Whoa looks the real plot is starting to unravel now as we are about to head into the last 7 episodes of the series. Roughly from what I can tell, we’re at the end of the 5th novel (GOSICK V) currently. The next episode should be taking place at the start of the 6th novel (GOSICK VI), which leaves us with 2 more novels after this. There’s currently 7 novels in press, and the 8th novel (and final novel in the GOSICK series) will be published along side the final arc of the anime, according to the author (Kazuki).
The progression looks like it’ll be: GOSICK VI -> 18, VII -> 19-22 and VIII -> 23-24. GOSICK VIII release date is 06/25 which coincides with 23 airing and is pretty much exactly how Kazuki described the wrap-up of both anime and novel will go down.
That’s it for my weekly episodic blog. Enjoy the episode ;>
Also re: the BD’s they are still under consideration. To learn more (waste your time reading further blogging) read on.

1) The actual animation quality doesn’t differ a great deal from the TV aired version
2) The dithering* method used by the studio’s engineers or (external processing studio) on their BD master consists of a fine ordered dither & random noise on gradients and flat areas. Now this is where the problem lies: to make it easy on the eyes they have randomized and softened the noise to blend it into the dullish dark look the animators used for the show. This isn’t very compression friendly basically, and also quite difficult to replicate and reapply in the case of downscaling the video to 1280×720.
As people have seen one group’s encoder (who I won’t mention) decided to throw a shit-ton of bitrate at the 1080p (I haven’t seen it myself so I can’t say how it came out), needless to say the result was ~3gb 1080p encodes per episode. In my humble opinion, at this point if HDD space is not of concern I would recommend to download a BD ISO or BD Remux instead. It will look better, there won’t be any losses from compression, and the episodes are only ~7gb each. If I had to choose for this series for my personal watching it would be just download the BD’s themselves or remuxes of them into mkv (subs can be easily adapted this way).
I’m going to try some things and see if I can get it to a reasonable size per episode for 720p, my target is around 7-800mb max. If this isn’t achievable without killing the original dither or being able to redither it to an acceptable similarity to the source then I won’t be picking it up period. I don’t want to deal with people complaining about things like “this is too big”, “this is a lolupscale”, “x group encoded it at 150mb and it looks fine why are your encodes so big”, “anime should only be max 350mb per episode”, yada yada, and considering it’s a 12 month long release schedule, putting up with that for 12 months on end is something I don’t have the patience to handle.
Gosick BD tl;dr
If I can’t find a way to encode it within maybe 7-800mb limit and keep it looking similar to the source at 1280×720, I won’t be doing them. Rather I will recommend getting the BDMV’s or BD MKV remuxes, because this is just one of those cases where it makes sense to do so. I don’t plan to rape the source just to make downloaders happy, so I’d rather not do it in that case.

Thanks for the releases so far, ar et al. Hopefully, this doesn’t end up having a Gecko Ending like every other Bones adaptation.

Kazuki already said it’ll be the same ending as the novels, so I’m expecting good things out of the ending.

  4. 18gb BDMV
I prefer 720p for BD Relase
    tnx for the ep

Good to know it’s going with the original work’s ending coz BONES have a notorious history for doing total AWESOME work on the show then giving it a completely SCREWED up ending that ruins the show. Hopefully the author has a decent ending on his mind!

  6. Leon-Gun on May 16, 2011 at 4:04 am said:

So it seems BONES are starting to sync their work more with the original authors’ work. It’s always pleasant to hear when the anime is treated as an equal to the original material and not merely a cheap marketing ploy of the manga/light novel.

  7. alexc on May 16, 2011 at 4:07 am said:

The encoder in question didn’t throw bitrate at it because he thought the show needed it; he does that for every show. Interested to see what you end up deciding in regards to the Blu-rays. I personally don’t mind how huge the files are, but I wouldn’t want to put up with the whiners either. Thanks for doing the show.

  8. Neith on May 16, 2011 at 4:08 am said:

This might be CR’s fault but why is it Maman not Mama?

  9. Leon-Gun on May 16, 2011 at 4:09 am said:

Oh, and almost forgot to comment on it but if the BD’s can’t be brought to levels a downloader can handle without sacrificing quality then I also believe it shouldn’t be done. There’s no point in getting the BD version if the quality has to be greatly sacrificed.

  10. @Neith
Because Maman is french for Mother. lol. She actually says Maman, I wanted to change it to Mother but apparently we’d already let it slide in the past so we kept it for consistency. I think we missed fixing up one Mother->Maman in the preview, that’ll be fixed for batch.

If it’s not worth the effort then don’t do it, in either case I appreciate your work. and do hope you will find a way to fit the filesize limit and not destroy the source quality since I love your work. Thanks as always ar!

Well if you don’t intend to make any major changes to the scripts then I say don’t bother wasting your time doing the BDs as most BDs I see these days aren’t THAT much of an improvement over the HDTVs other than the watermark and various sponsor scrolling. (I don’t have encoder eyes, and neither should the mass leechers)
And if the episodes are up to 700-800mb just for 720p… wooow… don’t think I’d want to waste my internet downloading that.

We speedsub 2 shows on the Friday, we deserve to slack off on the weekend ;> It just so happens that Gosick airs the Saturday, can’t be helped. We might surprise you guys for the final episode and blow your mind with a speedsub of the release, of course this is solely reliant on me waking up at 4-5am. We’ll see what happens come that day.

  19. ar: That’s awesome. I actually think Bones treats the endings of their adaptations very well, save for Soul Eater, but knowing that the anime ending will be the canon one is great; I won’t have to learn more moon to enjoy the full Gosick experience. Now I’m very excited and looking forward to the ending.
See you guys on Thursday for Dat Flower, eh?

  20. Soul on May 16, 2011 at 6:11 am said:

Oh having an actual speedy sub of the last episode would be AWESOME.
I can wait for the other ones, but having the last one early makes it a little bit more special.

Yeah, I actually have to go with the whole “don’t really need to BDs” on this one. You’ve already got great visual/sound quality and no censoring to deal with. Now, if there are any decent extras on the BD’s; those might be nice, if possible…

The in-file title of the episode (at least in the mkv version) is the title of the next one. I mean – http://eworm.yoyo.pl/GosickTitle.jpg (down there)

  25. Anon on May 16, 2011 at 8:26 am said:

Just wondering, why do you guys always release Gosick late compared to your other shows?

  26. @onymous
Because we already used Maman in a much earlier episode and I didn’t realize it her calling her mother than in french. I figured it was some random persons name lol. It’s too late to change it now. I would have used Mother otherwise. It is more fitting to her speech.
    @eworm
Oops. I’ll fix that in the batch at the end. Must have set the wrong title for episode 17 in my muxing batch heh. As long as I didn’t mess the typesetting up at least!
    @Anon
Because it’s only Raze and I who work on it, and we’re busy during the weekends so we do it when time permits. It’s better than nothing I suppose.

  27. Diogo4D on May 16, 2011 at 10:06 am said:

    Thank you very much.
And you release fast (1 month would be late). Keep up the good work.

hey, guys… i wonder if u will update the script for gosick so i can download it??? cause i don’t know how to use batch download…

  29. ITT: Ungrateful people with zero patience.
Like guys, seriously. This might come as a surprise to some of you but y’know, we like, have a life? And like, my sleep > your anime? I mean, like, we don’t get paid for this shit, and if, y’know, I have a family outing, friends are throwin’ a party, or ma bitch is offerin’ me her honeypot, what kinda fool would, like, choose to sub anime instead?
But honestly, guys. Bitching for us to hurry up with stuff will likely result in the opposite effect. We’d love to release earlier and so forth for the people who support us patiently, but when we see stuff like “stop slacking noobs” it’s kinda hard to motivate ourselves to do the work.
And __ar: I thought speedsubbing the last episode was supposed to be a secret. >_> Watch, now people will bitch at us when we don’t release within 6 hours of airing because we “broke our promise”.

  30. Lambdadelta on May 16, 2011 at 10:31 am said:

You guys always take ages, but I don’t mind waiting for you cause your subs are the best :3

  31. @Raze
Nah speedsub won’t be 6hrs lol, a Gosick speedsub is 12-24hrs. It’s half the usual time we take to release most weeks ;> All part of the ???????? my ??!

  32. So wait… are you just doing 720p encodes of the BDs or are you also doing 1080p as well? You didn’t really say

    TL Note: Keikaku means plan.

@ag: while they did say what resolution will be their target, you seem to not be able to read it.

seems kinda pushy 2ep for 1 novels.. oh well, hope it wont left us dissapointed. and im looking forward for the ending 😀

  36. @Gaku
    You forget a furigana note!
Furigana Note: ?? is written as “Akkei” meaning Evil Scheme, but it is being read as “Keikaku” which means “Plan”, therefore Keikaku means (Evil) Plan.

Exactly how does the book order work? Between the six Gosick books, the prequel GosickS, and the ones that fit in between the actual Gosick novels…
    In short, I’m really confused.

  42. @DExM
From what I understand the order goes like this:
    GOSICKs I
    GOSICK I
    GOSICK II
    GOSICK III
    GOSICK IV
    GOSICKs II
    GOSICK V
    GOSICK VI
    GOSICKs III
    GOSICK VII
    GOSICK VIII
GOSICKs isn’t a prequel, it’s just stories that run along the same time axis as the the main GOSICK novel series. Episode 1 of the Anime was a mix of GOSICKs I & GOSICK I. Haru Kitaru Shinigami (The Reaper That Comes In Spring) which is the first chapter of GOSICKs I is how the anime started off, telling the story where Kujo first arrived at the Academy. Then it diverges later into GOSICK I, all but except Avril was left out of the story until later episodes.
GOSICKs II was partly covered in Ep12, the Summer Vacation that Kujo & Vic spend together. GOSICKs III probably won’t be covered by the looks of it, but the time axis for it is roughly right before Episode 19 of the anime.

  43. Take it easy guys, there’s no reason to rush. We can be grateful enough to get nice subs from you at all. You who are doing it for free. :><:
Thanks a lot for subbing this show and keep it up! 😀

To _ar and everyone else at UTW:
I’m willing to go with 720p encodes of Gosick over 1080p. I have done the same to other animes especially BD releases of older animes. A lot of older animes are better at the lower resolution just due to their age. Now, there are cases where the studio does a half-assed job or completely ignorant job and upscales a DVD source to 720p and even 1080p and call it a day. In those cases, I’d go with the 720p and be done with it. I am very particular with image quality. If the 1080p is over dithered and there are slight hints of artifacts, I’d go with 720p if it has better image quality. I’m sure you guys can do it. Your Amagami, Angel Beats and B-gata/H-kei releases were fine to watch especially on my connected 32-inch LCD HDTV.
On the case of whether speed of your releases bothers me or not, it doesn’t. I’m actually a patient person and would be willing to wait to get your release over another group. I’ve been watching fansubbed anime since the mid-90s when releases were at 640×480 resolution in MPG or AVI files. And, that’s when downloading full seasons over 56k took weeks through IRC, DC++, or torrent.

    @WAWA:
I didn’t get DSL until 2004, and at the time in my area the fastest speed DSL was 3 Mbit/s at $29.95 USD a month. Heck, my old University of California campus was on a SINGLE 10 Mbps DSL line and was not upgraded to fiber-optic until 2007-ish.
That DSL was from AT&T and in Southern California. And, in my area where I live, we were practically behind Los Angeles County in terms of DSL availability. Heck, cable internet from TimeWarner and Charter wasn’t available until a few years later around 2006. U-verse was finally added in 2008/2009 to my area. Verizon FIOS is still slowly being made available here– only three cities in my entire county.
Basically put: US has suck-ass Internet infrastructure and lags behind Europe and Japan especially in speed and quality. It’s going to be a miracle if the national broadband plan is ever implemented– 1.5 to 3 Mbps DSL in rural areas.

Although, strictly speaking, maman is a term used by children to describe their mother, and would normally be translated as mum or mummy.

  52. Can you imagine Vic using mummy? lol

True. Mind you, her aloof attitude is a bit of a front, and underneath she is still something of an insecure little girl. This softer side often shows when she is talking about her maman.
