It’s finally here! On behalf of the UTW-THORA team, I proudly present to you the third Rebuild of Evangelion movie!
UTW was only two months old when we released the EVA 2.22 movie almost three years ago, and at the time I wasn’t expecting to be working on the third movie. But here we are today, with pretty much the same team, but with three years extra experience!
We’ve teamed up with THORAnime once again to bring you this release. Head over to their site too to give them your thanks!
A few smallish translation/editing notes off the top of my head:
1) I’ve decided to translate パターン青 (literally “pattern blue”) as “blood type blue” in this release, in line with the official English rendition of the term. I used “pattern orange” in 2.22 (pattern blue was never spoken).
2) All other translations for in-universe terminologies are consistent with our 2.22 release, including “Battle Stations One/Two” (it’s translated as “Condition II” on-screen in the movie, but not only is it a somewhat lossy translation, it would also be a problem when we have to distinguish it from another formation later on, which we have translated as “Guard State One/Two”).
3) The term “Lilin” is treated as a collective noun (i.e. like the word “humanity”) in the release. It’ll make sense to those of you who know what the term refers to in the EVA universe.
4) The “networking” part of Asuka’s nickname for Mari (“Networking Four-eyes”) refers to how Mari supposedly used her network of acquaintances to become an EVA pilot (we used “Favored Four-Eyes” in the preview). I thought it was a closer translation than what we had before (read here for more info) but the meaning seems to be lost to some of you, so I apologize for that.
Special thanks go to fnord, Minami, and archdeco for their work on the ED kara.
Please enjoy!

for those wondering how to extract the embedded subtitle,
download http://www.videohelp.com/tools/mkvtoolnix and http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MKVExtractGUI-2
extract all of them on one folder.
Run the “mkvextractgui”.
Then drag-and-drop [UTW-THORA] Evangelion 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo [BD][1080p,x264,flac][F2060CF5].mkv to the “mkvextractgui” window.
choose the subtitle (click the checkbox), and press extract.

How comes the running time of the file is 1 hour 35 min when all shops and information sites say the bluray is 1 hour 45 min (105min)?
Even imdb and the wikipedia give 105 min for the extended edition… It’s also weird if true, because it makes this third movie shorter than the other two. The first was 1 hour 40 min.

46. Thanks!

47. How long till 720p?

48. Badass! I thank you guys so very much for all the hard work you put out into making this happen. Saying you rock is an understatement!

Hello.
We were supposed to have Eva 3.0 in the cinemas for the annual Japanese Animated Film Festival. We were one of the first ones to show the Eva 2.0 movie outside of japan and we wanted to be the ones again for 3.0. Sadly the producers told that they can’t show the Japanese version in Europe and we’d have to wait for a European version. The film festival will start next week without the Eva and here is why I wrote the whole thing – thank YOU for making this possible once again – we fans will see the movie, thanks to you, even before the festival begins. Most of us have resisted the temptation of watching the camrip for a long time, waiting specifically for th UTW-Thora release. You guys are the best!
Greetings from the ever cold and forgotten country of Estonia.

120. Peejays on April 27, 2013 at 8:01 pm said:

24 fps eh … alright..
The bluray is 24 fps as well , so that seems ok.
Strange though…/shrug.
Another matter ,
For those wanting to do a remux … this UTW release (the 1080p version , i haven’t checked the other) starts at frame 14782 in 00002.m2ts (there is a 10 minute fun live action evangelion before that , utw should totally sub it for shits and giggles)
Load the m2ts in mkvtoolinx , go to general options , select the 5th split mode. use the value 14782- in the “parts:” field. Start muxing..
Then using the file that results from that , load this UTW release in mkvtoolnix , add the mkv you created in the above paragraph , move it up to second place in the list , uncheck the original first place. Select the new track as default yes.
This works better than begging for scripts , it keeps chapters etc intact.

121. IzzyData on April 27, 2013 at 8:25 pm said:

All anime is at 24 fps. This is just how it is produced.

122. Captain on April 27, 2013 at 8:25 pm said:

Did the (Japanese) scripts that came with 3.33 BD contribute to this speedy release (less than a week!)?
And second question, is the runtime discrepancy (95 vs 105 minutes, as per other posters/Wikipedia) due to the Ghibli live-action “Giant God Short” included with the 3.33 movie?

123. boingman on April 27, 2013 at 8:25 pm said:

@Peejays:
Huh, what do you mean? 24 fps is standard for blu-ray stuff. Or did you hope for 48 fps. 😉

124. boingman on April 27, 2013 at 8:27 pm said:

@Captain: Pretty sure that’s the reason. The Ghibli short is a chapter before the 3.33 movie.

125. Peejays on April 27, 2013 at 8:51 pm said:

I meant , the bluray and this release are actual 24.0000 not 23.9760 .
This is not very common.
24 fps is almost exclusively used in theaters. Anything broadcast , video or media is usually 23.9760 when film mode is used. Broadcast usually being 60i TC’d.
It’s not that this is bad in any way , I just found it curious that’s why I mentioned it.

That resolution…not really satisfying a 1080p tag

151. Poké on April 28, 2013 at 7:25 am said:

@IZEROII
1080p is a standard . It has meaning beyond being an indicator how how many scanlines it includes. Even if it’s cropped, the fact either the width is 1920 or the height is 1080 makes it 1080p. 1920×960 is 1080p in 2:1 1440×1080 is 1080p in 4:3 .
A 1080p display – since that is what the standard implies , that he stream is made to be , ideally be viewed on – is 1920 x 1080 in logical resolution. Media with that tag is ideally played on those displays.
nb:
There is one area where some groups make a faux-pas , that’s when they crop both horizontal and vertical resolutions (some streams have artifacts on the sides) and not pad either back to 1920 or 1080 respectively with black.

152. “Networking four eyes” is equally weird in Japanese. It took a couple weeks of internet debate and eventually an official subtitle check for Japanese viewers to confirm what Asuka was saying (konemegane). If some of Mari’s lines don’t make sense at first like “networking four eyes,” then that’s actually an accurate translation.

153. Cherrub on April 28, 2013 at 7:34 am said:

Rofl.
Cropping a 1920 x 1080 stream to 1920 x 928 doesn’t suddenly make it 928p.
Cropping a 1920 x 1080 stream to 1920 x 720 doesn’t make it 720p!!
You need to see it as a whole.
While black compresses to almost nothing it’s still not reason enough to leave in black that’s mod 16.

@ Koi
Subbing a movie (and a movie like Evangelion in particular) takes a long time and unfortunately I don’t have the time to retranslate a movie that’s already been done multiple times, and officially at that. Sorry.

157. Amazing film and FANTASTIC WORK as always from you guys…THX!

158. Great work, guys. Have to say, though, it’s rare that a movie disappoints me so utterly that I actually become angry, but regrettably 3.0 falls into that category for me. I may just be biased because the characters are so near and dear to me, but this ambiguous alternate interpretation shit, as well as discarding all of the plot points from the preview, is making me think that Eva may have finally jumped the shark for real.

161. Death Angel you must have not watched anime in a long time. First off, when something doesn’t work it’s smart to try updating your software, that would have done the job. Anime is released in 10-bit nowadays and your old players can’t play that. Alternatively, you could install CCCP which is the generally recommended playing environment.

10bit h264. Sigh.
My media centre won’t play that. And no, it’s not a matter of having up to date codecs, it’s the lack of hardware decoding support. You simply can’t decode HD h264 on a single core atom, which is why I have a powerful GPU – but VDPAU doesn’t support hardware decoding of 10bit video, and it’s likely to never do so.
Guess I’ll spend a few hours transcoding.
I know the anime scene is dead set on doing 10bit everywhere, but perhaps the 1080p releases could be the 10bit ones and the 720p files 8bit for those of us who really don’t care about the miniscule improvement in quality but do rely on hardware decoding? I mean, if every last pixel of quality is such a huge issue for people – why would they be downloading 720p at all? Seems like a reasonable compromise to me…
Thanks for the work on the translations though, it’s very much appreciated. For that at least, I owe you guys a beer.

you are probably using a non H10P compatible h264 codec.
for a quickfix , download mplayer2 . 1 exe runs all without having to install a crapload of codecs.
http://mplayer2.srsfckn.biz/
unpack , drag mkv on mplayer2.exe .
Your best option is mpc-hc + lav + madvr + ac3filter + XY-vsfilter. , with all those configured right. And in x86. not x64.

Madvr works on any gpu .
If you’re talking about h264 decoding – offloading to gpu , that’s mostly LAV’s business.
Even though I have a nvidia 590 I get the best results using my cpu to decode h264. Especially when playing multiple videos at once.
In Madvr you can use your gpu for some of the scaling algorithms and deinterlacing mostly..
The best ones are cpu only anyway , the average ones (bilinear bicubic , which are very acceptable) are quite fast.
When using Madvr , the typical noob mistake is to not install the full spectrum of x86 libraries. Since MacVR is x86 only you _have_ to use everything in x86 mode. (this really isn’t bad, the why’s Im not going to explain now)
Use madvr , yes , but you don’t HAVE to crank it up to full .
Lav has a lot of offloading capability.
http://i.imgur.com/xIHUmOZ.png
While tweaking , press ctrl-j , keep an eye on dropped , delayed , presentation while tweaking.
Mess with options in madvr , ie , prerendering , presentation queue , using different devices for presentation and DXVA. disabling desktop composition.
Also make sure when you use a monitor that displays a full range , to use 0-255 (pc-levels) for output. This is not the case for all displays , so choose carefuly , only 1 is right for you..
I could go on for ever .. I’ll stop here.

I don’t know why, but I can’t find one version of this movie that doesn’t have any black lines on the top and bottom of the movie. UTW’s is the best so far for having the smallest, but how can I get rid of these for an AMV (without zooming in)? I’ve been downloading the 720p versions fyi.

231. Drakeula on April 29, 2013 at 8:12 pm said:

Okay, so I think I get it’s an aspect ratio problem, but is there a version of the movie that has the aspect ratio of the first two films: 16:9?

232. Anonymous on April 29, 2013 at 8:43 pm said:

Any version of the movie that’s 16:9 will either be stretched, resulting in a noticeably vertically distorted image, or will have the left and right sides chopped off which could at times remove critical information from scenes. The only proper aspect ratio for the movie is 2.35:1, anything else is incorrect.

AC3filter has long been a very acceptable, fast decoder. However recent versions , especially when using spdif give playback issues. Stick with either the liba52 libavcodec and libdts included with ffdshow or opt for LAV audio decoder.
If you have unwarranted frame drops or duplicates , try switching audio codecs when troubleshooting.

29:15~ she called 3th boy “wanko-kun” (she called him wanko-kun @48:19 in Evagelion 2 also.)
29:25 looks at that face… her lip… isn’t that cat-face?
konemegane… most likely play on work with koneko megane so “Kitty four eyes” is more what i think it meant for Mari’s nick name, nya~!

239. @ someone
Asuka would probably just out and call her “nekomegane” in that case. “Kone” almost certainly refers to connections.
I guess I’ll also use this chance to further explain why I preferred “Networking” over “Favored” for Mari’s nickname. As I mentioned previously, the former is a closer translation than the latter despite its awkwardness, the reason being “favored” is too general. When we look at the nicknames Asuka gave to the various pilots in 2.22 and 3.33, they’re all favored in some way.
エコヒイキ – someone that a powerful person favors on personal grounds to an unfair or unjust extent; refers to Rei. I translated this as “Commander’s Pet” in 2.22.
ナナヒカリ – someone who is favored over others because he or she is the powerful person’s son or daughter; refers to Shinji. I translated this as “Daddy’s Boy” in 2.22.
Konemegane is a tough nickname to translate either way, but with all options weighed, I honestly thought that “Networking Four-eyes” was the lesser evil.

i see, in that sense… the way Mari just dropped in the team like in Evagelion 2 could make Asuka nicked her something along “Four eyes with/has connections/pull” and the way Mari behaves so much cat-like make Asuka nick her konemegane, a double meaning for having “connection” and “kitty” behave, if Asuka nicked her konekomegane then it lack the “four eyes has big-shot sponsors” but when using konemegane it has both way of feeling in its. A four eyes kitty has some big-shot behind.
Well that’s what i thought, only way for sure is to ask the one wrote the script. :))

@Tylrgamster14
There is a 47 GB bluray rip available on U****T .
To the implied question of “why 10 bit an d not 8 like the original” . in 4:2:0 colourspace is not true 24 bit is not available for every pixel. To compensate for that dithering is used , dithering is what is used in black and white newspapers for example to generate the grays of a photo. In the case of video this is more nuanced since it doesn’t need to go from full black to full white but from one shade of a color to a quite near one.
When encoding in hi10p , the original frame , when being encoded loses some detail where there is little to no contrast with adjourning blocks (ie mainly the parts that are dithered) the resulting image has a higher colourspace that is arguably closer to the original frame before being encoded in 8 bit on the bluray.
In extremis , imagine the original of a picture has a green part. it has to be encoded into a lower colourspace where green is not available. That green is replaced by alternating yellow and blue pixels. Due to the lack of bandwidth in further conversion that checkboard of blue and yellow is made into a green patch again, then re-encoded in a colourspace where green is available…
Dithering uses a lot of bandwidth , and is a “patch” for a lack of colourspace.
Using hi10p mitigates the impact of a “loss of detail” which in reality is a “loss of dithering”.
In the same line of thought , downscaling also creates new colours. This is also a reason why encoding in hi10p of broadcast anime (broadcast in 1440×1080 downscaled to 1280×720) is a good thing.

255. Peejays on May 1, 2013 at 9:52 am said:

HI10p uses 4:2:2 colourspace. HI444pp uses 4:4:4 colourspace (24 bits per pixel for every pixel).
I personally have encoded pieces of video using HI444pp (scaled down video from 4K to 720p) The impact on the video size is very very acceptable, mainly due to the fact gradients can stay gradients and don’t need to be dithered. If source material in full 24 bit were to be available , hi444pp would be a very good option for encoding. Since a few years there are x264 builds who offer that option. Most codecs also decode it (added about the same time hi10p was added) Encoding a dithering heavy video from a limited colourspace source into HI444pp does take it’s toll and is not advisable.

Now we I’ll need to wait like another 3 years for 4.44(4.04?). When I was watching 3.33 I was like “Everybody finds love in the end, yeah?” …. and then Anno punch. This movie was so lonely, I felt exactly what Shinji felt- loneliness, confusion, fear, destruction of psyche. I would gladly accept Rebuild 2.775 to tell us what happened between 2.22 and 3.33 if it won’t be the part of 4.0. Even as 30min OVA. Movie felt so short… hope 4.0 will be like 3-4h long.

First of all, thank you to UTW for the time and effort put into this release. It will tide many of us over until an official U.S.A. blu-ray release.
I have had trouble using mkv2vob to convert the 720p mkv file into a file I can place on my 16GB thumb drive and watch on my PS3, and I was wondering if there’s anyone who can help.
Trying to do it the normal way (simply adding the file to mkv2vob), I get an error that says the tsmuxer isn’t working. If I click on cancel, it still proceeds with the process, beginning with transcoding the audio, which takes a short bit. Then, it transcodes the video, which takes an unusually looong time. It finishes the conversion, but the video of the file ends up as less than spectacular, with random blockyness of varying colors and color bleeds. The video seems watchable, but nothing like it should look (the original download from here is perfect).
I’ve had the tsmuxer error before, and after a little research, found a youtube video that used/suggested a program called mkvmerge GUI. The video suggested opening the origin file in this program first, and, upon highlighting the video and audio parts, going into “extra options”, and under “cues” and “compression”, switch each option to “none”. I have tried this with an unrelated movie, and it worked. However, with the 720p Eva 3.33 file, there are 4 different parts: video, audio, subtitles, and chapters. The “extra options” for the chapters part is not changeable, though the chapters part can be unticked. So far, no luck.
I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, or what it causing the problem, but if anyone can help, it’d be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

260. Great release you guys. Unfortunately the movie was terrible, but hopefully the next one will be alot better.

Just got done watching it about 2 hours ago and man what a weird ass movie, i can tell you one thing they weren’t lying about switching the story up a bit, the ending was very weird also it did not make any since but hopefully 4.44 is more understandable. they also said they were going to switch up the ending a bit also and it kind scares me. lol

262. @WanderingSteve I’m assuming the encoding utility part of Tsmuxer isn’t 10bit compatible?
Obviously what you want to do is transcode the 720p 10bit release into an 720p 8bit (probably hardsubbed into an MP4 or MKV container, as I doubt PS3 has xy-VSFilter to effectively render the softsubbed ED kara).
You just need to find a transcode utility that supports 10bit if you don’t want to learn command-line x264.
Every utility does the same thing really – it demuxs the video and audio and encodes them separately and muxes them back into the container afterwards.

267. Charkelle on May 9, 2013 at 8:34 am said:

So I finally got around to watching this… And I feel like they somehow managed to make this one even more confusing than the original series was. I wasn’t sure that was even possible. If the intent was to make the viewer feel as lost as Shinji was, I’d say they succeeded there.
I still enjoyed it overall, and can sort of connect the dots in some cases based on the original, but with everything that’s already been changed I can’t say for sure there. I just hope the next one gives us some answers. This one kind of overloaded us with questions as it is, and answered very few of them. I can only imagine how confused the people who have never seen the original series must be, as things probably make a lot less sense without that to make comparisons to.
Also, as much as Shinji’s character still annoys me at times, I actually found him easier to sympathize with here than I usually do (I don’t hate Shinji like some people do, but I’ve always found him hard to actually like). I don’t see how anyone could expect him to act all that much different than he did while refusing to tell him anything at all. Really, the only time he actually started annoying me again was from the point with the spears on, before that his behaviour was really perfectly understandable considering what had happened and how nobody would actually tell him anything.
