Weekly blogging time~
Would have had this out earlier but I wasn’t happy with the previous encode so I redid it (already re-encoded it once before this) but you know what they say, third time’s the charm. This encode came out a lot nicer than the last two, so I’m happy. Other than that, it’s a cool episode so enjoy! This ends the Queen Berry mystery!
If you’re wondering why the release is a little on the big side, it’s because a good chunk of the episode is really dark scenes.

Good thing I decided to refresh one more time just to be safe. Gosick before bed is a great thing indeed. πŸ˜€ Thanks for the release as always.

2. ar delivers. Thanks mate.

Nice. Thanks

4. Thanks for the HD!

5. Yeah… It’s so dark and noisy picture, which could use more time (and some efforts) to encode in a better shape.
What about translation? …fine as usually.

Yay moar Victorica! XD

yes, i was waiting for this πŸ™‚ thank you! and please do add the DDL links ^^,

8. @nicky_008
Yeah tl is fine as usual of course! I had to add some decent size dither to the dark scenes because as it was it looked pretty bad and had banding and bad noise everywhere.
I’ve used variable dither size for different luma ranges to make it less visible in areas that didnt need it. Sort of like the way it’s done on films/blu-rays/dvds. Obviously it’s impossible to do exactly as that (otherwise it’d be great!) but it looks quite decent.
This is typically how the dark scenes look:

9. did you modify the script since i found some errors w/ it in the horrible subs release, such as spelling errors and inconsistent terms.
anyway, thanks a bunch, i couldn’t wait to rewatch it again in this orgasmic 720p encode. ^^

10. I didn’t notice any spelling errors but a few things were changed. Of course things like Victorique were changed to Victorica though!

11. darkHaruhi on January 25, 2011 at 6:32 am said:

Thanks so much for the release! I’m also glad I refreshed the page. Get to watch this before class tomorrow.

12. Roxanne in the last episodes is spelled as “Roxane” in this episode’s script.
and at one point, “hares” is changed to “rabbits.”

13. Roxanne is spelt as Roxane. That’s correct, or at least according to the writing on the letter in episode 2. The first episode was spelt as Roxanne, which we found out in episode 2 was wrong.
I noticed that one line about “rabbits”, I figured it was there for a reason. Raze didn’t fix it in QC so it probably was fine.
I’ll try and keep it as consistent as possible, but there will definitely be consistency fixes come mid-series batch, which will just be script fixes of course. Since I have the time to do encodes right, there will be no need for encode fixes in the batches.

14. waw…. new Gosick! πŸ˜€
i’ll download it when i back home…. πŸ˜›

15. MadBunny on January 25, 2011 at 7:18 am said:

bunny thank you!

16. Yeah, take your time with the encodes.
Downloading a v2 because of a wrong encode is always a drag.
But script changes can always be applied easily.
Anyway, thanks.

17. ImpRenji on January 25, 2011 at 9:54 am said:

Thx for this…..
And yeah a slow release is better than having to download a version 2

18. Yet another amazing ep
and yes, it seems like they are broadcasting (at that low bitrate) a fucking grainy-dithered blu-ray. SO it came out to be noise ?(???)?. The BD will be out on April (the month), so will you encode it too?
Great encode btw

19. thanks for the follow up.
just finished it, god, this show really deserves to be in HD, it’s very well detailed and you guys delivering it is a plus. thanks again.

20. Brixter on January 25, 2011 at 11:46 am said:

This episode doesn’t need re-encodes. It’s pretty already. It’s free, so might want to consider the encoder’s feeling as well. I appreciate this release, please keep up the good job.
P.S. If you want perfect perfect perfect release, wait for the BD. I’m out to bed~

21. @Brixter
Oh I am the encoder~ lol. So it’s cool!

22. Are you going to release BDs once it’s out?xD I love this show… ^^,

23. mabuharo on January 25, 2011 at 1:14 pm said:

thank you veryyyy much
i loooove this anime and the ED, OP as well

24. StubbsiBoy on January 25, 2011 at 1:26 pm said:

B Gata BD batch. Now please.

25. kojika on January 25, 2011 at 1:57 pm said:

Given all the suggestions for the ED karaoke, it’ll be fun to see what the official lyrics come up with. I have to say that, for me, “labyrinth’s emotional grieving” is probably the least convincing of all! πŸ™‚

26. Diogo4D on January 25, 2011 at 2:05 pm said:

Thanks ar, for everything!

27. lol~ I’m betting they’ll end up being something that nobody could have figured out!
Yeah that part isn’t very convincing but it sounds pretty cool :>> and fits the lyrics!
I’ve come across quite a few different random transliterations for that line around the net so might as well do something original (haha)!
Raze is quite busy at the moment so the batch will be done when he has time.

28. Thank you, as always.

29. Watched it again now since it would be horrible to not enjoy quality.
I’m a captive princess, doesn’t suit me, *bored sigh*
30. And a Marquis became a Duke in the next line…
Shouldn’t you correct at least this kind of mistakes when using CR’s script?

31. Alvord12 on January 25, 2011 at 4:50 pm said:

Hmm… I just happened to notice this; Last Week’s episode preview shows the name of the episode as ‘The Hares make a promise under the morning sun’ while this week’s episode is titled ‘The Hares break a promise at Daybreak’ Which one’s correct?

32. @kaze
Marquis pertains to Grevil while the Duke maybe pertains to their Father.

33. @ Alvord: “…make a promise…” is the correct title.
@ Zwei: Marquis is the correct term, it can be seen on the novels.
CR’s translator purposely* mistranslated this.
“koushaku” is marquis, but (if it’s been written with another kanji) it can be duke, too.
*He preferred to make only one sure mistake (than, eventually, two mistakes).
Hope my english is readable… -.-”

34. @Alvord12
The current one is correct.
???? (chouyou no shita) means Below Sunrise, “Under the Morning Sun” is one way to interpret it, but with the context of episode 3 “Daybreak” would be the better way to word it.
With regards to “Make a Promise” vs “Break a Promise”, ?????? (yakusoku wo kawasu) could mean either, it can also mean to Evade a Meeting/Engagement. With the context of this episode, ??? is most likely this (??) kawasu meaning to dodge/evade, of which the kanji is no longer in use.
There will probably be quite a few next episode titles that will be changed once their context is known the following episode, so let this be a forewarning. The episode titles don’t make a whole lot of sense without having context or having watched the following episode or two to understand them.
Marquis refers to Grevil. Duke refers to his father.
A Duke’s eldest son and his heir apparent (the successor of the title of Duke) is bestowed with the noble title of Marquis. The remaining male children use the title of Lord typically or Lady for the females.
Victorica explains Grevil is her brother (different mother), so she requires him (the Marquis) to obtain permission from her father (the Duke) to be able to leave her place of imprisonment.

35. Alvord12 on January 25, 2011 at 5:33 pm said:

Ok, that cleared things up. So, will you be putting up a patch for changing the Episode Previews or is it just better to leave them as they are?

36. @Alvord12
I won’t bother making patches just yet because there will probably be more changes to things as the series progresses and we learn more. When I do a mid series batch after episode 12, I’ll update all the scripts for consistency and release patches for each episode along with the batch based on what we know about everything at that point including names and such.

37. it’s still 100mb smaller than gg’s latest star driver encode, so it’s tolerable plus it’s worth it for Victorica lol. Thanks UTW

38. moefag on January 25, 2011 at 9:01 pm said:

Thanks again for your work, worth the wait.

39. Thanks again. Somehow it’s just really better all around when you guys do it.

Fuck yes. I love you… from my hear… nevermind im not doing this.

Hey guys, great job on this release. Really enjoyed it. There’s one thing I’d like to comment/point out to you guys. In the beginning of the ending theme song where it says ” Loneliness, find him back again/It seems to be like it never ends”, I think it’s saying “Loneliness, fighting back again/seems to be like it never ends”.
And also there’s the part of the “Labyrinth’s emotional grieving” a little bit later. I think it’s saying “Labyrinth’s emotional grief”.
Anyways, that’s all I wanted to say. Thanks again guys. Looking forward to episode 4.
P.S. I now there was a separate discussion concerning the lyrics, but I was already typing in this one when I realized that so my apologies.

42. Soukyuu on January 26, 2011 at 4:25 pm said:

@ar: do you plan to fix the honorifics inconsistence? ep1 has them sporadically, in ep2 and ep3 they’re gone completely

43. @bored-otaku
I’ll just make changes once the official lyrics come out now. Don’t want to keep changing them every episode. The last word it sounds like she sings out under her breathe.
I’ll fix everything come mid-series batch. I don’t really see the point of honorifics in this series since it’s not based in Japan and what’s worse is they use them randomly too. They aren’t consistent with how they use honorifics lol~
There also maybe another name change. Grevil -> Glaviel. I’m still undecided on this one but it appears thats how his name in correctly spelt in English.

Looks like you finally got the encoding just right, ar! I usually hate obvious and annoying artificially added noise, especially on a noisy source, but wow, somehow you hit the magic button here. So much less smearing, and you gave each scene the bitrate it deserves. A shame it cost you so much time and effort… Just make doubly sure to remember all your filters and settings for next time!!!
