O.o That fight is the most retardedly awesome thing I’ve seen all year.
Berserker confirmed as the missing fifth Pillar Man. (He even has a dubstep theme!)
Also, because it bears repeating: Thank you for doing this show. UTW is the only group I trust for my Type-MOON anime fix. Even if you’re simply adjusting official subs, the quality and attention to detail you bring to every show you work on is what lets you guys stand at the top of this game.
And if you guys are fully retired by the time the BD’s of this show come out, I may cry. (To say nothing of potential future adaptations – who wants to see an ufotable version of Notes or Tsukihime?)
Never thought I’d say this but I prefer Commie subs. You guys over do localization and change the wording around too much. Commie keeps it literal and accurate to the exact words.
Thanks again for the recently released episodes. Your effort is appreciated. I have a translation related question. In Aniplex’s subs, Saber says: “Thank you for saving me from that, but would you mind unhanding me?”
You, however, have translated that line as: “Thank you for your quick thinking, but would you mind unhanding me? ”
To my knowledge, Aniplex’s translation got it right. So, why did you change it?
That was my change. “Thank you for saving me from that” sounds awkward and clunky, so I ran an alternative past the TLC, and he was okay with it.
Geng, if you don’t like it, nobody’s forcing you to stay. I can assure you however that the translation of every episode is scrutinized to an absurd degree and many actual TL fixes are made. I very much doubt there is a release out there that is more accurate than this one.
Fair enough.
Now going back to the line Fate/fan mentioned, Commie subbed it as “but would you mind unhanding me now?” where as you guys did not include the word “now”. Can you clarify whether or not she says “now”?
Thanks for replying Xythar. To be honest I don’t know if Saber’s line sounds awkward and clunky. Changing it to this however comes of as Saber approving Shirou’s course of action (jumping in himself to save her) which is not the case. As was mentioned in episode 4, Saber wants Shirou to refrain from putting himself in danger. It endangers their chances of winning the Holly Grail and having Saber’s wish granted. Localising that line as such does more harm than good. Please keep this in mind for the batch release.
I don’t really see the difference you outline between the two options. They’re both thanking him for what he did, which is recognizing Archer’s attack fast enough to lead her to safety. Mine just goes into more detail (which is something I find is often necessary when editing as vague or contextless statements that sound fine in Japanese often require context and detail to be added to work in English).
@Geng: I don’t really see the difference with or without the “now”, either. It’s fairly clear that she’s not asking him to let go sometime next week.
Also, I should probably add that the “thanking” part isn’t the focus of the line in the first place. She’s basically just politely asking him to let her hand go, like “I appreciate it, but could you let go, please?”
I asked around and someone confirmed she says sorosoro which means now, soon, etc.
To me it does make a difference, as adding the word “now” makes Saber seem slightly more adamant on Shirou unhanding her.
It’s not supposed to be adamant. She’s asking politely, and sorosoro is a polite turn of phrase.
That being said, I don’t think the lines differ enough to matter. Focus on the Rin/Ilya fight and following section if you want to see actual translation discrepancies that make a difference.
Saber is thanking Shirou for the act of saving her from Archer’s attack, not for the particular method he chose to do so. There are two choices regarding Shirou’s action in the visual novel. He either “calls back” or “brings back” Saber.
If Shirou had chosen to only use his voice and call her back, there would have been no problem with your translation. However, Shirou brings back Saber himself, which results in him getting injured, and putting his life in danger. Hence we get the extra scene where Saber confronts Shirou about the choice he made.
Considering you left “onii-chan” untranslated to preserve the context behind it. I don’t see how you can’t have a problem with keeping “thank your for your quick thinking…” when Saber clearly has a problem with how Shirou saved her. That line and Saber’s action in episode 4 contradict each other.
“Quick thinking” has nothing to do with the actual method he used to save her. It simply means he acted without delay.
The Japanese line also makes no reference to the method he used and would apply equally well to either situation (whether you call someone back or drag them away yourself, you’re still “saving” them either way). It’s not like the line was “thank you for pulling me away, but…”
Sorry, but I’m not seeing the problem here.
Sigh. I’ll try to use a different wording then. Saber sounds like she condones Shirou’s “quick thinking” when in fact she is just being thankful for saving her, period. In both cases she is “thankful for saving” her from Archer’s attack but we know from the portrayal of her character that she doesn’t approve of Shirou’s method. It is literary the same thing with “onii-chan” in episode 1.
Onii-chan normally translates to “mister” if it’s used when greeting a stranger but since Ilya uses it to address her step-brother it can simultaneously mean “little brother” as well. Shirou thinks it’s the former but Iya uses with the later meaning. The Japanese line itself does not say to us which one is it. Having knowledge of the context it’s used in however a translator can make a more conscious choice on how to handle it.
Saber literary thanks Shirou for preventing Archer’s attack to harm her (she is not just being polite so Shirou lets go of her hand). That remains the same for either choice you made regarding how you handled the situation. Be it calling or dragging her.
Now comes the next episode and Saber has a talk with Shirou regarding his way of acting during that moment. Keeping “thank your for your quick thinking…” means that she had a change of mind the next day, when in fact nothing of the sort happened. She makes it apparent that she would not approve Shirou’s thinking of placing himself in danger, who consequently jeopardises her chances of getting the Holy Grail and fulfilling her wish.
To dumb it down even further. Say you have a line you have to translate from the preview. The Japanese, as a language, can be vague as who the subject in question can be or to whom the line is referring to. That can significantly influence the translation and wording of that line. Being equipped with knowledge and context from the source material though you can overcome the language barrier and translate it the same for both the preview and the coming episode. The keyword here is context.
>Saber literary thanks Shirou for preventing Archer’s attack to harm her (she is not just being polite so Shirou lets go of her hand).
What, with “kansha shimasu ga”? I find that a little hard to believe. An even more literal translation would be something like “While I appreciate your saving me…”
Yes, both the TLC and I are fully aware of the context.
I think you’re misunderstanding what “thank you for your quick thinking” means. It doesn’t have anything to do with approving someone’s rationale or reason for doing something. It just means “thank you for acting swiftly”. I’ve already edited episode 4 and I am quite certain that there is no inconsistency created there.
Thank you for your feedback, but I think we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one.
“While I appreciate your saving me…” sounds good to be honest and I think it works better. I am well aware what “thank you for acting swiftly” means as I am well aware that Saber would not leave Shirou’s action uncriticized. Heck, in the visual novel she immediately complains about it the moment Shirou jumps in.
In the end you provided the solution to this argument yourself. What do you think of using “While I appreciate your saving me…” instead? It carries the same meaning and gets across the same point. Sorry if I came out as an annoyance. I was just making some constructive criticism, I did not mean to offend you (if I did) or anything.
PS: Shirou’s “thinking” of putting himself in danger in order to save her, is something Saber would not be “thankful” so early in their relationship. Hence where my disagreement originated from. Sorry if I did not make it clear from the beginning…
No, I get that, it’s just that:
>Shirou’s “thinking” of putting himself in danger in order to save her, is something Saber would not be “thankful” so early in their relationship.
isn’t what “thank you for your quick thinking” means. I feel like you’re trying to attach extra meaning to the statement that isn’t there.
I’ll consider the alternate line for the batch/BDs because it isn’t really a big deal to me either way, but I do feel like we’re misunderstanding each other.
As someone who hasnt watched the episode (yet).
I think fate/fan is trying to say that what Saber says holds a second/not clarified meaning, with the fact that she does in general disapprove of Shirou’s proactive way of intervening with the fights. “Thank you for saving me from that,” and “Thank you for your quick thinking” are both true to the fact that Saber is grateful who what Shirou did, but the latter doesnt include her overall dislike of Shirou’s interactions.
The former holds a meaning of “will”, while the latter holds a meaning of “reaction”
Just my two cents
Thanks for considering it Xythar. I think topazz’s comment above expresses my point better.
By your own admission, Xythar, you changed the original sentence to “thank you for your quick thinking…” because it sounded awkward and clunky so you added context and detail to make it work in English. Isn’t that considered as attaching extra meaning? Perhaps the original sentence came off as sounding too dry but it could also be “thank you for your swift decision” and still face the same issues.
Saber is critical of Shirou’s course of action. If she were to refer to it (she doesn’t in this statement) she would be negative. The absence of negative criticism looks like praise or approval. She only conveyed a polite expression of gratitude coupled with some slight annoyance for the end result. Which is why “while I appreciate your saving me…” fits here.
By the way, I know that both “I appreciate your saving me” and “I appreciate you saving me” have seen use but shouldn’t the later be considered the proper syntax?
It’s not attaching extra meaning if it’s consistent with the facts (or at least, it’s not attaching meaning that shouldn’t be there). Obviously, this is up to the translator’s discretion, but it’s not possible to translate Japanese without adding any context at all.
I’m going to say it again: the line as it stands is fine, both as a translation of the Japanese and from an overall logic point of view. If you disagree, that’s fine, but I’ve seen nothing that convinces me otherwise unless you read meaning into the line that isn’t there. That’s my opinion as an experienced, native-English-speaking editor, and it is backed up by the approval of an experienced TLC fluent in Japanese.
Regarding the use of “your”: http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/education/grammar/should-it-be-you-or-your-gerunds
Saber would use the proper form, I believe.
Wow..so many comments on that one line. Well, here’s my version straight from the Japanese:
“Master, thank you for the assistance (back there). But isn’t it about time you let go?”
We are all so good at listening to the Japanese dialogue, we notice them way too well. It’s never possible to perfectly translate a language into a different language, so there will always be discrepancies. The way you prefer a phrase is solely based on your association with that phrase, and everyone is different. Which one’s subs is better? Aniplex or UTW? UTW wins my vote this time.
But I still prefer my own interpretation when needed.^o^
PS. Thank you UTW for your work, you have my respect for UTW-ing UBW.
PS2. Interesting discussion.
Of course there isnt a single “correct” translation. Even in the English languague self, you can use multiple sentences and they basicly all mean the same thing, not even considering you have to TRANSLATE Japanese to English, which even makes room for more interpretations. Tbh, I dont care much about reaching the perfect sentences, as long it conveys what is meant. There are multiple ways to interpretate and translate things and in the end, they all mean the same thing.
Your work is greatly apprciated, without you we couldnt watch UBW they way its supposed to be watched.
The obvious answer to everyone who constantly asks when the next ep is, “when it’s done.” Patience seems to be a virtue that is steadily declining as the years go by.
@kokujin-kun
Sorry, I mixed up the terms onii-chan and otouto in my head. Otouto means little brother while onii-chan means older. No need to be rude. Funny that you were the only person who caught that though.
Just asking to clarify something but isn’t it “Illyasviel” and not “Ilyasviel”. But anyway Thanks for the really2x Awesome release UTW just can’t watch it unless it is translated by you guys.
Both ways exist. I don’t really care which one is used, though it’s at least a bit strange to write her name with one “L” in Prisma Illya, since the official title is written with two “L”s.
I also have a question (or two). If Saber’s name is ever mentioned, will it be “Artoria”, “Altria” or “Arturia”? I personally was never a fan of mirror-moon’s “Arturia” and “Altria” sounds like a failed romanization in my opinion. I think Artoria (http://i.imgur.com/gt7ioOe.jpg) is her correct name.
Second question, when the UBW chants will be used (I’ll guess we’ll hear both the Japanese and the English ones), will you use ruby text or just use the Japanese version when the Japanese one is spoken and the English version when the English one is spoken?
Raze already used Arturia in F/Z, so that’s what I’ll be sticking with. It’s the only one that makes sense to me given her origin, anyway.
Regarding the chants, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
hah and i thought you guys were retiring from the subbing scene
i’m guessing this is one last project you guys are undertaking before you call it quits? Pretty symbolic show to finish before quitting if i might say so myself 😛
thanks again you guys are awesome
“Saber pronounces it “Arturia” HERSELF in Fate/Zero. You can’t get any more clear cut than that. #dealwithit”
Now that’s a big fail on your part. Her name is pronounced アルトリア (Arutoria). It’s fine if they keep it Arturia, as much as I hate it, but you should have better arguments if you’re trying to diss me.
^Bigger fail on your part. Japanese language does not have a character for TU nor do they pronounce it. They default to TO for all sounds that should end as TU or ends with a T.
“Japanese language does not have a character for TU nor do they pronounce it. ”
Of course they can in katakana, so that’s another fail on your part. Japanese don’t usually have “ti” either, but they can still say ティーパーティー, Tea Party. “Tu” is トゥ. If Nasu wanted it to be Arturia, he would have written アルトゥリア. “Arturia” is a fan romanization. The official ones are Altria and Artoria. It was mirror-moon who decided to change it into Arturia.
As for Artorius, read Saber’s original description in the status screen. The legend Nasu used is a culmination of several legends, using the theory that King Arthur supposedly derived from Artorius. Don’t think I am too dumb to differentiate between Lucius Artorius and King Arthur.
Definition of agglutination: a reaction in which particles (as red blood cells or bacteria) suspended in a liquid collect into clumps and which occurs especially as a serological response to a specific antibody
…RIght… Throwing out fancy words to seem intelligent backfired completely there. But still wrong in context.
The source of King Arthur may have been claimed to be derived from the Roman general. That is true in our world but not in the Nasuverse. By actually owning Excailbur and Avalon, the heroic spirit behind Saber proved to have been a real living person. Therefore, the same theory of Dux Bellorum exist reverse as it’ll be the other way around where the Roman general would be a derivative of the person known as King Arthur in a world where magecraft is hidden from public eyes.
That settled, トゥ is not a katakana character. It is an extended katakana script. I don’t know about you but the game is made back in 2004 and extended katakana scripts are a relatively new addition to the Japanese writing system and is still being add on to. I don’t know when they adopted which script nor do I want to spend time finding it out but even today people still use both バイオリン or ヴァイオリン so it’s a matter of personal preference.
Guys, please.
I already confirmed I’ll be using Arturia for consistency so there’s really no need to argue about which it is meant to be.
Also, agglutination is also a linguistic term, but I think “amalgamation” was meant here.
I know probably no one cares at this point, but I’ll put my two cents on the issue.
1) I think Fate/fan is right that “quick thinking” implies that Saber condones the “thinking” part of Shirou putting himself in danger, or at the very least doesn’t mind. The “While I appreciate your saving me…” is definitely a better alternative. I will also maintain that having Saber not complain immediately is an error on Ufotable’s part, by the way.
2) While the sorosoro is lost in UBW’s translation, which I don’t thing is entirely correct, Commie’s use of “now” is definitely wrong, because it sounds clunky. A more proper translation would be “would you mind unhanding me _already_?”
3) On the little brother/big brother thing, I think Fate/fan was actually correct again. Oniichan means older brother of course, but if I remember correctly, Illya either is or considers herself to be the older “sibling” (I don’t remember where this is said, but doing the math they’re close to the same age at least and the wiki supports me), and uses Onii-chan ironically when addressing Shirou. So yeah, she technically uses Oniichan for little brother, kind of.
“Now that’s a big fail on your part. Her name is pronounced アルトリア (Arutoria). It’s fine if they keep it Arturia, as much as I hate it, but you should have better arguments if you’re trying to diss me.”
Fail reading comprehension. We all know her various alternate names and pronunciations. All I said in my post, which you purposely dodged, is that Saber herself pronounces her name as “Arturia” (not Arutoria) in Fate/Zero. That fact alone should end this retarded topic that no one but yourself cares about. Try not to dodge this time.
It’s Arturia, if Saber is indeed based on Arthur Pendragon.
How do I know it’s Arturia and not Artoria? Because Thomas Malory named our hero “Artur” in Le Morte d’Arthur. So adding that -ia to the end can’t possibly give you Artoria.
I understand preferences and I understand consistency, that’s why I already told Xythar that it’s fine if they keep it Arturia.
But this:
“All I said in my post, which you purposely dodged, is that Saber herself pronounces her name as “Arturia” (not Arutoria) in Fate/Zero”
Is just a lie you keep saying. If you are talking about episode 23, then try to clean your ears and listen again, because she didn’t say Arturia, so stop saying that. Iri in episode 2 also says Artoria and the few times her name is said in the VN, it’s also called Artoria. They may sound similar, but that argument of yours is invalid.
“How do I know it’s Arturia and not Artoria? Because Thomas Malory named our hero “Artur” in Le Morte d’Arthur. So adding that -ia to the end can’t possibly give you Artoria.”
Her true name wouldn’t be “female version of whatever my time and place calls King Arthur”, it would be what the people who knew her before she became king would have called her. Nasu said in Complete Material 3 that her name is based on the Roman name Artorius, using its feminine form. Nasu went with the interpretation that King Arthur was based on Artorius.
Either way, it doesn’t matter anyway, so I have no intention to discuss this any further.
@Anon
Part of the reason I mixed up onii-chan was because I was thinking what you wrote on the third paragraph. Another one can be contributed to me being sleepy and tired.
@Synced
People often hear what they want to hear not what is actually said
So yeah, your personal preference caused you this topic that should not have started in the first place
(y) Arturia likes this
Sometimes making a small change to an authors original work is very justified. Also official is not always better then fan-made in terms of editing. Official just means they have copyrights/licenses to the work. They are also bogged down by marketing / the network / media laws. To top it all off may not even be all that interested in the work itself. It’s just a small part of the job to them. Arturia > Artoria > anything starting with “Alt”
People often hear what they want to hear not what is actually said
And you know, the speaker may talk with a dialect. Hell just ask a Brit and an American to pronounce the same word. That’s still within the English spectrum. If we move on to Japanese pronunciation of English(esque) words then it degrades to “I heard this. They said that. Dictionary says so except this one say otherwise”
Geez I’m amazed at the depths some people will go to for ONE WORD. If you hate it that much open the subs file and edit it yourself! Hell you can even release an edited version of the subs to the community if you think it makes that much of a difference.
Just my two cents.
#Arturia
Yes, I’m talking about ep 23. I listened again and she clearly pronounced it with an “u” rather than “o”. Are-two-ria. Not even being biased since I don’t care about this nearly as much as you do. Your dissatisfaction of the use of Arturia is making you unable to hear the truth.
@ITSARTURIA
Sorry man, but no. She definitely says Arutoria in that episode.
I also believe Arturia is better than Artoria, but you can’t just deny reality like that.
Again, pronounciation is not a valid argument here. You can argue you like Arturia more, or it fits in your opinion better to King Arthur or for consistency’s sake or whatever, but every time her name is ever written or said, it’s Arutoria. Ayako Kawasumi doesn’t get a script where it says アルトリア and then she pronounces it Arturia, that’s simply illogical.
Wow, why do people try to complain when they obviously lack proficiency in the jp language (and probably even english)? I see absolutely no issues with Saber’s line. UTW’s line sounds more fluent and natural without changing the meaning.
The aniplex version has some atrocious TL errors (kind of a joke, considering we’re talking about translators who get paid for what they do…) and utw did well fixing them. There is one tl error that wasn’t fixed though.
Rin’s line after attacking Illya (一歩遠い) which was translated to something like “She’s just out of range” has nothing to do with range. She means to say that Illya’s familiars are an unforeseen obstacle she didn’t reckon in. She was “one step short”. “Didn’t go as planned, huh.”, or “Concealed familiars?” would be ways to get that nuance across. Basically just a question of stylistic choice.
@Mikael
Technically, it’s a simple matter of stylistic choice. Call it Prana, Mana, Magical Energy/Power or whatever else fits. In the anime, it doesn’t make a difference. The reason mirrormoon used prana in the vn translation is that there is something somewhat different to 魔力 that is officially called “mana”, so there was a need to use a different term that doesn’t sound too clunky. Since there won’t be any detailed explanation of that level in the anime, using mana won’t become a problem.
However, I honestly don’t see the point of using mana since, as apparent by people’s reactions, it only serves to cause misunderstandings and confusion. It’s like going out of your way to change a term people were already used to for no reason whatsoever, which in fact reduces the tl quality since maximizing naturality and conformability is an inherent part of translation.
I think it was just called “magical energy” by mirror-moon, actually. Consistency aside, I don’t really like “prana” for the term because it just means life force without any kind of magical association. You’re basically using a suboptimal translation for a word that shows up 99.9% of the time so that you can use a slightly more faithful translation for another word that shows up 0.01% of the time.
I think people are much more likely to associate “mana” with magical energy than “prana” in any case.
The thing is that it technically IS life force in the nasuverse. Magical Circuits serve the purpose of converting “raw” life force into a usable state of life force and the latter is then called prana while the former is named od. The raw form of life energy you find in the atmosphere (representing the idea of the planet’s life force) is called mana. Since mana and od are official namings, translating 魔力 as mana is also prone to future consistency issues, which will confuse people even more.
I’m not complaining about translating 魔力 as mana in general, it’s just that the given background of this piece of work make it an arguably suboptimal choice.
They’re only “official” namings as much as “maryoku” is or whatever. I have a list of terms I got from __ar and Raze which specifies that they should be referred to as “external mana” and “internal mana” if they ever come up, though I assume they won’t.
And yeah, it can be considered life force in the Nasuverse (they say as much in ep5) but the name itself doesn’t suggest anything beyond magical power/energy. In any case, the terminology comes from above, so it’s what I’m gonna stick with.
I suppose my wording lacked complementary information to properly get across what I meant. Yes, “od” is the same as “maryoku”, it’s fine to change it around however you deem fit. “Mana” is slightly different though in that it’s a commonly known and understood term. People will hear the characters say “mana”, thus it’s granted that a certain inner discrepancy is going to be caused when it is replaced by a different term in the translation.
The circumvention you projected is really good as long as we only talk about mana and od. Personally, I’d also use inner/outer mana for these two. However, throw “maryoku” into the mix and things get awry. First off, the term “outer mana” would imply that it’s the same as “mana”, just outside, which is plain out wrong, creating a fundamental misconception. Secondly, while you can distinguish between the concepts of outer and inner mana, how the heck is an amateur watcher supposed to get that “inner mana” and “mana” is something entirely different? The very concept of “maryoku”/mana already implies that it’s some sort of magical energy that inherents in magi, thus it’s by default “inner”, creating confusion and misleading people.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to insist that “prana” is the way to go, I only state that the terminology you denoted lacks a proper level of distinguishment between the raw types and the refined type. If you want to stick with “mana”, it’d be wiser to simply go with “life force” for od and “natural energy” for mana.
Also, note that I’m by no means trying to make a mountain out of a dust speck here, this is just some little nitpicking on an otherwise perfectly solid release. Your effort is greatly appreciated.
@mnmega
I’m still waiting for SYD Bleep; patience they say brings to the wise everything of worth. Further on that point, fools and the wise are only separated by the formers knowing indeed how foolish they are; while the latter delude themselves into believing they posses great knowledge. As such, this fool will gladly have faith in SYD Bleep getting a UTW or equivalent quality release. Then say a true God demanding men’s equipment be mutilated. Why not toenails, those things have a higher chance of going ingrown, Eh faggod?
>SYD
Tell me about it. I’ve had the HS version of the missing episodes downloaded for ages but I still believe UTW will release them so I haven’t watched them.
I haven’t watched a single episode of s2 yet. My faith will die long after entropy / the big rip / space raptor Jesus claims this sorry SYD(less) universe.
John Smith,
Could you maybe, pretty please ask Haruhi to do something about it. Just you know hint that getting the universe blo…I mean SYD Bleep batch out might be a good idea.
Not gonna whine here or anything, but looking back (especially at episode’s 00 rant) I think that you should have just go for a BD release in the future rather than claim to pick up the series, be this either as speedsubbers or slowsubbers or whatever. There’s people that has been waiting for your releases (myself included) because of those claims, and at least in my case a sense of loyalty to the group. I have, after all, seen all Fate related subs since the UBW movie from your releases.
But I’m a weak leecher, couldn’t resist the temptation… and, you know? there’s not that much of a difference with other subs.
A few weeks is still less of a wait than a few months. I wasn’t intending for it to fall this far behind in the first place, but things don’t always work out the way we want them to, and while I’d love to catch up (and will do everything in my power to make that happen), it’s unfortunately out of my hands at the moment.
I think the changes made are pretty significant, eg: https://www.diffchecker.com/iupj0u8s
If I was satisfied with just releasing superficially edited CR subs, I would have banged out all the remaining episodes already.
Bear in mind that you guys watching week-to-week are not the only people who will be using these subs. A late release is only late until it’s released, but a release with careless TL errors will have them forever.
@Xythar:
Exactly! There are alternatives for people who can’t wait an extra month (or something), but for people who wait for batches/BDs (like me), polished subs like the ones you produce are a no-brainer!
Please tell me that when episodes are released that several will be released at once and not just episode 4. 🙁 I don’t really want to watch this show with any other subs than from you guys. I know I’m being a selfish asshole but I just wanted to check… x_x
Personally there is a HUEG difference between UTW and the other groups for me there is really only one option. Take your time orz wait for … all you want this show will be just as enjoyable late as it would be “on time”
Thanks to the staff whom have given quality releases consistently on a great many show as well as the proverbial flag ship.
REALLY…? Kidding aside… Understandable request though. Since, a certain other group’s delays on subbing the last two eps of EX is starting to get to me as well…
Still waiting for you guys no matter what
Also, just wondering, I know you have responsibilities and stuff to do in life and such, though what is making delays in releases? I don’t remember waiting for you this long for any release, other for quality ones.
One of you cant find time to do it so you don’t want to do their work? Fine with me, but if its like that and he is lazy bastard, put some pressure on him 😛 a bit, sometimes its needed to be pushy
Too bad… if it prolongs think of recruiting a backup xD
Keep on doing the good work :3
Also, if its not a secret, did you finish your work for the latest episode too? 😀
But we aren’t recruiting anymore. UTW is kinda ded. We’re just going with the staff we have still.
And uh, I’m not even sure where we are upto to be honest.
UTW should have trained up some new recruits! If UTW dies then fansubbing will truly be ded. Me waiting for these episodes is like the grief period for quality subs and I’ll be damned if I won’t cry some more.
Just kill off your damn pitiful subgroup already you normies. Your release delays have been awful for about 2 years now and you clearly don’t give a shit about the community anymore.
I find it hilarious and pathetic that there are still people out there waiting for the rest of the episodes to get subbed by this group just because they don’t like the other subs for making minor mistakes here and there.
@elmaton04
I find it hilarious and pathetic that there is a 10 year old whining about other people waiting. Good hard spanking is what brats these days need.

Commie’s release is by no means bad, but you should probably refrain from making statements you have no way of verifying. I wouldn’t even claim that there are no errors in our version, but we’ve certainly fixed a lot so far.
@fotc,
Thank you!
That was quite possibly the most crazy epic thing I have ever seen. Here I thought I’ve seen some pretty crazy and or epic things. Turned out I ain’t seen nothing yet.
Was like they took Guilty Crown and condensed it into it’s most WTF and #EPIC! form. Liquified it and poured it into an FLCL (god I wish they make a sequel) mold made out of pure Gurren Lagann. Then fuse it with high quality demon hentai (the best and rarest kind of hentai) with Hatsune Miku playing the epic female lead. Sprinkle in some Space Dandy and add in some God (that’s capital “g” god btw) quality cocaine. Roll it up in the paper of an otaku’s life and give it to you on a gold plate along with [insert famous person here] wearing a nekomimi holding a lighter for you!
Thanks again good sir!
I just don’t get why UTW still have A+ for this, timely releases are a major factor when awarding A+, herkz said this himself several times.
So if Commie version is just as good and they actually release episodes every week shouldn’t they get the A+?
You said that the translator was busy. Does this mean the rest of the work from the episodes like timing/typesetting etc are all done and you just need to wait for translation to release or you have to wait until the translator starts?
Everything’s done on my end (except for the latest episode). I’m not sure exactly how much is timed or typeset but to be honest neither of those jobs take very long for this show. It’s just going over the script with TLC that’s the killer because we have to look at it in-depth and come up with suitable revisions for a lot of lines.
>commie just as good
slap yourself anon. I’d rather watch raws without understanding anything at all than watch commie. Last things I watched by commie were Neptunia and KLK. NEVER AGAIN. NEVER AGAIN. I WISH COMMIE DIED.
I would however say “I, who belongs among the heavens” or “I, who belongs amongst the heavens”.
But meh, proper by the book English > it sounds cooler. Until the language evolves and books get re-written.
BTW Xythar or anyone in the know for that matter.
I’m normally very patient. My refusing to give up hope for an SYD Bleep by UTW release will attest to that.
But any word on what’s up with Vivid’s delay of Amagi Brilliant Park it’s the only thing I watch on a weekly basis this season. Sucks to not get a dose before T-day gets on all my grills…starting tomorrow. Any chance for a release tonight. Sorry for the super unrelated question.
GenerlisimoTsundere is right about belong/belongs. “[W]ho belong(s) among the heavens” is an appositive phrase and does not follow the same subject–predicate rules as the main clause.
Speaking of the main clause in that particular line, which is really a sentence fragment, it would be correct if he were to say “Me” rather “I” in context. Surely, one can see why it would be incorrect if someone said “You’re making me stand on the same ground as you? I?”
Wat the flying fuk. Ep 8 is tomorrow yet the last ep you guys got done is ep 3. There’s slow and then there’s half dead snails pace. Fuk is taking so long
@ uwotmate
Well MAYBE, just MAYBE, they have other and/or better things to do at the moment. Stop swearing and go perish in a corner if you think your life depends on this series. There are other groups releasing these episodes.
Besides, as far as I know, this group actually IS half dead, or at least pretty passive. I’m glad they picked this up, and I for one will wait a YEAR for them to finish so I can put their work in my archive.
Oh YEAH!! I! For one…! Can wait over a thousand years…! Even if I have to withstand stagnation to wait for this group’s release(s)!! Even if the series ain’t completed within my generation…! My next of kin and perhaps even their kin will be able to witness its completion…!
Wait… I don’t mean to compete! Ain’t even the issue here… Apologies for all that I said… But!!! I meant every word!
Ya’ hear!!
@MD
I agree with waiting for UTW, but I have to say I find it odd that the only other alternative you could think of when it comes to fansub groups for this show, is Horriblesubs…There are other fansub groups working on it you know…And they aren’t as great as UTW of course, but they are certainly better than Horriblesubs. Hatsuyuki and Commie for example.
LOL if you think I would actually wait for UTW. Even if they get them done the very same day I wouldn’t watch theirs, Commie is better. This goober Xythar likes to play around with words too much which results in inaccurate translations.
I just couldn’t help ridicule them for taking so long. More than 1 month behind. That’s some epic fail. Carry on waiting.
Quoting @ : ” Can wait over a thousand years… ”
Where have I seen that line before…? :
Meh… Perhaps read something similar somewhere before. And since December’s so very near now… Gotta start getting busy for the end ‘o this year…! (^^)y
lmao someone just said Commie is better than UTW? …….. Go back to their shitty ass translation and enjoy their butchered localized shit. GTFO.
Watching HS and waiting on UTW to be released. Looking forward to more Fate stuff from Type-Moon and ufotable.
>”This was a busy month and I couldn’t watch any anime, but at the very least by now UTW must have released a few more episodes of UBW. What a great way to start winter break.”
Well nope. Brb, crying.
The funniest thing about all of this is the clueless utw fanbois who refuse to watch from any other groups and are willing to wait an eternity for mediocre subs. You mad you’re being fed incorrect translations and you don’t even know it? LOL!
I’ll say it again, Commie > Utw. #staymad
“{\i1}Independent familiars with auto-homing capabilities.
{\i1}With the she’s generating mana at her size…
{\i1}She’s like some kind of mini Magus!”
Bullshit.
Get a TLC who actually know japanese.
This one clearly not.
Commie pls go.
I am the bone of UTW
Translation is my body and Timing is my blood
I have created over a thousand subs
Unknown to Death, Nor known to Life
Have withstood pain to create many subs
Yet, episode 4 will never be released
So as we all pray, unlimited blade works when?
Tis the season of delayed subs.
FFF is dragging on SAO2. Commie is dragging on Psycho Pass 2. And UTW is dragging on UBW AND SYD2.
The rise of Crunchyroll, Funimation etc really taking its toll on your perseverance, huh?
Based on past releases, UBW would rather focus on Cinderella Girls then pay anymore attention to UBW. If they can’t even do that, then it’s perhaps the beginning of the end of amateur fansubbing. Better to badger Crunchyroll and Funimation to get rid of their region blocking nonsense.
At least there’s still Horrible Subs as a short-term solution.
I remember when crunchy first hit the scene.
“This is a good thing”
“Fansubbing will cater just as it always has”
“Now the industry gets more money for the shows we love”
But I fear things have gone as I thought they would. One day soon we might well all be stuck with shitsubs with unsubbed OP/ED, or simple edits, with no alternatives. It’s a good thing that nigh-everything is now subbed, don’t get me wrong, but I think a few years ago the diversity and quality of subs may well have been as good as it will ever get. Things may go downhill from here. Unfortunately the camp of people who want speedy shitsubs is simply bigger than the group waiting on glorious, sensibly-localised, karaoke and fancy-detail subs. I mean fuck, Tri4’s Madoka subs were coloured based on the character speaking, which while I might not ask for as standard was the kind of tasteful detail I want in my archive and for rewatches. Slowsubs rule, slowishsubs rule, Crunchy a shit.
We all knew that streaming would kill fansubbing. It was pretty clear when Dattebayo got fed up with complaints and legal notices.
CR is shit but one day they might not be shit. Still a super shady company and there’s others that can compete.
I’ll always remember fansubs but people don’t get paid enough for this shit.
What’s the point of calling CR sub “shit” by fanboys, when everyone knows the truth?
Even Raze said that he is unable to significantly improve official subs.
Stop with that lying to yourselves.
UTW is EDITING Crunchy script, NOT translating script from scratch.
It clearly proves that they can pull off a better script alone.
Well, I’m looking forward to UTW’s death.
It will help CR getting bigger and bigger.
That’s what we really need.
Hello there,
It’s always sad to see you favourite fansubbing group die slowly, thanks for all your past awesome work.
About UBW, I noticed you said that few episodes are done but only one person is holding those back, is there a chance to get it done by someone else, such as one of your fanbase?
I was so looking forward to see UBW through you, and as it’s the sole anime I’m willing to see this season (maybe with Kiseijuu), I’ll end up with another group, cursing about their mistakes and how you would have done better.
So sad, but thanks.
“cursing about their mistakes and how you would have done better.”
Better, my ass.
They are nothing compared to Crunchyroll.
That’s why its silly edit, not original TL.
Just die already, you scumbags.
I think all that I need to do to point out how Aniplex’s scripts are somewhere slightly above acceptable is:
– That point in the subs where Archer was wearing white.
– “The Archer class really is made up of archers”
Not to mention that the lines that Kingu pointed out were in the Aniplex script.
It’s once a year, it’s Christmas time!
And it happens once a year.
It’s once a year, it’s Christmas time!
When we hear about how Christmas only comes
Once a year.
Welp, I waited. I guess I’ll be hopping over to shitty Commie since it looks like UTW died again and I’d like to watch UBW.
Hopefully you guys will resurrect again and finish UBW so there will be decent subs to archive.
>December 3, 2014 at 12:24 am
>December 4, 2014 at 12:14 am
>December 4, 2014 at 4:54 pm
i thought it was obvious but it looks like someone was dumb enough to fall for it
So guys,
which other group’s release do you suggest for this show?
I know none’s perfect, but maybe list one or two releases and the reason (such as “fidelity to japanese script”, “grammar”, etc)
Thanks.
@WannaSeeUBW:
Read the above comments, pretty much. Inb4 more Commie/HS fanbois fighting about which subs are shittier.
I’m more interested whether there is a chance for someone else to fill in for the TLC… And what proficiency level of Japanese would be required if there was.
@Maurox
I don’t quite fancy sifting through all the vitriol to find other sub groups, personally, so could ya perhaps give me what your first bet would be for good quality subs? Otherwise I’ll just shrug and go download the HorribleSubs stuff since that tends to be about average and watchable.
If you didn’t notice, I just posted the two main groups that sub this ATM.
Personally I don’t care for either of them though, since they can’t even get something as simple as “Wow, you really are an archer” right, instead making Rin sound like a complete retard. “People die if they’re killed” in the old TV series was one thing, but I don’t want this kind of crap soiling my T-M / Ufotable / Kalafina goodness.
What is paradoxical, is that in my pursue for the best experience possible, I denied myself of this show altogether for the moment :/
But srsly, UTW. If the guy can’t spare a few hours on saturday or sunday, I’d find someone else for the job. You’ve shot yourselves in the foot with this shit.
@Maurox
Eh, we haven’t really shot ourselves in the foot at all.
Our original plan was to simply get the scripts done for the blu-rays, this hasn’t changed. The only difference is we figured we try to get some eps out as we got them done rather than making people wait for the blu-rays. It hasn’t gone as quick as planned, such is life. The alternative was not releasing any eps at all while it aired on tv.
The UTW that released episodes consistently every week is long dead, and has been for over a year now. Hell I’d even go as far as saying that the UTW that speedsubbed was dead 2yrs ago or so.
Times change, commitments change, people fall in and out of interest, etc. The few of us left still find a little bit of fun in fansubbing these days, but nowhere near what we used to and as such have no desire to take on more staff.
Kinda hard to garner sympathy when your latest news entry is ‘Now, I know you’re all wondering what we’re doing– BUT WHO CARES HAHAHAHA MILKY HOLMES WOOO! FUCK Y’ALL! WEEEEE~!!’
Doesn’t exactly incline me towards going ‘well, I see your point of perspective’ all that very much.
@DRRR
. Tis our blog and anybody who can post is free to post whatever they like (as long as its not political bs).
Nobody here asked for sympathy anyway, so not sure where you got that idea from. I was just laying out the facts, which are as follows:
* The majority of the UBW staff are quite busy atm, Xythar is keeping up but the rest of us not so much.
* Releasing the broadcast version was something Xythar wanted to do because he thought people would be happy to have something before the blu-rays which we probably wont get out for a month or so after the boxset hits.
* UTW died as speedsubbers somewhere late 2012/early 2013.
* UTW were reborn as slowsubbers because speedsubbing is no longer fun and kinda a waste of time.
* We still release stuff because whatever we still release is what we want to work on or watch. That is our only reason left for still subbing stuff.
* Our remaining staff who are still active mostly either don’t find subbing to be that enjoyable anymore (times and the world change) or are simply busy with their day jobs (shocking truth! most of the remaining utw staff are oldfags or simply have jobs because working pays bills).
@Xythar
Because ‘your blog’ clearly means that the blog is exclusively ar’s and not representative of UTW as a whole, apparently. If you’re going to try and deflect a point, at least understand the point being deflected.
@ar
Perhaps sympathy was a poor choice of words. Let’s go with empathy then. For all the statements you make, it doesn’t change the fact that fotc’s post (there, Xythar, does singling it out quell your rustled jimmies?) leaves a bad taste in a lot of peoples’ mouths and paints a poor image.
But whatever, your initial statement belies any of your following remarks. Ultimately the point is: ‘it’s our blog shut up and deal with it’. Which is fine, but it makes everything else seem like a poor attempt at justifying it all. I’m done though. I won’t bother pursuing the matter.
Well, if you say that you will definitely finish this properly, it’s fine – I wasn’t even expecting Ufotable’s UBW to come out, so I can wait… I just wouldn’t want you guys dropping out of this, because I’ve seen a lot of communities giving up just like that, leaving many good projects unfinished.
Also, with the replacement I never thought about permanently taking in more staff, just a temporary stand-in until regular staff has more time. I just really want to see this project done by you guys, it would be a shame if you dropped it – so I only proposed temporary help in order to liven up the place.
so, um..ar, i am not exactly familiar with this anime translation scene, can you at least tell us (or just me) what the current situation is? Will you be doing the rest of the episdes anytime soon? Or have you abandoned it? I understand that you want to defend yourselves, but at least have some mercy for fans like me who are waiting for your releases..
@pramit They want to do the BD so they start early by looking at TV Series. When somehow it can be delivered early (like eps 0-3), they will post it. But wait for BD for sure
Hello ar,
Thanks for the update.
I do perfectly understand that someone’s commitment and joy can wither with time, but now, I really can’t understand why you don’t want to take new staff?
When a ship’s captain thinks of himself as too old to continue, he generally finds his successor and teaches him the ins and outs, so that his ship survives the upcoming generation. with a fresh and new staff
I do find the “if I die, my fansub group dies with me” idea a little bit … selfish. Excuse the rudeness.
I kinda agree with ExFan… guy who doesn’t have time for TV will have time for BD when it comes out. He will probably make it for it as you said it, though, why not make time for TV if that is the matter, when we are looking after it that much.
Also about new stuff, I agree too, yes you said it its too much work to teach new stuff when the group is dying though isn’t the legacy that stays with those worthy of UTW? :/
Seasons change, time passes by.
As the weeks become the months become the years.

@ExFan
The Captain of UTW was always Raze who was also our lead TL, and unfortunately he tried to find successors in the past and by the time he retired still did not have a successor. Translator recruiting is hard, and he only ever found a handful of TLs that he would work with, and none who wanted to deal with group politics/public. By the end he was just sick of fansubbing and wanted out, so that was that.
I’ve always been the Boatswain or perhaps the Chief Engineer. UTW has always pretty much run itself though, with Raze occasionally hiring people, or us just taking on friends from other groups who were interested in working on a project we were planning to do. I do technically “run” the group nowadays, but I don’t have any plans to keep it running either. If there’s still enough people around willing to sub a show, we’ll do just that, and if not well, it’s not like we aren’t already ded (lul).
@Swede
The guy who has no time for TV should still be able to get through the remaining eps in the next 4 months, he’s really busy with RL atm, and that’s just how it is. He barely even has time to chat on irc atm.
Yeah, Raze once held a recruitment drive to find a new translator for UTW that would be good enough to take the work off his shoulders. After however many applicants, he recruited one guy, and said guy stuck around for all of one season before he was lost to real life issues.
Recruiting is hard. Recruiting competent staff who are skilled enough to meet the group standard and dedicated enough to get their work done on the schedule people have come to expect and stick around long-term, for free, in this age of simulcasts is practically impossible. We’re extremely lucky we have anyone good enough to TLC this show at all.
I always enjoy your releases so will wait for the BD’s if I have to in order to watch it with your subs. Take your time and thanks for the subs!
Happy Holidays 🙂
You are no longer, since we do have Crunchy now.
Relicts of the past shall vanish.
Also, you all are honorless thieves.
Stealing effort of Crunchyroll’s translators… you don’t have a slightes clue of what does word “pride” mean, do you?
Just die already.
@Gary [SuckyTheCocky]
It’s not really a translation when the fucking studio(s) give you the damn script(s) to work of off. Even with that, Crunchy somehow manages to fail.Reverse miracle workers they are.
BTW, does the special hospital know you’re gone?
Nope, that’s what we call a translation.
Guesswork fansub stuff usually has poor quality.
Crunchy is mostly hated by fanboys, just like you.
Not like other people care.
I only wish you quick death, cuz we don’t need thieves.
Stealing official scripts just prove, how incompetent, random fags they are.
Die please.
^ On Crunchy’s payroll…confirmed!
No wonder they’re so incompetent, can’t even hire a half decent troll.
Would you like a matchbox to put that dick away in?
>I only wish you quick death
Don’t worry, Truth is immortal.
>Stealing official scripts
Keep on sucking MAFIAA’s dick and being a brain dead zombie reject. Hollywood needs idiots like you!
I’m not related to CR in any way, I just hate thieves.
It’s daylight robbery, no matter how you will look at it.
And official subs quality is better than enough.
We don’t need fansubbers these days, so it’s best for them to just die.
ATM fansubbing is like ancient Rome just before its end.
CR will gut you very soon, everyone knows this very well.
So just stop wasting people times and die.
Simple as it is.
Sad thing is; he doesn’t even understand that the shit he’s spewing is an opinion. One that’s not even backed by any facts or understanding for that matter. Stupid tool is stupid.
Thank you for your continuing to sub (slowly). I’m one of the fans that appreciates what you do and ZOMG gets that it comes on a “when we can basis”. Wish you all and your families & friends a very happy Xmas and new year!
Now lets have some fun baiting Gary Suck Cock. Any bets on who can make him lose that last shred English competency?
Gary, you are a tool, and a useless one at that.
I may chose to answer you more properly later, if only to make counter points to that retarded propaganda whose dick you suck so zealously.
Think about this : CR started in 06. Faggots have been born after Crunchy was started who can now watch and understand anime. Yet fansubbers…NOT DEAD.
And here you are with your faggotry eight years late to the party. Slow much. Or did it take you that long to shove that cable up your ass to get internets.
Thievery, ironic that you would complain about that. Seeing as your use of English robs it of credibility as a language. Hear that. That would be French, German,Italian, Spanish even Weeaboo(ese) all LOLing @ English because YOU ROBBED IT.
Really boy, WTF is this shit :
>You are no longer, since we do have Crunchy now. Stealing effort of Crunchyroll’s translators… you don’t have a slightes clue of what does word “pride” mean, do you? <-(You have stolen the lives of many of my brain cells TO DEATH WITH YOU)
STOP STEALING ENGLISH. YOU THIEVING GRANDFATHERFUCKING FAGGOT!
And do tell your mother; next time she's in heat. Use contraception before opening her legs to any blind mutt that she sees walking past her.
Now stop stealing the Earth's air, you damn inbred thief.
Mother, sucking cocks etc.
Srsly, how old are you?
Seems like most of UTW’s fans are under ~15.
There is no need to offend people in so primitive way.
Also, believing in “translation errors” coming from fansubbers mouths is just silly.
They have proven their incompetency so many times.
Oh well… you can still be a fanboy.
It’s free for all (lolz).
But it’s not like ~90% of people care about fansubs.
Even Raze knows this.
Therefore he isn’t here anymore.
Dude, this self-delusion is just hilarious.
You are no longer needed, so die.
Using anything other then “dick” insults in a conversation with you is just casting pearls before swine.
>Also, believing in “translation errors” coming from fansubbers mouths is just silly.
What language is that? Do you even ENGLISH motherfucker.
On that point, how would you know? Obviously you don’t know English. Assuming you know Japanese, which I doubt, you still wouldn’t be able to judge a translation.
FACT : CR’s translations are awful. Prove me otherwise with real facts not your shit taste opinion. Saying “Official” proves nothing. So go on show me those “translation errors” you like to mouth off about so much.
>But it’s not like ~90% of people care about fansubs.
Your source for this information, please? Protip: pulling numbers outta your ass proves your own stupidity.
>Even Raze knows this.
>Therefore he isn’t here anymore.
So you think people should fansub for life or not at all? He subbed like a boss and retired, nothing wrong with that.
>Dude, this self-delusion is just hilarious.
No, that would be you. Srsly go look in a mirror.
>You are no longer needed, so die.
Worst case scenario :
You’re right. But you were NEVER needed to begin with. So you first, fagboi.
Now stop stealing English and go die in some donkey shit flooded ditch, Crunchy fagboi.
Oh, and here’s something else to think about. With Funimation and the like offering an alternative to CR’s streams. CR’s days are numbered. I mean CR is just a shady leech. They never imported any anime in the US nor dubbed shit. CR gonna die like the shady parasite they are. Hope they don’t forget to take you with them.
As for your asinine BS banter about fansubs ded. 1) CR had +8 eight years to do it. FAILED (as normal for CR)
2) Regarding my age, in a way I guess. I remember when you needed blank tapes for subs. Then came the internet and idiots said subbing gonna die. FALSE. Next broadband, still no dice. YouTube? No shit again. Now CR? they had their chance 7 years ago. FAILED.
Try something else. Perhaps you’ll bring up the DMCA or copyright la…tyranny in your next riveting comment. Til then do change your diaper. YOU STINK!
Since Gary likes fine discourse so much. Why don’t we add some rules to make sure the conversation meets his high standards.
(i) It is the responsibility of the accuser [Gary] to provide proof of his statement that fansubs’ translation quality is in fact inferior.
(ii) Failure to provide solid factual evidence will render the opinion held by [Gary] devoid of any and all worth.
(iii) [Gary] Must disclose signed statements from people who believe fansubs are no longer needed. With conditions: 1) No less then 10,000,000 (Ten Million) unique legal age persons must agree with [Gary].
2) If even 10 (Ten) unique any age persons disagree with [Gary] in any sort of way regarding [Fansubs no longer being needed] then the opinion held be [Gary] shall be immediately declared unfit for any discourse. Further more [Gary] has 1 (one) day (24 hours) from the time of this comments posting to submit the Ten Million signed forms supporting his statement. The ten (10) individuals opposed to [Gary] are not bound by any time constraints. But must make themselves known in the time that [fansubs] exist.
Failure by [Gary] to follow these rules hereby set upon him. Will immediately make him [Gary] a faggot of the lowest kind and smelliest fecal matter degree. He shall then be executed via firing squad while being hung or banned from the interwebz. At the discretion of the fellows visiting this site [UTW] and it’s owners and operators also known as [Fansubbers].
*Reads rules*
Seems legit. I say (in cranky old man voice) HANG SHOOT THE FAGGOT FOR STEALING ENGLISH! then ban him from all interwebz just to be safe.
Dude, you have already proven that no one care.
You are the only one person active here.
“FACT : CR’s translations are awful. Prove me otherwise with real facts not your shit taste opinion.”
And how about you?
Any proves?\
It’s not a fact, unless you have something besides trash-talk.
Tetsu, Tsundere doesn’t have to prove the quality of fansubs beyond his own liking them.
Gary came here, a fansubbing site, and proclaimed that fansub’ quality is awful. It follows that Gary must provide proof of this. GenerlisimoTsundere would be need to provide proof of his claim that CR sucks if he went to CR’s site with his opinion.
>You are the only one person active here.
So Gary is dead? YAHOOO! Does he have a grave I can dance and then piss on? Or did they just flush him down like any other crap.
The absence of commenters is not the commenting of absence (of caring). It just means no one besides a few hardasses give enough fucks (or find flame wars fun) to refute Gary and you.
“It’s not a fact, unless you have something besides trash-talk.”
Kindly inform Gary of this groundbreaking discovery. But seeing that he only discovered CR like yesterday, it may take years for that information to reach his supremely diminutive and astoundingly elusive brain. I suggest you imprint the information on a very long probe and vigorously shove it up his ass. But be warned: He will like it. So have detox shower ready and wear at least an Ebola safe hazmat suit.
I know I’m late to the party, but does “Gary” not understand that the success of Japanese Anime in the west is almost exclusively attributed to piracy? I’ve written a few papers on the topic. If anyone is old enough to remember the 80’s and early 90’s, when hardcore fans of this so-called “japanimation” made subs in their basements on tape for no cost just so they could share it with anyone at all. Back then, the original creators never thought to market most of their works to the west; and if they did were extremely selective. I still remember going over to conventions and trading blank-labeled tapes with people of shows that wouldn’t be officially translated for years, and some could argue only were officially adapted because of the fanbase that was brought up through piracy. At the same time, Japanese fans of American science fiction shows such as Star Trek were pirating it for the same purpose at the time, and many times these fans would trade footage across the ocean. In the end, you can’t rely on corporations to please everyone. As a longtime fan of Type-Moon works, some of the translation, or rather editing, choices made for Crunchyroll I simply don’t agree with. I know that UFOtable has a hand in them, but honestly they’ve even posted statements to their official twitter and facebook about how they are sorry for improper English translations.
Grant, you’re a true man among men. Yes I remember the tape days. I was a little kid back then and loved watching them whenever my uncle could get them.
UTW best girl / master race
That’s just fact.
Can we expect further episodes anytime soon? I really appreciate your work, and have watched the anime any further than what you have released. Don’t really want to go to CR.
Don’t hate me for this, I am just curious and couldn’t find any announcement.
Hi,
I don’t mean to complain, but I seem to be getting some pixelation during certain parts of the episodes, not only this one – especially when there seems to be shockwave/flashes/smoke effects during the fights. Is this normal? I’ve checked and I’m running MPC version 1.7.8, latest build released on 25th Jan 2015.
Thanks UTW!
Planning on ketching up?
SEIIIIIBAAAA <3 <3 ~~~~
Thank you UTW for the double up and all your hard work is well appreciated!
wtf 2 episodes
Awwwyiiiieeees! Thanks a lot!
Sleep well ar onii-chan. Don’t be late for work Ok. ~.^
Thanks again guys.
nice screencap swap
#based
You guys sure churn out a lot of content for a retired group.
Related: Please never 100% actually retire, UTW.
Is it just me or is Sabers nose looking really awkward?
@Duck
That shouldn’t really be difficult.
They just need to do episode 4 before Saturday.
You guys are washed up. There’s no need for you to sub anymore with CR.
Just kidding, I’m not a retarded troll.
Thanks for the release, based ar.
But then again, I’m not a fansubber (let alone one subbing this show). So I can’t really gauge the difficulty of subbing this show.
thanks guys I was waiting its nice to see to damn good fillers to the point that you feel that they should be adapted to the VN 😀
Thanks!!!!
ahh I think nyaa is down so could we get some magnets please?
seconded (?) shinobigod. Nyaa is down at time being
Do the one’s HERE still work…? ( v ̄▽ ̄)♪
So long as it is needed… (^ ^ )
wow thanks utw 🙂
now Nyaa’s back
Thank you again~
Got an estimate for Ep 4?
The day is now 4x as good. Thanks for the hard work!
O.o That fight is the most retardedly awesome thing I’ve seen all year.
Berserker confirmed as the missing fifth Pillar Man. (He even has a dubstep theme!)
Ole~! Ole~! Ole Ole Ole~~~!!!
Thanks again, You made my day guys.
YOU ARE GREAT.
@fotc http://i.imgur.com/8L7hSNz.jpg
Thank you, much appriciated. Cant watch Fate with HS or any other group
Alright… Moving on — WOAH!? Σ(っ゚Д゚;)っ
You guys sure she said Zelle? might be Seele, just wrong pronounced idunno…
Never thought I’d say this but I prefer Commie subs. You guys over do localization and change the wording around too much. Commie keeps it literal and accurate to the exact words.
Hey, fotc. I bet you would know the answer to this question.
Did you have any plans with Underwater on the Gaworare OVA coming in December?
Thanks again for the recently released episodes. Your effort is appreciated. I have a translation related question. In Aniplex’s subs, Saber says: “Thank you for saving me from that, but would you mind unhanding me?”
You, however, have translated that line as: “Thank you for your quick thinking, but would you mind unhanding me? ”
To my knowledge, Aniplex’s translation got it right. So, why did you change it?
More proof to what I was saying. They like changing shit around too much.
I just wanna ask,
are you guys (UTW) translating or transliterating??
There is quite a difference between them… And could mean different things
Well, the subs aren’t entirely written in romaji, so…
Of course there isnt a single “correct” translation.
ETA on episode 4?
The obvious answer to everyone who constantly asks when the next ep is, “when it’s done.” Patience seems to be a virtue that is steadily declining as the years go by.
@Fate/fan
>Onii-chan
>little brother
Are we allowed to ignore you now?
@kokujin-kun
Well, if we want to talk about origins, Artoria perfectly fits too (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucius_Artorius_Castus), though if you just want to stick with what Raze went, then that’s fine too.
Saber pronounces it “Arturia” HERSELF in Fate/Zero. You can’t get any more clear cut than that. #dealwithit
@Synced
Thanks for clarification ^^
About the Ilya/Illya debate:

hah and i thought you guys were retiring from the subbing scene
i’m guessing this is one last project you guys are undertaking before you call it quits? Pretty symbolic show to finish before quitting if i might say so myself 😛
thanks again you guys are awesome
There are unlimited possibilities… ¯_(ツ)_/¯ In this world.
I should also mention, it’s been established that her heroic spirit to be that of King Arthur not Lucius Artorius Castus.
^ Forgot to erase that extra “that”. Nitpick about it. I dare you.
Xythar stinx.
@Grecian Urn
My inquiry was about the full spelling of her full name not the nickname…
There’s a “not” missing in that last sentence. Whatever.
And another typo. Not culmination, but agglutination.
Onii-chan shouldn’t be put to ‘brother’. Ever.
@Anon
I never said it should, if that’s what you’re implying.
I’ll also take this chance to state irrefutable truths:
Arturia>>Artoria
Illya>>Ilya
@Anon
Part of the reason I mixed up onii-chan was because I was thinking what you wrote on the third paragraph. Another one can be contributed to me being sleepy and tired.
@Synced
People often hear what they want to hear not what is actually said
So yeah, your personal preference caused you this topic that should not have started in the first place
(y) Arturia likes this
I’m only in this for the crossdressing warrior lady I don’t care what her name is
Sometimes making a small change to an authors original work is very justified.
#Arturia
Thanks for the releases!
@ITSARTURIA
Sorry man, but no. She definitely says Arutoria in that episode.
I also believe Arturia is better than Artoria, but you can’t just deny reality like that.
Disagreeing ≠ denying reality. As said prior I listened and am sure it’s pronounced that way. Though if enough people chime in and say otherwise…
Sora no Method best show this season. BRING ON THE HATE!
If you don’t like the names they’re using, you can edit the script yourself… It’s actually pretty easy.
I’m really confused about this. What is the “right” english for 魔力, Maryoku? Prana or Mana?
@Mikael
http://typemoon.wikia.com/wiki/Prana
@Mikael
And the wait continues…
…for the next ep. That is…! ニヤ(・∀・)ニヤ
Heh… Was suddenly reminded of — Unlicensed Blade Works for some reason… 😀
Will greatly anticipate the remaining eps with your great subs…! 😉
Still waiting on the puchimas things that have been put off 😛
I suppose my wording lacked complementary information to properly get across what I meant.
@mnmega
P.S. the question at the end of my comment up there is rhetorical. It’s for making a point, not really asking a question.
Any time now.
John Smith,
Could you maybe, pretty please ask Haruhi to do something about it. Just you know hint that getting the universe blo…I mean SYD Bleep batch out might be a good idea.
Well… It might… It’s a free country…? For now… プップギャーッ!!m9゚。(^Д^゚≡。^Д^)m9゚。プップギャ-ッ!!!
So… Next ep. when?
Also… U DO HAVE PLANS about subbing that ワタモテ OVA, right…?

This group is dead. Their mothers made them move out of the basements, and go into the real world.
Or they’re all waiting on one person and don’t want to do the work for them because they would then get their workload for the rest of the series
Or I’m full of shit
Unlimited Delay Works
@Xythar:
Σ ヽ(゚ □° )ノ!!
Please, do the Little Busters! EX episodes… No one have done good subs for the two last episodes!
And that’s the main difference with other fansub groups. Endlessly waiting just isn’t worth it but with UTW, you can always expect quality.
REALLY…? Kidding aside… Understandable request though. Since, a certain other group’s delays on subbing the last two eps of EX is starting to get to me as well…
Where is the cake?
I’m enjoying UTW’s subs and I have the patience to wait for it. Take care and good luck on yer future endeavors… ლ(╹◡╹ )
Well, if I ask, it’s because UTW&Mazui did the 1st season of LB! and now, everyone is waiting for good subs for LB! EX two last episodes.
i will wait till the end of december. Hopefully, they would have released ep 04 and above after that
i have practiced waiting with fate hollow
Dear UTW.
Please just drop this show and put everybody out of their misery.
But misery is fun.

If you want to watch someone else, watch someone else. You don’t need us to hold your hand and make your decision for you.
You underestimate me. I will wait months for you
Still waiting for you guys no matter what
Also, just wondering, I know you have responsibilities and stuff to do in life and such, though what is making delays in releases? I don’t remember waiting for you this long for any release, other for quality ones.
One of you cant find time to do it so you don’t want to do their work? Fine with me, but if its like that and he is lazy bastard, put some pressure on him 😛 a bit, sometimes its needed to be pushy
Eh, the translation checker is busy and nobody can replace him.
MESSAAAAAAAGE
Too bad… if it prolongs think of recruiting a backup xD
Keep on doing the good work :3
Also, if its not a secret, did you finish your work for the latest episode too? 😀
But we aren’t recruiting anymore. UTW is kinda ded. We’re just going with the staff we have still.
And uh, I’m not even sure where we are upto to be honest.
UTW should have trained up some new recruits! If UTW dies then fansubbing will truly be ded. Me waiting for these episodes is like the grief period for quality subs and I’ll be damned if I won’t cry some more.
Well we did hire people but they also died, and it’s kinda hard to train translators tbh. You either find them or you don’t.
Just kill off your damn pitiful subgroup already you normies. Your release delays have been awful for about 2 years now and you clearly don’t give a shit about the community anymore.
That’s a shame. Well, I’ll be waiting on these subs and any further projects you guys decide to do, be it Fate, Toaru, or whatever else.
Thank you for taking time working on the definitive translation of the Fate/ series UTW team.
Still waiting! It will worth waiting, though…
I find it hilarious and pathetic that there are still people out there waiting for the rest of the episodes to get subbed by this group just because they don’t like the other subs for making minor mistakes here and there.
This is the only anime I will have watched in years. I’m not exactly in a hurry to dirty my eyes with lesser subs.
@elmaton04
I find it hilarious and pathetic that there is a 10 year old whining about other people waiting. Good hard spanking is what brats these days need.
How right you are… ( ^ ^ )
Quite disturbing… :
@elmaton04
>minor mistakes
No mistakes on Commie’s version, faster, better TS and characterization.
But fanboys will be fanboys.
I am waiting for UTW cause Fate isn’t Fate without them
Indeed the signs of the end days… What ye ar’ doing is merely delaying the inevitable… (・ー・) オワッタナ

Commie’s release is by no means bad, but you should probably refrain from making statements you have no way of verifying. I wouldn’t even claim that there are no errors in our version, but we’ve certainly fixed a lot so far.
@fotc 11:22
That .gif what anime or hentai is it from? I must know!
@GenerlisimoTsundere:
HERE ya go! ;p
@fotc,
Have a li’l something to pass the time… ( ¬‿¬)
>commie just as good
slap yourself anon. I’d rather watch raws without understanding anything at all than watch commie. Last things I watched by commie were Neptunia and KLK. NEVER AGAIN. NEVER AGAIN. I WISH COMMIE DIED.
Oddly… The above comment sounded kinda like…
I do believe that there should be a “belongs”. Or is that just commie English.
http://english.stackexchange.com/questions/65023/i-who-has-vs-i-who-have
You wouldn’t say “I belongs among the heavens”, would you?
Amagi 8 is up, if you didn’t see 🙂
http://www.animetake.com/amagi-brilliant-park-episode-8/
GenerlisimoTsundere is right about belong/belongs. “[W]ho belong(s) among the heavens” is an appositive phrase and does not follow the same subject–predicate rules as the main clause.
Speaking of the main clause in that particular line, which is really a sentence fragment, it would be correct if he were to say “Me” rather “I” in context. Surely, one can see why it would be incorrect if someone said “You’re making me stand on the same ground as you? I?”
I talk about grammar, and I make a typo. Woe is me.
** “Me” rather than “I”
Being grammar nazis always bites people in the ass~
Hm!? I’ll just stay out of this one… 😐
Episode 4 please

Ya’ hear!!
I’m keeping myself pure for UTW. Horrible’s is so bad I can’t stand it.
Not as dead as FFF. lol.
@MD
You sir are a special specimen, a rare mentally challenged one at that. Also sorosoro.
Quoting @ : ” Can wait over a thousand years… ”
Where have I seen that line before…? :
Meh… Perhaps read something similar somewhere before. And since December’s so very near now… Gotta start getting busy for the end ‘o this year…! (^^)y
i have waited 5 years for FHA. 1 month behind schedule? This is nothing!
*sob*
@Pramit
Why then you always whine to me about being UTW fanboy when I tell u not to watch Commie? xD
@shandris: ssh…
lmao someone just said Commie is better than UTW? …….. Go back to their shitty ass translation and enjoy their butchered localized shit. GTFO.
Watching HS and waiting on UTW to be released. Looking forward to more Fate stuff from Type-Moon and ufotable.
who said commie is better than utw?! lol
shandris please..look what you’ve done..
I don’t think watching Commie is the worst thing in the world but anyone archiving Commie is a special kind of special.
#staymad
Sorosoro.
“{\i1}Independent familiars with auto-homing capabilities.

{\i1}She’s like some kind of mini Magus!”
Bullshit.
Get a TLC who actually know japanese.
This one clearly not.
@uwotmate Even xythar himself dare not make that claim. wot u tinkin m8
Such a lamentation… For us all…! ε=ε=ε= 。・゚(゚ノT-T)ノ
Are we truly headed towards a horrible horrible future!?
“I’ll say it again, Commie > Utw. #staymad”
So you are saying crunchy roll is doing a better job on UBW than UTW. Please elaborate.
@Kingu: I don’t know what you’re watching, but the subs definitely don’t say that.

Seeing that long delay time, could’nt the TLC had allocated some time for his/her work on this?
sorosoro onegai
“cursing about their mistakes and how you would have done better.”
Better, my ass.
They are nothing compared to Crunchyroll.
That’s why its silly edit, not original TL.
Just die already, you scumbags.
Stop stealing hard work of CR’s TL.
At least have some proud, dirty thieves.
>complaining about stealing scripts
Where was the complaints when they used Aniplex’s scripts for F/Z?
I think all that I need to do to point out how Aniplex’s scripts are somewhere slightly above acceptable is:
– That point in the subs where Archer was wearing white.
– “The Archer class really is made up of archers”
Not to mention that the lines that Kingu pointed out were in the Aniplex script.

Welp, I waited. I guess I’ll be hopping over to shitty Commie since it looks like UTW died again and I’d like to watch UBW.
Hopefully you guys will resurrect again and finish UBW so there will be decent subs to archive.
First Eclipse and now UTW sigh….

What the hell are you talking about nigger?
You goin full retard or something.
So guys,
which other group’s release do you suggest for this show?
I know none’s perfect, but maybe list one or two releases and the reason (such as “fidelity to japanese script”, “grammar”, etc)
Thanks.
@WannaSeeUBW:
Read the above comments, pretty much. Inb4 more Commie/HS fanbois fighting about which subs are shittier.
I’m more interested whether there is a chance for someone else to fill in for the TLC… And what proficiency level of Japanese would be required if there was.
I gave up.
Watching HS releases…
Would like to watch UTW releases but so slow…
@Maurox
I don’t quite fancy sifting through all the vitriol to find other sub groups, personally, so could ya perhaps give me what your first bet would be for good quality subs? Otherwise I’ll just shrug and go download the HorribleSubs stuff since that tends to be about average and watchable.
i’ll wait till december 16…
Still busy… Mostly… ( ̄-; ̄)
@Maurox
Because __ar and fotc are the same person, apparently.
@DRRR
@Xythar
Because ‘your blog’ clearly means that the blog is exclusively ar’s and not representative of UTW as a whole, apparently. If you’re going to try and deflect a point, at least understand the point being deflected.
@ar
I will forever wait for your delicious BluRay release!
Thanks for the work everyone!

@ExFan
@Swede

@Gary [SuckyTheCocky]

*proofs

RIP UTW
Can we expect further episodes anytime soon? I really appreciate your work, and have watched the anime any further than what you have released. Don’t really want to go to CR.
Don’t hate me for this, I am just curious and couldn’t find any announcement.
D E A D B O Y S
LOL. Ban me pls. Don’t want visiting this in the future anyways.
Hi,
I don’t mean to complain, but I seem to be getting some pixelation during certain parts of the episodes, not only this one – especially when there seems to be shockwave/flashes/smoke effects during the fights. Is this normal? I’ve checked and I’m running MPC version 1.7.8, latest build released on 25th Jan 2015.
