So uh, here it is. First episode of Amagami SS. The first girl to be featured is Haruka Morishima.

This is probably the most, uh, non-standard-English script I’ve ever produced.  About halfway through I decided “Brother” wouldn’t do and reverted back to your favorite Japanese terms.  Anyway, a quick crash course on them:
-san (name suffix): indicates a little respect for who’s being referred to.  You can pretty much just ignore it.
-kun (name suffix): suffix used (in this case) for male classmates.
-chan (name suffix): diminutive name suffix, often used on kids/little girls/cute stuff/whatever.
-sempai (name suffix): indicates the other person to be one’s senior.
-sensei (name suffix): indicates the other person to be one’s teacher.
Onii-chan: a cute way of saying “Brother”.
Nii-nii: an even more ‘cute’ way of saying “Brother”.  In before “bro-bro”; honestly, who in the world says that?  >_>
I also seem to have a knack of picking shows with way too many lines.  This one didn’t have as much as BGata, but ~430 lines is no fun.

And lastly, I forgot to add fades for the English translated lines in the ED, which is horribly retarded of me because I somehow remembered to do it for the romaji lines.  It won’t happen again.

EDIT:: V2 released. New encode and new dialogue font. We’ve also fixed a few dumb mistakes such as edits on the second half not making it to the final release, and a couple careless mistranslations from our having rushed it the last time.

Thanks for the release. That’s the trouble with translating Japanese to English. Japanese is so formal depending on who is talking to who. It’s difficult to find an equivalent expression since modern English is so non-formal.

I think we would all prefer the onii-chan and such. Most anime fans are familiar with these terms, and if not they must become familiar some way why not through UTW. I approve this decision. Keep up the good work.

Just wanted to let you know that melon bread and anpan (bread with sweet bean paste) are not the same thing. I’m aware that it’s one small, trivial mistake with no impact on the story, but I figured I’d let you know anyways so you guys can become better translators in the future.

24. martinez on July 2, 2010 at 6:28 am said:

just leave it with japanese phrase…..it’s a lot cuter….;p

25. Ershin on July 2, 2010 at 7:10 am said:

Honeyboy, it was probably a mistake made due to rushing. You’re right that anpan and melon pan are two different (but equally delicious) treats, but I guarantee you Raze knew that already. Still, it’s something to note for an eventual fix in the batch. Thank you very much for pointing it out. I think we were a bit rushed today, just cause it was episode 1. Hopefully we can relax a bit more next week. ^_^
Also, I’m glad everyone seems to be on board with the Japanese phrasing. The way I see it, the kind of person who’s into imouto-kei probably would prefer Nii-nii, and the kind who doesn’t would find her obnoxious regardless. Might as well please the ones you have a chance with.

Your work is real good but…….
Am I only one think this show is so boring ?
Story go slow and plain. Nearly to Comedy but not, nearly to ecchi but still not and nearly to romance but also not.
More than that I think the male main character him self seem just a yasashii loser boring guy. Even there are many cute girls but seem they are have too light role (just cute but none interesting).
I not so sure this is what this show really is. Or It will be better in next episode.
Only one thing I am very confidently say is you UTW always good in graphic and translation. Thanks.

28. You could use the brother’s name instead of “onii-chan”, since that’s how siblings adress each other in the west.
I hate “onii-chan” with passion, it’s overused and cheesy. But that’s the Japanese’s fault… Weird culture.

29. Ershin on July 2, 2010 at 7:44 am said:

Moe. I say this with all due respect. You have your opinions, and I don’t mean to insult them by any means at all. But, that’s what dubs are for. Seriously. It’s no longer subbing if you fundamentally alter the meaning of what’s being said.

30. aniluv on July 2, 2010 at 7:51 am said:

Keep the culture, bring us the meaning to the conversations and signs. That’s all i need. Good work. Japanese culture is way deep.

31. @Ershin
Using the first name instead of “onii-chan” would be a translation and I don’t see how it would change the meaning.

32. Thanks for your work.
Now not that I don’t like it, but I would like to see entire anime about Ayatsuji Tsukasa.

33. Asai on July 2, 2010 at 8:22 am said:

Thanks for the subs 😉
I think that Nii-nii and onii-chan should be left without translation ^.^

34. Ershin on July 2, 2010 at 8:27 am said:

Moe, because it is not what is being said. If I called you “Admiral Moesingston the 3rd”, but it was written down by a translator that I had called you “Moe”, would you not agree that meaning had been lost in translation?
If a girl is very clearly and audibly saying “Nii-nii”, and it’s subtitled as “Junichi”, that isn’t a translation, it’s a lie. That’s why I said that what you are describing is more appropriate for a dub. Dubs are meant to be (to an extent) rewritten and localized for the target audience. Subs, substantially less so.
Anyway, if we’re not going to agree on this, that’s fine. I can respect that you have different tastes. Let’s leave it at that, though. I don’t wanna clutter up the comments overmuch, here.

35. sage1210 on July 2, 2010 at 8:29 am said:

@Moe
Call who older than you with some words like onii-san is very common for Asian people. More than that it also show how you respect to others.
But in opposite way, if you call some one just by his or her name is so rude for Asian people. Except you have very close relation with them.

36. anon on July 2, 2010 at 8:38 am said:

>You could use the brother’s name instead of “onii-chan”, since that’s how siblings adress each other in the west.
Sure, that is what you would need to do if you were translating a book for release in an English-speaking country, because that best considers your audience in that case. Book translations take a lot of liberty with the translation, which is unfortunate. But they need to do that for their audience to make sense of the story.
In this case however, the audience is a bunch of weeaboos from all over the world, who have no trouble understanding the various honorifics. Since the purpose of the sub is to allow us to understand the subject material, this translation (or choice not to translate) is fine.
On the other hand, I don’t mind at all if people change the forms of address, because the audio tells me what was originally said. In this respect, subtitling is fundamentally different from translating other works.
Given this, I agree that a partly localized translation is the best way to go. But I don’t mind leaving in honorifics either.
>Japanese culture is way deep.
Oh you.

41. @QQ: However that’s how the kana is pronounced (!), not how it should be romanized. Using the Hepburn-system it should be Senpai with an N.

Let’s say Person X has 2 brothers and calls out ‘onii-chan’.
Let’s say Brother A responds and the translator uses his name. But then 3 episodes later it’s being revealed that Person X actually meant Brother B.
If you would have used ‘brother’ or ‘onii-chan’, episode X and X+3 would make sense. But if you have used either of their names one of the episodes wouldn’t make sense.
Or even better:
There is a person who is only being called ‘onii-chan’ and only at the end his name will be revealed…or not even then.
And then there are of course those kids who call other strangers onii-chan/onee-chan and some translate that to Mister/Miss. What if it turns out that that kid was actually family-related and really did mean brother/sister?
Anyway, I know these cases are maybe a bit far fetched, but they could still happen…or not.
What I want to say is, that translating ‘onii-chan’ into a name is like making up a story, unless you’re actually the one who wrote that story.

48. Lloyd,
That’s some xvid made off our mkv I assume. We’ll have an xvid coming today sometime I hope. I’m trying to work out the cleanest way to deal with the stream’s banding right now and I’m doing another test encode to lossless and I’ll see how it turns out. If it’s good I’ll go from there. I didn’t encode the original one so this is my own encode I’m messing with.

Thanks for the release! I’ve decided to follow your subs not only because you were the first one to release, but it’s actually pretty good =)
My only gripe is the use of “sempai” rather than “senpai”
Sure it might be how people would pronounce it as the “n”/”m” comes before the bilabial “p”, however it’s written as ”????”
Similar to how “tomato” spelled “tomato” yet we don’t spell it as “tomayto” or “tomahto” as people would pronounce it…
hopefully you’ll consider changing it, but other than that, I’m happy with the release! Thanks again

As long as these 2 positions stay with the same people, there’s no reason to switch to Eclipse.
By the way, was I misinformed or did Eclipse lost one of their member and switched one of gg’s in?

Okay, now I know that it’s cool and all to talk shit about gg and say they over-localize, etc., but seriously, like, go fuck yourself, ‘kay? midsummer is a fine translator and very nice person, and it’s ridiculous to blame someone for doing something solely based on what groups they’ve been in previously. Also, I’m assuming that the translator that Eclipse “lost” that you’re talking about is koki, who technically is still working on FMAB, so they haven’t really lost him yet… oh and by the way, he was part of gg before too. Oh, and I almost forgot, Raze was in gg before too. I sure hope he doesn’t start localizing all the scripts up! And trolling them too!
P.S. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of localization if it’s done well, and Eclipse is doing a good job with this show so far.
P.P.S. GG was the best fansub group to ever roam the internet.

I apologize for my maybe harsh comment, but I never said anything negative about Eclipse or their translator/editor. Since someone MUST be responsible for the localization (and gg was quite famous for theirs) I made that (and I have to admit) stupid and biased statement. I apologize if I’ve offended Eclipse’s translator and/or editor.
‘P.S. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of localization if it’s done well, and Eclipse is doing a good job with this show so far.’
Absolutely right, but since localizations are usually a matter of preference, I prefer UTW.
I have to think about Frostii’s Durarara, which I personally didn’t like exactly bacause of too heavy localization…to each his own I guess…
‘Beside, they’ve already proven what they’re made of over their five years of existence with about 600 high quality releases…’
There is no relation between experience and quality. Just because UTW is a new formed group, doesn’t mean that they can’t do an equally good (or maybe even better) job than an older and more experienced group.
I guess that is exactly what IGChris wanted to say: Make your judgment of someone’s current work and not of their previous work (again apologies for my previous stupid and biased statement).

At least you guys are reliable in the fact you make releases quickly after the episode release, and not going against your name (Eclipse is supposedly a speed-subber and yet they’re going rather slow on Kaichou wa Maid-sama).
You may make V2s and all but, it’s mostly only little mistakes here and there, not something that I personally feel distracts me, I’m not all that picky when it comes to subs.

85. “Comment: New encode and default style.? It’s unfortunate we’re competing with Eclipse, but we respect each other’s work, and both ask to keep the hating to a minimum.? Here’s to a fair rivalry!”
Nice to see that some people still care about politeness. It’s sad how many ungrateful watchers go so far as to call a release “shit” merely because of some minor mistakes (if there are any) even though the group put so much work into it. Sadly, these won’t follow the example of the group they are defending, since I’ve rarely witnessed a group bashing an other themselves, and start the “war” on their own, as it’s already the case with you and Eclipse.

Guys, it’s fantastic that you’re sticking with us, and we can’t thank you enough for your interest in our releases (I mean it. We’re absolutely thrilled by the support), but there’s no need to flame Eclipse (or us >_>). We’d like to keep things nice and amicable. We’re all just doing this because we enjoy it, so let’s not complicate things.

There are some problems with the kanji typesetting.

And there is nothing really wrong with this one, but isn’t it a bit weird that the kanji goes all the way down, when there is room on top (the unevenness)

Meh, I’ll stick with you guys. You’re my FAKKU friends, I can’t ditch you! Right hand bond brothers ftw! Anyway series is alright, I just get annoyed at
Typical spineless Japanese pussy high school boys. I mean really, grow some balls man.
Hopefully this will change as the series progresses.

94. Rizaria,
Yes the ass is v2, but it might not line up perfectly timing wise. Actually it’ll be out be a frame or so at most parts. I had to retime the original script for the v2 encode which I did. Our other encoder did the original and he was too busy to do another.
Jukey,
The avi is based off a v1.5 script, so it has some fixes not all. Raze was rushing me to get an avi done and so we did it before the final changes for the v2 were even done.

95. still don’t get this story though…

96. Bro-bro, fight thuh powah~.

cold…..cold…..i’m feeling cold….i pity him

98. “Nii-Nii” could be “Big-Bro”, since he’s older and people do say “Big-Bro”.
You don’t lose much cuteness either.

99. Mentar on July 4, 2010 at 6:07 pm said:

Mentar from Eclipse here.
I’d like to stress that what Raze wrote on Tokyotosho was entirely correct. Personally, I felt that the UTW release was admirable, especially taking into consideration that it was released in only a few hours. There were a small number of TL glitches (no wonder due to the speed, and they’ll be fixed in the v2s), but overall, it was a polished, and very nice release.
What I find regrettable and annoying is the mutual flamewar that flared up immediately, with fans on both sides dissing the efforts of the other group in nasty derogatory ways. This is exceptionally disrespectful to all fansubbers putting in effort for all fans, especially when it’s not warranted. Instead, it makes fansubbers wonder if working on anime is even worth it.
So, I’d kindly ask UTW and Eclipse fans to stop with this sad badmouthing. Pick the version you feel more comfortable with and enjoy it. But please no flamewars for the sake of the group of your choice. You’re not doing them a favor.
Thank you 🙂

Guys…
We enjoyed anime here not to badmouthing to fansub whose subbed it, you do had a choice to choose between them, just picked which one you like, and be grateful without them we won’t see any anime with english sub.
PS.Big thumbs for Raze and Mentar to do their best to stop this flame.

Eclipse has subs that are better meant to be spoken. And UTW has subs that are meant to be read. I liked the UTW subs up until the halfway point. Then i just prefered Eclipse from there on. very wierd. UTW also has dual titles for when someone talks over each other. biggest difference is that eclipse like to put 2 sentences into one line. sometimes it work. most of the time it doesn’t. the UTW subs go by too fast sometimes. but they do hold suspense and the sense of timing is better.
All in All I think I am going with UTW with this one. I got my fill of Razes work during FMA:B and I preferred Eclipse with it. I don’t like that theres patches but it worth maintaining for UTW right now. And of course. Speed.

Just wanted to say thank you to Raze and the rest of UTW. Great show. I even watched V1 and didn’t find anything egregiously bad… I thought the translation was really natural and well done. All in all, nice premise, interesting format for a show, and really nice character designs. Thanks again for your hard work, and I sure hope this one gets a blu-ray release. It deserves it.
