See you next week!

Nice bluff, Raze. The “flu” is a good excuse to have a hanky nearby, isn’t it? I also knew the story, and this was the 4th (and best) translation I’ve watched today…but still…there’s something in my eye, I swear….
Seriously, thanks a million to the groups and take care of yourself!

18. @Solaristics
That’s what it called an “Engrish”. I really don’t like when the Japanese pronounce / write the english word using katakana words. It will cause ambiguous meaning or mistranslation.
A holographic monitor did appear once he started typing. We already know that he was a big fan of Kayaba before entering the game, and was a game beta-tester. You could probably deduce some likely career aspirations for him IRL, maybe something he’s real good at. Maybe even something that could be more fully explained in the future. ‘Nuff said. ๐Ÿ™‚
30. @Shawn263241
The actual servers are probably built on standard linux or unix software, and would be easy enough for a skilled enough user to figure out how to pull up a terminal program.
That being said, converting a program into an in-game item like that? Bit of an ass-pull, I’ll admit.

34. Still with the Nanoha Deja-vu… at least in that show, the magical clone daughter got to live.
By the way, is there actually a plot to this whole thing or is the entire story just “ye random events in ye magical game worlde”?

35. @Marelt The first 7 episodes and the last two episodes have been the side stories from the Novels, that’s why it seems like the anime is just random events etc. Back to the main story next episode.
and then the Aincrad arc should finish around episode 14-16 and the fairy dance arc will start.
All of the main side stories have been animated now, and I doubt they’ll include any more of the material edition side stories so it should be straight main story from now on.

This was in the video and was therefore decided by the studio itself (presumably after getting Kawahara’s (the author) OK. We thought it sounded stupid too, for the record.

38. I thought this episode was pretty meh, but that might be because I already knew what would happen and Iโ€™m probably coming down with the โ€˜flu or something.

Nah, it was meh. Like a lot of the SAO anime you can tell there is some interesting material buried in there, but the pacing of the adaption is frankly just plain pretty mediocre. Feels, not even exactly bad but odd. Like you can see what they were going for and had in mind, but they just didn’t know how to execute it.
Clearly the SAO anime is being made by a newly emerged AI that hasn’t fully grasped human emotions and storytelling yet. She’s doing her best though!
39. @Raze
Dunno why more studios that plan to use a significant amount of English (or another foreign language) don’t swing it by a native speaker. Almost anyone would work and they’d probably have loads of fans online happy to do it for nothing just to have their name in the credits. It’s the age of the Net after all. Once in a while a show gets it right but it’s rare enough that it’s always a pleasant surprise. More typically it ranges from “eh” to wince-inducing.

40. Maybe it’s just me, but either the script for the episode was awful, or the quality of UTW’s translation is deteriorating.

41. You may be with the flu, sir, but Iยดm SICK WITH HAPPINESS with this release! Thanks again, and get better soon!

44. @Kojiro
the problem is that Kirito did all those stuff a bit to fast (+typing like a madman without any interface, like he already knew all the commands in the system)
so, identifying program, converting it, saving its data in his nervgear. To much, to fast and without any help (you don’t type like mad when reading help files for an unknown system)
———
Overall, the episode was good (I didn’t read the LN), didn’t got bored while watching. Though, it had quite a bunch of inconsistencies.

@(anyone whining about inconsistencies) Shut up and enjoy the anime, maybe Kirito is just a major nerd, get over it and stop looking so deeply in to things XD. It’s an anime, not real life, so it does not need to make perfect sense. Even if there are other mess ups, this anime makes far more sense than most other animes out there.

55. Thanks guys! Even if they are compressing the light novels like there is no tomorrow, I still think this is one of the best shows this season by a longshot.

56. Yui, inb4 Shakugan no Shana jokes. Yeah, the anime have lack of luster if you’re already had read the LN. I try to enjoy it by putting away all you had known from the LN. That’s why I like to watch it twice: in perspective of LN-reader and casual anime viewer.
Now, I can’t wait for the next episode preview to come out this Wednesday. I had a feeling that they gonna wrap up the remaining chapters (omitting Chapter 19 & 20) in one go.

60. Thanks! ๏ผˆ๏ผพใ€‚๏ผพ๏ผ‰

61. Frog legs. Lotsa of ’em! Asuna ain’t gonna cook French for Kirito :3

62. The only issue I really had was the Sinker Thinker.

63. About the console thing, I think you’re all approaching it from the wrong angle. A much simpler explanation is (ep 12 spoiler)
that SAO includes built-in console commands, like most PC FPSs and that Kirito, being the hardcore obsessive player that he is, knows most of them by heart; if you’ve ever visited a gaming forum, you’d see that’s hardly unusual. Or perhaps even simpler, SAO has a high-level scripting language built into its engine, like the Civ series does with Lua, which Kirito learned due to being a computer nerd
.
In fact, (vol 4 LN spoiler)
It’s pretty much confirmed in the climax of the 4th volume that Cardinal does, in fact, have built-in console commands in the manner of most FPSs, supporting at least item spawning and attribute modification; basically what Kirito did with Yui in this ep. The downloading command isn’t used in that confrontation, but then it’s a function basic enough you’d expect it to exist regardless
.
karma’s plot hole mentioned above is still valid, however, but small enough I’d forgive it in the name of drama. Oh yeah, and thanks for the subs UTW, much appreciated ๐Ÿ™‚

64. Thanks!

65. @JokerGist even a computer nerd needs an interface if he/she wants to do something. Kirito “hacked” at least half his way without one. I guess that’s plot “armor” version 1.
Plot armor version 2…………waiting to be aired

66. some one on September 23, 2012 at 6:14 pm said:

You guys need to know how a mystery works.
Yeah pretty much obvious what Yui was since she did not have an hp gauge. Still enjoyed it though.

67. Apparently I’m an exception but I’ve read the first four volumes of the light novels and the first 12 episodes of the anime and I find the anime story to be superior.
The first thing I noticed (and the only reason I’m watching the series at all after giving up anime for 4-5 years) is that it addresses my two biggest anime pet peeves: male characters in this series are allowed to display emotional intelligence and female characters keep their outbursts of domestic violence to a minimum.
Volume 1 was pretty good about making it easy to suspend disbelief except with the Kirito-Asuna relationship (and the ending). The anime does a better job of this by having them meet for the first boss fight. Defeating the first boss together, followed by two years of occupational contact, which then leads to a romantic relationship is a more believable explanation than just having the Perfect Girlfriend show up out of nowhere. Small details like the food scene in episode 2 give us a plausible explanation for why Asuna decided to devote time to leveling up her cooking skill. In the novel it’s not explained because the Perfect Girlfriend is always a great cook regardless of whether or not this makes sense in context. On a sliding scale between wish fulfillment fantasy and realism I like the balance of the anime more than the novel.
Volume 1 was originally written as a stand-alone story, so the side stories in volume 2 (and the sequels) suffer from the typical loss of focus inherent in such things, but when the anime puts all the Aincrad stories in chronological order like this it helps make the world more believable.
I’m not a fan of the mystical handwaving at the end of the Aincrad arc (that will presumably also show up in the anime) because it ruins an otherwise perfect hard sci-fi setting but overall this one of the best I’ve seen.

68. JokerGist on September 23, 2012 at 7:18 pm said:

@New *Sigh*, my point is, stop worrying about the specifics (that do not truly hinder the story or plot) and enjoy the anime XD.

69. Somehow I keep expecting this series to live up to .hack//SIGN and keep forgetting that it’s much more action focused. From the spoilers I’ve read and all I’m almost afraid that it will end up disappointing me. I guess as long as it keeps being more about Kirito than Asuna it should be all right.

70. man00ver on September 23, 2012 at 7:57 pm said:

@Justus – Here, here! The sequencing of the anime improves the flow of the story quite a lot. And I hadn’t thought about it before, but the ep2 cream-bun anecdote really DID plant the seeds for Kirito helping Asuna realize that there should be more to game-life than just grinding. The anime also VASTLY improved the Murder SS, which was quite a mess in the LN version, tripping itself up over minutiae related to the anti-criminal code, marriage/storage, and litigating the case against Grimlock. There are holes in that story either way, but it’s still important background, and “less is more” in this case. I’ll join you in hoping for some efficient housecleaning when it comes to wrapping up the arc.
@JokerGist – Amen, brother. Twice!

71. Ryu Infiniti on September 23, 2012 at 8:10 pm said:

People really are over thinking this, so I decided to do the same and reply in general to them. XD
Kirito stated himself he used Yui’s GM account, to back up her data before her account was rejected by the system. Which means the GM tools would be at his disposal so Item creation which is a basic GM tool in any game would be simple enough. Since it was Yui’s account all her data would be right there for the taking. All he did was make an item out of her data, then copied all her data to his nervegear. Nothing overly extravagant.
As for the interface, like everything else in the show. The interface probably was on his HUD which isn’t always shown like the HP bars, scanners, and other stuff. Probably they displayed the last part to symbolize the copying of data only.
Also the true interface that the Players have is attached to their brain, through the nervegear. So who knows how fast things can process.

72. Sadly, the “plot” or “story”, however you want to call it, is made of small details.
The more inconsistencies, the more the story losses its immersion part and consequently, its value. And this show already had a few of them here and there, and its not LN’s fault so far for the issues it has, its the studio’s mistakes so far from what I’ve seen (name issues, etc)
You can still enjoy it (you would enjoy it more without inconsistencies), but what do you expect people to talk about an anime if it has some problems? Ofc they talk about the problems since they want a better performance.

73. @Ryu Infiniti
interface linked only with player HUD would work if they showed no interface. Or show the interface from Kirito’s or Asuna’s PoV. But they didn’t do that. They showed the interface as a just popped stuff, half way in.
I’ll just call it plot armor, unless they fix it for bluerays

74. It is the same every single week, everyone rage about SAO. I am not sure if this is the first LN that many people read, but it is expected that the anime will not be the same !! First of all, they only have 20 minutes or so every week. If they do it snail pace, then the anime will take forever to finish. Also, there are many written details that cannot be made into anime.
I have read the LN and I also think that there are parts that doesn’t add up, but it’s fine, its an anime after all, just enjoy it as if it is any other anime out there.
Just think about it as if you have never read the LN !!

75. .hack was gloomy you guys. I’m guessing this is suppose to be a more livelier version of DOThack.
And someone here named Vic mentioned how everyone rages about SAO every week. The fact that they rage about it EVERY WEEK means they’re actually following it. You know, you guys can stop at any point should you fine this anime not worth watching.
Anyways, thats an awful amount of compressing storylines huh? Meeting people every episode and dying on the next. I heard its gonna be 26 episodes of SAO and its already 2 years of gameplay in 13 episodes.

76. @Ian I’m happy for time compression in a story about an MMORPG. We get to see the interesting highlights instead of the 99.9% of the boring level grinding but they leave enough details in that it feels like it’s actually happening in a real MMO. I don’t recall the details of the characters operating the game’s interface (pinch zooming, etc.) being as believable in .hack//SIGN. My initial impression is this series is what .hack should have been.

77. Ludovico on September 24, 2012 at 3:24 am said:

Not downgrading the show or anything, since I like it a-loh but aren’t real world people supposed to take care of the gamer’s bodies? Unless the creator is using some sort of brain burst prototype, making real world playing time much, much shorter… that’d be awesome. Disregarding this though, there’s a lot of human waste to be cleaned, food being spooned and all the domiciliary nurses suddenly started taking care of not that elderly people.

78. @Ludovico You obviously haven’t read the end of Volume 1. Once Kirito returns to the real world, the mechanism taking care of them is explained. (And the “burst” idea is actually present in the author’s other work Accel World and is introduced into the SAO series in volume 9.) http://www.baka-tsuki.org/project/index.php?title=Sword_Art_Online

79. Ryu Infiniti on September 24, 2012 at 4:00 am said:

Not necessarily, It would be probably similar to a coma like state. So the body would get nutients from an IV of sorts and what ever else they have in the future to take care of bodies.

80. Ludovico on September 24, 2012 at 4:14 am said:

Yeah, coma like state would decrease the input a lot. They’d still shit their pants tho. @Sakura, why u no spoiler alert?? I obviously haven’t read any volumes… Anyway, I guess it’s obvious Kirito comes back in the end.. and the burst idea clearly comes from the fact that I watch the other anime. I wouldn’t just say burst out of the blue. thanks anyway ^^

81. I didn’t think it rated a spoiler tag since all I was doing was telling the location of the information you were asking about rather than the information itself. (As you said yourself, it’s obvious that he comes back in the end or else there’d be no more volumes! lol) And that’s also where the “shit their pants”, um, clean up is explained as well. lol XD
I would suggest reading the volumes since the anime is leaving out a lot. If you don’t want to read spoilers, wait till this arc is over (probably no more than 2 eps from now) and read volume 1, 2 and 8. Actually, you could go ahead and read volumes 2 and 8 since both of those have been animated already. It’s only the end of volume 1 that hasn’t been aired yet.
Accel world is technically in SAO’s future so the speak timeline wise so it’s good you’ve at least watched that anime cause it would give you some background/basis for all the info in SAO. ๐Ÿ™‚ (Btw, on that site I linked, there’s an Accel World/SAO crossover story – “Versus”. You should read it once this current arc is over! ๐Ÿ™‚ The story contains no spoilers for the next arc, I promise.)

82. Around 10:45, an ad in japanese comes out and says something about an AW x SAO with a date of 2013/2/17. Anyone know what this is about?

83. Ludovico on September 24, 2012 at 6:41 am said:

Don’t fuss over it Sakura, I realized it wasn’t something huge so it’s ok ๐Ÿ™‚ Yes, I’ve skipped that site precisely to avoid those kind of things but if it’s like you say then I’ll read it afterwards. I…. kind of want to wait for the anime to end before I read the volumes. It’s always the same, when the books are read the screen adaptation always loses some points (thinking of ASoIaF right now). Maybe I’ll read them when SAO goes for the second season to pass the time.

84. Yes, I understand. The books/original material are always better. For me, however, I couldn’t stop thinking about what might happen in the story so I only lasted through 2 eps of SAO before I broke down and read the light novels. lol Right now I’m checking the site daily to read the new parts translated from volume 11. Tis quite exciting. ๐Ÿ™‚
I would recommend reading them all once season 1 is finished. 1) who know whether there will be a season 2 and 2) if there is a continuation, there’s going to be some funky adaptations going on since the next 2 LN arcs only take up 3 volumes while the current one will be 3 at least. So if they opt to do all 3 arcs…I and other are going to be griping about how much they’re leaving out. So, better to read up on what might be left out.

85. Thank you =w=

@needhelp – probably the first thing to check would be your security software, such as Norton or McAfee. Look in the Programs section of the Firewall settings to see how your Bittorrent client is configured, and possibly open it up a bit.
Another possibility might be your Bittorrent encryption settings; if it’s not set to permit fallback to unencrypted connections, certain torrents may not have enough encryption-enabled seeds to perform well.
Lastly, if you’re using a proxy, you might try disabling it if possible.

@ AMg So they are wasting an episode on that side plot XD

100. I expect the 75th floor boss to be at the end of the episode, probably with the revelation at the end as a cliffhanger. Even with the character development, I can’t see the fishing side section taking more than half an episode. Plus, the title of the next episode…

101. @Ludovico You get my drift then. Even though SAO is amazing it’s not guaranteed past 1 season…yet. *crosses fingers*
@AMg I refuse to believe that the side story will encompass the whole episode. Otherwise the episode title wouldn’t match. I think it’ll go at least partially into the next story. The end of the side story ties in too well to the next arc to stop there. (Even though I wish they would stop there and then take two more eps to finish the next part. *sighs* They are really rushing it.)

102. @Cyou: My thoughts exactly. The end of the ep should be at one of the two reveals.

103. @Sakura
Side story you say? That fishing arc ain’t side story. It’s in the original Volume One aka it’s canon. Chapter 18 & 19. Don’t believe, go and read it. :3 Most probably Episode 13 will end at
Chapter 21, doing the gig as in Episode 9; revealing The Skullreaper.
:3

104. Apparently they will end the ep at the end of chapter 19…if u guy actually read the synopsis on the site…..

105. How many episodes is the serie suppose to be? Just wondering ๐Ÿ˜‰

Should be 25 episode.

107. I don’t know where else to ask this. Have you guys changed something about the site (I know the layout is slightly different), because I can’t access it on my home computer. Whenever I tried, it would immediately say “problem loading page” and my anti-virus would act. Malwarebytes PRO would IP block would pop-up saying it blocked a outgoing connection to a potentially unwanted site, under the process of avastsvc.exe. I use AVast too. It’s the same IP address every time too (213.186.33.17). I scanned my computer and everything seems okay so I was wondering what was going on?

108. @AMg I know it’s part of the main story. But 1) it is a slight detour aka sub plot and 2) I didn’t feel like using a spoiler tag so I was trying to be cryptic. I, unlike some on here, *have* read all the LNs and related stories. Please refrain from chewing me out over my choice of terminology.

109. @Sakura
What? You don’t like them to enjoy their well-deserve getaway from the front lines? :3
Beside that “side story” you called will explain why Asuna fall in love with Kirito in the first place aka Justifying the reason why they included the Murder Inside the Area SS. It’s sort of strengthening the relationship between them.
