    Been staring at Miyu’s eyes… They are… disconcerting if you stare long enough. Especially when the iris borders are not completely black and you stare into her pupils… Everyone’s pupils are a darker shade of their eye colour but Miyu has a black centre as well… Stare long enough and you notice she has evil eyes!

    No you can’t. I might consider doing the first two movies if and when Dynit release the blu-rays of them, but don’t really want to spend like a month encoding from the japanese blu-rays sorry.

    A little interesting fact:
    The long haired guy in red with the yellow scarf at the clock tower who explains the mission to Rin and Luvia in episode 2 is actually Waver Velvet (you know, from Fate/zero, ex master of Rider), know as El Melloi II. at the time of Fate/stay night. He is one of the allies of Shirou and Rin at the clock tower, also one of the lords and heir to the house of Archibald Keineth (ex master of Lancer from Fate/zero). Even tough he was kind of forced to marry in 😀

  32. Pacific on July 24, 2013 at 5:40 pm said:

    In your episode 3, Luvia’s “moment of judgement” is the wrong idiom. That “moment of truth” is correct in context. Alternately, Ala Atra Scans for the manga has “On the other hand… The precise timing you’d need to finish it off in one attack… Along with that split-second judgment. It clearly shows a difference.”
    I suppose there’s not much you can do about the multiverse-hopping gobbledygook, but I’ve a few suggestions. “Fixating center coordinates” sounds (see fixate) like psychobabble. Substitute “Fixing,” or perhaps try “Synchronizing coordinate origins.” Similarly “reflection path” works better than “reflective path.”
    I’m not sure “…imaginary numerical axis… instrumental variable” is more coherent than “…imaginary numeral parameters… restraint variable.” Perhaps substitute “instrumentation” then invert the subject and object, e.g. “Deleting the instrumentation’s (5-space) variables from the imaginary scalar axis,” with the parenthetical gloss being included when adding… to.
    Lastly, when Miyu is asked abut her new home, “I guess so” is implausible; “suppose so” is better.
    tl;dr
    …still better than Crunchy & Sons. Nice typesetting on your v1’s. My eyes demand I skip the v0’s & scanlations, though. @@

  33. Kazeto on July 24, 2013 at 6:51 pm said:

    @Pacific:
    “I guess so” is something that would be implausible had Miyu been a normal child. But considering how her childhood looked like in general (from what we got to know in the manga), I think she is more likely to use “I guess so” rather than “suppose so” – not having contact with any children her age, or possibly children in general, means she isn’t likely to use a more casual “suppose so”.
    Though I do see your point there. And I agree with the rest of your reply.

    @Komandos: Your mahou shoujo loli is just plugging numbers into a standard formula called ‘Volumes of Revolution’ or ‘spinners’ which lets you calculate volume under a line or curve spun around an axis. That’s a standard AP math equation that I’ve seen them stick on SATs. ^^

  35. Pacific on July 25, 2013 at 4:15 am said:

    @Kaezto,
    Thanks for the kind reply, and sorry for the wall of text. I suppose I should deign to join a group so I’d have a better venue to disgorge my critique.
    I re-watched the ending. Miyu entered the precipitated property without apparent confusion. She seems too erudite and forthright to misleadingly say she “guesses” this is her domicile—in reply to Ilya’s query—when she obviously knows it’s where she’s supposed to go. “I suppose so” is “used to express hesitant or reluctant agreement” (NOAD 3rd) which fits the context, if not what Miyu mumbled.
    If you want Miyu more formal, try “That’s… a fair surmise.” FWIW Ala Atra Scans has “Something like that” here.
    BTW, Doki apparently cribbed the UTW 2v0 for their release.They had “some secret bomb squad agent” who “diffuses [sic] bombs” also.

  36. Di Gi Kazune on July 25, 2013 at 2:58 pm said:

    @Kazeto
    You missed my exact point: Everyone else has double coloured eyes, ie darker centre surrounded by a lighter rim. Miyu’s is triple – darker centre surrounded by a black ring surrounded by the lighter rim. It makes it look like demon eyes. The best comparison would be it reminds me of Waruceid.

  37. Kazeto on July 25, 2013 at 4:37 pm said:

    @Pacific:
    Nah, I like walls of text. So don’t worry.
    And I do agree that they could go another route if they wanted to make it more “formal” without making it less fitting for the situation, but that is a conundrum you get when a character doesn’t speak the way you would expect them to. Though, once again, considering Miyu’s “childhood” I can see her using the “less fitting” version too – it’s not that her language is more formal because of her being highly educated, but rather because she has seldom any experience with really interacting with other people.
    Thus, no slang, no abbreviations for the sake of abbreviations, no “skipping” words, etc.. Which means “That is… a fair surmise” would be more accurate than “That’s… a fair surmise” – I do know it doesn’t appear to be that different, and it really isn’t, but there is a difference between those two which says something about the character of those who say the first one instead of shortening it.
    In the same vein, both “I guess so” and “suppose so” are supposed to mean something along the lines of “it’s not untrue, but I don’t care to talk about it with you” which means they do fit somewhat, albeit are not the best possible choices.
    Well, if it were up to me I’d translate it to “That is a way to put it” as it seems like something she could say in this situation.
    And then again, there is the question of whether she really considers the mansion to be her home or not, considering all we learn about her in the later “seasons”. Which brings us to the validity of the “I guess so” again – if she doesn’t, then it would be more fitting than it appears.
    @Di Gi Kazune:
    I haven’t really missed your point as much as tried to fit a spoiler into it. I was… tired at the time, which I guess is the foremost reason for it not being clear.
    So going at it again, it is true that her eyes are different, and it is likely used to make her appear “different” in whatever way. But if you know where to look (or “who to look at”) you will find out that her brother’s eyes are drawn differently too, and in a way which is similar to her eyes, only it is more subtle because of his eyes’ colouring.

  38. Pacific on July 26, 2013 at 5:25 am said:

    @Kazeto:
    I considered similar arguments. I felt “guess” had an undue connotation of unsupported speculation, but perhaps that’s just me. “I suppose that conforms” [to appearances and norms] is closer to what I meant with my insufficient “so,” but your “That is a way to put it” may be best.
    Yes, erudition and impropriety are no bar to using formal contractions, though I do concede that a cloistered multilinguist is unlikely accustomed to such usage.
    I see a couple of my suggestions were incorporated in Ep 02v1. Was that your doing?
    I still don’t like “magician” for “mahou tsukai” (魔法-使い, 魔法遣い?) because of its modern connotation, but magician [or witch] does appear correct. Conceivably, Rin’s explanatory scene could have had the term translated both ways, but Ilya’s vision-balloon conveyed the intended confusion anyway.
    tldr;
    Aargh! I can see why you might deserve those donations.
    If it’s not a spoiler, then does “Miyu-chan transferred back here from Finland” imply she was previously enrolled in Japan?

  39. Kazeto on July 26, 2013 at 2:58 pm said:

    @Pacific:
    To start with, no, it was definitely not my doing [that these changes were incorporated into v1]. I am not a part of this team and I converse with you simply because I like to talk. I do appreciate the thought though, even if it’s unlikely for me to ever be a part of this team (in a part because of time constrain.ts, and whatever other reasons are there need not be stated because my lack of time is a reason enough) – it really feels nice when someone thinks I am capable of being responsible for something good.
    That, and I too can see why they deserve those donations.
    Getting to the actual issues you are talking about, the “magician” for “mahou tsukai” one is a bit controversial, I do admit. Translated that way because it was the most accurate translation of this word, and yet the very fact that the word “magician” has more than one meaning in English renders it a bit weird.
    Personally I perceive it as an acceptable translation, but that is mostly because I am aware that trying to translate it in an unambiguous way is likely to end with a simple “magic user”, which isn’t at all incorrect but which gets changed to “magician” pretty quickly when using English language due to the fact that one of the definitions of a “magician” is a “user of magic” and therefore “magic user”. That is, unless they either create a whole new word for it just to have a “good” way to translate it (for which they would likely get chewed on by people), or translate it to “wizard” instead (which… somehow doesn’t fit at all). Thus, it ended up as “magician” with an unsaid “deal with it, people” added onto it.
    And now about your question about Miyu. A statement such as “Miyu-chan transferred back here from Finland” does imply that she was previously enrolled in Japan. But it does nothing more than imply, in this case to keep people from wondering why would her Japanese be fluent even though she lived outside of Japan. Which is in turn implied (that Miyu lived outside of Japan, that is) because Luvia did not want anyone to try to find the place where she lived previously.
    And that is because Luvia had to forge Miyu’s identity pretty much from the ground up as to the government the girl literally did not exist – do take note of the fact that the girl’s surname is “Edelfelt” even though that is Luvia’s name and she is in no way Luvia’s relative.
    Going further, I will say that it is very unlikely that Miyu ever was in Finland. In fact, it is very likely that she never was outside of the region which constitutes Japan. And yet she is from a very far away place.

    Those who can sub, those who can’t… post? 😉
    My day is likely less constrained than yours, so when I said I should deign to join, I meant get off my lazy ass (and get your mind out of the gutter, people).
    I mentioned “witch” as a TL, since it’s the official sub for Type-Moon’s Mahou Tsukai no Yoru “Witch on the Holy Night.” I doubt Rin would call herself “witch,” but Ilya might see herself as a fledgeling Glinda.
    On another note, why use an alien-sounding “Kaleid Stick” instead of the euphoniously intelligible neologism “Kaleidostick”? Although, I might have just gone with “Kaleidorod,” for “-rod’s” connotations of both power an humbleness, and screwed the listener.

  41. Di Gi Kazune on July 27, 2013 at 1:16 pm said:

    @Kazeto
    Thought you were tired or something. Onii-chans are always good value for money. And if you think about relationships in a tenuous way… That would make Miyu and Illya half-sisters.
    Augustus does excellent forgeries. Chloe von Einzbern is another example. So just like Taiga-sensei would say: Season 2! Season 2! Season 2!

  42. Kazeto on July 27, 2013 at 7:14 pm said:

    @Pacific:
    I think in this case it’s sort of context-sensitive, with it being translated to “witch” at that time because the main character of that story perceived “witch” as more fitting when talking about herself. But yeah, it’s still a bit weird.
    And the one about the “Kaleid Sticks”, here I think “Kaleidostick” is a good fit even if they haven’t used it for whatever reason, but “Kaleidorod” sounds a bit… inappropriate to me. I don’t really know why I find it to be inappropriate, but that’s the way it is.
    @Di Gi Kazune:
    Well, thanks for being understanding.
    And now that I think about it, yeah, it would make them half-sisters. And what is even sillier is the fact that Illya would be the “younger” sibling in this relationship too, the same way it happened with Kuro. Which would give us amusement and mental anguish to Illya if she ever learned about it (as it appears she wasn’t able to notice it when she talked with Miyu’s brother), but oh well.
    And the one with “Chloe von Einzbern”, well, it was really amusing that Kuro’s official name is rather similar, seeing her protests about it some time earlier.
    Though Augustus doesn’t simply make excellent forgeries. We can’t forget that he is also a ninja, or at least can appear on the scene like a ninja.
