And here it is, our new project for Winter 2011! This project is slightly special in that we’ve broken our normal “don’t sub what someone else fast and decent is already doing” rule, but our translator Moshiburner really wanted to work on it.
Several strokes of “bad luck” (among them scheduled power outages, unexpected power outages, transport stream trouble, and people having to go to bed) wrought havoc on the starting episode of this project, but here’s the end result despite the delay. Please also pardon the random beeps in the episode; those were in the original broadcast, unfortunately. Hopefully future episodes will go smoother.
Before you ask, yes, this is 100% our own homebrewed script, from the spoken dialogue to the song translations (if you can even call subbing the ED that). I’ve gotta run now, so I’ll let the release speak for itself!
P.S.: I will no longer be posting links to our scripts on release posts. You can find our script repository by clicking on “Scripts” to the bottom right of the site banner.

Perhaps a idea, youre choise to ignore or not.
If you start with a new anime/serie, mind adding some info what’s it about?
I browse through fansubs websites and see they start a new anime, but then I need to start digging on other websites whats it all about. Because sometimes the titel/screenshot isn’t appealing to try it out.

  25. mricefungus on January 14, 2011 at 11:38 am said:

wait.. I dont get how the time for comments is later than the time right now?

  26. @Desbreko
This is why comparing screenshots is silly, but I’ve taken heed and the next episode won’t have that problem since I’ve adjusted my filtering chain slightly to fix it. Thanks for pointing it out.
I probably should add that umee’s encode looks fine as a whole watching it in motion, and if I didn’t know what flaws to look for I probably wouldn’t notice most of them while watching the video at a normal viewing distance. That’s why it’s typically a bad idea to compare screenshots because any tiny flaws that’d otherwise never been seen during motion appear when still and change frame to frame. Things look different moving than still.

@Dutch Faggot – Not hard to have MAL open in another tab. They’re already subbing this so you can weeaboo to your heart’s content for free, it wouldn’t kill you to research which shows you want to watch on your own.
@mricefungus – UTW exists between the boundaries of time and space, and therefore your notion of time does not govern their actions. UTW does not adhere to the 24 hour day/night cycle, and any attempt to wrangle them back into our plane of existence will be treated as dividing by zero. Either that, or there happens to be multiple time zones around the world the site may be running on.

Excellent, thanks. One note, though: it’s Down By The Sally Gardens. It’s a traditional Irish ballad (fitting, since this seems to be set in Ireland).

  39. Normally I wouldn’t bother with such a small line, but it’s kind of important in this case.
    ~19:45 – ??????
Pretty sure it should be something like “Protect him for me, ok?” not “Let him protect you.” Unless she was staring at the charm and her dialogue was intended to be directed at Clain, but that’s rather unlikely and would still not be “Let him protect you.” but rather “Protect this charm for me.” Of course I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure I’m not.

I guess you already filled all the slots for shows this season, but couldn’t you consider Kimi ni Todoke maybe? First season was done by Eclipse who did an awesome job on that, this season is done by gg and m.3.3.w and none of them is satisfying :/

  41. jmaeshawn on January 14, 2011 at 11:23 pm said:

m.3.3.w. is doing just as good of a job on KnT2 as Eclipse did on the 1st season… No need to bother with anyone else…
The only show this that needs someone to do it so far is Mitsudomoe 2, as no one outside of crunchycrap and the crunchycrap rip groups have released it yet.

  45. @KBKarma
I’m not sure what you mean? The title of the poem is Down by the Salley Gardens which you’ve mispelt? Or do you mean the capitalization?

  46. elmaton04 on January 15, 2011 at 4:17 am said:

Excellent show, thanks for everything guys!

  47. @Anon
??????? > “Let him protect you” would be an accurate translation for that, ‘him’ being Clain, ‘you’ referring to Nessa . If it were to be in the sense of “Protect this charm for me”, it’d be ?????/???????.
Hmm, a quick googling returned both “Sally” and “Salley” as acceptable spellings for the poem.

  48. @anon
Credits have the song name written as Down by the Salley Gardens, so that’s probably the one to go with in this case! I’ll fix the capitalization in the lyrics next week though. I guess I didn’t notice I had them written in lower case.

  49. Say, did someone else received a FAILED HASH CHECK while downloading this file? I get the torrent file from this site. The download did complete without problems but I hope that the file was not compromised.

  50. @anon
First off, I agree that it’s unlikely to be “Protect this charm.” for a number of reasons. However ???? is the same as ??? in terms of overall meaning, there’s a slight nuance difference but that’s about it. Also to “let someone” do something is ??? or some variant of that, hence why “Let him protect you.” is probably wrong. On top of that, ????/??? is used to talk about the speaker receiving a favor. She’s not asking the charm “Do me the favor of letting yourself be protected.” because that would involve a passive conjugation. She is instead asking “Can you do me the favor of protecting.” with the implied direct object being Clain.
Basically, the issue is who is doing the protecting and it really doesn’t seem like she’s asking for Clain to protect the charm.?That is of course, unless I have the wrong idea about how ???? is being used here, but again I don’t think that is the case.

    Thx UTW guys

  52. Seems like this show is going to be awesome.

  53. c1ancy on January 15, 2011 at 2:23 pm said:

As the show is set in Ireland i think the place clains father is from is meant to be Limerick which is on the west coast as the show seems to take place there.

  54. @Anon
???? and ??? have different meanings, former being the potential form of the latter, which is the root word. Now to think of it, the part ??????from ?????? would be strange as that would be the imperative form of the word, which makes no sense when coupled with verbs. I think it would be ?????? which is heard quite often in conversational Japanese.
On another note, while ????/ ??????? doesn’t change the meaning of the verbs they are coupled to, they mean a whole world of difference in understanding the direction of the action, where in this case, who’s doing the protecting and who’s being protected.
Perhaps you were thinking of the causative form for the translation “Let him protect you”, which would be something along the lines of ???????????????? (Forgive me if I make a mistake on ???/??? here; my grammar’s getting rusty :S). Also, assuming that I interpreted correctly what you said, “Can you do me the favor of protecting [Clain]?”, it would be ??????????????, which is very different to the what Phryne said.
And you’re right, Phryne’s not asking Clain to protect the charm, she’s asking the charm (Nessa) to let Clain protect her, or at least, that’s the sense of that phrase when I watched the episode.

  55. Desbreko on January 15, 2011 at 8:27 pm said:

Well, judging the whole video based only on cherry picked screens or arguing based on insignificant details that can’t be seen in motion is obviously dumb. But screen shot comparisons are still plenty useful for pointing out larger differences, as in this case. Dismissing them entirely is just as silly as relying on them entirely.

  57. @anon
If it’s ???? that makes sense then, I should probably listen more closely huh? I also think like you do, it makes more sense for her to want Nessa to be protected rather than Nessa to protect Clain.

Almost shat myself when I saw “GARDA” on the cop car.
Luimneach is the Irish for Limerick, if that’s what his father meant.

  64. Another note, if his father meant Limerick, then his mother might have meant the “Golden Vale” which is a region around Limerick, Tipperary, and Cork ~ish.

  65. AnotherAnon on January 18, 2011 at 10:45 pm said:

Sorry for being a beginner to moonspeak, but don’t ??? and ???? mean pretty much the same thing? One is an imperative and the other is a contraction of ??????, right? I’m under the impression that those are both command forms.

@Tsukiko88: I think the main reason they rage quit was due to [HorribleSubs]/[CrunchySubs] ripping and uploading their copy of fractale within hours of release.
Though Anime companies dislike fansubs, they do respect them to a certain degree since many of them also use to fansub when they were young.
Also [UTW] keep up the good work.

  75. Fractale Production Committee is being retarded.

  76. FUNimation got DMCAed. This is the funniest thing I came across in years. 😀

  77. Kutsukiboshii on January 20, 2011 at 9:33 am said:

Ignore them and continue the hard work, if they try to stop you guys don’t worry, there will be re-uploads everywhere in 20+ mirrors. The ignorance should be clean by common sense.

  78. @Tsukiko88: Let me tell you one thing son, the world isn’t about the god forbidden USA only. There are shit tons of other countries outside of ‘the’ USA, and since there are countries, it might surprise you but yes, there are people living there, and since there are people, there are anime fans within those people who don’t have access to FUNi. So go to your mommy if you have complains for not being able to watch it ‘legally’ anymore with 360p eye cancer too. I hope your country has better medical plans, since sooner than later, you’ll need to see eye specialists if you keep on following their releases.

  79. Trellmor on January 20, 2011 at 9:58 am said:

Since there are no more legal streams it’s more important the ever to have fansubs for this show as an alternative, right? Right!

  80. @shani: Epic post. I have no knowledge on why they COULD NOT get that simple fact.

  81. Hello, I’m a big fan of your releases UTW but I’d prefer to watch Fractale legally. If given the choice of watching something on Hulu or downloading it, I’ll watch it on Hulu to help support the anime. Every little bit helps. Maybe it’s just because I’m an older guy but when I was a teen anime was something you had to fight to find and even if it was crap you still watched it and loved it. So stop the hating and flaming. Just drop the series, you’ve only done one episode. Didn’t you do the same with HSotD since it was licensed?

  82. @Tony, gg subbed HSotD when it was licenced, not UTW (who do a cracking job on their translations). I live outside the US so Fractle isn’t available to me, so I really do thank UTW for their subs. Thanks gents!

  83. Funi should sue FTC for breach of contract and file extortion charges. They’re holding the episodes under the condition Funi does their dirty work, that’s extortion. SUE! SUE! SUE!
Oh and fuck them both, as if I was going to watch some poorly encoded 360P video, when I can watch it in HD.

  84. @Tsukiko88 suck a herpes covered dick, you fucking faggot.
arEdit: No need to fuel the fires any further, there’s plenty burning on ANN already it seems~

  85. @Brit: They were gonna sub it then dropped it. ANd sorry it isn’t available to you. My main concern is people who have a ton of legal ways to watch a show and still choose to pirate it.
@Yaro: You can watch the shows in 480p on Hulu. On my lcd tv it looks just fine.

  86. Some random faggot on January 20, 2011 at 8:43 pm said:

Well played, good sirs. Keep up the fantastic work. ?

  87. @Tony: Fansub groups doesn’t exist solely for US fags like you. How I wish that fansub groups would region lock those in the US as well.

  88. Most of us don’t have legal alternatives and would prefer them. It would surely mean we’d have more free time to do our own things rather than spending that time putting a release together. Until region restrictions vanish entirely things aren’t going to change anytime soon.

  89. After all, simulcasting business just started in 2009. Do these companies expect fansubs to magically disappear?

  90. Merushi on January 21, 2011 at 1:38 am said:

    @shani: nice one

  91. @D_P: Lolz. In America! Nuff said.

  92. ar hit it right on the money. Licensed fansubbing would virtually cease to exist if they stopped blocking content, based on country IP range. Thou on the flipside, HS would just have more weekly releases.

  93. Kinda interesting that fractale is based in Ireland, yet they don’t stream it here.

  94. It’s interesting that I have access to FUNi, but sorryz, I can’t spend monies on eye specialists. UTW is the way to go for me.
