After discussing the Kuro/Clo issue with the team, we’ve arrived at a solution which we believe should work for everyone.
Emotional episode is emotional.
Good call!

Yep, that solution works for me. Now to watch the episode and be ad that it wouldn’t actually be implemented.
I never got the whole “subs must work completely in English” argument. Like, would you translate “日本語で話してくれ。” as “Could you speak English?”. After all, the subs are in English, so how would speaking Japanese make any sense?
Even though people might not speak a lick of Japanese, they are cognizant of the audio and I personally believe that allowances can be made with regard to phonetic play on words, homophones and the like. Like “イクラはいくら?”. Translating it as “How much is that salmon?” might not bring the pun across within the context of the English subs, but the audio would make it pretty obvious that there should be a pun there.
With the whole Kuro/Chloe thing, anyone who even vocalized the two words should be able to put 2 and 2 together.
yeah, it’s the best thing to do
That is fucking genius.
“Like, would you translate “日本語で話してくれ。” as “Could you speak English?””
… Aksys Games did with Xblaze!
Thanks for the subs~
Brilliant!!
Looking at that pic and the fact that I don’t know kanji, leads me to conclude.That her name is “Bunny ears antenna fell off CRT TV” written in three year old.
Thanks for the release guys. And thanks for moon rune(ing), Perhaps if this keeps up fansubs will mutate into Japanese closed captions. They retain 100% of what is being spoken and in such a way as to not distort anything. YEAH, fuck English, I want my Chinese cartoons subbed in MOON RUNE.
So, it is Len or Ren?
レン obviously.
So it’s Sickle Cuts Wheat then. Or is it Nose Hair Falls Out.
Hell no woman! That is Eye of the Tiger!
That is just pure genius hahaha!!!
Using Katakana instead or Romaji
I also find this solution most satisfactory–the disgruntled masses of whiners are now disenfranchised while I have the opportunity to practice my Japanese reading skills.
Many thanks.
This is why I will always love UTW no matter how old I get.
Touché, gentlemen. I shall now proceed to YOROKOBE watching my chinese animeshon.
If I could +1 to blog post, this would get it.
lol
you guys were one of the top translate group on my list of anime translate group, but now you guy are at the bottom of that list.
@BeerWench damn, you are funny! lol
@774
> Like, would you translate “日本語で話してくれ。” as “Could you speak English?”. After all, the subs are in English, so how would speaking Japanese make any sense?
Random guy 1: “Blablablablabla!”
Random guy 2: “Would you mind saying it again, in English this time?”
How does that not make sense?
> Like “イクラはいくら?”. Translating it as “How much is that salmon?” might not bring the pun across within the context of the English subs, but the audio would make it pretty obvious that there should be a pun there.
And if someone can replace it with a pun that works in English and still makes sense in the context, why not?
> With the whole Kuro/Chloe thing, anyone who even vocalized the two words should be able to put 2 and 2 together.
Kuroe > Chloe
Sounds like a perfect match to me, and “Clo” as “Kuro” the short version of “Chloe”… Honestly, I don’t see a problem with that.
“Would you, Kisama, rather go along with keikaku and please all our nakama with fansubs as close to nihongo as is humanly aru?
Wouldn’t that be hontoni yabai?”
If I didn’t know a single word of Japanese, I wouldn’t understand what I just said above. And even if I understood Japanese perfectly, I’d hate having to read a line like that.
Thinks so too ~
Anyways… To those who are still complaining about the translation…
No one’s forcing you to watch UTW’s release! Its not even like this group’s tied you up to a chair and is forcing to watch their ( クロ )Kuroe > Chloe translations over and over again… (-‸ლ)
And with that solution… This grueling conflict is finally over! Everything’s well in this world!! (“⌒∇⌒”)
fotc, I still want to gift you a Vita and the Love Live! game so you can make me a bunch of videos while I patiently await for the (maybe never) translation of the game.
Guys that is awesome! Great solution! And you all are still my favorite subbers by far. I can’t justify watching HorribleSubs after the debacle with Manga Traders.
Well, that solution works for those of us who can read katakana.
Beyond that though, I think Kuro is the proper way to do it. She’s “Dark Ilya” and everywhere else I’ve seen it’s Kuro. I guess the best way to settle it would be to ask Nasu himself which one it should be.
Lol, you guys.
Thanks so much!
Also, seeing as how Ilya’s full name isn’t Japanese you could go the same route with her “twin” by going with “Chloe” … in the end, of course, it is all up to you
@drano:
“How does that not make sense?”
It works in a dub, but for a sub, they’re speaking God damn Japanese.
“And if someone can replace it with a pun that works in English and still makes sense in the context, why not?”
That’s a big IF. I’ve come across puns and wordplay that work splendidly in both languages. Other times, it’s usually a half-assed attempt that fails to go along with the context, especially when there are visual ques.
“Would you, Kisama, rather go along with keikaku and please all our nakama with fansubs as close to nihongo as is humanly aru?
Wouldn’t that be hontoni yabai?”
For the love of Christ almighty, could you people stop using such hyperbolic examples as a feeble attempt at a counterargument every time someone proposes a more literal translation? Is that what you think we want? It’s vile, it’s sickening, it’s childish.
Not an arrow loosed, javelin thrown, nor sword raised. None were needed. And this conflict continues…
fotc is so poetic!
The fake fotc, yes!
@774
> Is that what you think we want? It’s vile, it’s sickening, it’s childish.
M-kay, but complaining about a translation choice that is not yours to make, done for free by a group of volunteers, that’s not childish at all, huh?

[do your own translation]
[wait for official translation, incl. English dubs]
[learn Japanese and stop worrying about subs]
That should be plenty of options to choose from. Knock yourself out.
Oh yeah, this is WordPress. Fakes pop out luck mushrooms lol
What’s going on with Shinsekai BD’s?
@774
Localization Sucks =\
Great, how awesome is this? The Liberal Vs Literal debate AGAIN. How fun.
Frankly Liberal will always sound better to the overall majority of the target audience then Literal.
Of course this can be taken too far. Example : Ninja -> Shadow Person. This however can be remedied by remembering that proper and or unique names should not be translated.
Of course liberal translations will always hurt the leet fags “pridoh” But know what, go learn Japanese, rather then forcing English pretending to be Japanese down our throats. I don’t care if seeing random out of place Japanese words written in English makes you feel special. To most it’s annoying having to see “Ringo” in place of “Apple”
I don’t think that is a nice solution here. In addition to your translation skill, you should also have to improve your referencing skill. There are lots of information available on the internet. Just take some time with Google and you can find the information you need.
FYI, her proper name is Chloe she even have a profile here: http://waa.ai/4sQ5
Chloe is her official name and Kuro is her nickname. So just go with Kuro.
For me subs are a guide to understand what is being said. The translators find a way to rephrase the words to give them an accurate translation, since literal wording does not work on languages with different grammatical order.
People who’ve watched anime for some time can recognize words or phrases and work out in their heads whatever interpretation they like based in both subs and audio. As long as a general understanding is conveyed, nothing else should matter. Manga, light novels and visual novels give translators more to worry about if they want to keep the puns as natural and contextual as possible.
Names are especial in a way. How can you write a japanese name, like Sonoda Umi, in English subs? Using the Romanized Jap alphabet. However, western names differ, as for Claus, you can use the romanized Kurausu (? is that correct?) or the previously stated Claus. It does not matter as much as people here make it seem, and you can tell by audio that it refers to a name.
Try calling her “Black”, that may work and no one will complain.
That may not work this far into discussion(s) (;´ё`)アツイ…
I’ll simply wait for the eight card to appear containing the abilities of the servant from F/HA
Know you guys were probably asked this before but are you guys going to do Kyoukai no Kanata Special?
I remember when Commie subed Girls und Panzer, there was this debate on including some German word with the subtitle. Some like it, some don’t give a shit and of course there are those who downright disagree with the idea.
At the end. Commie included two sets of subtitles with their release, one that includes the German word and the other that is pure English. They were like, choose whichever that suit you. The argument stops then.
Just saying… Don’t gnaw at me…
@GeassGX
No we aren’t.
@L
I don’t like the idea of including two subtitle tracks, so it won’t happen.
@L :
You mean that this has now escalated to such an extent that they are their opponent’s carcass like dogs!?
That can’t be right… You guys just need to relieve pent-up stress or somethin’ or your performance will be affected in time…
Anyways… Back to doing stuff and be all busy-like 😀
Hmmm…. That word ” gnaw ” should be in there somewhere…
Funny that it isn’t… 🙂
What the hell have you all been smoking!!?
WHRE THE FUCK IS SAILOR ZOMBIE EPISODE 10?? I AM STILL WAITING….
The quoting is strong with fotc.
I knew I read that somewhere… http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=378433
The screenshot is a lie! Where is my クロ at?!
…/sarcasm
>The quoting is strong with fotc.
>I knew I read that somewhere… http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=378433
Far deeper then that actually, I recall reading those words in classic literature. Can’t recall where exactly but suffice it to say MtG got that from Shakespeare or some other similar dude. Whom most likely heard those words in some bar / pub / insert idea here.
Plagiarism, keeping old shit new, baby.
Quotes eh…?
“If I must die, I will encounter darkness as a bride, / And hug it in mine arms.”
—William Shakespeare, Measure for Measure
ね、 ね……。
And thus… Conflict seems to have ceased…
Let us now wait patiently for the next ep. ( ¬‿¬) …shall we?
BeerWench, I surrender.
Then lets celebrate, get drunk, run around naked and pass out. Then do it again!
Be careful not to smash stuff during your celebrations… 😉
B~SMASH!! 8)
