi’s given that it was Rider, Saber, and Archer who spoke.
Well, you’ll pick it up eventually … maybe. O_o

71. woooot! Loli Rin ep and next the 3 Kings? damn if it wasn’t finals week I would be anxious for next week’s ep

72. @Marelt
Hm, I can see where you’re coming from. I suppose Shiki’s not that bad if you ignore the ero-scenes (and I guess in a Nasu work, that’s what you’re supposed to do…) I’m surprised you consider Shirou a protagonist you’re intended to sympathize with, though. Yes, he’s pretty bad in the Fate route, but that’s the one where he gets the least development. I don’t think “that” Shirou, the one who’s essentially a selfless doll, is intended to be sympathetic; that’s why the other two routes focus on turning him into an actual person.
Of course, if you’re speaking from the perspective of having played up through Heaven’s Feel, I can’t say much more. He certainly isn’t easy to like, but I found the other characters more than interesting enough to make up for it.

73. @Nick J well its easier picking up the reiju’s when you think about their designs-they are usually somehow designed to look n a waay related to the servant–kiritsugu’s “saber” reiju looks like a cross/sword, tokiomi’s “archer” reiju resembles a bullseye, and so on.

74. @Break
I always thought that the Tohsaka family Reiju is supposed to represent “harmony”. Or as Rin puts it, elegance.

75. @spweasel
I completely disagree, Rin is ineffectual in the novel because she’s a freaking kid, a kid who should have pretty much no clue what is going on. She may be talented in magecraft but she’s not a super kid or anything and this ain’t a Shonen manga. In fact, at this point her talent in magecraft means almost nothing especially since she had not inherited her family seal yet. Keep in mind that she spent her entire life and fortune preparing for the 5th Holy Grail War.
Nonetheless, this is a nice fanservice for the Rin fanboys I guess.

76. @Marelt
I have no idea how anyone could actually hate Shirou, on any route. Despite his flaws, he’s one hell of a genuinely nice, dependable, hardworking, and trustworthy guy; I would kill to have a friend like him. Rin is lucky to have a guy like him, he’s better than all of us combined. Seriously, I can never understand the hate for a good character and the love for an evil character. I can kinda understand not liking them because you find them boring or whatever but to hate, yeah…
Shiki is more of a dipshit than Shirou (not that he’s a dipshit, just more than Shirou). Regardless, I like Shiki more because he’s just more interesting. Shiki is your normal teenage guy; he don’t have any high sense of righteousness and he puts himself and those close to him first. He even said he would never risk his own neck to find the killer if Arcruied hadn’t forced him to.

77. thinking about how “unlimited blade works” chant is phrased it is quite evident that type moon’s awful german is a stylistic choiche just as much as that. a weird one, that is, but i’m pretty sure they could make the character speak german just fine if only they wanted to.

78. Pete278 on December 6, 2011 at 1:32 am said:

I agree with Aa, Rin being effective in this episode misses the whole point of the scene in the novel and serves only as fan service, really. Though I guess this is a good excuse to fit another Ryuunosuke scene into the anime, which is fine by me, considering they decided to skip the only bit of character development he really got.

79. spweasel on December 6, 2011 at 2:43 am said:

Aa/Pete278:
Here’s the thing – this scene in the novel was already more or less a Rin fanservice scene. Rin is headed towards an extremely unhappy ending; having her trying her hardest to save her friend and failing doesn’t serve any significant purpose other than to set up a meeting between her mother and Kariya. Having her succeed makes the scene more satisfying and could set up an interesting contrast between this scene and her inability to prevent her parents’ deaths.
Also, I think that a scene showing Ryunosuke as an amateur actually helps the story. He’s just some manchild playing with magic items and killing people for fun – running into a “real mage”, even if she’s just a child, is getting in over his head.
And before anyone accuses me of being a Rin fanboy, I should point out that I don’t even like Rin very much – she’s a passable tsundere, but I’ve never felt much character growth from her. Of course, the other choices for Fate heroines are Lawful Stupid Saber and Mary Sue Sakura, so I guess I wouldn’t call myself a fanboy of any of the Fate girls.
80. @Nick J hm i always considered the reiju’s to be mroe servant-relatet rather than family related, so ive always seen the archer seal as “bullseye”… (and since the mainchar in the fan-LN im writing (3rd grail war) gets oda Nobunaga as Archer, ive been having some issues designing his reiju without makign t look TOO much like tohsaka’s… btw if anyone has any ideas on how to effectively use the edelfeit sisters and what kind of twin-saber to give them, please let me know! ive got all the other charas mor eor less set, but those edelfeit sisters (i hate how i HAVE to use them since F/HA specifies them to be in the 3rd war) really really realy dont liek them seriously, just because of that. even decided to kill one of them off in the beginning to at leats give them the twist of havign to support two servants with one persons’s energy. btu i cant thik of any twinned/teamed swordfighters in any legends..)
hm kariya is just a sdistorted but at the same time righteous as his berserker so his reiju could symbolize both.. ilya’s reiju goes obver her entire body so we cant really use that a sreference… as for kiritsugu#s reiju, taht could just as well be a cross (for goodness/self-sacrifice) or a sword whch would ALSO fit both.. shiro’s resembles a sword btu taht desnt help either, his servant is saber, btu also his origin AND “elemental” aaffinity are “sword”.. ugghhhh… kayneth’s reiju is kidna heart-shaped for his unrequited love for his fiancee, but its also reminiscent of the shape of a spear… uhhhm… waver’s reiju is just kinda BIG and detailed, could stand for his huge ambitions, btu iskander’s got huge ambitiosn as well (and huge BROness)… we never realyl properly se how f/SN rider’s reiju looks like… i dotn remember the shape of either caster#s reiju.
@Aa people just get annoyed by how he always brabbles on abotu beeign a hero, but is really just good for cooking in th efate-route, and otherwise in fate and UBW he also always ALWAYS keeps thinking about beeing in the same ROOM with the girls and beeing a “healthy young man” whcih just gets kinda dumb sicne he totally overreacts at everythign slightly sexual. he just gets ANNOYING, so annoying that many people end up hating hiim especialy if they only know fate. but yeah, ive grown to like him, and even in fate, he does have his moments.
@kBnz hm you think so? it kidna doesnt feel liek taht to me, given how much they do would work just as fien or better with proper german.. (the biggest insult beeing iri’s spell in the former episode–sur eits a cool spell, btu IF tehy use german, and pronoucne it german, then at leats go for all german, and dont just put in a n english word into the spell and pronounc eit german! no matter how you look a tit, “shape” is english and pronouncing it german doesnt make it german. the german word for “shape” is “form”.)
@spweasel i agree. also witht he heroines, while they are nice (and all have SOME kind ofcharacter development–saber: accepting her feminine side), rin: opening up to someone, showing a person her true self instead of acting, sakura: livign on depsite beeing rotten to the ccore, accepting to be saved,a nd stuff; but yeah, they SHOUDL NOT HAVE SCRaPPE DMY BELOVED ILYA’S ROUTE! and if they scrapped i for budget reasons, just WHY didnt they finish and include it sometime later, after fate became a cash cow for them?? why? why??? they ought to be aware of the amoutn of ilya fanboys. even tough rin and saber have the most fanboys.

81. Gilgamesh92 on December 6, 2011 at 3:54 am said:

@Break
I feel the exactly the same way. I really wish they didn’t scrap out the Ilya route. BTW the only reason why Rin and Saber have the most fanboys is because there was no Ilya route. If there actually was an Ilya route she would definitely be in the top with them.

82. Leon-Gun on December 6, 2011 at 3:58 am said:

@Aa: The Family Seal is passed on to the sucessor ever since they’re little kids. By this point RIn should have plenty of the Tohsaka Family Seal, especially considering Tokiomi knew his life was on the line (and he knew exactly when the Holy Grail War was gonna take place). As Rin herself explains, the translplant of the Seal is done in very small doses through a long period of time to ensure it isn’t rejected. Besides, the Seal is only like a cheat code that allows them to do magic without going through the process of understanding and acclimating to the spell. Rin has a natural talent in all Five Elements and her potential surpasses her father’s. That has nothing to do with her family seal or anything else.

83. @Break I know! I was so mad when I found at that one point there was going to be an Ilya route! Right now I’m not really sure which route I like best, probably Fate or UBW, but if they had included the Ilya route then there wouldn’t even be a question, she’s just too awesome!

84. @Nate and @Gilgamesh92 exactly, exactly! and even though they pt quite some ilya scenes into Hollow ataraxia (actually i suspect now taht they put the slice-of-life scenes orginally meant for ilya’s route into Hollow ataraxia isnetad), they still didnt inlcude some h-scenes for her, even though RIDER gets one.
well, at least shes got her own spinoff manga. but still, tahts not enough of a consolation… (though if her spinoff-manga were to be animated, the number if ilya fanboys would skyrocket, especialy sicne she kind of personates archer (EMIYA) in some scenes…

85. OK, Rin rules.
Waiting for next episode. This seems to be interesting…

Still, I find it difficult to see how much one can salvage from a guy who thinks that a tomboyish girl should get raped on her way home because it would teach her to be more feminine. And it may just be me, but his self-sacrifice always seemed to be less of a desire to really help people and more of an extreme “women should stay in the kitchen” sentiment. Protectiveness turns from a virtue to a vice when it becomes coupled with extreme amounts of misogyny.
Add to this that he’s about as smart as a pile of moldy bricks and I really don’t see how he would make a good match for the smart and independent minded Rin. Once again, I have not played the other routes, but he would have to fundamentally rebuild his character in order to overcome what I just listed.

87. @Marelt eh whenever did he say that anyoe SHOULD get raped? and isnt he more of a “I wanna stay in the kitchen and women should stay out of the kitchen” person? well his desire to “help” people really isnt anything philanthropic, its simply self-satisfactory by taking on the idelas of kiritsugu because shirou himself is just “empty”. that gets evaluated pretty well in UBW. (and that tahts just fine, too, even though it wotn end well.) well heavens feel he completely discards thoe “borrowed ideals” though, and discards the idea of becomign a hero of justicee, instea docncentrating on becoming an actial person and saving sakura. (ohh the irony eith the true end, as he kind of becomes a proper person personality-wise but loses hs human body..)
well on the contrary, i dotn think a person as smart and witty as rin would make a good match for her; theyd just argue all the time. in taht way, a honest, dimwitted shiro 8who can cook and is good with machines, both things that rin cant) woudl actually be a good match for rin, as they could balance out each others strengths and weaknesses.

88. If Utw drop C3 only Hadena left = we left with nothing. šŸ˜€

@Marelt:Didn’t the “maybe this will make her less tomboyish” kind of line come from UBW route anyway? Be sure to confirm otherwise cause if you just played Fate route you’re spouting crap based only on the anime.
That said his actual comment was a little unnecessary but it really is just like Japan to sneak it in. Basically, Shirou was only told she was attacked, and he just assumed she wasn’t THAT badly messed with and hoped the experience taught her to be a little more wary of her weaknesses. Shirou assumes things a lot at times, which led him to dangerous dilemmas.

Yeah, based on what you said, I don’t think we disagree. They really do discard a lot of those elements in the later routes; his ridiculous attempts to stop Saber, along with most of the general misogyny, are dropped almost immediately in UBW, if I recall correctly; the game tends to throw most of the elements the previous route focused on into easily-resolved or ignored background to avoid repetitiveness. Can’t do much about his intelligence, unfortunately, but he does get somewhat better at least. (Although it’s been a while since I finished the game, I think he gets a bit worse again in HF, but HF is intentionally terribly creepy and depressing overall, so it’s hard to say.)

92. I loved this episode. Rin showed all the traits that she would have in the 5th war; she just doesn’t vehemently deny that she’s like that the way she would later.
I really appreciated the somewhat subtle reminder that she has the potential to recreate at least two of Zelretch’s artifacts later in life. She, as an extremely young human magus managed to destroy an item crafted by a Caster class Servant with sheer raw power. That’s no small feat.
And let’s face it, she was incredibly cute!

Okay, that’s good to know, actually. Maybe I should go back and play UBW and HF if they did scale down the more offensive elements (I don’t mind depressing stories with horrid characters. Just don’t expect me to sympathize with them). It really was the overt misogyny (and the nagging feeling that the authors wanted me to agree with it, although that may just be me) that made me dislike Shirou and the whole Fate route in the first place.
And yes, in all my previous claims, I was referring to the Fate route of the visual novel. I don’t seriously consider the anime for anything I say.

94. Somehow, I managed to download this and missed downloading episode 9…. :S On the 3rd of December… Which confuses me due to “Published on 2011/12/04 by Raze.” Just a minute while I take some headache meds.

95. Shirou is actually a fairly interesting character, if you combine all three routes.
I’ll try not to spoil too much, but I think that you’re not supposed to sympathize with Shirou, you’re supposed to pity him, cursed with a broken personality that completely discards himself as a person…
