Here you go: the Carnival Phantasm Special Episode that came with the Type-Moon Festival BD Box. I will admit this is late, but I won’t apologize because you’re technically lucky to be getting this now and not half a year later given my ridiculous workload studying the healing arts!

Please note that these releases are 10-bit, unlike the original 12 episodes which were encoded in 8-bit. Not that it should matter at this point.

If I had to comment about this episode, it would be that I’m somewhat glad the “Date Everyone” route came out on top in the online poll.

I really don’t know when the batch for Carnival Phantasm will be ready, but you can expect some progress to be made during school breaks. As for how the Fate/Zero Season 2 BDs are coming, I’m halfway done with translating the final Einzbern special as of writing this post. The rest of the batch is as good as ready, so I’m hoping to throw it out mid-February.

Surprise double release for today! Here’s Carnival Phantasm episode 12 and the mini OVA included in the third volume, Fate/Prototype, for your enjoyment. This brings us to the end of the Carnival Phantasm project!

It’s been a long but very fulfilling ride through the three volumes of this series. Quite possibly the best gag parody series I’ve ever seen, I enjoyed watching every minute of it, and it has been so much pleasure to share this wonderful series with you all. It’s always sad to see a good series end, but that’s what makes the experience all the more valuable. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

I suppose it was pretty interesting to watch this small Fate/Prototype digest and see how the concepts in it eventually matured to those present in the Fate/Stay Night game. The middle section, put simply, was a TL nightmare, replete with contextless Nasu(TM) dialogue all overlapping one another (up to four voices talking simultaneously). After some analysis, thought, and mix-and-matching, I’m hopeful I did the translations justice.

And… the curtain call!

It’s always a challenge to translate comedy so that the jokes come through in English, but this series took it to the next level by parodying the massive TypeMoon universe (meaning I really needed to do my homework), as well as making references everywhere to all sorts of series and movies, which meant each line had to be approached with extreme care. I gave each episode everything I had because they deserved nothing less, and I’m very, very glad all of you seemed to enjoy the end result a great deal.

I really have to give it to my friend ar here for the insane quality of his typesetting. His signs made my jaw drop in awe many, many times in the course of working on this series, and it all came from hours and hours of hard work and an insistence on perfection. Thanks also go to the other staff who gladly chipped in their free time to make these subs possible. And of course, my deepest appreciation goes to Eri Takenashi and the geniuses at Lerche labs for coming up with these jokes. Rarely have I laughed so hard in my life!

Where to begin… This project was a hell of a lot of fun and each episode made me laugh continuously, with some being particularly funnier than others, but all of them were great as a whole. Everytime a new volume (Season) came out I knew it would be hell to work on, but completing each episode felt great. I knew that after all the hours of typesetting, being able to sit down and enjoy the episode would be bliss, and that it definitely was. My knowledge of the Nasuverse is fair I suppose, there’s a lot I don’t know and a lot that I’d love to know, and it seems like watching each of episode of this and then hassling Raze with questions paid off, as well as looking things up myself where I could. All in all, I would estimate a good ~250-300 hours were spent on typesetting this gem, which was practically all my free time whenever we were working on another season, but I had a blast working with Raze and the others on this, so it was time well spent. And while I was definitely burnt out after each episode, I would probably still do it again. Lerche did a wonderful job animating Carnival Phantasm for a new Studio, and I hope they continue to produce more high quality work in the future with more of this great typography work they’ve so far displayed. My hat goes off to them and to my bros who I spent hours working with on this series.

Carnival Phantasm has been the most fun I’ve had timing a series in a very long time, and I’m glad that I was able to work on it. Every episode was filled with laughs, and it was also hilarious to watch Bob64 and __ar work for hours on the whiteboard of doom (now with much more “doom” than iDOLM@STER’s!) Hope you all enjoyed the ride!

Thanks also go to Bob64 and fnord for assisting with the typesetting, Moshi for his very valuable input, and fgghjjkll for filling in for the timing of ep9.

Please enjoy the final episode of this incredible series, and thank you for flying UTW! A batch will hopefully be released sometime soon.

I’m pretty mad at myself for overlooking a recurring South Park reference until someone pointed it out in the comments for ep10. I’m not even sure why I never managed to make the connection after so many episodes, considering that I used to follow South Park (in English) so religiously. Sorry about that, and the affected episodes will be fixed in the batch.

Anyway, here’s FINAL DEAD LANCER, with 100% more “You bastards!”. Please do enjoy.

Fans of Kohaku and her trolling will love this episode. We also have delicious Akiha and a pretty random Hisui section.

EDIT: It occurred to me that most of you probably don’t know the details behind Hisui’s “Brainwash Detective” persona, so here’s how it came about:

Show »

Nasu apparently made a lot of typos with Hisui’s lines in a minigame that was in the pre-release version of the Tsukihime visual novel. Among them is a typo where Hisui, as a detective, declares “犯人を、貴方です” (“I’ll make you the culprit”; the “wo” is supposed to be “wa” instead, which would make the line mean “You’re the culprit”). The joke is that the typo makes it look like Hisui is declaring to turn the person into the culprit, instead of declaring the person to be the culprit.

While these typos didn’t make it to the final version of Tsukihime, Type Moon later posted a pretty awesome optical illusion pic featuring the personality Brainwash Detective Hisui, whose catchphrase is “貴方を犯人です” (a slightly reworded version of the relevant line that means the same thing). 2ch loved it, of course, and the phrase has become a famous meme ever since.

This typo-meme also came up in ep2 of Carnival Phantasm. See if you can find it! ^_^

Yeah, I know we took our time on this, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. I’m particularly pleased with how the script turned out this time, and of course the typesetting from ar is always amazing.

The premise of a Holy Grail Grand Prix is funny enough already, but the episode itself is simply out of this world. Really, really good stuff.

Please enjoy! I doubt we can get the next episode out soon because my schedule’s packed to the brim this week, so please bear with us.

Carnival Phantasm – EX Season

Too much awesome in this episode. While each section was hilarious in their own right, my personal favorite was Five Ren Cats.

A little tidbit worth mentioning here so you guys get the joke at the last section. The letter H (ecchi, or エッチ) pretty much means sex in Japanese by default. I chose not to include this in a TL note in the episode because the term should be quite familiar to any seasoned anime viewer.

Encoders Note:

Show »

This h.264 release is 10-bit, so update your codecs/etc. if necessary or if you haven’t already done so.

The reason this is in 10-bit while the other episodes aren’t is simple; every one of you should be able to watch softsubbed 10-bit 480p regardless of what CPU you have. If for some reason you can’t or refuse to get 10-bit working, the resolution of the XviD release is only slightly lower than the h.264 release, which replaces any need for an 8-bit h.264 480p release.

Now onto why we haven’t re-released the Blu-ray episodes in 10-bit: a fair amount of people won’t be able to render the heavy typesetting with 10-bit 1080p in realtime. We’ve already had to tone down some of the typesetting for the Blu-ray releases, and it wouldn’t be worth it to tone it down any further just so it can play back reasonably in 10-bit video.
