Another decent script this week, though the editing was slightly lacking. Translator-isms like “heart is dancing” really shouldn’t exist in professional subs (not to mention the translation inconsistency of such a key phrase with previous episodes).

27. @James
Yeah, MX’s broadcast was pretty bit-starved this episode, and it actually looked a lot worse than what you see in the video for the release. It’s probably one of the worse TV broadcasts I’ve seen of late, due to the reds/purples/etc they used for this episode, and the fact that blocking stands out like a sore thumb when it appears. I did what I could to clean up and conceal the blocking/artefacts/etc, but there’s only so much you can do with some of those scenes where there are very few good pixels to work with.

30. Reminds me of when television stations in the 1990s would deliberately put up a weather warning on the bottom corner of the screen while they aired a made-for-TV movie, just to screw with the tens of thousands of households which were trying to record the movie to VHS. Our local NBC station was particularly bad about that. (They did it with both The Odyssey and Merlin.) Sure, it could just be a coincidence, but I can’t help but to wryly wonder if this was done deliberately to ensure that people will purchase the BDs. Sure, it may not apply as well today — what’s to keep someone from just downloading BD rips? — but I don’t think it’d stop the companies from trying.
Fantastic episode. Have watched the Rider scenes three or four times at this point. I would have liked it if the Berserker scenes could have been as good as the Rider ones but what can you do? Not everyone can be Rider. Rider for SaiGAR 2012!

31. @James
Heres a few frames from the TV broadcast (transport stream) if you and anybody else are curious. I just picked 3 random fairly bad frames (and there’s at least a good 3-4000 of them out of the whole episode, which i’d say is around ~10% of the episode roughly, and they’re at their worst during the Berserker and Saber fight scene.
Random Terrible Looking Frame 1
Random Terrible Looking Frame 2
Random Terrible Looking Frame 3
Random Terrible Looking Frame 4 – TV Broadcast
Random Terrible Looking Frame 4 – Release Encode
As you can see, there isn’t a great deal that can be done, but it’s possible to conceal some frames so they don’t distract too much from the overall viewing experience.
Frame 4 for example, there isn’t a great deal of the frame that can be recovered, but at the same time it can be possible to conceal and blend in the ugliness, so it’s more watchable overall.

Oh, but I can. I’m being pretty lenient with my nico sub comments and “grading”, because the quality of the nico subs are piss poor by any standard considering the fact that they’re supposed to be professionally translated. And I’m not even nitpicking here; they get stuff completely and objectively wrong, sometimes several times per episode, whether it be line misinterpretations, mistakes resulting from an unfamiliarity with the Nasuverse, or (sadly, this is the most common) simple, shocking technical translation errors that even amateurs wouldn’t make.
If this was some genre other than anime and the professional translator produced work this terrible, he’d be fired on the spot.
I also do plenty of actual editing, thank you. Anyone who has watched both the nico subs and our offering and isn’t a blind hater should be able to tell how different the two versions read and feel on the whole. I take great care to ensure the lines in our subs communicate what they’re supposed to, and I know for a fact that many rewatch our version to clarify what they didn’t get/got confused about when watching the nico stream.

@ J / Nnick
It’s well known that the KGV isn’t without its problems.
I do have the Bible at hand (several versions of them, in fact). It’s just that the one I used wasn’t, surprise surprise, the King James Version.
The KJV was published over 400 years ago. People don’t speak in Old English anymore.
If your point was that I didn’t realize it was Psalm 23, then you underestimate my scrutiny. I knew it was the Psalm from the very first line.

45. Nnick on June 10, 2012 at 11:25 am said:

You can’t deny that the KJV of Psalm 23:5 is iconic, Raze. And hey, you know who sometimes uses archaic phrasing in the recital of ancient texts? Priests.

47. I’m currently having seizures of how awesome this was.
And for those saying how underwhelming it is that Rider never touched Gilgamesh.
Gilgamesh is supposed to be extremely overpowered.
The fact that he had to use everything he has to stop Rider is prove enough how awesome Rider is. If Rider was just a tad faster with or without his horse or still had his chariot, Gilgamesh would have had some serious problems.

if you you want that passage to sound correct it needs to be the king james version, period. it sounds good -because- its in olden english, making it sound more important than it really is. no one quotes bible passages from the new international version. they dont sound good.
on the side note, poor saber. i think she will be crying like a helpless child in next episode without even sure what she should do and ends up dissapear without knowing anything (fate route kinda “saved” her from despair though xD)
57. Vuken on June 10, 2012 at 4:54 pm said:

@Arisano
Yet the way they portrayed Gilga’s Enuma Elish is not necessarily inaccurate – when he used it against Saber in FSN he wasn’t using it seriously, he drew it out purely out of whim. Had he used Enuma Elish’s full potential in FSN, Saber would’ve been obliterated like Iskander’s army.
So, the way it is shown in FSN as a beam similar to Excalibur’s blast can simply be seen as only a fraction of its true power. Gilgamesh’s greatness weakness is his own arrogance, which led to his death in the novel’s three routes because he never once used Ea’s full power due to not finding someone worthy of using it against.
That said, I believe it was quite good of Ufotable to present Enuma Elish the way they did, simply cracking the whole freaking world apart – that in itself is entirely badass.

I watched the thing and the way Gilgamesh calls Waver “kid” irks me. It sounds completely off with the rest of his speech. Too informal. Might be a less correct translation, but something like “boy” would fit with the rest of the sentance I think. Also, for the Blu-Ray, I think using the Light Novel translation as a guide would help. The light novel translation has some really good lines that kind of made me feel disappointed with these subs. Not saying copy them word-for-word, but use it as reference.

newbowman’s got it right, this episode justified Tokiomi’s initial overwhelming arrogance at their certainty of winning the Grail War for simply having summoned Gilgamesh.
Make no mistake, this defined what a curb stomp is to the tee; doesn’t make it any less manlier though. Well played Iskander, at least he chose the flashiest blaze of glory to go out in.

63. Shadowknight on June 10, 2012 at 11:52 pm said:

A manly tear was shed today for the King of Conquerors. And a few tears of sympathy for poor Arturia. She couldn’t bring herself to pass judgement on Lancelot and Guinevere, and it drove her best knight to madness. Still shocked that Gilgamesh let Waver live. He’s cocky and completely full of himself, but I don’t think he’s quite as batshit insane as he is in F/sn.
Strange note though. Supposedly, this season was supposed to be 13 episodes, like the first. That means 3 more episodes. I don’t see how. We’ll be finishing off Lancelot next week, and that just leaves the fight between Kiritsugu and Kirei and Saber and Gilgamesh.

This is vanilla Gilgamesh, the original King of Heroes, different to the Gilgamesh you’re familiar with in F/SN (if you’ve gone through the VN you’d know how and why). Also, I’d imagine at least one of the last episodes will be one of those meta-experiences inside the Grail.

71. Iron Man on June 11, 2012 at 10:30 am said:

I think Archer’s Ea is more accurate in F/Z since Ea is supposed to be a sword that destroys worlds, hence the giant crack in the ground, not some red beam of light.

72. Thanks! 😀

73. overmage on June 11, 2012 at 2:26 pm said:

@Iron Man: It’s not about accuracy. The F/SN Ea is the low-powered version, which summons a column of false-space time generated by wind pressure to pulverize foes. Gilgamesh did not consider anyone to be worthy of it in F/SN, and only in F/Z, against Rider, did he consider someone to be on his level and thus worthy of using the true power.
He also use the true power once more in F/HA but that’s another story. Simply put, the sword has two power settings.

74. Break on June 11, 2012 at 9:30 pm said:

yep, also while gil does say he wasnt affected by the grail’s madness in F/SN, its quite obviosu in every other iteration of him that he was very well affected by it. well it shoudlve been obvious; mad people never actually notice that they are mad. i wasnt sure if he was affected or not in F/SN, and i guess Nasu wasnt sure which route to take for that at that ppoint either, but its prety obvious that it really is likw that, the grail added thta certain bit of jerass evilany to him he ha in F/SN. just wanted to say that… btw on another note, i didnt read the novel yet so, are there maybe any explanatiosn as to how exactly ea’s second/full power setting works? i mean its still.. spinning and stuff.

75. Leon-Gun on June 12, 2012 at 3:11 am said:

@Break: I think he’s more or less restrained through a lot of it but when it comes to Saber his insanity levels spark. But in other parts hes actually still the same old Gil. In UBW he acts like a dick because his opponent is a mere human (but he follows Kirei’s plan out of respect for Kirei so he has some sanity) and in the last arc he follows his kingly duties to the end without any insane shenanigans. SO it’s only the Fate Routes interactions with Saber which turn him into “mad-mode!Gilgamesh”.

76. Break on June 12, 2012 at 2:19 pm said:

@Leon-Gun hm, thats true again. although i think the fact that sirou was a “mere human” was not exactly what pissed him off (he did have respect for waver, and his true friend, enkidu, was also, genetically speaking , a full mere human and he even adventured with him) but rather that soemone who had really nothing interestign about him (in his eyes) opposing him, because shirou is, as stressed many times in UBW, empty and only borrowed his ideals from kerry, withotu actually undertsanding him…
but then again i wodner why its only saber that makes him mad. i know he loves her and is obsessed with her, bt he acted differently in zero (okay idfferent author, btu stil you know.) did the grail turn him into a yandere?!

I mean it’s first (and only other) appearance is far better.
Otherwise Ea no problems IMHO
Last, did they really have to put the Berserker VS Saber in this episode?
Kind of sad they could not separate it(I would have preferred like 2 episodes)
No matter

78. Leon-Gun on June 13, 2012 at 5:18 am said:

@Break: Yeah, I’d think so. He became obsessed with the idea that he had found a way of making Saber not just his posession but human. She could now be truly his possession for all his existence. I also get the idea that Gilgamesh just ran out of patience at seeing the once proud King of Knights forever stumbling forward to her soulcrushing ideal starting to succumb to the caring of another person, and not just that, he must have known she was almost killed by Rider and Berserker, so he lost his patience and decided he had to act before losing his chance (Kirei basically admits it was more or less he that actually managed to keep Gilgamesh more or less calm until his appearance during the Caster encounter). So yeah, GIlgamesh just lost his cool and wasn’t willing to let a weakened Saber slip through his hands again.
In UBW you can notice Saber is in prime form and as such he instead focuses on the “Faker” in front of him that dares challenge him with fake ideals (he loves people who hold pure soulcrushing ideals, but Shirou doesn’t truly believe his ideal…until the end at least) since Saber had battled proudly. At the very least that’s what you can gather. After all, GIl does acknowledges Saber several times in UBW, but in a very more calm manner, almost quite like in Fate/Zero..

79. Judgement is misspelled at 5:13, fyi. Great ep, great release. Thanks so much 😀

Since I don’t know where else to ask this question, here it is: Does UTW plan on releasing the dual audio version of Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works? Arigatou!!!!

@furykury uhm why would they? they never did anythign like this and there really isnt a reason to do so either, plus its not really justifiable.
@Leon-Gun oh, youre right. i guess in UBW i was too distracted by his sweet jacket to think about taht xD although Gil is aweosme and one of my favourtie characters, its still very VERY hard for me to forgive him ripping ilya’s heart out. ilyaaaaaaa……. its equally hard to forgive nasu for not making the ilya route.. i know they had budget problems back then, but with all the moeny they get now i dont see a reason why they coldnt have written and added it in later, as an add-on maybe or something.

@Break: Hmmm addon route? You mean like the alluded-to Sacchin route in the alluded-to/teased Tsukihime remake?
Ha ha ha.

Hey, we got a whole series of sequels to Sacchin’s route (Melty Blood). Ilya got nothing.

@Shoujo Q well they are actually always sayign theyre workign on the tsukihime remake.. the thing we never heard anythign of again is Girl’s work.
@Leon-Gun yep! exactly this cruelty is what sets me off! ilya literally got nothing, not even a decent figure (except that one with her swimsuit, but thats kinda meh so im not counting it) or whatever!
….well she does have her own spinoff manga and it is pretty good with the comedy, fanservice and action and parody, btu still its kidna in parallel universe and doesnt include any hints whatsoever as to what woudlve happened in her route…. i mean she already has a predestined and soon runnign otu lifespan in fate, this is exactly the kind of thing nasu always sets up for someone to break the rule epically, and we never get to see or read it…. plus since he cant be from any of the three routes we saw, and it was hitned at somewhat throughotu, i think archer is the shirou from ilya’s route timeline, so we also never get to see whats up with that in case im right… and ilya is just awesome, she deservves her own route and the right to live more than just 20 or so years a smuch as any other heroine.

Rider & Waver are the best pair, at least for me. It’s quite sad to see Rider disappear. But beside that, does anyone notice that the next episode has 4 animation director? I’m assuming next will be two times long than the usual episodes.
