Shirley’s cute.
P.S.: Nico script grade: 3/5 (with last week being 3/5)
Nico made some embarrassingly elementary mistakes in the first part of the script, but the second part was quite clean.
Thanks guys.
thank you for this. you guys are the best.
Dead Apostles, now this sounds slightly interesting. Although I do believe an entire series could be made about the church hunting them down.
I want the new ED single! It sounds so better than the regular one.
Is the blonde mage from Prototype? I feel like his face is familiar.
@Lanford
It’s the B-Side from the To The Beginning CD Single.
JOY!
Thanks so much for the episode… I’m curious as to “who the hell Shirley is?” but other than that… I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO IT!
Thanks again and good night!
Thanks! π
@Lanford
That mage is Cornelius Alba from Kara no Kyoukai. He looks like Cornelius, he uses fire, and he still looks FABULOUS, so it must be him.
I’ll always take quality over an immediate release. Thanks UTW.
This episode seems to be weird. Well then – show me what you’ve got, Fate/Zero. By the way, thanks again for this episode, UTW!
Kawaii~~~~~~~~~~~~
thanks for the release, cute post pic π
@Gilgamesh
isn’t that pretty much the point of Tsukihime?
@ Gilgamesh: What γ«γγ have said.
Time of Rejoice!
Thank you everyone at UTW X3 X3
Please know that every efforts made has brought us great happiness
huggsss~~~*
From your faithful follower =3
Thank you!
Thanks!
@γ«γγ
But Tsukihime doesn’t have an anime though.
One of the best episodes. Shows clearly the difference between Shirou & Kiritsugu.
Clearly out of context. I have to scold u. Since u mentioned about Nozoki Ana, i cant do nothing more but wait for the next chapter release :). Can u mention about other titles:D? Im sure peoples would like it .
Thank U!
Thank U!
@TheWonko: Tsukihime does have an anime actually. Albeit, a rather dull one. Could have been better. http://myanimelist.net/anime/169/Shingetsutan_Tsukihime
Also, don’t mean to double comment but does anyone else find her eyes a bit weird? A bit of a lazy-eye goin on there.
@TheWonko
Yes, it does. “Shingetsutan Tsukihime” 2003 J.C.Staff 12 episodes.
Balance, Greyweather: Denying the existence of the Tsukihime anime is a bit of a meme.
This was a really well-done episode. Got so into the peaceful mood of the first half that I actually had to remind myself what show I was watching before the second started up. :3
@Gilgamesh
Isn’t that the entire story of Tsukihime?
Alright, I was expecting the father-killing part but no the Resident Evil part.
This show is too epic to watch carelessly. Gotta set the mood just right, no noise no interruptions no distractions best meal best drink.
You will often hear many people saying “Tsukihime doesn’t have an anime.” because it is so bad that fans simply deny its existence…
I go so far as to say that F/Z and Kara no Kyoukai are the only nasuverse that have anime. Everything else is just too awful to count and smells entirely of what urobuchi derided in his afterward for F/Z.
Thanks UTW! I wait every week for your release, and you never dissapoint!
Albaaaaaaaa!
Also, Natalia is like sex on legs. If only we could see her put that part-succubi lineage to work…
Whaaa? Is that a female Dante in a Resident Evil game filled with Tsukihime enemies?
so that what Touko’s monster does…It’s a portal to an alternate dimension. It explains why Cornelius is here :))
Awesome episode. If only the next one could show little maiya.
@Nick: They’re not zombies, they’re “The Dead”, corpse familiars of Dead Apostles. Shirley however seemed to have been on the ranks of the :Living Dead” which are Dead Apostles who are still governed by base hunger but are not mere beasts (humans with the potential to be magi have a high chance of becoming a Living Dead or a Dead Apostle outright, and she drank the original formula to begin with).
The Dead and Ghouls are almost the same thing except Ghouls can eventually becoming Dead Apostles, The Dead however will forever be “zombies”. Anyway, in Tsukihime and Nasuverse in general Vampirism and “zombies” are pretty much flip sides of the same coin. Lower-level vampires are the zombie-like ones and the ones with actual free-will are the ones who can truly be called “vampires”.
@Mitsubishi: You do know they’re alternate dimensions but they still share a lot of characters. It basically means this is a different version of him, much in the same way Touko is still a magi on the run in both the Tsukihime universe and Fate universe.
@Leon-Gun
Only either Kara no Kyoukai or Tsukihime can take place in any given universe, but it’s never stated which of the two takes place in the universe that the Fate/Zero anime takes place in. It could very well be the same Alba from Kara no Kyoukai, or alternately, maybe Tsukihime is the story that takes place in this universe, instead. I’d, personally, prefer for it to be the former.
What’s better part for a prologue than halfway through the second season? I already thought they would leave this part out of the anime, now to rejoice in parricide
woohoo.. you guys did use Alimango.. as an added “evidence”, they even added up basketball as being played in this island.. Philippines is one of the countries or the only country i know in Asia where basketball is played extensively even in local places.. it is a street sport everywhere here, unlike other countries where football is dominant.. also, the complexion, clothing and homes of people give a very familiar feel.. arghh.. sometimes i want to get back to living in the rural areas again.. too bad only cities have passable internet speed..
@LunarMoon: Presence of Dead Apostles negates possibility of KnK.
@leon gun
I know well about that. I was just making a fun remark on that Cornelius-look-alike in this episode.
Alternate Alba or not, still it’s fun to see that Ufotable referenced Kara no Kyoukai. There’s a kid Kokuto in episode 10… We might see Araya next.
I would kill for a Tsukihime anime with Fate/zeros budget and maybe a 12 episode season or atleast some ovas of Melty Blood
Oh snap it really is Alba. I wanna see Shirley grow up into a full fledged Dead Apostle, though. Speaking of which I heard after Mahoyo, Type Moon wants to remake their doujin game Tsukihime.
And i doubt any more Melty Blood franchises will come out.
@Arashi_Leonhart
There’s always the H-doujins to look forward to for Natalia.
Hopefully.
They’ve apparently had the word of releasing Tsukihime reamke for years…. Nothing new except that they’ll make it…. And Mahoyo was delayed about 2 years from what i heard so who knows. i can’t decide whether i should wait for the remake or just read the original which has hilarious drawing style (I know it was probably awesome back when it first came out)….
Thanks~
SHIT !!!!!
A lot of reference from Type-Moon’s previous works. And all….. EPIC !!!
Type-moon + ufotable = epic action thriller anime, even Kalafina & Kajiura are perfect to make enjoyable OST
And you guys, UTW. You are awesome to help us translate this anime into english language.
I found Kiritsugu’s regret part to be a bit lacking in the episode. I think the episode didn’t give enough focus on how Kiritsugu felt awful for causing the purge of the island because he didn’t kill Shirley right then and then. If I recall correctly, it was him who told the priest about Shirley who in turn contacted the Executioners.
Other than that, it was pretty fine.
nooo, poor shirley ;_;
Thanks! π
nice, so the setting for this ep. is the philippines huh thanks
That was awesome, great episode, thanks for uploading it.
Cheers from brazil.
Oi does anyone know what kind of “watermelon” was Shirley eating?
Thanks for the episode, but is this past of Kiritsugu supposed to make me sympathize with him? Because it didn’t and it still doesn’t make him very likable to me.
Unless I missed something, it wasn’t his father who caused that Dead Apostle/zombie rampage, but Shirley. Of course you could argue that it would have led that sooner or later.
As Natalia said, a shitty reason to kill your father.
Although I didn’t know anything about this episode, it was obvious that Shirley would die. Considering who wrote the novels I expected the worst, e.g. her being crucified, raped etc.
So all in all this episode wasn’t as horrible as I expected. π

Character recycling at its best.
@Nick J: OMG
@Nick J: Is that Gilgamesh?
And btw I’m curious to see how Shirley had turned out. Did she escape from the island? Or was she killed?
jindo90 : killed of course. She was the same as the other Dead apostle on the island : mindless hunting anything alive.
Moreover, vampires can’t swim
Anyway, really good episode. The ED is really amazing.
wow… screenshot of the year ^^
A beautiful episode π Kiritsugu is my fav char and this is just epic! EPIIIIC!
@Mitusbishi: Ah I see, well in that case it’s ok, forgive me for not getting it.
@Boingman: Kiri’s dear dad was going to use the Dead Apostle formula on humans at some point, that was the reason he chose an island so far away from The Church and the Magic Association to begin with. Shirley just happened to stumble on the formula first and took it thinking it was merely a formula for stopping or almost stopping the internal clock of a person and she wanted to prove his research was safe (it wasn’t). Mind you, she wasn’t entirely false on her assumption as the Emiya family’s specialization dealt with time manipulation (the magic abilities Kiritsugu used against Kayneth are specialized sorcery of the Emiya crest).
Also, there’s only one Dead Apostle in that island as far as we can tell (Shirley) and the rest are just a bunch of The Dead, aka familiars of the Dead Apostle.
@Leon-Gun: I assumed that the formula she took was the same that they had used on those flowers. Is that wrong?
Isn’t it sad, Shirley.
@jindo90 I’m sure the prods just decided to slack off and sorta alter an existing character design for minor, non-important characters. But come on. The Natalia/Gilgamesh resemblance is uncanny. After some nice Photoshopping one can hardly distinguish it from the real Gilgamesh.
… Anyone else notice Kiritsugu killing his father with a Tokarev TT-33?
http://world.guns.ru/userfiles/images/handguns/russia/hg20/1287754687.jpg
Love this pistol!
@Someguy
Indeed. Is the TT1938 a double-action or a single-action like the Makarov?
@Balance and Greyweather
Yes, I know that there actually is a Tsukihime anime. It’s just that it’s not really that good, and so (as Kondou has exemplified) a lot of Type-Moon fandom refuses to acknowledge its existence.
@TheWonko: I wasn’t aware of the “meme” so my apologies. Though I was going to say that it really was bad. As you can tell, I don’t keep up with things like this ahaha.
Anyway, it was really interesting to see several different references being tied in with this episode.
Kiritsugu’s papa was NOT going to use the formula on people. He had already deemed it an ineffective solution. It just so happens that a solitary island in the middle of nowhere somewhere in Asia is a good place to hide from the mage’s association.
“Thanks for the episode, but is this past of Kiritsugu supposed to make me sympathize with him? Because it didnβt and it still doesnβt make him very likable to me.
Unless I missed something, it wasnβt his father who caused that Dead Apostle/zombie rampage, but Shirley. Of course you could argue that it would have led that sooner or later.
As Natalia said, a shitty reason to kill your father.”
Exactly. Kiritsugu is a d*ck who never puts and effort when it comes to saving people. He is the complete opposite of Shirou. Instead of trying to believe in people and finding a way to save them, he kills them off when there is a possibility of them being a threat. Instead of facing the threat itself and believe in others and himself he always chooses the back-door and the easier option of just disposing the problem, whoever be the cause or whoever dies in the process. But i think the guys who did not read the novel will understand what i’m saying after next weeks episode.
My point is, even tough he is right about war, and how horrible the world can be, but he actually never tries to help(i mean without sacrificing others), he is just killing people for a small gain, even if there is a possibility to save more people with more effort. I myself think that he long lost hat justice actually mean, he is just a cold hearted killing machine, no better that the people who he tries saving the world from, only he can’t realize it, neighter can Maya or Irisviel because they are manipulated by his words, and his rare shown kindness. He is just as an antihero than Gilgamesh.
^ Or maybe he already knew it wouln’t work and went with the most surefire way to save the most people as possible. It’s not that he doesn’t put effort into things, he just chooses the method with the most probability of working. And he does realize what he’s doing is wrong, which is why he wants the Holy Grail =P.
I’d’ve thunk that the extreme melancholic emotional breakdowns he has demonstrates Kerry’s humanity with how helpless he is in the face of making the call to kill a small number to save a greater number. Part of this hatred for magi in general could also have been built from the sheer sense of betrayal he got from his father, who he must’ve believed was setting out to really save the world based on the work with his flowers, and who inevitably caused the death of his first love – especially after she’d make the promise to stay with him forever(?) until he knows what he wants to do.
To me he’s more a case of EMIYA Archer who got his break at a much earlier age.
Kiritsugu knows he is a hypocrite and he himself is one of those heroes he hate. The very reason he needs the grail is to wish for a better world, knowing his current methods would not really lead to peace.
@nick j
that is not a watermelon, its a guava
there are lots of them here in the philippines ^^
holy moly, another delay? they’re going to drop it. :3
This episode added some tidbits here and there, but aside from that, it managed to stay true to the novel. Just like an adaptation should be. That aside, UTW and their signs will never fail to amaze me every time.
@asd
Thanks. Well that sure is one awesome-looking fruit.
@stupid long comment : you guys expecting too much from a kid at his age arent you?
haha, the island is reminds me of area around my hometown. and that mage is seems like cornelius alba. i wont surprised if one of the hooded executor is ciel…
its just like uroborochi for a seems like relaxed story into a crazy field full of insanity and madness driven situation in a second lol
the beggining of magus killer, the tale that drive him into despair..
I was wondering how they were going to find enough material to get a full second season. Thanks for the great episode.
Spoilery goodness:
Kerry’s dad was every bit as “evil” as Roa, Walachia, Zouken, or Souren. His aim was to make himself a Vampire in order to reach the Root, and it certainly sounds like he was fine with eating people to sustain immortality so long as he could control the when and where of it. The failure of this “immortality” drug wasn’t that it created Vampires but that it created Vampires with an uncontrollable blood lust. It sounds as if he had always intended on testing the drug on humans, most likely on Shirley.
Dad not only showed no remorse over destroying everything Kiritsugu loved, he showed no regret at all except disappointment that the drug he had been working on was never going to work (and he’d need to start fresh). Moreover, he made it clear that he wanted Kiritsugu to essentially become him by continuing his research when he became old enough. Kiritsugu had every reason to kill his father, though it being “Justice” was probably a later rationalization on his part.
@spweasel: basically yeah, the light novel outright states that Kiritsugu’s questions were meant to see if his father had regrets about his part or if he would do this once again somewhere else. He basically answered in the affirmative.Plus Kiritsugu loved Shirley, kids tend to be more about emotions than retionalization so at the moment he killed him because he was to blame for her situation. The rest is just post-event rationalization which leads him into what he became.
Wow…thanks Kiritsugu, you unleashed a mini-Zombie Apocalypse. But considering it was his dad’s research that led to this…I can definitely see how he became what he did.
Yeah look, seeing your childhood love turning into that kind of a creature, it does things to you.
I can’t remember exactly, but in the novel it seemed like Kiritsugu was somewhat manipulated or coerced into killing his father. For instance, Natalia gave him the pistol and encouraged him to do it, he didn’t do anything with a knife before shooting, and he cried more after it was all said and done.
To Natalia? At that point he was nothing more than a means to an end, a convenient way to kill her designated target in order to prevent secrets from leaking. She honestly felt bad for him, but at the same time she still purposefully used him like a tool and…well, that’s development for next episode, but I feel like if this one failed anywhere it was the ending scene; they made Kiritsugu appear more mature and Natalia appear somewhat less cold. Next episode should be great though, so long as they effectively show Kiritsugu gradually becoming more like Natalia.
haha more episodes, more devastating choices await for kiritsugu. next target, the almost-called mother
F/Z has been such a journey, to the extent I digged up my old DVD archive of FSN, watched it all, and now I’m watching FSN-UBW, again!
Thanks to UTW for the excellent translations. Nowadays there’s so much anime released, and because of time constraints I almost only watch the ones released by UTW.
Shirley reminds me a lot of Fujimura Taiga. Coincidence?
Nope. Kiritsugu befriended Taiga specifically because she resembled Shirley. Assistant Zero in the Einzbern consultation specials is also designed to show that young Taiga is basically palette-swapped Shirley.
I’m looking forward: http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=9042
To those who say that Daddy Emiya was a bad man:
Mixed feelings on this episode and the novel, in my case. In the novel, he showed some regret over what happened with Shirley, and even expressed affection towards Kiritsugu. The kid came off as cold in the novel, naturally. But the way ufotable portrayed his father, it was to the point of unforgiving and so that the viewers don’t get emotionally attached to the d*ckhead in any way. He was being a typical d*ck magus, that’s why it’s so easy to hate him in this ep. Some of the things he said don’t match up with what he was trying to say in the novel, and I remember feeling bad for him when Kiritsugu shot him in the back.
One saving grace for ufotable was that not only did Shirley not come off as stupidly naive as she did in the novel, but her moments on-screen as a sweet, earnest and bright girl really stayed with me. I guess it’s Urobuchi to blame for how short her scene at the chicken house was in the first place; he didn’t have a lot to say for her pain, but ufotable sure did. That poor girl.
