Here’s the first half of the Haruka arc in fabulous Bluray quality!
To answer a few questions:

  • Yes, we are doing the Amagami SS BDs.
  • Yes, we will be doing the extra episodes in volume 13 (if I’m still fansubbing by then, that is)
  • Yes, we are awesome.

The slight delay was due to a tiny bunch of corrupted frames in the mt2s source for episode 1, necessitating a new source and re-encoding. The scripts have been re-edited by yours truly and should be even more lucid and smoother than before. Thanks go to ar for encoding and shifting, and XackPhair for supplying the BD source.
720p Release
* Video – CRF 16, 2-pass mixed
* Audio Track 1 – Main: AC3 2.0 320Kbps
* Audio Track 2 – Commentary: AC3 2.0 192Kbps
1080p Release
* Video – CRF 17, 2-pass mixed
* Audio Track 1 – Main: FLAC 2.0 16bit
* Audio Track 2 – Commentary: AC3 2.0 192Kbps
There were no extras. Next volume apparently comes with a no-credit OP and ED, so we might just release those as standalone files.
ar-Edit: I will be doing a re-encode for ep02 1080p since it seems it suffered as a result of the memory errors I think I just fixed properly! I’m doing another encode now, and I’ll check it thoroughly to make sure no blocks are present. The 720p of ep02 seems fine though, let me know if its not. My apologies, I thought I fixed the problem days back, but seems I hadn’t!

  1. @djah: FLAC being a waste of space is rather subjective in my opinion (I have seen page after page of quite vitriolic debate on BakaBT between people who think it makes no difference and those who *SWEAR* they can hear a difference), but what I really don’t get is AC3 being the alternative for 720p.
    I presume the commentary track was always AC3 and hasn’t been transcoded since it’s exactly the same for 720p and 1080p, but the main track definitely has been transcoded for 720p, and 320Kbps AC3 makes little sense to me as a transcoding choice. Wouldn’t AAC or Vorbis get the same quality at a lower bitrate? Or am I missing something?

  2. @Fred,
    commentary audio-track is like the seiyuus will comment on every pictures on the anime itself. Many BDs have it, as far as I know.

  3. @Fred: a track where people( creator, actors, etc.) usually talk about challenges they had while making the video or stuff like that.

  4. @Lillymon
    Let me know when the double blind test results come in for FLAC vs 320kbps *any lossless codec* making a difference. I don’t give a damn what anyone on BakaBT thinks. The audio community has known for years that encoding in FLAC is pointless unless you want a bit-perfect reproduction of the audio (not required 99.9999% of the time ever).
    And yeah, Vorbis would achieve the best compression most likely, but AC3 may have been on the source (as an alternative to the DTS-HD or what not).

  5. @Lillymon
    It’s true that AAC is a more “efficient” audio codec, and due to its specifications has become a standard choice for encoders today when dealing with lower bitrate audio. AAC’s efficiency thus makes it a prime choice with TV encodes and sometimes DVD encodes (though it’s more common to simply mux in the unaltered AC3 audio). However, at higher bitrates, the theoretical advantage AAC has over other audio codecs ceases to be significant at all, while a practical disadvantage does: the fact that there exist almost no receivers that can take full advantage of AAC audio, resulting in a significant decrease in audio quality. AC3, on the other hand, is widely compatible, and at 320kbps is comparable in quality to fully-decoded 320kbps AAC.
    It’s basically a toss-up between theory and practice. AAC theoretically is superior, but in practice suffers from incompatibility. AC3, on the other hand, is widely compatible, and the fact that at 320kbps AAC’s advantage over AC3 becomes insignificant (assuming your receiver can even fully decode AAC) led us to go with AC3. As for filesize, the AC3 track came out to be around 50MB in size, while 192kbps AAC, for example, would come out to be around ~30MB. An extra 20MB is a small price to pay for a more enjoyable experience, don’t you agree?
    Similarly, Vorbis’ advantages drop sharply with increasing bitrates. It all comes down to opinions in the end, as “audio quality” is subjective to begin with. Anyone who disagrees with us is welcome to transcode the lossless FLAC track we provide with the 1080p to the audio codec of your choice. =) The mkv container is flexible, so do what you will.

  6. Cool, i havent even started this series yet *deletes TV version*
    A lot of 1080P shit won’t play on my computer properly, but yours always do. I don’t know whether it has to do with typesetting or encoding, but keep up the good work.

  7. So I noticed this wasn’t changed for the BD release.
    Just to point out, Miya calls Jun’ichi “Nii-ni” (not a big difference from the current “Nii-nii” transliteration, but I thought I’d mention this). Take the advertisement text that appears at the midpoint eye-catch in episode 15 as proof, where the text is written as if it’s a message from Miya to Jun’ichi.
    Anyway, love the release and the hard work everyone at UTW puts into all of the releases. Love the duets as well… ;p
    Keep them coming!
    We consciously chose to use “Nii-nii” from the very beginning and we will stick to it. “Nii-ni” isn’t the only correct rendition.

  8. Another typo.
    @5:43, “Hikibi” should be “Hibiki”
    Also, on the 1080p of episode 2, there is some minor pixelation at 0:53, as well as major pixelation 47 seconds into the OP.

  9. @Perfect Chaos
    I didn’t see anything at or around 53 seconds, but you are right about the opening though. It starts at about 2:03.

  10. I had pixelation around the op for ep 2 around when Miya is trying to grab Sae. But I downloaded the file from lolipower ddl so I thought it might’ve been their uploading. Does the file from here do the same as well???

  11. @bakeacake
    heh “Nii-nii!”
    @sharm
    Nope, its just a small encode error, so you are fine. If you are in doubt, just do a CRC32 checksum calculation, so you know you have the full file. If there is a small difference in the file, the calculation will come out completely different from the one stated. In this case of the Amagami Ep2 1080p file, its 2cfa61f1.

  12. @[SIEGE] Xack The one at 0:53 is really minor, though. Should be around his tie, and only in between frame transitions does it appear (so you can’t pause right on one of the frames). It might be just me, but I can’t see what could make it have that problem on my end.
    @sharm I torrented it and, as I said early, I also have that problem.

  13. I think I only care about the Ai Blu-rays. o:
    But ow well.. I’ll just download the other blu-ray arcs as well.

  14. @tormaid
    I know Chihiro said the BDs are horribly interlaced, but that is completely wrong. I know this for a fact since I am the owner and source of these BDs. There is some aliased scenes in the intro and maybe even the ending. However, other than that, it is all peachy.

  15. Err sorry to be off topic but I’m having trouble downloading Angel Beats BD. Could you guys reseed the ep 3-4 torrent please??

  16. Oh darn, so this torrent also has pixelation probs? Wish I checked that comment before I finished downloading… So what’s gonna happen??

  17. Ok guys, I just checked out ep2 1080 and yeah I see the blocking. I know what the problem is.
    I just threw 8gb of ram in my system a week back, and seems like I’m still getting memory errors. Not sure if there is a bad stick, or my awesome DFI bios just being a fussy nigger. I’ll investigate, and see if I can resolve it with the 137437483 bios settings that I have at hand to adjust. Might take me a few days to do a re-encode of ep02 just to make sure its done right. Worse comes worse I’ll replace all the ram if it’s not bios setting related.
    So off I go to doing 37843843 hours of memtesting/linpacking and crashing my bios 193743 times!

  18. Fileserve 1080p DDLs are corrupted! I’ve downloaded 2 times and done CRC32 checksum(they’re correct) but MPC won’t open the mkvs (other mkv files in my computer play just fine). It’s a pain in the a** to have to download 1.3 gb 2 times!! Anyone else has th same problem? Can anyone pls up to RS or MU? Thks!

  19. Alright, I’m having trouble playing it. Updated my MPC and nothing changed. I wasted my last bandwidth to download this. So, solution?

  20. @rc
    This could also be a FLAC decoder problem. Have a look at your ffdshow audio decoder properties… if the FLAC decoder is set to disabled then try changing it to libavcodec.

  21. Alright, I forced it to open and I managed to catch a glimpse of it. The audio kinda out of sync and it kicked my player ass.

  22. I came across a weird issue with madFlac decoder in that the 1080p wouldn’t play back. Soon as I blocked it through external filters it was fine. So maybe if some of you guys have problems, make sure you’re not using madFlac decoder.

  23. @ar & kojika
    thanks, after changing FLAC in ffdshow audio to libavcodec & disabling madFLAC, MPC finally plays those stupid mkvs! This is the first time I run through this problem. Now get ready for the 3rd download! >.<

  24. Hey, I managed to play it now that I disabled it. But some weird sound is starting to creep me out. It sounds like someone is being interviewed. No, I’m positive I didn’t played any other video that time. And the sounds also stops when I stop the video. There were two sounds, one is that ‘interview’ and the other was that video itself, though it was way lower.

  25. @ aryle
    It sounds as though you are listening to the secondary Commentary track, with the Main track playing in the background.
    The Main track should play by default; however, try selecting ‘Navigate > Audio Language > Main’ in MPC.

  26. FFFFFUUUUUUUUUU- Damn, I love UTW. Thanks for doing these BD releases, and see you all tonight for Fatty’s arc.

  27. morishima and the nii-nii/nii-ni “debate” makes me want to cut myself….
    looking forward to the other arcs tho 🙂

  28. @aryle
    I’m not sure why it should be greyed-out like that… sorry my suggestion didn’t help. (I’m currently using MPC-HC v1.4.2677)

  29. thanks UTW for the BD release, but I won’t be downloading this since I see no reason to redownload only for higher quality. I watch Amagami SS for the stories so better pixels aren’t gonna do me any good.

  30. Is it just me or is episode 1 crashing other media players? The file doesn’t seem to open and the player stays stalled. -___-

  31. Volume 2 may have additional scenes not in the tv version. So I guess I’ll have to wait for them to come out before watching. Urgh.

  32. @.@ when just i finished downloaded the 1080 for 24 GB the ep 2 has problem with sub and the 2v2 lnk don’t have seeder, can any1 seed it?
