I see why they call her Rackage.

  12. I love UTW’s translations, so i’m happy it’s an original translation

  13. Kita ━━━━ (・∀・)━━━━!)
    Thanks! 😀

  14. >in case this matters to anyone, we’re going ahead with our own translations for this series.
So which translation did you guys use for the first two episodes? (assuming those weren’t your own translations)

  15. Kurini on April 21, 2013 at 11:14 pm said:

It wasn’t your own translation for the previous 2 episodes? :O
    I don’t mind though 🙂
    Thank you!

  16. >in case this matters to anyone, we’re going ahead with our own translations for this series.
Is this in reference to the “Yunboroid” vs. “Jumboroid” and “Ledo” vs. “Red” stuff?

  17. Xythar on April 21, 2013 at 11:56 pm said:

The first two episodes were translated by the same people who’ll be translating the rest. We mean that we’ll continue to translate the show instead of editing CR.
Terminology will remain the same as it has been.

  18. @ Sushi / Kurini
The first two episodes were also our translations, of course.

  19. hello !!! what font style is utw using ? when i convert the video to mp4 it turns to arial -.-… im using aegisub to edit the .ass file and i wanna know the font style used, especially in SAO

This anime! Loving it more and more! The first time in the history of Urobuchi Gen anime, no blood spilled in the 3rd episode. O_O
    Thanks, UTW!

  22. Oh boy. . . yet another case of mecha anime having holier-than-thou (NotQuite)Space! Pacifists. At first I was pleasantly surprised because their anger at Ledo’s action seemed to derive from “If you wipe out a raiding party, the main fleet might get pissed” instead of “killing is bad”. But alas it turns out it was a little of both but Amy and Bellows (the two most developed members of the Gargantia and thus the ones the viewers most empathize with right now) lay on the “Ape does not kill Ape” bullshit pretty thick. I would have no problem if the Gargantia were ACTUAL pacifists instead of the hypocritical mishmash that yells at Ledo for killing in their defense but half the command wants to drown him just so they can steal his stuff.
But this is still an Urobuchi story so I am anticipating mayhem, cynicism, and despair sooner or later. And perhaps that explains the cliched “good guy” mentality of the Gargantia crew: it will serve to even out the pessimism to come and keep the story from becoming needlessly GRIMDARK as Urobuchi’s other tales are. Still a great show, and I love that the Pirate Queen’s slave girls were actually willing henchmen all along (what do they get off on being chained to her throne looking miserable and moaning when she yanks on the collar? If so I eagerly await the doujins)

Last name of the end card artist is almost definitely ‘Shimotsuki’, not ‘Kiritsuki’. Just FYI.
    Thanks for the release!

That’s a really dark screencap. I can barely make out any details at all.
I guess I just have to focus on the important parts.

@shotcanis, I think it’s time to change your monitor. Get one with IPS or PVA panel. I had this problem on my old TN but now everything’s clear.
Thanks for the episode, really nice action from Ledo&Chamber. I hope Rackage joins the main cast soon.

Just a little note: HorribleSubs tells me the word lukkage, you use Rackage. Although i find your Rackage better, it would be nice to tell me what lukkage means.

  31. Just wanted to say I’m happy you’ll continue to translate this yourselves. I watched CR’s first and find yours to be way better. Thank you.

  32. olexijl on April 23, 2013 at 6:55 pm said:

@Pux: I download HorribleSubs as well here to compare. Except for the lack of quality (bad raws), their files are good translated as well.

  33. Drummin on April 23, 2013 at 7:50 pm said:

I still kind of shocked that the file sizes are as big as they are. For people worrying about storage space, you’re going to be better off DLing the files from DeadFish since they’re using the UTW-Vivid scripts and the files are about at least 100MB less than those found here.

  34. momomo on April 23, 2013 at 8:41 pm said:

I thought it sounded more like Ruggage (as in Luggage) or wreckage, both in jap. english.

  35. Xythar on April 23, 2013 at 9:51 pm said:

It’s ラケージ. You can romanise it either way and neither has any particular meaning – it’s just a name.
The file sizes are as big as they need to be to render this show acceptably in HD. I recommend downloading the 480ps if you’re low on storage space.

Drummin, don’t you consider your comment insulting to the UTW team? Comming to their boards and saying other groups’ releases are better? Even more when it is quite the opposite.
It surprises me how Xynthar kept his cool and replied to you so calmly.

  38. @neorok
What gives with creating your delusions towards Drummin comments? Peculiar you felt insulted for UTW. Strange. The guy probably wants a 720p ver instead of 480p could be why the mention of DeadFish.

Episodes 3, 4:58 Bellows explaining about killing, using ‘biggest taboo’.
Is that correct or did you take some liberties since it doesn’t make sense from what we’ve seen so far.
Gargantia’s crew seems to be ok with violence used for self defense. It definitely doesn’t look like they won’t even touch a gun to shoot someone as ‘biggest taboo’ would suggest.
I didn’t mean this as disrespect, and I’m grateful for your releases, just wanted some clarification.

Picked this show up on a whim, and because I can expect that UTW’s subs will be good per usual. I really like the thought put into the series, especially by including language drift (i.e. the Earth humans and Avalon humans speaking different languages because of centuries/millenia without contact).
I’m a little disappointed by other issues that haven’t been acknowledged in any way, like why Ledo’s immune system isn’t being hacked to pieces by the Earth environment, or how a pacifist culture like Gargantia’s arise in a resource-scarce, post-apocalyptic surrounding. I doubt these will get addressed, given that there’s only going to be 13 episodes, but I’d be stoked if they were.
    Thanks again, UTW!

Hi there, just dropping by to thank you guys for the release.
You guys did a great job, but I want your opinions on a couple of issues I had with some of the translations. This is my first time really examining the subtitles so I apologize for the nitpicking.
    Episode 3
0:46~0:56, 2:45: the word “eliminated” for me is about on par with “defeated”, and doesn’t convey the fact that every unit in the enemy forces was annihilated. 全滅 denotes complete annihilation. Especially at 2:45, when Ferrock exclaims his surprise over the manner in which the pirates were dealt with, “eliminated” does his incredulity no justice.
2:46 「船団どころか、あたしの船に乗り込んでた連中も全員さ」 was translated into “Their fleet was destroyed, and those who came on board my ship were vaporized.” Nowhere in the Japanese does it mention they were vaporized. I would translate this into “Their entire fleet, as well as those who came on board my ship.” as her response to the commodore.
2:58 「船団長、一刻も早く、あの少年を追放しなければ」 Instead of just “the boy cannot stay here”, perhaps “We should evict/get rid of him as soon as possible” would be more appropriate?
4:52 「敵の排除に理由が必要なのか」 We shouldn’t forget that whatever Chamber says at this point is supposed to sound stiff and unnatural. How about “Is a reason necessary for killing the enemy?”
5:00 「ここでは殺生は何よりも戒められている」 “taboo” is a bit heavy. “I don’t know about space, but here, more than anything we are against the destruction of life.” Why not just “murder”? Because the next question Ledo asks is why they are okay with killing and eating animals.
6:00 How’s “Give water to he who catches and brings you fish.”? もっとことわざっぽいな感じかな。
Again, no intention of hating, just curious about what you guys think or maybe why you would purposely go for more liberal translations.

  44. daisukiyaki on April 28, 2013 at 6:00 pm said:

Sankyuu for continuing your releases! I’m looking forward to ep 4…today? UTW always has high-quality projects, and I put you at the top of my preferred list along with only one other (with whom you share no projects).
@Zed: “what do they get off on being chained to her throne looking miserable and moaning when she yanks on the collar?” «« yes oh yes they do. not that i would know. i would prefer having Ledo all to myself.
@Drummin: The best answer I’ve ever read to complaints of large file size is Xythar’s at http://commiesubs.com/devil-survivor-2-the-animation-03/comment-page-1/#comment-146407. What you’re saying isn’t wrong, though, as long as you accept that you’ll lose a lot of quality with that reduction in file size.
@asa9ohan: I can’t speak for the awesome UTW team, but for myself, I usually prefer more liberal translations. I agree with you that 全滅 should probably be worded more strongly than “eliminated”, though. (“Eliminated” could be thought of as “driven back”, but “annihilated” as you suggest is much more permanent.) I tend to pick at nits too, so I can’t say too much about your particular suggestions, but I think mostly the translation works better _as a whole_ as it is, while your suggestions tend to be more focused on particular lines or words without considering how they feel in the greater context, so while it may be more correct in places, it also may be more jarring to read, for example, your suggestion for 2:46.
