I don’t get GG. How low can you fall, as to translate a show, ONLY to piss off the possible fanbase? That’s beyond childish, it’s plainly stupid. Specially since Aria is not even close to be as generic as people make it to be.

It’s exactly the voices of great discontent and rage that drive gg to continue doing what they do. In Hidan, for example, they began by emulating (and upping the ante considerably) the style of a particular translator who is/was in two of the most respected groups in fansub history (which gg refers to as “high-quality groups” and I will not name). They overuse TL notes and leave untranslated terms in because leechers have traditionally loved these “little snippets to Japanese culture/language” in their fansub releases when they really aren’t necessary at all. Although little connotations may be lost via translation, it is a translator’s skill to minimize these without resorting to methods like TL notes/leaving terms in; leechers, however, have traditionally harped on groups “not doing their job” because they “localized” (a certain degree of which is necessary in any translation to cross language/culture barriers) or failed to “explain a joke/pun/reference”. And now, when these devices are being overused, leechers are complaining because the very problem with these devices is now significant: they hinder the mental processing of subtitles.
I personally find gg’s take on Hidan quite amusing and actually support their endeavor. I also have no sympathy for leechers who rage at gg for “ruining their anime” but lack the patience to wait for alternatives to come out, especially if you consider these same alternatives are usually released within a few hours of gg’s release. It’s really your fault and nobody else’s (most definitely not gg’s or alternative groups’) if you downloaded and watched a release gg has made very clear they are trolling with.

@raze: Over the time, my view on these kind of stuff has changed. Now I know quite some japanese (I’m good with languages, so I’m pretty sure I’m above the average weeaboo), and I find TL notes sometimes a bit annoying. I like to have honorifics, since I don’t think it really makes a difference if they are there, and it makes it a lot easier if you eventually end up having to translate a play with some of the honorifics, so you don’t have to make up something.
Now, when it comes down to words, that’s a little difficult. Most things CAN be translated, but do you gain something by doing it? That’s the question the translator has to ask itself. A tiny TL note doesn’t hurt too much, and you should remember it if it comes up again later, so it would technically enhance your viewing experience. What has to be translated and what doesn’t need it, is subjective, and each translator will find it’s own answer. GG worries too much about localizing; they are kinda good at it, but they butcher some stuff in the process; for example, their releases of dororon enma kun, suck pretty hard in my humble opinion, since they kill most of the jokes trying to translate them. Sadly, a lot of those play on onomatopoeias so shikatanai.
Anyway, I really don’t think you want to read all my rant, so TL;DR, while it might be an obvious troll, I still find it offensive. One thing is saying “Fuck you, we translate how we think it’s best”, and other thing is “Lol, you so stupid, look how I make fun of you badly translating a show you like”. I still download other releases form them, but I don’t appreciate their sense of humor.

I don’t download nothing from gg”vagina-bones” subs, and if I do I take out the subs from their release and modify the subtitles, and then I joined again the mkv file. And UTW thank you very much for this episode of Hidan No Aria, I really appreciate your hard work.

I tried downloading gg release (or well, half of it) and I don’t quite get the point. Modifying the translation and adding unnessesary TL notes just to make some lame jokes? Well, that is one of the reason I avoid gg…
Keep the trolling outside the release, for example instead of renaming the mkv title to “Lolies and Railguns”, use it as the title on the blog entry. No matter how fun it is, it still screws up the ordering in my screenshots folder…

Why can’t you just enjoy a quality release? Enjoyment of anime doesn’t require that you agree with every translator in existence. So what if you hate gg’s sense of humor? Don’t use their releases. Voting in a democracy doesn’t mean you vote for every candidate just because they are running.
It also bothers me how many people criticize UTW for being “late”. Granted, several releases have come out later than usual for them, but it is still very VERY fast. Keep in mind that they are donating their time from what I assume are busy lives, to provide you with hours of free entertainment simply for their love of anime.
TL;DR Don’t be a jerk.
