Apologies for what has been the longest weekly TV release delay in the history of UTW. For those of you who patiently waited for our version, the wait is finally over; please enjoy. For those of you who didn’t, we understand why you’d turn to other sources. Amagami SS withdrawal symptoms are surprisingly severe.
A rough timeline of the delay if you’re interested:
11/18: We grabbed EF’s cap of Amagami SS 20 (yes, we have been (relatively) unaffected by all the drama) and discover the first part of it to be corrupted. We decided to work on it anyway and hoped a Share/PD raw would show up before we all went to bed. It did not.
11/19: A few Share/PD raws popped up overnight, but ar had work, and I had Index II to work on. ar encoded a v0 raw using the intact parts of the transport stream and a PD raw, and I went to bed leaving Kusion to time the script, who agreed to do it even though he had to leave early next morning for a weekend trip with his buddies to NY.
11/20: Turns out Kusion only managed to time 16 minutes of dialogue before fatigue got the better of him. Nikon jumps in to time the rest of the dialogue, fnord begins typesetting, and I begin editing. During this time, a fresh transport stream appears on Share which begins downloading at good speeds. This, compounded with the fact that someone else had already released a subbed version of this episode (and therefore provided those of you who are desperate with an alternative), we decided to forgo releasing a v0 and to wait for the transport stream to finish downloading. A few more hours couldn’t hurt, right? Turns out the download stalled at 92% for the whole evening…
11/21: …all the way until the afternoon of the next day, right after ar went to bed. ar took the day off but had an appointment in the morning. By the time the final encode was finished and uploaded, it was already past midnight where I am.
This whole ordeal is something none of us want to happen again. To this end, I would like to ask anyone out there who enjoys our releases and is willing and able to provide us with backup transport stream caps (note: not PD/Share raws) to contact me (Raze) on our IRC channel. If you are willing to help but don’t have capping equipment, I am willing to provide them if certain conditions are met; to begin with, you should be situated in Tokyo, Japan, be able to receive TV, and have a fast upload speed.
New poll for the Rihoko arc, and see you on Thursday for the first episode of Queen Tsukasa’s arc! As for this episode, it is without doubt one of the most emotional in the whole series. Not too sure I like how it ended, though…

Finally, Rihoko arc finished. Great arc by the way, don’t really get what all the rage is about (it’s all about NOM NOM NOM on all sorts of delicious food).
I still don’t get all this wanking on transport streams. For fuck’s sake, grab a decent share raw and work with that, why bother with the monstrosity of 4gb streams of a 23 minute show? Pretty sure you can get it out just as fast and no one would notice the difference anyway.

45. thanks for the release. i saw raw version already, and the episode was warm, but i am not entirely satisfied with the way it ended. but the previous episodes gave glimpses that he started to see rihoko differently, so it will get to him eventually, which makes it all nice. a very innocent arc, i would say.
next arc, ayatsuji arc, and i can’t wait! keep up the good work, and good to know that you guys have access to EF’s ts. but regardless, we wouldn’t mind to see your releases with PD/Share-raws, since they cant be that horrible. thanks again and keep up the awesome work!

46. @Maceart
You mightn’t care, but we do. Share raws are generally painful to work with for everybody in the subbing process. Decent ones don’t appear most of the time until 2-3 days after airing. We will use share/pd raws if we’ve exhausted other options or we know there is no choice.
Quality is first and foremost and if it’s possible to do in a speedy manner we’ll do it. If not then we won’t. Doing the job twice because of poorly encoded p2p raws (for the timer/typesetter/qc’er/etc) is stupid and a waste of our time.
tl;dr
You get your anime fast if and only if we don’t want to slash our wrists in the process of getting you it. Otherwise you wait like a normal person and accept that it comes when it comes. Alternatively, learn Japanese and let no subbing group delays hold back your anime viewing experience 🙂

@ar
I’m pretty sure say-move.org has a raw for amagami up around 3-6 hours after the airing time. If you guys really wanted speed, have the translator translate off that, then wait for a decent shareraw to time off of, then bam! you have a release.
Who said anything about doing a job twice? A 720p raw is a 720p raw. Encoded video will lose quality no matter what you do with it anyway.
As an example, I took a screenshot of UTW and Grunnur’s 720p release. PNG, so no compression here. Since it’s a still image, if you sit and stare long enough you can see that Grunnur’s release is has slightly less contrast, and the teacher’s clothes are a little bit more pixellated. But seriously? 2 day’s wait between these two (and Grunnur’s filesize is even smaller than UTW’s) just for this minute of a difference that pretty much no one would care about (and these differences are even harder to see while the video is in motion).
http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/4868/utwvsgrunnur.png
TL:DR – Not being able to sub due to no TS is quite a strange excuse to me.

For example, say-move.org had Amagami episode 20 raw up on the 19th at 3AM, which was around 3 hours after the episode aired. That’s still plenty fast and enough to translate from.

54. >>Release gets delayed
No problem guys, I like your releases so I can patiently wait.
>>Rihoko gets no real conclusion to her arc and we don’t get to see her with Junichi as a rabu-rabu couple
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
I MAD. I FAKKEN MAD.

55. @Maceart
We did translate from say-move 🙂 We had the translation done same day but since we ran into release problems and not even one raw appeared on share/pd until the next day, we decided to hold off the release until a share raw appeared that we were satisfied with. We were actually going to release a v0 on Saturday but due to index 2 keeping other staff busy, by the time we got around to it on Sunday a .ts appeared so we waited patiently so we could encode the raw ourselves (to our own standards).
We didn’t release a same day speedsub so we decided to hold off the release until after Index II. Even though we have nobody to answer to for when our subs are released, we still release when we feel we are ready to and if everybody is busy that means it’ll be done when it’s done. Not everybody sits around on a computer doing fansubs day/night.
For Amagami I take fridays off work to encode it, and if for some reason it can’t be done on a friday, then there is a delay until later in the weekend or early week when I have time, along with the others involved too. I generally work on a Saturday to make up for my bludging Fridays. So other than Friday I don’t have time until Sunday to work on a project. Raze and others don’t either.
That’s exactly why we delayed it because we were all busy with other things. That’s just how it is, and if a .ts shows up while we can’t work on it we will delay until we have it to work with.

56. Thanks for your hard work ! ^^

57. Some minor errors, for batch or BD releases:
Dialogue: 3,0:10:26.47,0:10:29.48,Default,,0000,0000,0000,,All right! I gonna put everything on mine!
Should be “I’m gonna”
Dialogue: 3,0:11:46.82,0:11:49.07,Default,,0000,0000,0000,,What exactly is Rihoko to you?
A consistency thing. She says Rihocchi, and since the other lines where she says Rihocchi was subbed as Rihocchi…
Thank you.

58. I for one,(and I’m sure the vast majority of the UTW support community will agree with me) would prefer to succumb to the withdrawal rather than suffer the bleeding from the eyes of having to watch a trash quality share/PD. ESPECIALLY when if we had waited a day or so longer, we could have had a perfectly good .ts encode.
That, and ar never said they couldn’t SUB the show. Just that the release was delayed due to not having a .ts or serviceable raw to work from.

This show is one of my favorites. Because of the delay, I downloaded Gunnur’s release and watched it. I kept checking the UTW site and today downloaded the UTW release and watched it. It was like watching a different show. The OP and ED really set the mood of this show, and a serious drawback to Gunnur’s release (IMHO) was their failure to translate the lyrics. There was also enough difference in Gunnur’s translation and timing to seriously dull the impact. Without a doubt the UTW release produced the solid emotional impact intended by the makers of the anime. UTW’s release had better timing, and AFAIK, a much clearer video image.
The ending. Well, a distressingly (for this occidental, anyway) characteristic of Japanese anime is the all too familiar muddy/obscure ending. In the the final festival scene in this episode, the clothing, the way Junichi and Rihoko interacted under an iconic deluge of falling cherry blossom left the distinct impression that the two were “married” – or at least much closer. The key lead-in was the last part of the scene in which Junichi says: “Senpai, leave the Tea Club and Rihoko to me and graduate with no worries.” Rihoko’s reaction was that she clearly understood Junichi’s strong commitment to her. I think the ending is strong, if subtle.
I lived not far from Sapporo for about two years and ended up gaining a good understanding of how indirect the Japanese language can be. It was the first time I had observed native speakers using writing to supplement communication in face-to-face dialogue. By the way, this is NOT a criticism – simply a recognition of how strongly the Japanese language and culture are linked.
UTW provides consistently excellent releases, and I would wish to extend to its members a sincere “head rub” and a commendation for consistently exceptional “good work.” Thank you very much!

61. thanks! i waited for your release. 🙂

69. Thanks, I waited for this, and don’t worry Index for me has priority over this arc of amagami xD
Good job guys.

70. @ Maceart
Your comments show an almost amusing lack of understanding as to how the subbing process works, but I’ll take some time to clarify a few things.
>I’m pretty sure say-move.org has a raw for amagami up around 3-6 hours after the airing time
Much less than 3 hours, actually. Which speedsub group nowadays doesn’t rely on Saymove for translation raws? Like ar said, we had the translation done on schedule (~4pm EST, a little over an hour after it appeared on Saymove). It’s almost as if you didn’t read what I had to say about the delay, but to clarify: we were willing and going to release a v0 using a Share/PD raw the same day if it appeared before we all went to bed. It did not.
>Who said anything about doing a job twice? A 720p raw is a 720p raw. Encoded video will lose quality no matter what you do with it anyway.
Negative. The script itself may not change, but minor differences in how raw video is processed from encode to encode leads to frame differences that will throw the timing/typesetting in the releases off. ar was not exaggerating when he said that we’d have to do the same job twice, as it is necessary for the timer/typesetter/QC to do another pass to fix things. That is why BD work is a real pain; it’s not as simple as just shifting the script. You also have to check it, and this is where the effort is.
>Grunnur’s video not being much worse than ours
Again, it seems like you didn’t care to read what I had to say about the delay, but a big part of our decision not to release a v0 on Saturday was because you guys had an alternative through them. And if their version was perfectly fine, then maybe that decision was not so bad after all.
ar also makes a very good point about how we are not, nor are we obligated to, spend the entire day in front of our computers subbing anime for you. We have our own lives to lead, and that is why setbacks like this are very severe because they throw our scheduling off completely. Staff members of a project have kindly dedicated specific times of the week to do this for you, and when things like this happen we will not skip work or school/change our plans/lose sleep to make up for lost time. And really, it’s not like we didn’t try our best to get this out as soon as possible.
I’d also like to end by pointing out a major reason why we use transport streams (apart from getting good encodes): we save time. Share/PD raws do not appear right after airing; the availability of .ts raws less than an hour after airing ends is actually a huge speed boost. We make a workraw from it which allows us to work our magic while the final raw encodes, well before other raws even appear. With a Share/PD raw? We’d have to wait for it to appear and then download it before we can even move on to the timing stage.

71. If you were disappointed like I was. Take a look at this and get the ending we all really wanted.

72. RuisuKun on November 22, 2010 at 3:28 pm said:

Thanks for the ep, the ordeal isn´t a big deal for me since your ver is the better out there & the only one that is at the same level of the perished eclipse. I wish you guys the better of luck & I’ll be supporting by seeding as every week.
See ya!

73. Lol, if your a typesetter/timer, you’ll know that frames differ between raws. With h264, you can’t simply tell aegisub to “snap lines to keyframes” and hope all “line bleeds” are fixed. WHICH LITERALLY MEANS DOUBLE WORK. You have to go through each line to check for line bleeds (a line appears a frame too early/late, or disappears too early/late). Re-doing timing is never fun. And no, watching the video doesn’t catch all of the scene bleeds.
And seriously. We have LIVES too. If fansubbing is delayed or something, we can’t just pull an over-nighter and go off to work with no sleep. We’d lose our jobs if we’re in a meeting and we’re doing the “head bob dance” and falling asleep. NO JOB = no fansubbing. Fansubbing is cool and all, but not if you aren’t making ends meet in real life. Same with our schedule. Obviously we’re not going to cancel going to a birthday party or some other stuff we’ve already planned for.

74. It seems even hitler had trouble with the ending

I personally chose to wait, I feel it’s a way of showing appreciation to wait loyally until your version is done. To me, knowing the sub group is enjoying the show makes me enjoy it more too. Things like the song dub of the previous ED make UTW my favourite fansub group, on top of decent translation and timing you can really feel that they still genuinely enjoy anime.

http://www.mangafox.com/manga/amagami_precious_diary/v02/c016.7/ (best ending ever)

94. Thanks for the release guys. I know it’s a lot of work to balance fansubbing and real life stuff. Especially when you don’t get that much appreciation for your work. Keep up the good work.

95. I waited for your version, but man, the PS2 ending was way better… why did they have to do this half-assed ending in the anime. Also, Rihoko’s song in the game sounds more like her.

96. I personally thought the ending was quite cute (I finally got to watch the episode last night even though I worked on it!). It was fitting for Rihoko in my humble opinion, anything else would have felt kind of weird. I guess I must be one of the only people who enjoyed her arc! It was quite clumsy and down to earth!

Thanks a lot guys, you never dissapoint, I would have waited even two more days (then the withdrawal symptoms kick in XD) for your version if necessary =)!
The only point I was mad was when I quickly checked the website and you had that “Nobody cares about Rihoko” at the bottom of the post ò.ó!!!! But then it wasn’t there so meeeh XD!
Thanks again!

98. @ ar
It was definitely fitting for her character, though most people were expecting a true-to-style romance ending, rather than the ultra-warm and fuzzy better-than-friends-but-not-quite-lovers ending that we DID get.
I did quite like the warmth and fuzziness it left, and I agree with mensaguy8 in his observation about the subtle nature of the japanese language. Being fairly fluent in japanese (the spoken aspect at least), I can say with confidence that I have encountered the same subtlety in language that he/she has, and that it’s not normal for junichi to just say ‘entrust the tea club and rihoko to me’ without there being the deeper meaning, because even rihoko wouldn’t have been THAT emotional from him simply joining, even if it was compiled with the feelings of her sempai leaving.
Her expression gave that away, and you don’t have to be a mind-reader to have seen it. Of course, if you didn’t manage to catch that, and how they were acting in the epilogue, (as close as a married couple), it was likely because you were too busy reading the subtitles, (for which I can’t blame you, after all, you’re here because you don’t understand the original language.).

99. Thanks for the release. I just waited for UTW, didn’t wanna fuck with anything else. Last order held me over, anyhow.

100. Ya seriously man, I think the majority of us hear (from what I’ve read) feel the same way…UTW ftw

100% AGREED. AI = THE BEST.
Ai >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rihoko

106. …nice one, Kusion. Now everyone thinks I hate Rihoko.
Though, this should’ve been a Kanae arc. Girl is smokin’ hot.
@ Zero: Then you clearly aren’t very fluent at all if you claim the Japanese “subtleties” implied in that line aren’t present in the English line you yourself quoted. Japanese isn’t significantly more complicated/subtle than any other language out there (which would have been common sense to you if you’re even somewhat comfortable with the language), and it doesn’t take a genius in any language to figure out “entrust the Tea Club and Rihoko to me” potentially implies something deeper.
http://twitpic.com/2va1ot
I also certainly hope the last part of your comment was not directed at ar, because he’s one of my staff.
Anyway, it is my opinion Junichi didn’t really imply that he’d watch over Rihoko as anything more than a childhood friend. He’s always been a “nice guy” (helping Sae buy her bread etc.), not to mention that he has always gone out of his way to help Rihoko (“You’re hopeless, Rihoko”) while (intentionally?) being oblivious to her feelings for him. It’s true the whole ending scene was suggestive of a married couple (the Senpai even point that out explicitly), but cherry blossoms and clothing aside, the fact remains Rihoko is no closer to confessing to Junichi than when the arc began.

109. Not going to read through all 110 comments before mine now, but um… First off, I’d like to thank UTW once again for subbing and sharing Amagami SS for us!
As for the arc itself, I think the ending was perfectly fine the way it turned out. Not all love has to depicted by kissing / hugging / etc., and not all the arcs in this series have to end in a particular way, either. I’m glad there’s all the variations at all, as this is demonstrating what the story writers and the producers are capable of, and also shows the characters in good lights, too.
I really enjoyed the Rihoko arc (especially Shintani Ryouko’s work, haha), and I look forward to the next one!

110. @ Raze
I never said that. I was commenting solely on the presence of the subtleties, and not on the lack of them in the translation.
>I also certainly hope the last part of your comment was not directed at ar, because he’s one of my staff.
Definitely not. Nothing I said was meant in any derogatory way or directed at your staff in such a manner. Only the very first line was a reply for ar.

I’m still left disappointed. I initially believed that the Kaoru and Rihoko arcs would be my faves of the series, but after seeing their respective endings… I find myself in a dilemma. On one side, I like both girls to the point that they’re still my faves (more so than Ai), but how their routes end in this anime leaves me dangling at the edge of a cliff. I found no exact closure, dammit!
Anyway, with my small rant aside, I just thought to say that to those who wish to see a good “closure” to this arc (even if it’s not exact to the anime’s plot) then you can find it in Chapter 16.7 in the manga, Amagami Precious Diary. The drawings are average, but it makes up for its… ahem, “ecchi” atmosphere. It helped me find closure, somewhat. I hope that it’d do to same to others.
http://www.mangafox.com/manga/amagami_precious_diary/v02/c016.7/
Remember, guys, it does not completely follow the anime’s plot, so expect a few inconsistencies.

121. Didn’t mind the wait, UTW. You did a great job.
Now, as for the ending of the Rihoko arc… It’s rather disappointing, compared to the others. I had hoped their relationship would blossom in a more intimate way. I agree Rihoko wants to take her time, but that’s pretty hard with Tachibana. She (or he) should be a bit more aggressive. Oh well, guess not every day is Ai day.
Thus, my score thusfar: Rihoko < Haruka < Sae < Kaoru < Ai
Can't wait for the Tsukasa arc.

“Other sources”?? I didn’t even know there WERE other sources till I saw this post. Not like I would’ve DLed it anyway; 1 group change (Eclipse -> UTW) on a series is already enough.
As for the ending… yeah, it sucks on one level, but I can understand them not wanting to end every arc the exact same way.

According to AniDB, this series is scheduled for 26 episodes. With six girls, four episodes each, it leaves one to wonder what the final two episodes will cover. Those arcs with the most ambiguous endings could well see a “10 years after” treatment – like the closing scene in the Morishima arc. Of course it might also be something completely unrelated like the Clannad After Story arc (Tomoya/Kyou) and/or the Clannad arc (Tomoya/Tomoyo). Anyone have any ideas about the content of eps 25 & 26? Reminds me of dialog between the catcher and the ace opposition batter in the last Crossgame episode. The catcher says: “This was meant to be, from the start. Let’s make it a climactic finale.” The ace batter says: “It’s the finale for which of us.” The catcher then says: “Who knows? And that’s precisely what makes this fun.”
The anticipation for the next story is what makes watching anime so much fun!
UTW rocks!

I think what you meant there was the 2 OVA’s that will be released on the 13th volume of the BD/DVD due in april 2011, they will be the Miya Tachibana and
Risa Kamizaki (Yandere/Stalker and the cause of junichi’s infamous heartbreak two years ago. she’s the girl walking besides Nanasaki Ai in the first Opening.)
the first 12 volumes are the original TV anime episodes.

130. Unfortunately did the end turn out to be not as satisfying as I would have wished. Yet, that was somewhat predictable from the preceding episodes. Although the scenery may be highly suggestive, the arc is overall not as consistent as it could have been. Junichi’s behaviour at the end doesn’t give enough way for a definite conclusion. But it is really the producers who are to blame. They have fucked up a number of things from the beginning, although they still could have turned it after the first episode. I didn’t really like that they made Rihoko overly clumsy and I also could hardly stand these both elder tea club weirdos. Still, although I definitely had wished for more, the arc was okay. I can’t say they totally screwed it.
As for UTW’s work, I can compare it with the earlier release, which was decent but definitely not as good as yours as regards most aspects of a fansub. But it suited my need to cure the desire for Amagami at that time and therefore I was glad it came up. Your release however, filled some of the shortcomings of the earlier one (e.g., signs, to name one).
@mensaguy8: As far as I’ve read, the TV series will span 24 episodes only. The remaining two episodes will be single episode arcs for Risa Kamisaki and Miya for the BD release. I’m uncertain about an additional OVA of six episodes that has been said will be available for distribution to those who buy each of the BDs and will feature each of the heroines in an alternative (?) way. Maybe there’s chance to see some more love for Rihoko with these.
