We went through like four typesetters, and it’s now about 14 hours since I woke up this morning to work on this. Yeuch.
Anyway, please enjoy this week’s second-hand embarrassment supreme!

    4000/14 = 285.7
That’s almost 300$ for each delayed hour. Sasuga, UTW.

I seriously hope you don’t use / will stop using words like “moesh!t” et al in your subs. It kills the mood. Don’t look down on Moe’. In spite of what personal feelings you may have, there’s no reason to interject that into the script. Chill out and just breathe.

Borat: So they should intentionally do inaccurate translations just so that you wouldn’t feel bad? Really now?

  21. Author on July 16, 2013 at 8:18 pm said:

Crude language was in the original manga too. And in fact competing fansubs diverged from the fine balance original creators used. For example, using “bimbos” and such for girls that Tomoko passes by in ep.1 (original ch.4 or about that). Now some of the inner city youth use worse every time they speak, as all know from e.g. Trayvon Martin deleted Twitter account. On the other hand, some kids are fairly delicate flowers in Borat’s style (not the Borat the Kazakh, obviously). But they basically mean the same thing, so what a translator to do?

  22. @Daiz:
don’t talk to 12-year-old kids who want English-Romaji instead of English-Subs. UTW’s subs are great because they are Liberal.
Liberal translations are the best since the whole idea of translation is to preserve the meaning and write it in English… proper english.
the only team that can sub Watamote is UTW. Deal with it.

    Mote.

    @ VEGETA:
Thank you very much for your opinion, which I find simply disgusting. UTW’s subs have always leaned more towards the literal side and it’s only with joints like these that they lean the other way.
Secondly, translations don’t have to be liberal for them to be in “proper english”. There’s no one ‘correct’ way to translate and it’s all about personal preference. Neither is better than the other as they both have their own pros and cons. If the translation’s too literal, you lose flow. If the translation’s too liberal, you lose accuracy. (Personally, I consider adding to the original text, something that overly liberal translators often do, to be bad form as the show should stand on its own merits.) In my opinion, the ideal would be a balance of both styles, which is difficult to achieve, but rewarding if executed correctly.
Note that this is a completely separate issue from localization, which is only for culturally insecure and ignorant plebeians.
Besides, until you figure out how capital letters work (or get a new keyboard with a functioning shift key), you should stop lecturing others on “proper english”.

    @Traac
If you don’t like it, go learn Japanese so you don’t have to use subs. Not that you should be criticizing the translation in the first place if you don’t know the language…

  26. Opinion is invalid.

    @ TRAAC IS A WEABOO:
No one’s opinion is invalid. My opinion that his opinion is disgusting is valid, which doesn’t make his opinion invalid. He’s free to make a counter-argument to try to convince me or attack my stance. In fact, you are free to do that too. Why not use your head for a change?

  28. ShuA on July 17, 2013 at 7:18 am said:

The only thing that ruins UTW sub on this ep is the use of the word of “moeshit” like Borat said it kills the mood. I’m sure there are better translation for that particular word. Too Liberal is not a good thing, trust me.
Guess I should use other group’s sub for this episode

  29. ergzay on July 17, 2013 at 9:14 am said:

What would you guys even suggest over moeshit? She used “moe buta anime”, moe-pig anime. I think thats pretty accurately moeshit… “moeshit” has the same usage in english as what she is using. Thus it is a direct translation, nothing was added or removed. Leaving it as romaji would be nonsense, translating it as moe-pig would be silly. UTW did a spot on job here. Stop complaining.

  30. Traac on July 17, 2013 at 9:56 am said:

If I might be so bold as to make a suggestion… How about ‘moeblob’? It’s a common enough term that brings forth the fatness of the ‘buta’ as well.

  31. Whats the point of this discussion? It got (properly) translated as moeshit, and thats not going to be changed. As ergzay explained, in this context, moeshit was the most accurate word they could have used. I’ll admit that I did raise an eyebrow when I saw it, because it didn’t flow particularly well, but its hardly “mood-breaking” and does not come close to warranting a v2, not even in the BD releases.
@Traac: Moeblob is usually used to describe characters that are moe to the point of being nothing BUT moe, and sometimes the anime that feature such characters. “Moe buta anime” carries a highly negative connotation, which moeblob just doesn’t convey accurately.

    > I seriously hope you donโ€™t use / will stop using words like โ€œmoesh!tโ€ et al in your subs. It kills the mood. Donโ€™t look down on Moeโ€™.
When people say “batshit crazy”, they aren’t really looking down on bats, you know?
Chill out and just breathe ๐Ÿ˜‰

  33. @Traac: As others told you, your opinion isn’t correct here.
And, UTW subs are in most cases are biased towards liberal side. This show is a good example of it, and I don’t know how did you figure out it’s literal.
This show can’t be subbed correctly without liberal translation… check some reviews and you will know that this sub got “A”, and others got lousy marks… quality of this sub is because it’s liberal. However, it’s not as liberal as “scriptwriting” as one would imagine.
about this moeshit, hmmm I didn’t hate it really… srsly, it’s cool because this is what people like her will speak. Surely there will be other proper words but this one is “fine”.
P.S: don’t get so mad when people say their opinion.

Personally, I don’t let others tell me what’s good and what’s bad – especially not a select few people on the internet that have decided that they are fit to be the moral authority on such things (worse are the people who agree with their assessments without question). This is an issue with every other type of review in the entertainment industry, but that’s another matter entirely.
Also, I apologize for lashing out at your opinion. It was uncalled for, but I really do feel strongly about fansubbing and the direction it’s been heading in these past few years.

  36. Shizuo on July 18, 2013 at 2:53 pm said:

    Thanks you!
    ๐Ÿ˜€

  37. @Traac: well, everyone has his own taste and that’s why there are other teams to sub this show (and other shows as well)… If you don’t like this pattern of translation, there’s another team with another method and so on.
    thank you.

is it just me, or is that fatguy riding a bicycle with tomoko a parody from Sakurasou’s Pet Girl?

  39. Drano on July 19, 2013 at 6:17 pm said:

    @kidlat020
    Possibly just you.
I don’t remember Sorata riding Aoyama or Shiina to school. The only bike-riding scene I remember, was that of Sorata helping Aoyama out by giving her a ride (on his friend’s bike) to the audition, when the trains were running late.
I don’t think that particular scene was parodying any show in particular, since similar scenes have happened in quite a number of manga/anime before.

  40. ^ It was parodying a scene from a Ghibli movie, apparently. Can’t remember the name of it though.
