Let’s shake the doggie minoshiro and see if that fixes it.

As the chief culprit behind the delay, it falls to me to write this release post. There’s really not much I can say in my defense. I’ve tried to move my social obligations out of the way of Shinsekai Yori for the past months, but with it airing on a Friday evening, this wasn’t always possible.
I’ve enjoyed this show and working on it a great deal. It saddens me that the budget and the sales were so low, but maybe the zeitgeist is just different.

Glad I checked the site again just now. When I saw the delay post, I didn’t look at the date and thought I’d have to wait till Sunday. And then suddenly…wild episode appears!
Thank you very much for the release!
Btw are you still planning on doing the BDs? I loved the quality of the first episode.

4. I thought this was a pretty awesome show too. Then again, the depressing factor might have caused many people to drop it. I know a friend who dropped it after the Karma Demon part.

Thanks for the video and appreciate the post for the “delay”. I think we all managed to live our lives without Shin Sekai for 12 hours longer without going insane. Great work as always and look forward to more in the future.

Oh, thank you! I was already depressed about the unexpected Maoyuu break this week when reading the SSY delay news last night. Nice to find this out sooner than forecast!
I hope this Shun thing doesn’t piss me off, but I was smacking forehead when he said, “that’s not a Fiend.” It’s been raised as a Queerat, so its mental restraints probably apply to attacks on Queerats…but it’s otherwise free to wage war. It can defend against and disarm Kiroumaru’s army while the rest of the Robber Flies do the dirty work. I guess these trans-species soldiers would rely on their facial tattoos to distinguish each other from the human enemy. Pretty smart, Squealer. Now Saki just needs to find some makeup and a mirror….
Preview! Uh-oh, looks like somebody already commandeered the gasmasks!
It’s been awesome so far, my only wish at this point is that it’s given a well deserved dark or depressive ending. The last thing I’d want to see is Saki adopting the fiend because it resembles Maria or something stupid like that.

21. Thanks a lot!
No need to worry about the short delay 😀 We know you guys have a lot to do on your own lives, we are all thankful you are translating this series for us! Good luck, can’t wait to watch this episode!

22. Thanks a lot guys! Damn, this anime is awesome.

If I had to guess why this doesn’t sell well, I’d say:
It’s because this series is so damn hard to get into. The beginning crushes us with too many terms (Fiends, Karma Demons, Canti, Queerats, Tainted Cats) and too little info/explanation as to what those are; not to mention the first scenes of the first few episodes that seem like they’re totally unrelated to the main story and don’t get explained until after 5 or so episodes.
People get confused, then bored, then they ragequit.
That’s my theory anyways, thanks for the episode guys 🙂

This show is seriously in my top 3 list. The atmosphere and theme is just awesome and the show is so immersive. Some parts were a bit awkward to watch (you know which), but in the whole the story is just so well planned and presented. Definitely worth calling a masterpiece.
Can anyone recommend something similar?

Psycho Pass. Have you tried this one? Noitamina show. Dystopic future. Detectives. Guns. A system that can quantify people’s criminal tendencies and apply judgment based on this through the police, not just that but the system literally governs everything, it decides who lives and who dies, people are peaceful as they never been. It wonderful, right? Watch and see for yourself.
Truth to be told, one of the best Noitamina show ever. It’s still on the run.

I don’t know which part you liked exactly (I myself have to marathon it from the Karma Demon (I really like how it sounds)) part forward. But, if you like surprising revelations or overturn in the plot or dystopic futures orjust a history that is sober or intelligent, you could try
–>Psycho Pass (read description above)
–>Guilty Crown (another Noitamina show, with dystopic future. Due to an unknown disease Japan in under heavy control to maintain order. A boy that thinks he’s ordinary lives day after day and likes a certain singer till he caught himself among people who stole a bioweapon, this singer among them )
–>Code Geass (this time round the British Empire took over almost all the world, Japan is not an exception. A simple boy that hates the empire but can do nothing happen to caught himself amidst a “terrorist attack”, when he’s about to die, he have the chance and accept a power, he can command anything to a person just once. He then starts a journey against the empire. Good anime )
Additionally, you could try
–>Cashern Sins (a man (robot) that’s responsible for the deaths happening to all robots in the world, how he feel, who is he and other questions are answered through the series. It has it’s good parts. It’s not set in Japan, but rather in a destroyed world.

It was a very small part of the story. But it’s impressive that you’re still around more than 15 episodes later, just to tell us all how homophobic you are.^^

32. Thanks so much. Can’t remember an anime blowing my mind this badly since Lain. I’m guessing the fact its adopted from novel may have contributed to relatively poor sales. Plots this rich usually hold up better in prose and maybe the Japanese bookworms aren’t as hot for anime as the manga/LN/VN crowd. Just a thought.
Really hope we get a strong, coherent end. It is all it needs be a top 5 all time for me. Thanks again guys

It was pretty obvious what the true nature of the “fiend” was when Saki questioned it on last week’s episode, Shun basically confirms it this week for people that can’t read between the lines. Though I’m still curious as to what Kiroumaru’s true intent is.
I’m guessing Yakomaru probably knows his bluff isn’t going to last forever and had planned this right off the bat. Considering that the fiend still relatively young, it’s probably not capable of in-depth critical thinking yet, but it’s only a matter of time. Once it is consciously aware of its true identity, Yakomaru’s plan would stop dead in its tracks, and his entire colony would probably get slaughtered as a result. And before that happens, Yakomaru is using his bluff to cause the humans to go into panic and search for the bio weapon to stop the fiend. This is most likely all part of his plan and once they find it, he would probably “reveal” to Saki that the fiend is not really a fiend and use this opportunity to steal it from her. After all, it was a weapon that was specifically designed against Cantus users, he can utilize it against humans as well as erasing the potential threat that the fiend would pose on his colony later on. It’s like killing two birds with one stone.
The role Kiroumaru plays in all this is still pretty unclear. I can’t see him working together with Yakomaru out of his own volition. Maybe his queen is still alive and Yakomaru is using that to threaten him or something. That would explain how Yakomaru knew what they were planning and found their location so effortlessly. The birds Kiroumaru mentioned could very well be his own! But that still doesn’t explain why he came to Tokyo earlier when a third of his forces got wiped out during the expedition. Unless he also found a false Minoshiro and has the same goal of eradicating all the humans…
Well, regardless, I get the impression that Kiroumaru is truly loyal to humans and unlike Yakomaru who reeks of cunning and deceit during the first 10 seconds of his air time. There must be some sort of extenuating circumstances.

34. Anonymous on March 10, 2013 at 3:34 am said:

Shun has a body now? O.O
The aspects noted about Kiroumaru were significantly interesting. Frowning at Inui-san for sending Satoru off alone with him without communicating what he’d noticed first. –and that impression strengthened by how prepared he was for the two to not join them in the submarine.
The next episode looks as though it should have some pleasant/interesting revelations present.

Not exactly the same feel/atmosphere, some elements, that is. The great maybe being the dystopia and the fact they have a solid storyline with revelations, etc. Truth to be told, I like psycho pass (in question of blood, Shiki (another Noitamina show) was somewhat worse). I don’t like gratuitous violence but this time is wrapped with a good history. Also I think kuroneko is pretty kawaii in this one, uh, I mean, inspector Tsunemori.

“This is most likely all part of his plan and once they find it, he would probably “reveal” to Saki that the fiend is not really a fiend and use this opportunity to steal it from her.”
–> It annoys me that it took her so long to find out. I mean it was so damn obvious for several eps. now. Satoru already found out about it, but didn’t want to hear about it from Saki.
Anyways, I sure as hell hope that Maria’s son won’t be the cause for Satoru’s death or something. I honestly could care less about that child. Probably has to do with him being Mamoru’s child who should have been killed by the cats long ago. 😀
Why isn’t Satoru the main character anyways? Saki has been so useless these past eps.
Oh, and my theory:
Anyone wondering why we haven’t seen Yakomaru? What if he’s actually dead and Kiroumaru is pulling the strings now (going as far as even using Yakomaru’s name). That would be something.
Best anime of the season so far IMO, although there are pacing problems, even in this episode.

40. Daniel on March 10, 2013 at 5:03 pm said:

41. Grimiku on March 10, 2013 at 6:01 pm said:

@Sushi & boingman:
Guys, what’s so obvious about fiend’s true nature? For me, this is the most troublesome part of the plot. We know that it’s Maria’s child, based on it’s appearance and the fact that Saki figured it out two episodes ago. That’s all. Have I missed some eps or sthg?
My theory of the role of Kiromaru was slightly diifrent from Sushi’s vision. My guess is he’s been allied with Yakomaru for quite some time now. He might have visted Tokyo long ago because he wanted to get the Psychobuster. He didn’t have enough man standing, or had some other freakishly large problem that rendered him unable to get it. This is why he had to go undercover and somehow force humans to get it for him. The main point is, and I agree with Sushi here, that Queerats need no more fiends, just the Psychobuster. They’re inteligent species, so probably there is a way to produce more of it based on the material Saki found. (Especially when they got their hands on some false minoshiro, a silent assumption for this theory). And of course, all this couldn’t have been planed by Yakomaru, it appears as a plan of a great strategist – Kiromaru. Yakomaru seems more of a political figure, a decoy.
But the fiend? It bugs me…

42. Not sure where several fans are getting off boasting that it was “so obvious” the Fiend wasn’t actually a Fiend when, in-universe, not only did EVERY character label it a fiend, not only among their number was Asahina Tomiko, the only living woman to have seen an actual Fiend before, but the Fiend was animated doing impossibly unhuman things with its body (like when it chased after Saki and Satoru) in ways which mirrored what we’ve seen of previous Fiends (like the one in Asahina’s flashback or the one the children read about in grade school). There was NOTHING to base any “the Fiend isn’t actually a Fiend” hunch off of up through now. They just dropped this plot twist on us out of nowhere. Obvious? If it’s so obvious, point to the actual evidence in previous episodes which tipped you off that it wasn’t really a Fiend. I call bullshit — not on the author, but on those of you who are saying “LOL TOTALLY SAW THAT COMING”. You might as well claim that it’s going to be “so obvious” when the Fiend-that-isn’t-a-Fiend tears apart Yakomaru. Or that it’s going to be so obvious when she kills herself. Or something. Any number of theories and guesses that you can blindly advance yet have absolutely zero supporting evidence for. Like the old saying goes, “even a broken clock is right twice a day.” Make enough crazy guesses and you’re bound to make one that’s right eventually.

43. boingman on March 11, 2013 at 12:07 am said:

Main reason for me that he’s no fiend is that he never killed any Queerats. There has been speculation about this since he aapeared.

44. Mayhem on March 11, 2013 at 2:59 am said:

I wouldn’t say it’s “so obvious” that the fiend isn’t a fiend, but I’m also not terribly surprised–if there is the possibility of a plot twist to make the outcome even more tearing and painful tragic for Saki/the audience, this is def. the kind of show that says “why not?” They delivery on tragedy.
But the likelihood that this whole journey to find the psycho-buster was engineered by Yakomaru seems so plausible it’s hard to understand why the characters haven’t said THIS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA yet. Yes! Let’s go find the weapon that could wipe humans off the face of the planet. We’re the espers fighting the normals + 1 esper, I know, let’s go find the anti-esper biological weapon! NOTHING COULD GO WRONG.
I find the comparison to PSYCHO-PASS a bit odd. I mean, I *really* like PSYCHO-PASS, and they do both have heroine protagonists who are dealing with intense shit and struggling to come into their own, but they’re very different shows. Psycho-Pass is pretty mediocre as a dystopia (imo), but as a coming-of-age-tale for 20something college grads, it’s great. I <3 Akane so much. If you didn’t like it after the first few episodes, I think you should give it another shot, but it is pretty uneven.
I can’t really think of much in anime that feels similar to Shinsekai Yori–the only thing I’m really coming up with are the Uglies/Pretties/Specials novels, which aren’t anime related at all, but do feature somewhat similar dystopias. I guess Another has some of the same brooding suspense feel, but not in a good way (a number of people made that comparison after the first episode, but it was not a compliment). Kino’s Travels aka Kino no Tabi, maybe–similar animation, in some ways, a slower and very understated approach to its plot and protagonist? Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero (Urobuchi’s other, more-famous-than-PSYCHO-PASS-shows) also start out having you think something’s one way and then slowly and with maximum pain and tragedy turn you around the opposite direction.
Terra e, maybe? No. 6? And not just coz of the gay. But I’d say that Shinsekai Yori is pretty unique.

>It was pretty obvious what the true nature of the “fiend” was WHEN Saki questioned it on last week’s episode
Apparently the fiend not being a fiend wasn’t as obvious as I thought. However, it IS pretty obvious that a good number of people that watch SSY aren’t capable of reading comprehension 101.

46. Damnitall on March 11, 2013 at 3:56 am said:

yes I am a little dense or maybe lazy to go back to previous episodes so… you guys have been discussing about the fiend not being a fiend and I am still lost… can you please explain what he/she is then? a karma demon? thanks

47. margot on March 11, 2013 at 3:57 am said:

After seeing the “fiend”, I didn’t think it was a fiend. From what everyone has described a fiend in the anime, it’s a violent, out of control person that commits heinous crimes on everyone and anyone. It doesn’t smile and laugh like it’s having a play date at the park. It doesn’t bow down to queerats. It doesn’t hold people hostage. It doesn’t take orders. The reason Maria’s kid is doing such “unhumanly” things is because its original cantus hasn’t been sealed like everyone else.

48. Marelt on March 11, 2013 at 5:44 am said:

I must have missed it, then, but I thought a Fiend was just a generic terms for any human who doesn’t have the normal death feedback mechanisms. Admittedly, it has been a while since I saw the early episodes that introduced the concepts, so I may have forgotten the actual definition.
Either way, what I’m far more worried about is the fact that a single girl who is severely distressed and at times delusional is currently holding a vial of what basically amounts to weapon-grade smallpox. If Satoru does bite the dust soon, then I can easily see things going off the deep end even without Yakomaru’s interference.

49. @Marelt
I’m in the school of thought that a Fiend is basically an urban legend and the reality of it is that it’s just a human without the feedback.
One of the early episodes showed one of the temple monks getting sick from killing Queerats, so it’s my opinion that the feedback depends partly on the comfort threshold and overall “humanity” of the person with the Cantus. A kid that’s basically Helen Keller isn’t going to make much of a distinction.

50. BillHive on May 1, 2013 at 3:54 am said:

Saki… is so freaking hot.
@Chris
Its not that fiends don’t have a death feedback system, the problem lies in how the system works. How it works is that once the brain realizes that it is responsible for the death of its own race, it will send a signal the heart (presumably) to kill itself. What fiends essentially are, are mentally ill people whose brain can no longer send that signal. This can come in many forms; either they no longer have a sense of responsibility, or they can no longer identify with other humans, or they’ve lost their entire sense of identity or whatever. Point is, the problem is with how they perceive things and not directly with the death feedback system itself.
