Sorry for the slight delay this week; the encoder took some time to deal with the shitty video source.
The episode felt a little slow coming off of last week’s epic infodump, but it’s all for good buildup.

4. @Blue
Believe me- you wouldn’t have wanted the original uneditied source.

5. Anyway, thanks for the release! Thanks for putting in the extra time _ar 😀

7. yeah there’s a slight changes in the animation, i felt that too.

9. Thanks for the releaaaase! O:

10. Lol I’m not complaining or anything I understand these things take time and sometimes more time than others but saying it’s a “slight” delay is a bit of a stretch xD

11. This episode just felt..short.

12. Why are the end credits for this episode taken from episode 4? Muxing error?

This seems to be the “quality down” episode… Judging from the preview, the animation quality should return to usual next episode?

15. Whilst I appreciate the subs, I sincerely hope you release a v2 (or fix it up in the batch) with a proper video source – the colours are completely screwed up in this episode, especially compared to Aidoru’s release. It would make this episode much less jarring as the animation quality hasn’t really decreased that much.

16. @dazfer
Not sure if I’m mixing up companies but I think these guys are doing like 3 or 4 shows. Not sure how it works but they might be having trouble keeping up.

18. Thanks, great episode! After watching last 2 episodes I really want to read novel…. not gona happen any time soon, unfortunately =\

19. aidoru are translating the first two chapters (Only these two chapters) Other than them, I don’t know of any other translators :/ If the Anime is popular enough an Official translation of the novels may come out, but that’s a huge stretch. All we can hope is that the anime will increase interest in the Novels and cause them to be picked up by fan translators. Similar to how the pace of translations for the SAO LNs picked up as soon as the anime was announced.

23. How did I rewrite current Episode 4 file with Episode 5? I’d wonder how…
Yeah. The episode feels kinda… short. Too much going on in this episode and the visual is kinda weird on my end.
And you thought Shun was one smooth motherfast. Satoru did take one notch up in this one and she’d replied his advance! Oh, boy…
Quite interesting. The Bonobo reaction was surprising: if you’ve been raised to think that killing is horrible (especially if you’ve got extra anti-killing wiring) then it makes sense that you’d be horrified to learn that your predecessors all but wiped out the population previous civilisation, but if you’ve been raised to think that sexual activity is normal or reasonable, then it seems counterintuitive that you would learn that a previous civilisation didn’t think that way and jump to the conclusion that its people were right and yours were wrong.

(Projection of the self upon the subject? Brought to mind how people wrote about non-human aliens kidnapping human women, because that’s what they thought they’d do if they were non-human aliens (which fails to account for that, if they were non-human aliens, they would find non-human aliens beautiful and humans not).)
Also curious that a member of the nearby(?) temple either hunted them down or happened to stumble across them when the few of them were listening to a single library within a matter of hours within their arrival within that territory, yet nothing of the sort seems to have happened with the hundreds of thousands of militaristic invaders (who are nonetheless no match for these monks).
Now then, what is that white substance and why is it arranged in that pattern rather than in a web or a biofilm..? Hmmm.
The story is looking steadily weaker as time passes, but the premise remains significantly interesting. Notable curiosity about where this is all heading.
As always, thank you very much for your time and diligence!

25. wtf 20minutes passed like 5
and why is the quality so much different than before ?
anyway thx for the release

What a low quality episode regarding animation, I’m astonished! I hope they remake it with the BD release.

28. :/ the narrative went down very bad in this episode, and so did the visual quality in general.
What took the hardest blow was pacing, I think. They jumped from one event to another very suddenly, and the episode felt like a bunch of scenes clumsily glued together rather than a clean composition.
I still love the series, but episode 5 was a letdown 🙁

Thanks for subs n stuff :3

32. @Guest
The credits for cast and stuff are from ep4 because the ep5 ed was shit terrible and unfixable for the most part. The ED has been put together from ep2-4. I’ll be splicing this fixed ed into the rest of the episodes until either the ED changes or there is an actual change besides credits in the ED. Sure it’s nice to have correct Cast, etc but it saves me wasting 30mins a week or more fixing shit so that obviously outweighs the negatives of wrong credits.

Thanks for the efforts! Though I’ll join the most of us in proclaiming this episode rather confusing (and lamenting the lower-quality artwork). Looks like we’ll get better fare next week, though.
Satoru ain’t so smooth, really. Wrong time and place for the “monkey business.”
35. /sigh another 7 days of waiting
For those complaining about animation quality. It happens. I believe either they run into trouble during production or they are spending time on more labour intensive future episodes.
It will probably get fixed up in the BDs.

36. I liked this. I don’t think the quality of the animation dropped, rather the style was altered. It looked simpler, more organic, and slightly retro.

37. Pacing and animation is really weird this ep. Also, dat oppai…do not want D: gotta look at some Hellabunna or Black Dog now…

38. @man00ver
Still, he’s taking advantage over the situation; whether he fully understand what he’d learn from the false minoshiro or unconsciously venting his pent up sexual tension between him and Saki. Saki, on the other hand understand the whole “monkey business” thing and gave in.
39. What a strange episode.

Then, “Oh Satoru, look over there, the mutant guard is peeping!” Nice dodge, Saki. Bonobo game over!
@Alex
Just felt compelled to say that the SAO LN’s were pretty much going at a blistering pace once they started translating, which if I remember correctly was long before the anime was announced. Don’t know why I felt compelled to respond just to say that, but yeah…

Yeah. If you put it that way. They still digesting the dark history of the PK and truth of how their society exist today. Confusion between what is norm and the dark truth is bound to happen after the PK History 101: Uncut & Unrated session.

🙂
This appears to be a biblical “Garden of Eden” reference to me. “Eve” has consumed the fruit of the “tree of knowledge,” and is now ashamed of what used to seem perfectly natural. Since their powers are sealed, whatever justification there was for their bonobo behavior is now missing also. “Paradise” may never be the same again.

@man00ver Its possible that upon understanding that our customs are not eternal and that they were manufactured artificially, we might question the validity of our culture, however, more commonly, people prefer to think that, if their culture is a new development then it is a necessary improvement upon past cultures. Unless the individual has personal problems accepting their culture, they will not be quick to abandon it no matter what new information is revealed.
I*n this episode, however, I don’t think we saw Saki rejecting the “Bonobo behavior”. It seemed to me she was simply having doubts but dispelled them by thinking “People aren’t monkeys.” After all, she didn’t say she wanted to stop as she should have if she had come to a conclusion that what she was doing was wrong. Instead, she said it was nothing as if she had dispelled doubt and intended to continue with what she was doing.
Also, so far as I can tell from the scripture, Adam and Eve received no knowledge from eating the fruit. They merely became convinced of ideas which had no validity i.e. that nakedness was something to be ashamed of. This is due to the influence of sin which clouds the judgment, not new knowledge which clarifies perception.

47. man00ver on October 30, 2012 at 11:04 pm said:

I dunno, Muian124. Saki didn’t appear to be perfectly comfortable when Satoru started his advance (contrast this with her reaction when Shun touched her hand in the boat), but made herself more comfortable with it by taking control of the situation. But then, remembering the library lesson about the reason behind the “cultural norm,” she mentally rejected it, stopped, and sat up. When Satoru expressed his confusion, she quickly looked around and found an excuse to end it.
She has already exhibited significant discomfort with the societal norms, even before the encounter with the false minoshiro.
Without getting too far into biblical interpretation, the Judeo-Christian tradition is that Eve ate fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and shared it with Adam, whereupon they became aware of their nakedness (or perhaps their sexuality) and covered themselves, causing God to inquire, “who told you that you were naked?” on his next visit. The disobedience (rather than the new knowledge) was the Original Sin, and the preview clip at the end of the episode indicates Saki’s society will regard it as her primary crime.
I have no advance knowledge of the forthcoming story, but if the parallels hold, she’ll be exiled (together with at least one male). Given the prohibition against violence, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a “Cain and Abel” analog (jealousy killing) showing up soon.
