Ok so this volume only contained the first episode, the following 8 volumes will have 3 episodes each. Also we are doing BDs for this show because we actually like it and don’t mind working on it again unlike most shows.
First thing’s first though, to answer a few questions.
Q: WHY ARE YOUR BD ENCODES SO BIG WHEN THE HDTV ONES WERE LIKE HALF THE SIZE OF THE 720p and 1/8TH THE SIZE OF THE 1080p? PLZLEARNTOENCODE YOU FAGGOTS.
A: Simple answer really, Blu-rays recommended bitrate for video (around 40-42mbps) allows for quite decent encoding quality and also gives the authorer some overhead to play with to produce a nicer quality home video release. This means that things like banding, blocking, etc can be managed much better than in the DVD days. With the advent of like 4 times the bitrate of DVD video and a much more efficent codec (H.264 vs MPEG2 in all its badness), we are seeing a lot more being done to produce nicer looking retail releases. Basically for Anime this typically means the use of Digital Grain in various forms, along with fancy dithering algorithms, etc. A lot of the time, a more static approach to grain is taken which compresses a lot better, and some times looks better without it there anyway. What has been be done for this series was a more similar approach that’s done for live action films and media, basically really soft non-obtrusive highly dynamic Digital Grain. Being so dynamic and unpredictable it requires heavy bitrate overhead because it can’t be referenced a lot of the time and requires coding of many more blocks than otherwise would be used. Now you could remove it, but removing it looks even worse because then there is lolbanding and the backgrounds don’t take well to much debanding, and you basically get the TV broadcasts that have so much background detail missing or wiped out.
Q: WHY IS THERE ONLY ONE EPISODE RELEASED, REST WHERE?
A: This volume only has 1 episode, and the next one till the end will have 3 each.
If you don’t care about grain or background details, please just keep your tv encodes and don’t complain about the size. If 1080p is a little too big, get the 720p version, for which just the processing of resizing has naturally removed grain that was no longer needed at that reduction of pixels.
If you want to complain about size just because you are a faggot and think you can change the world with your naivety please do it elsewhere, lest we tell you how stupid you sound doing so.
The tl;dr is I tried taking a few different approaches and the one where keeping the more useful areas of the dynamic grain pretty close as I could turned out the nicest looking results. Static grain just made everything look cloudy, and debanding/removing the grain just made stuff look much closer to the TV broadcasts. Just remember that nobody is holding a gun to your head telling you to download something. Download it if it meets your needs otherwise just don’t.
I won’t keep filling this post up, but let me just say that other than some bit starvation related blocking that is a result of the dynamic grain effect that chewed up more bitrate at times than they could sustain even with 40mbps, these blu-rays seem to be a quite nice example of how HD content should be handled. They aren’t perfect, but overall this episode was fairly consistent and they handled most things pretty well.
Enjoy~

I did not know you guys had picked up the BD’s! Cannot begin to explain how pleased I am to DL this, as UTW’s version is the only archival-quality fansub being made for Shinsekai Yori.

  11. Will you make a separate encode for the OP and ED of this show? I like to archive those rather than keep full series. If not I’ll just grab the Zero-Raws one, or whichever, but you have superior encodes.

Nice! It’s great to see you guys releasing the BDs for this series, even though you’ll eventually drop it and leave it incomplete with your current track record.
    …Oh, did I say that?
Also, you really need to work on your encoding, and I’m not complaining about the file size. This release reeks of a lack professionalism backed by elitism. Get a grip.

  16. so whats new in the bds? gore/uncensorship perhaps?

  17. @HahaOhWow
Yeah cause Fagsubbers aren’t human and we are all robots thus, we must behave a certain way else we might possibly offend someone. None of the projects I work on have ever been dropped and I always finish everything I start, because that is important for everything in life, fagsubbing included.
But you’re right there is a lack of professionalism because we do this stuff because we enjoy it, and yeah we’re just normal people, with normal attitudes, and yeah sometimes we can act stupid or elitist or whatever. Anybody who has been outside into the real world knows that this is what life is like, and you just treat it like everything else, you deal with it. I don’t know what this professionalism is that speak of though, being professional doesn’t mean you have to fake niceties, it just means handling certain scenarios in certain way if necessary.

  19. Awesome ! Thanks 🙂

  20. In this day and age of high speed internet and mass storage media, who really cares about file size? I’ve not actually seen it yet, waiting for my kids to go to bed so I can enjoy it properly, but I dare say the quality speaks for itself.

  21. Sorry fags. Get a better ISP, otherwise forget about downloading your favourite animu from the net. Internet is ridicolously cheap. I don’t want to point this out, but some people in Africa have a lot better connection that you do.
Also, who cares about 4c and what the fags on /a/ say? If they can make it better, then – by all means – they should do it. No one forces them to download these releases. Learn to respect that someone’s actuallly willing to sacrifice their time and share something with you all, free of charge… or perhaps you’re taking it for granted?
Thanks for the release, guys. You deserve it.

The main complaint is not the file size itself but the unreasonable encoding choices that lead to it.

iced: “who care”, you say? You seem to care quite a bit.

  24. I agree with Newts – wtf cares about file sizes these days. Delete some pr0n or buy a new hdd. Thanks UTW!

Please elaborate why you think the “encoding choices” are unreasonable.

  26. hi guys

  27. Look out guys! Blank BD-R media is SO EXPENSIVE these days, I mean, it’s not like I can fit this whole series with the 1080p encode onto 2-3 discs. Alternatively, my 3TB HDD might get full from this.
On a more serious note, thank you for not only releasing this, but taking the time to explain your decisions regarding the encode (though I would’ve downloaded it regardless).

  36. @wat
    There’s that too.
If people are seriously expecting there to be that much of a difference between 720p and 1080p other than grain/noise and the 1080p looking slightly cleaner cause of this, then that’s kinda nuts. Personally I watch stuff full screen at 2560×1600 so I find 1080p usually looks nicer for me when resized further if there’s grain and such present, that alone is a good enough reason for me to keep a 1080p instead of a 720p.
    Edit:
Also if the grain is added at 1080p, then I see no reason not to do a 1080p too. It’s very rare for anime to ever look much different at all between 720p and 1080p just because most of it is hand drawn. But grain for example, just doesn’t handle resizing well because its usually so fine, so it looks nicer always at 1080p if it’s done right.

  37. madninja on December 7, 2012 at 5:26 pm said:

Well I for one don’t care about file size. My problem is which one to download XD To be quite honest, I don’t see much of a difference between the two. Not saying there isn’t a difference, it’s just that it isn’t big enough that I can tell. Anyways, thanks a lot for your hard work!!

  38. Really nice, thx a lot

  39. @madninja
The difference is more so in the grain and how it looks on the 720p vs the 1080p, theres other minor things like gradients and stuff looking a bit better at 1080p. If you don’t mind the bit of extra space the 1080p releases take up then just grab those. I always tell people to go with what is best for their viewing purposes, etc. But look you can’t really go wrong grabbing the 720p either, I did what I could to keep it as close transparency wise as I could to the 1080p.

  40. People bitch about encoding quality when they can’t release their own version of the vid srsly go die in a gutter somewhere.

  41. Also, thanks for the release. Remember they’re subbing animes for free so they’re free to drop whatever project they’re working on if it gets in their way.

ar I have nothing against big encodes and I haven’t downloaded this one yet but if you’re still using level 4.1 for your encodes it’s normal you get huge filesizes (but it’s true for TV as well). Encodes should always be done at least on the veryslow preset with unrestricted level and profile (which isn’t the case for all the encodes from UTW I got). On some shows you can save 30% filesize between level 4.1 and unrestricted. I think you know about filtering so you’re not stupid enough to encode unfiltered BDs (like CGi) so the only thing that should make a filesize that huge would be the restricted level.
And by the way, comparing with BDs is stupid because BDs use so much limited encoding profiles you need almost thrice as much bitrate as a good encode (in Hi10P and even more compared to Hi444P)

As a side note, I wonder why the companies choose to release 1 episode on the disk. It certainly doesn’t encourage people to buy it… Then again, after hearing what ar had to say, maybe the filesize for this episode was so large that they had to use a whole BD for it, lol.

  57. Juliet Charlie Delta on December 8, 2012 at 9:39 am said:

    @Frediloc
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

  58. If I remember correctly, _ar said the BD episode was around 6.2GB. The first volume had just the first episode on it, and then the next volumes will have 3.

The files disappeared. Did someone cry copyright?

  60. I don’t have the raw to compare against, but the quality does seem quite satisfying. However I’m honestly doubtful if the source justifies that file size. But I would be surprised if there will not be someone else which also tries releasing this, so judgment will have to wait until that happens.

  61. @Spiller
What I guess you seem to misunderstand is, it’s not whether the source justifies that file size, it’s the filesize that is required to be fairly transparent to the source. Maybe not all encoders bother actually checking this kinda stuff, but I spent quite a bit of time going over the results and tweaking stuff till I was happy with how it came out. I rarely ever give stuff too much excess bitrate unless its really required. And in this kind of scenario, the animation itself doesn’t require that much no, but the grain effect added on top really does. You can bet your ass that over 50% of the bitrate is just for the grain, because thats what it takes to code it. Video compression is only as efficient as a videos staticness and similarities, the more dynamic and dissimilar your content is, the more bits you’ll require to compress it while still being fairly representative of the sources frequencies and stuff.

  62. Insaf2 la. taw la suka beso, jgn la mlampau sgt
Either way, nice release as always. keep it up

  63. @ar,
No, that is exactly what I meant. But upon closer inspection I notice what you meant by “soft non-obtrusive highly dynamic Digital grain”, it was so subtle that I didn’t notice it when I watched the episode (which I guess was the point). Indeed, that explains the file size, so I will take that back.
(Also started to notice some color banding, mostly in the prologue in the reddish transitions, but that might just be VLC and 10-bit contents, I don’t have MPC on this computer to cross-check.)
Anyway, nice to see the BD out so fast, I was considering re-watching it to get a better understanding of the story so far.

  64. Yeah there’s a little bit of banding here and there, but nothing really noticeable and mostly only on extreme fast moving gradients like fire burning and stuff, which aren’t all that easy to fix, and to do requires heavy debanding which is counterproductive where you have a lot of soft background details that don’t take too well to edgemasking. I did deband it somewhat, and then just matched the grain for these areas best I could or used static grain on brighter areas to try and save a little bit of bitrate where it’s not really noticeable.
The studio preserved the video pretty well, so it’s kinda nice not having to smooth it to oblivion (especially when it doesn’t take kindly to doing so), just to make it look more acceptable. I’d rather they spam fine grain that’s much easier on the eyes and does a better job at gradient preservation when it matters, as you are watching the video.
All in all some banding is kinda normal, as long as its under control and kept to a minimum, unlike all SHAFT stuff, which is a fucking nightmare to fix, and even then it can’t really be fixed cause they’ve managed to completely jack up the gradients through resizing and shit.
I’m just glad the days of DVD grain are over, where everything looked like it was covered in blotches of dirt. HD grain when done well, looks really nice and other than requiring 90001kbps to encode, isn’t really distracting and is quite welcome imho.

When are you going to release Anohana, Amagami SS+’s and Idolmaster BDs?!

  66. Right after Nisemonogatari and Madoka BDs, I hope.

  67. Anohana > I’m not too sure where Adenozin is upto with that, but I believe it’s at having some ts changes and stuff made to work with 1920×1080 since I don’t really have the time at the moment to be fixing it myself. When he’s all good and ready, and we’ve QC’d it it’ll get released.
Amagami SS+ > Nope, nope nope. Series was pretty shit and none of us are interested in further ruining the memories of the first series, and the specials were pretty bad too, so basically it is never going to happen regardless of whether we did the first series or not.
Idolmaster > Yeah no. TL doesnt care about working on it any further, and Kusion has other projects he needs finished. Daiz has javascript and pretty sure he wouldn’t want to encode 26 eps, fix up typesetting, and so on. He has enough on his plate with his own projects at the moment. Download FFFpeeps version.
tl;dr BD projects are time consuming and if none of us really want to work on a show twice, they aren’t going to ever happen, and sadly that’s just the way the world turns. Time != Infinite.
Nise is being worked on by me when I have some spare time here and there, and the same goes for 8thSin as well. We both have fulltime jobs, so we don’t get to spend all that much time working on it, but it’s making slow but steady progress.
Madoka is actually 50% edited now, but whether we finish it before new year or not depends on how busy we all are with Christmas, Family, Friends and stuff.

  68. Thanks for the comprehensive status update!

  70. @aokimasaru
No. Basically only the shows we want to work on again will get done, and it won’t even be many of those because we all lack the free time to do them. Most shows aren’t worth watching twice, let alone working on twice. So as you can imagine we have to choose stuff we actually don’t hate working on, otherwise we’d end up dropping it or never finishing it.

    first: thanks for this one.
second: this encode is hardcore, VLC drops frames around 0:50 (i dont know why, mabe cause bitrate is too high?) resulting in choppy video, ffplay does well when playing that part (only it doesnt do subs, else i would use it instead of VLC)

  72. Any chance you guys will pick the rest of the BD releases back up or are you waiting for the whole series to be released on BD? I think it’s up to volume 6 now and from what I’ve seen of screenshot comparisons, they fixed a whole lot of derp-faces and design flaws 🙂 Quite excited for a fixed version of the infamous derp!face episode…
