At 6:57 “Clo, you were in the bath?” What?!? It should be “Kuro, you were in the bath?” or if you want to go with “pure English translation” it could as well as be “Black, you were in the bath?”
“Clo”… who the heck is Clo?!?

  9. I though at 2:21 Luvia called shiro’s name so it’s must be “Cha” from Charo rather than “She”

  11. Came here to ask if you guys got Chloe’s nickname translated right, but it looks like likeboobs answered that for me. Please, UTW, at least do a little bit of research into the manga to get some of the names right. It should be common knowledge for any long-time reader of Prisma Ilya to know that it’s Kuro, and not Clo. Hell, a previous episode already explained how Rin came about naming her Chloe from Kuro.

We have someone named North West thanks to the brains at Hollywood, what’s wrong with someone named “Black”? The fact remains that she is constantly being refered to as Kuro for several obvious reasons. If anyone’s racist,it is the writer of the manga.
Also, I recall at least two main heroines called “Shiro”. One of them being called that specifically because she was white-haired.

  21. Mirage on August 12, 2014 at 11:00 am said:

Also, I’m guessing you already stablished that you HAD to localize the nickname no matter what. This is basically the Sparky debate all over again.

  22. Sparky was genius, tho.

  23. No, we established that all of the staff working on the show came to the conclusion that using Kuro as her “NAME” was a bad idea because it’s not her name and it works horribly with Chloe (an actual name she gave herself.). Chloe becomes Clo (a cutesy nickname for Chloe) and thus it flows a lot better.
We chose the option that least offended all of the staff working on the show, and we felt was the best. There is nothing to debate here, unlike Sparky (was that even debatable?), because as both viewers (yes we watch stuff we sub) and subbers, we went in the direction we would expect other authors (idk, sub-making-people!) to have gone in too.
Crunchyroll went the whole Kuro -> Chloe route, and we personally felt it was horrible and not the direction we’d choose to go in this case, both as subbers and viewers.

You guy did great on all the series you did so far so i save all the series i interested from you guy so far…
but then this episode… when the ears heard the Japaneses and then recognized the sound as “kuro” but the eyes saw the English translate on screen as Clo… it was like a hammer smashed to my head. My sound and visual processing have to add one more filter processes to add “Kuro is Clo” every time Clo show up on screen while my ears heard Kuro…
and anime names have all kind of “color” for name like Aoi = blue, Midori = Green, Akari = red, Shiro = white, Kuro = black
and there are sh!t load of characters have Kuro in their name/nickname
so Kuro as Kuro is nothing weird or wrong or racist.

  27. Rokudaime on August 12, 2014 at 7:19 pm said:

    ^This.
A NAME or NICKNAME should never be localized! That’s just dumb. Either you translate it, or you keep it as is. I prefer the latter option whenever possible. If somebody refers to Kuro as Kuro, then that should be in the subs. If somebody refers to her as Chloe, then that should be in the subs. If somebody refers to her as Clo, then that should be in the subs. Having Clo in the subs when someone quite clearly calls her Kuro makes no sense! What drugs are you taking UTW!? ಠ_ಠ

  28. leo@uhw on August 12, 2014 at 7:45 pm said:

    That’s funny.
Do you also write English loanwords as “aidoru”, “aisu kurimu” and “kuristaru”?
Leave translation and localization to the guys who actually know what they’re talking about. Unlike you.

  29. Mirage on August 12, 2014 at 9:26 pm said:

  37. So you thought “Clo” is less offensive than “Kuro”? I’m offended you thought we’d buy that kind of bullshit. And Clo, a cutesy nickname for Chloe? What kind of reasoning is that? It’s pronounced practically the same, all you people are fooling is yourselves, because as everyone else here in the comments is demonstrating, they don’t buy it any more than I do.
Disappointing. Completely disappointing. All you’re doing is coasting along on this anime because you’re shutting down the group after it is over, aren’t you? Well, whatever. I can get subs just as accurate from HorribleSubs, in half the time and with less bullshit.

  38. Missing on August 14, 2014 at 6:57 am said:

    @R.D.
Since your saying Clo and Chloe are pronounced the same you obviously do not know you to pronounce words.

  39. Last I checked, “Clo” and “Chloe” aren’t practically the same at all. They share around 1.5 syllables at the start and that’s it. Chloe is roughly pronounced like “Kah-low-ee”, while Clo is a short and fast “Ka-lo”, which also happens to be pronounced relatively similar to “Kuro”.

  40. In the English language, which presumably everyone here is capable of reading and understanding, there’s a single syllable difference between Clo and Chloe when it comes to the pronunciation. Justify it through the Japanese language all you want, but calling Kuro “Clo” is still incorrect, and the reasons for the change on UTW’s whims is utter bull, and you all know it.

  41. Xythar on August 14, 2014 at 9:19 am said:

There’s only a single syllable’s difference between クロ and クロエ too. Not that I’ve even watched the show, but this discussion looks very odd to me.
Seems to me like translating クロ as a shortened version of クロエ is actually more faithful to the original language than translating it as a completely different word entirely.

  42. Could not care any less about them name(s)… Will just read official info. after all’s subbed and done… (^v^)

  43. clotest on August 14, 2014 at 1:40 pm said:

Clo sounds like a test Raze would order at medschool. A test for H. pylori and gastric ulcers and bleeding. *goes back to watching this bleeding argument* There’s a reason why she’s called Kuro and Chloe is a similar sounding proper Western name to go with von Einzbern.
For those that find it offensive, there is something called aegissub, mkvmerge and the mkvextractor. Get a hint.

  44. synced on August 15, 2014 at 6:34 pm said:

As a German, “Clo” sounds to me like “Klo”, the colloquial word for water closet… That’s not a cute nickname for a German girl. Well, whatever.
And actually, I thought it was Rin who started calling her Kuro, because she is the “dark/black” Ilya and there is a joke where Kuro complains she is not a cat, since Kuro seems to be a typical name for a cat. The dark Ilya then came up with “Chloe” at the end of the episode. That’s why I would find Kuro more correct.

  45. Xythar on August 15, 2014 at 8:46 pm said:

There’s no real “more correct” option because クロ essentially means *both* “Kuro” (as in Japanese for “black”) and “Clo” (as in “a shortened form of Chloe”). That’s the joke, that they start with the word for ‘black’ then add one syllable to it to make Chloe, and it doesn’t really work in English.
So either you lose the reference to ‘black’, or you lose the link to ‘Chloe’.

  46. Considering Chloe is only used a handful of times while Kuro is used 99% of the time it would make more sense (in my opinion) to preserve the name she actually uses rather than bending it around a name she doesn’t. Especially when doing so obviously goes against the author’s intent.

  47. Xythar on August 15, 2014 at 10:06 pm said:

    No, you don’t understand.
The name she actually uses is クロ, which is both the Japanese word for black (kuro) and a shortened form of “Chloe”.
You can either write it as “kuro” and preserve the “Japanese word for black” aspect (assuming your audience knows that), or you can write it as something like “Clo” and preserve the “shortened form of Chloe” aspect.
The actual name in Japanese is both of these things at once all the time.

  48. No I completely understand that. But we KNOW the name was given because of the black aspect, and Chloe was obviously a play on Kuro rather than the other way around, and Chloe is almost never used anyway.
Besides that, even without using Clo as the spelling the fact that Kuro sounds like Chloe is still apparent.

  49. Xythar on August 15, 2014 at 10:27 pm said:

It really isn’t, though. It’s impossible to see the link between Kuro and Chloe without Japanese knowledge, and given that the link between Kuro and “black” is also not obvious without Japanese knowledge, I can certainly understand why they did it the way they did. The current approach makes almost perfect sense in English (the crow thing is kind of a handwave, but beyond that…) and doesn’t require Japanese knowledge to understand. The tradeoff is that people who do understand the wordplay in Japanese feel like they’re being condescended to, but that’s life. Better that than having it make no sense at all, in my uninvolved opinion.

  50. “It’s impossible to see the link between Kuro and Chloe without Japanese knowledge”
Maybe on a technical level, but just saying them out loud or even hearing them in the anime gets the idea across.
And while we’re on the subject of UTW’s rewrite. In 4/5 she gives out a different name as her alias. ar even said it was a name she gave herself. But that’s not what happens in UTW’s version.
Again this is just my opinion. But I feel UTW gave up or ignored too much for the sake or preserving the connection to a name that’s almost never used.

  51. GenerlisimoTsundere on August 16, 2014 at 12:13 am said:

I like the use of Clo.
    Clo Cro Kuro Crow
All you really need to know to get this is. The Japanese like to pronounce “L” as “R” and vise versa , that’s more or less common knowledge.
It’s not hard to get that “Clo” works best.

  52. クロエ on August 16, 2014 at 6:49 am said:

FFS… in the written form she was called クロ. In the school introduction scene she called herself クロエ. Note the extra エ. And the IME dictionary keeps on suggesting Chloé for クロエ. She had just westernized her name so it make it fit with von Einzbern.
