Bet you didn’t expect to see this! I didn’t either so don’t worry, but this is just how things turned out once the ball got rolling.
It started with me encoding the episode, then deciding I’d typeset it and retime the CR script to my encode. Then I asked fnord if he wanted to help with the OP/ED of which he translated both and did the awesome monochrome kara for the ED. Then we got stuck on a few lines so Raze helped out, and yeah. This is the finished product.
After watching this episode and really enjoying it, I took it on my own to work on it. This isn’t a UTW project because we didn’t do the Dialogue translation (that was taken from Crunchyroll as the translation is excellent), but the encoding and typesetting are mine. Because the show isn’t set in Japan there are few honorifics as well, so where they could be translated they were, and where they couldn’t they were left in place.
I plan to continue this series weekly, but don’t expect speed. It’ll probably be the Sunday or Monday my time when it gets released. Future episodes won’t take as long as the majority of the episode to episode work has been done. It’ll just be typesetting and encoding mostly, so it’ll depend how busy my weekend is but I’ll try to get it out during then.
For XviD downloaders, I have encoded to ~171mb which will allow for a 26 episodes to fit on a SL DVD-R/DVD+R. I believe this show is planned for a 2 season run.
The following are fixed in the v2 patch along with a few other minor things to keep consistency with Episode 2 onwards:
Victorique -> Victorica
Saubure -> Sauville
Revenge of the Box -> Box’s revenge
Final v2 script and v2 patch for the 720p are up.
Patching:
Whichever 720p you have (doesn’t matter if it’s patched or not) just place it in a new folder, extract the patch there and run it.
If you aren’t using Windows see the README.txt file included for details on which diff does what.
PS: I won’t change the group name now even though her name differs, rather it can just be a running joke instead!

2. thank you very much! this helps me a lot, it’s been my dilemma for days now where to get my high quality GOSICK release and you just solved my problem. thanks again.
hope you don’t drop this anime, this is the best for me this season. ^^,

7. Oops sorry about the links.
@ragyxx
No the title of the topic is correct. This show is called Gothic in English. Gosick is a hepburn romanization of ???? (goshikku) where si = shi, kku = ck.
I only named the file “Gosick” because that’s what people will look for rather than if I used “Gothic”.

8. ar, you continue to spoil us πŸ˜€

I enjoyed this show a lot so it’s all good! The amount of detail is wow, and the characters are interesting, and as the story! Plus the OP/ED rock!

11. Well, I thought the first episode was kinda dissapointing, I expected something more from Gosick.
But having it from you will definitely be an improvement, It would be awesome if you translated it,
But having 720p is awesome enough.

12. @ar
the amount of detail is to be expected along with the amazing OP/ED cause it’s a BONES anime, they almost never disappoint.

Gosick is an intentional mispelling (so they say) and it’s on the LN’s cover in roomaji, so you should keep that imho. Moreover prequel is named GosickS… which would be more difficult to explain…

I think Victorique is right
According to what I found online anyways. Like Amazon reviews of the novels.
I don’t know about Grevil’s middle name…thing. I don’t know French. But wiki says Grevil de Blois.

46. @guibin
http://img573.imageshack.us/img573/2074/largeanimepaperscansgos.jpg
According to this drama cd and the manga, Victorica is correct (plus the katakana ends in ka) so I’ll go with that. The manga has du for Grevil’s middle name too rather than de, plus there is no kana for the “du” sound exactly, the closest would be a voiced “to”; “do”. This’ll be one of those shows where names might not be 100%, because French->Japanese->English. They get muddled up at the Japanese stage!

47. guibin on January 12, 2011 at 9:18 am said:

I think it’s a French pronunciation thing :/

48. I speak some french (I learnt for 4 years during school) and “de” in french sounds like more like a “te” in Japanese. So while it could be a bad kana’ization, it’s more like to be “du” than “de” but again with the Japanese who knows. It’s kinda like english->engrish but worse.

49. I’m French and IMO, it should be Grevil de Blois.
Blois is a French city, and the article “de”, which means usually “of.
It is a nobility particle, so Grevil de Blois means “Grevil of Blois”, or more precisely “Grevil, whose family domain is in Blois”.
“du” would mean “of the”, and would make sense only if Blois was a common noun, like “Grevil du chΓ’teau de Aaaaaaaargh” would be “Grevil of the castle of Aaaaaaaargh”. Here Blois is a proper name so “de” is the right article.
See for example William de Blois on Wikipedia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_de_Blois

50. Plus, it is recommended for French to Japanese katakana transcription to use ? (do) for the article “de”.

51. Akien,
In that case, I’ll fix it back to ‘de’. Didn’t know about that recommendation.

52. @ ar
Awesome as always
as for “de” vs “du”, both of them exist in french naming
thank you and all the UTW Staff, and hope you will be keeping it up

53. One more thing, french romanizes much better then english. it’s only that those BONES fags…

54. Yeah I’ve seen both “du” and “de” used in French names as why I wasn’t sure.

60. Hi, I love this anime ( I’m reading the manga ) but… isn’t it Gosick ?

61. Best fansubber for Gosick.
Btw its Sauville not Saubure…
Hope you’ll continue working on this anime…

62. How to put the updated script in the video soft styled sub? Thanks!

63. I haven’t seen the episode yet but i want to explain the difference between “de” and “du” as i have some knowledge of french. πŸ™‚
“de” means “of” in english or just of something…
“du” comes from “de le” and “le” is means “the” for a male word. so “du” is “of the…(male word)”. If it was a female word, i would be “de la”…
srry my english isn’t good either :p

@ Dizz, Use mkvmerge GUI for replacing the script.

65. @Alvord12
Tried mkvmerge GUI but I can’t play it on KMPlayer. Doesn’t show any vid. T_T
Do I need to re-encode it or something?

66. @Alvord12
Fixed it with mkclean tool. Thanks!

67. xD I was wondering what Gosick meant. Kinda the same thing as Kanon.

68. One of my comment was lost, I fear… it was long… -___-”’
It isn’t “Sauville”. I can’t understand the whole “sauville” thing
In the LN is written “sovyuuru”, so it should be Sauvioure. Saubure, it’s probably a misinterpretation of the people who produced the anime. Moreover it’s probably a French-ification of Soviore (a famous place in an highly-tourst area, which is an italiana World heritage site).
Then there is “DE BLOIS”.
Do you remember Louise from Zero no Tsukaima?
She was named after The Duchess de la Valliere, right? The daughter of this Duchess was known as Mademoiselle de Blois (it’s even on the japanese wiki).
If you still don’t understand and don’t fear spoiler read this one:
Victorica is Victorica de Blois.
It makes sense to me… well, can’t believe is something else^^
(^.^)/Β°

69. so what does the final patch contain? after oh so many changes

70. Fixes names, a few script lines, and a couple of OP changes. It’s nothing major but I’ll put a final v2 patch out shortly, thus why I’ve removed it.
Edit: I’ve put final v2 patch + script up. No more changes upcoming, if there is they’ll be in the mid series batch.

71. tormaid on January 13, 2011 at 3:46 am said:

Sounds like a rough start πŸ˜›
You changed the title of the post to Gosick, dose that mean you will remove the “Gothic” title at the beginning of the episode too? Or is that just for clarification?

72. Yeah I pulled that too. It’s nothing major and it’s not really needed. I did have fun making it, I guess that’s what counts! :>
This kinda start is pretty typical for a first episode I guess, especially one for this kind of show. I’ve now enlightened myself about most of the quirks I might come across in future episodes. So I hope I won’t need to not v2 anymore eps!

76. Just a question, why did you use “Victorique” and not “UTW”? πŸ˜›

77. kliqIMB on January 14, 2011 at 5:16 am said:

So you are actually encoding this not as UTW staff.
Is it Victorica? not Victorique?
Which one is the correct one?
How did She (Victorica) write her own name in the anime?

79. @Victorique Fans
The drama cd has it written as Victorica, and the Gosick JP website has her picture filename as victorica so I’d say it’s this.

80. Ibblemit on January 15, 2011 at 11:38 am said:

>Set in historic Europe
>Honorifics still thrown around
>Japanese name order
Oh come on, you’d best be joking. It doesn’t take a genius to realise you should simply drop the honorifics (they don’t need to ‘translate’ to anything) and fix the name. Either you haven’t fixed a gross problem with the Crunchy script or you have actively crapped up the script by adding them in. Either way I’m not impressed, as it is massively jarring with the setting.

81. FlareKnight on January 15, 2011 at 8:04 pm said:

@ar
But the released novels spell it Victorique so it’s a bit of a mixed message.

82. causal1ty on January 16, 2011 at 4:53 am said:

@ibblemit
If people are talking in Japanese, they’re going to use honorifics and their own name order. It doesn’t fit the setting straight away because they’re talking Japanese.
What is unnatural is hearing the eastern name order and reading the western one.

83. Pingback: GenX Fansub

84. @ibblemit
With this show in particular I don’t mind removing honorifics (because it’s pretty much only Kujo who uses them anyway and they don’t really add anything useful so far).
I also have no problems typesetting signs in western name order, which I usually do and generally the Japanese use western name order for romanized signs as well.
I won’t budge on the spoken name order though, the script will reflect how it’s spoken. If you aren’t happy with that you can always edit scripts and change it yourself.
@FlareKnight
It is indeed a mixed message. I’ve chosen to use Victorica for the time being because that seems to be the spelling Bones went with. If I come across a sign that states otherwise I’ll make changes for the mid-season batch. There hasn’t been any signs yet with either spelling.
Knowing Bones though, the animators will randomly use either spelling like they did in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, ie. Ishval vs Ishbal. Some episodes had the former, others the latter *lol*
Edit: On a side note, hopefully I can get Episode 2 finished today πŸ™‚

85. @ar
I don’t think honorifics should be removed, since it’s a detective show, the honorifics might be of some significance for some case or puzzle.
Hope Episode 2 is released soon.

86. Ibblemit on January 17, 2011 at 5:38 pm said:

@ar
Well quite, it only takes a few minutes per episode to demux/fix/remux and will continue to download your version even without modification for its otherwise superior nature. It just stands to reason to try and convince you of your weakness and save my time over the episodes. I’ll agree to disagree about the name order, but would still strongly advocate against retaining any honorifics given their absurdity in the setting (bringing back in particular memories of a version of Baccano! I was stuck with for a long time that left them strewn all over and really tried its best to ruin the atmosphere). @shn11’s concern is moot because the writer would have to be a complete and utter hack to hinge a mystery around a system that doesn’t exist in the setting he’s writing about. I have yet to see episode 2, so forgive me if this has already been resolved one way or another.
@causal1ty
Say what you will for name order, but I’m pretty sure you can’t outdo ‘faux-Frenchman using Japanese honorifics in faux-France’ for weirdness.

87. Loki no Nikki on January 20, 2011 at 7:20 pm said:

Why change victorique to victorica? Victorique is actually her name in the book. I have the first volume of the english translation by tokyopop for reference and checked both wikipedia and MAL for confirmation.

88. @Loki
Seems the Japanese are using Victorica. CR got the Victorique originally from the Tokyopop novel it seems. When a sign comes up that has the right spelling for her name I’ll either keep it or if its Victorique on the sign it’ll be changed back to that. Until then I’m only going by what the Japanese seem to be using.

89. Saubure definitely ain’t Sauville. Sauville is on the other end of France from where they show Saubure to be in the episode…

90. @Aus
Well apparently they say it’s a made up province or something. So no idea. Tokyopop were the one’s who translated saubure as sauville originally.
