Hi everybody.Β  I’m very excited to announce that we’ve finished the first Blu-Ray disc for Angel Beats!Β  We’re still hard at work on putting together a batch torrent as well, including re-encodes of key episodes, and re-edited scripts, so look forward to that.Β  In fact, you’ll probably notice some changes in these episodes compared to the originals as well.
The 1080p versions also contain a commentary audio track.Β  The 720p versions do not.
So without further ado, please enjoy your glorious HD Angel Beats!
P.S. Nikon insisted on that picture. >_>
ar-Edit:
31/07/2010 – I’ve started my preparation work for BD Volume 2. Which basically consists of splicing audio/video, mapping out chapters, creating 8593843 avs files and all that fun awesome business. I’ve done a quick pre-prep job for ep03 & ep04 scripts, so if all goes well I might have it ready mid-late week.
BD Volume 2 contents is the following:
– Episode 03
– Episode 03 Creditless Ending
– Episode 03 Next Ep Web Preview
– Episode 04
– Episode 04 Creditless Ending
– Episode 04 Next Ep Web Preview
I’ll be splicing the CDED and Web PV’s into both episodes, similar to what I did with Ep01+02 bonus features. There are no Creditless OP’s this time around, so they’ll be staying as Credit versions.

@aniluv….why? why? because YUI-NYAN IS MAI WAIFU !

  4. Ershin on July 7, 2010 at 4:56 am said:

We’ll be sure to include some pictures of the lovely Kanade for future releases. Not to worry. Knowing Japan’s propensity for releasing 2 episodes of anime onto a 25GB Blu-ray disc, we’ll have plenty of opportunities for additional pics.

  5. Yeah, what the hell is up with that 2 episode a BD bullshit? Anyway, thanks for the release guys. I also gotta admit the pic is pretty damn adorable and even better the second time >.>

Out of curiosity was there a clean opening and ending on the BD? Any chance of doing a release of them if there was?

  11. Lloyd on July 7, 2010 at 4:14 pm said:

Is there any difference in the Blue-Ray other than quality?

  12. PaleBlue on July 7, 2010 at 4:48 pm said:

@simonsayz: They decided to use FLAC for the audio encoding for their Angel Beats BDs. FLAC is nice because it is very high quality (pretty sure it’s lossless, but correct me if I’m wrong), but it also requires a fairly high bitrate on its own. If your computer was pushing its limits to play 1080p with a more compressed audio stream, FLAC might push it over the edge. You might also try just restarting your computer, or attempting to defrag the file. I was having playback problems a little while ago with something else that was 1080p+FLAC, and that fixed it.

  13. PaleBlue on July 7, 2010 at 4:54 pm said:

Oh yeah, and make sure you close all the other background programs (idle programs are ok). Many or all of the bits in your “bitrate” will pass through your processor at some point, so close anything that is constantly streaming data, like torrent downloads etc. Torrents also need to write their data to the hard drive, but in order to do so they need to use the read/write heads, which will cause your video stream to lose buffer time as the heads seek back and forth from writing torrents to reading your video.

@UTW: In Blu-ray releases, It should have some extras such as OP & ED with creditless, some previews, and some picture scans, shouldn’t it?
    I’m just wondering. ^_^
    Thanks for your releases. ^_^

  15. Onyxsyaoran on July 7, 2010 at 7:43 pm said:

Thanks for the release πŸ˜€ I just have 1 question, at the Preview scenes of the 720p version, was the tags of [c 8] and such, supposed to appear? I dunno looks weird, I know is just the pv, but I was just wondering, anyway awesome release, thanks a lot ^^

  16. Ershin on July 7, 2010 at 8:38 pm said:

Onyxsyaoran, assuming you’re talking about what I think you are, then tentatively yes. That’s a good question though, it didn’t even occur to me that we might take those out. As you probably remember, the previews were originally just voice and text, so those tags showed up right on the screen. But in this release, we’ve got the animated web previews, right? I guess you have a point that it would look a little bit odd there.
Well, just think of it as a little bit of nostalgic trivia! “Oh hey, so this was line 8!” >_>

  17. MikeP,
The creditless opening and ending were only for episode 2, and I spliced them into episode 2 πŸ™‚ Take a look and compare the OP for Episode 1 and Episode 2 πŸ™‚ Same goes for the web previews. I spliced them into Ep1 & 2.
    Onyxsyaoran,
That’s because I replaced the kana previews with the web previews. I left the codes for consistency sake mostly.

  18. Onyxsyaoran on July 7, 2010 at 10:52 pm said:

Oh, I see, I didn’t recalled the Tags, but watching a TV version preview made me remember them, thanks, nice detail then πŸ˜›

  19. I got the same as Simonsayz. im using k-lite codec pack. Somehow still cannot find one perfect combination of codec pack. help me, guys?

  20. nvm i think I found the answer: in ffdshow audio decoder, flac set to libavcodec, then it’ll work.

  21. rohal on July 7, 2010 at 11:21 pm said:

tested both versions on 3 different pcs with different players/configs: 720p runs on everything just fine (MPC-HC, WMP and VLC, and on that streaming box a friend lend me last week)
1080 will run on VLC with a litte preloading (2ghz core 2 duo) and almost instanly on everything above (i7 2.93ghz) as well on that box…,well WMP and WPC-HC wont load the video. Tested other vids with flac and 1080 – all working fine, vlc say bitrate of 1080 version is 23,97…

  22. Nick on July 8, 2010 at 2:42 am said:

Sweet! My hard drive fried last weekend so I lost everything on my laptop, including all ma Angel Beats. I’m curious, whats the difference between downloading this batch compared to separately downloading all the episodes again? Should I only DL this if I plan on burning it onto Blu-Ray?

  23. Ershin on July 8, 2010 at 7:22 am said:

Nick, this is not the batch. That’s still being worked on. This is episodes 1 and 2 from the Blu-ray disc, with updated scripts.
Once the batch IS out, the difference will be that several episodes were re-encoded, and minor script adjustments on all of the episodes. If you chose to separately download all of the episodes again, you’d be getting the original encodes and scripts.

  24. FLAC is a pain in the butt guys that’s why I don’t like using it for shows but since people requested it I guess I was swayed to do something nice.
If you have playback problems, disable the internal FLAC decoder in MPC-HC, and make sure ffdshow flac decoder is enabled. That usually fixes the problems. MPC-HC internal flac decoder is kinda broken.

  25. martinez on July 8, 2010 at 12:20 pm said:

    @ar…..don’t worry ….although it’s a pain for u…but we love it…so……move on, guys….

  26. @martinez,
Not really a pain for me at all, only pain is explaining to people how to get it to work right~! If flac worked without effort I’d be 100% for using it!

  27. Are either of the soundtracks 5.1?

  28. Nope. 2.0 only.

  29. rohal on July 8, 2010 at 9:49 pm said:

    @ar: thankyou its working fine
cpu test: after changing flac decoder in ffdshow cpu usage (on 2ghz core2dou)with backgroundprogs running (antivir, taskmanager:
    720p at 27-34%,
    1080 at 73-86% (peak)
well guess i learned a new thing and a hint or faq may help in future situation
    thanks

  30. That is one nice screen, I wished I had a HD Screen T.T!

This works. Wow, while playing 1080p my PC reaches a peak of 50% with Firefox, Antivirus, uTorrent and Task Manager open.
    Nice Work! πŸ˜€

  33. @Treyu
glad to help πŸ™‚ isn’t fun to have a life where all the movies/animes that you watch are all in FullHD? haha. Is there such thing as 1080p-addiction?

Lol, yeah there is such thing, I watch all my 1080p Anime on a 42′ FullHD LCD TV xD. (HDMI ROCKS!!!)

  36. magnilan on July 21, 2010 at 8:30 pm said:

Hi, I’m having some video issues with the show. Theres a distinct video lag at the end of the opening credits in both eps. Kind of like a slowdown, then the audio pauses to wait for the video to catch up. Same thing happens somewhere in the middle of eps 2. I also have this problem with Eva 2.22 at the 1:40:40 mark. Kind of odd since I don’t have any issues with other 1080p releases, even the Summer Wars release a while back were ok. I’m wondering, does anyone else have these issues? I’ve read of similar cases in these comments but they seem to be using lower end systems or incompatible codecs so I was hoping for some help considering I’m an amateur at this. BTW, I’m using an Intel Core2Quad with 4 gigs of ram. An ATI HD4870 512mb card with a Win 7 OS and the latest CCCP codec. Any help will be very appreciated. Thank You.
PS. When I turn the subs off, the video plays smoothly…..

  37. Spiller on July 22, 2010 at 2:29 pm said:

What’s going on in the commentary? It sounded like they where about to kill each other… (commentaries are pretty boring if you can’t understand them though so I don’t see much point in including them… But whatever, perhaps one day I can understand some of it πŸ˜‰ )
I’m not having any issues with playback at all with 1080p btw. I’m not bothering with closing programs and the like and even running both episodes at the same time seems not to give any issues and it is not like my computer is ΓΌber good or anything like that… (It is okay, it is just becoming a bit dated now…)

  38. @magnilan
All I can suggest is don’t use DirectVobSub for subtitle playback it’s horrrrribly slow and probably causes your lag. Just enable MPC-HC internal subtitle renderer and set buffer frames to > 0. It’s not “as” compatible with newer tags (ie quite a few don’t work at all like shear), but I tried to minimize use of post VSFilter 2.37 tags on typesetting cause of this so the signs and stuff display properly.

  39. http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=Beta_Testing_Guide
CCCP users should download and install the latest 2010-08-07 release, it has the latest MPC-HC 1.3.2212.0 & FFDShow 1.1.3526.0.

I’m having some lag issues at the end of both the opening and the ending of episode 1. Its the same issue magnilan has. I’m using the latest CCCP Codec 2010.10.10. Any help would be good, thanks.

  43. i had the same lag issues as SionEltnam and Magnilan just go to your vsfiler configuration the tab Misc and make sure Pre-buffer Subpictures is enabled it fixes alot of lag problems like the end of the opening and ending of angel beats or the title animation in nyan koi from (GG and CG) and also with Eva 2.22 somewhere near the end.
